Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. I won’t list them all here but join me in creating your own list and carving out a little time to personally connect with each one this month. Move Over Man Cave She Sheds are the New Rage Among Women ARTICLE BY JACQUIE MAZZIOTTA PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARTVILLE OUTDOOR PRODUCTS / SUPPLIED What would you do if you could create an escape — a quiet space that feels like a world away, but in reality it’s just a few steps from home? This quaint area could be solace for your private art studio, reading or writing nook or even a party shed. There is such a place, and you can have it in your own backyard. The man cave has changed, and the ladies of the house have found an alternative to the traditional sports cave known for football and brews.
Today’s version of backyard storage buildings commonly used for storing lawnmowers and garden tools have been converted into trendy “me” spaces for women — she sheds. “Today’s shed is a small, entirely private space located outside the home and designed with a warm and comfortable feel,” says Scott Rayman, who co-owns Hartville Outdoor Products with his wife CONTINUED >

Tina. “They are getaway spots or places to indulge in hobbies and relaxation with a woman in mind.” She sheds can be customized and fit with electrical wiring, carpet and flooring, insulation, sliding glass doors, linoleum and even air conditioning. These mini homes are customized based on being an extension of the home. She sheds are often equipped with skylights, French doors, porches and even landscaping. Plus, they not only offer privacy and functionality, but also add value to the home. A range of exteriors include a rustic farmhouse look or modern vibe with vinyl or wood siding, and they can be built to fit most spaces. Nearly any size storage shed can be converted into a she shed with options ranging from as small as 8-by-8 feet and up to 12-by-20 feet. According to Scott, the most common size sheds are 10-by-16 feet and 12-by-20 feet. However, you don’t need a lot of acreage. The ideal space is 200 square feet, regardless of the size of the yard. She sheds can also double as a guest room or even a home office, and as a result of the insulation and electrical wiring options, they can be designed for yearround use. Other uses include crafting, gardening, art, pottery, sewing and even a yoga studio. “Our sheds are for recreational use only. I’ve had parents buy finished sheds for their college students, as well as people who want them for musician rooms and beyond. Both men and women are buying them. They’re taking the man cave idea to the next level,” says Scott. As today’s modern family juggles work, sports and other extracurricular activities, finding time to wind down or escape

SPRING QUICHE ingredients: • 1 pie dough • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cups mixed veggies, such as raw spinach leaves, cooked broccoli and asparagus • 7 large eggs, lightly beaten • 1 1/4 cups light cream • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper • 3/4 cup grated gruyere or white cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
makes: 6 servings
prep time: 15 minutes
cook time: 60 minutes
directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 2. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate and press it into shape. Crimp the edges if desired. 3. Place a sheet of parchment paper or foil into the pie shell and fill with pie weights, uncooked rice or dried beans. Bake until the edges are very lightly golden — about 25 minutes. Remove the pie crust but keep the oven on. If edges start getting too brown, cover with a pie cover or foil. 4. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, cream, herbs, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a large bowl and lightly whisk. 5. Sprinkle half of the gruyere or cheddar and Parmigiano-Reggiano on the crust, followed by the veggies, and then the remaining cheese. Pour the egg mixture over the top and bake until set — about 35 minutes.

STRAWBERRY BRUSCHETTA makes: 6 servings
prep time: 10 minutes

ingredients: • • • • • •
1 pound strawberries, washed and sliced 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon olive oil Kosher salt 1 loaf Italian or French bread, cut into 12 slices 1 cup goat or mascarpone cheese, room temperature • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, basil or mint leaves • Balsamic glaze • Salt and ground black pepper to taste
directions: 1. Combine strawberries and sugar in a small bowl and set aside. 2. Brush bread with olive oil and a sprinkle of kosher salt. 3. Position oven rack a few inches below broil and preheat broiler. Align bread slices on a baking sheet. Broil first side until golden brown — about one minute — then flip bread slices to the opposite side and broil opposite sides until golden brown. 4. Spread cheese on toasted bread. Add a pinch of black pepper, salt and the herbs to the strawberry mixture. Spoon the strawberry mixture over the cheese-topped bruschetta. Garnish with additional herbs. Drizzle lightly with balsamic vinegar.

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/2 cup olive oil Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 teaspoons of honey Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 10 ounces spring greens, baby arugula or butter lettuce 1/3 cup pine nuts, toasted 1 cup fresh fava beans, shelled, blanched and peeled, or frozen lima beans, thawed 4-6 radishes very thinly sliced 6-8 stalks of roasted asparagus cut into 2-inch pieces 4 ounces soft goat cheese or feta
directions: Dressing - In a small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, one teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and honey. Salad 1 - Place the lettuce in a separate bowl and toss it with enough vinaigrette to moisten. 2. Put the lettuce on a serving platter or bowl and arrange the rest of the ingredients on top.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Kara Smith, co-owner of Studio Bakery located at 4339 Dressler Rd. NW in the Belden Center. Here's a glimpse inside her story and that of Studio Bakery.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT STUDIO BAKERY. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I met my business partner, Brittany Bergquist, over 10 years ago at West Point Market. We had talked about opening a bakery together, with her baking and myself decorating. We knew that we wanted to make everything from scratch and have an open concept, where you could see what we were working on. It took us about a year to plan, find a space and open Studio Bakery. This coming September we’ll celebrate its fourth anniversary.
WHAT KIND OF DELICACIES CAN ONE FIND THERE? Everything from specialty pastries to the humble chocolate chip cookie! We take special pride in our beautiful, artistic, custom cakes. We also carry one of the largest selections of French macarons in the area. We’d like to start featuring weekend specials, possibly bringing back our famous cinnamon rolls. We’re also looking at shipping our desserts and offering classes in the future.
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE ENTAIL? I definitely have to be flexible as an owner. I never know what the day will bring! I’m the head cake decorator as well, so much of my day consists of prepping and decorating the amazing cakes that Brittany bakes. I also love making royal icing cut-out cookies. They’re time-consuming and detailed, a fun change of pace.
HOW DID YOU GET TO BE HERE? Hard work, vision, dedication and the support of family and friends has led me to where I am today. My training came from work experience, and I was fortunate to have patient, supportive and encouraging teachers. My passion for decorating stems from the creativity involved. Each custom cake is different and requires a different set of skills. I love seeing the expressions of customers who are absolutely happy with their unique cake.
WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR STUDIO BAKERY? Wedding season is here, so we encourage couples to stop in and ask about wedding cakes or desserts. Looking for a great family activity this month? On May 21, GiGi’s Playhouse Canton is hosting its first 5k, 1 Mile Walk and Kids Dash for Down syndrome. The event is a key fundraiser to benefit the free therapeutic and educational programs at GiGi’s Playhouse Canton. Opened in April 2019, GiGi’s Playhouse Canton has been changing local lives by providing free therapeutic, educational and career training programs for individuals of all ages. “All of our programs are 100% free to families because we never want cost to be a barrier,” says Site Manager Megan Vance. Get up and MOVE for ACCEPTANCE on Saturday, May 21 at Canal Park (the Rubber Ducks stadium) in Akron.
