Brick is more than beautiful. Brick is sustainable, energy-efficient and durable. For more than a century The Belden Brick Company has been turning raw materials into roads, living spaces, community centers and more. What began with one man’s quest to convert clay and shale into brick changed the course of local transport and has become an integral part of life across the United States and beyond. In 1885, the population of Canton was about 20,000 people. A young William McKinley was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and local travel was accomplished by way of dirt roads. A local politician and the city’s former mayor, Henry Belden, began firing clay and shale, ultimately creating the paving brick that served as the city’s first road between Tuscarawas and 2nd Streets Southeast. Soon after, the pavers could be seen across the state of Ohio. “He had his hands involved in a lot of things and was always thinking of the future and products needed to enhance lifestyle. He was always trying to find a way to improve surroundings and provide a product people wanted,” says Brian Belden, vice president of sales & marketing of the Belden Brick Company and greatgreat-grandson of the company’s founder. The culture of innovation and attention to customer needs continued, allowing the ensuing generations to grow the business into a global company. In total, Belden Brick has five manufacturing plants and a saw-cutting plant in Sugarcreek and owns three distributorships in the United States and Canada. Belden Tri-State Building Materials has three offices located in New York, Philadelphia and Saddlebrook,

New Jersey. Belden Brick Sales Company is in Fraser, Michigan, and Premier Brick Sales of Indiana, a joint venture, is in Westfield, Indiana. “Every 10-15 years we are making a plant renovation or building a new plant,” says Belden. “Our plant number eight, which was originally built in 1968, is undergoing a capital investment project now which includes automation and robotics as a significant part of the plan. Technology changes the way we handle the brick and move it around the plant.” Adapting to changing consumer preferences requires significant research and development. Colors are important. Raw materials found in this region dictate the base color of the brick, and combining additives creates more options. “Today’s demand is more in favor of whites, grays and even black brick as opposed to traditional red brick. What we call fire clay is a creamy white material that would ultimately make a cream or gray color brick, while shale burns more of a red,” Belden explains. “The beauty of brick in my mind is that it’s maintenance free and you don’t have to maintain it,” he adds. Thin brick, glazed brick and clay pavers are becoming increasingly popular. Thin brick is commonly used for the interior of homes for projects like backsplashes in kitchens or behind bars, laundry rooms and bathrooms as well as for accent walls, etc. Thin brick can also be used on the exterior; it is commonly used in California for large-scale projects. Clay pavers enhance residential walkways and driveways and add resale value to homes. However, they are often found in commercial projects like Centennial Plaza as well.

Precast concrete panels, which are filled with concrete and surrounded with thin brick, are commonly used in commercial projects like Busch Stadium in St. Louis, which has three different types of brick: full, thin brick panels and half brick. Regardless of the type of brick used, Belden says, “We always go back to quality and knowing that once we know our product goes into the package it will get to the jobsite. When it gets to the wall and the finished building, the customer knows it’s going to last. We’re always looking at quality control throughout our process. We can try to see where issues may happen. If something is happening that isn’t right, we call that process or pull that brick out.” As the company continues to serve the private and commercial brick needs of individuals and businesses, the Beldens remain steadfast in their commitment to Canton and the surrounding area. In the early 1900s, Paul Belden was instrumental in the founding of the United Way of Greater Stark County. Today the family’s legacy of community involvement continues. “This is where we live. This is where we work, and we want the best for everyone. We really are rooted in the community. It’s been a focus of our family that’s been passed down from generation to generation. We’ve been in business here for 137 years. We want to make things better and do what we can to provide a product that enhances the community and environment,” says Belden. How Habitat for Humanity Helps Families Build a Foundation of Strength, Stability and Self-Reliance

Families need affordable housing more than ever, so Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is building more than ever. Today in the U.S., one in four people live in conditions that harm their health, safety, prosperity or opportunities while housing costs are rising faster than wages in 90% of housing markets. On the other hand, a decent, affordable home helps people throughout our community break the cycle of generational poverty and instead helps them build a cycle of strength and stability that lasts for generations. This is why Habitat for Humanity works to make a difference in our local community by building and preserving homes with a purposeful focus on holistic neighborhood revitalization.

HOW HABITAT BUILDS A grassroots Christian housing ministry, Habitat partners with low- to moderate-income families who need a hand-up, not a handout. Future homeowners invest “sweat equity” by completing courses on financial literacy, home maintenance and personal development, and they build their home and the homes of other families. Churches, businesses, organizations and individuals contribute the financial resources that help Habitat purchase building materials, and volunteers build side-by-side with future homeowners. When homes are complete, they’re sold to families with long-term 0% interest mortgages. And as Habitat families make payments on their interest-free mortgages, they help fund even more Habitat projects.

WHY HABITAT BUILDS The families who partner with Habitat for Humanity know that the journey toward homeownership is not an easy one, but one that is well worth the investment. When families partner with Habitat to build and purchase their homes,

they commit to a process that takes time and ultimately builds a strong foundation for the future. Tips for Talking with Your Teenager

March 2nd is World Teen Mental Wellness Day, a day to raise awareness about teen mental health and to promote conversations about removing stigmas surrounding preventative mental health. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that one in seven teenagers world-wide experience mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and behavioral issues. Many of these issues go unrecognized and untreated. Counselors are a great community resource to prevent the development of mental health issues in your teen and be a trusted source of support when struggles do arise with self-esteem, school and relationships with peers and family. Mental health issues are no less important than physical health, and they are treatable. A teen’s mental health is shaped by many factors, including relationships with family. Building a strong relationship with your teenager through healthy communication contributes to their mental health and wellness — and yours too. Here are three tips from counselors who work with teens and families:

CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR EMOTIONS It’s not easy for teens to open up — especially when they are dealing with hard things. Creating an open-door policy with your teen is a great way to help them navigate stressors and celebrate successes. It is important that your teen knows you are there to listen without judgement, and that you will take in what they have to say without offering immediate solutions. Teens are looking for more independence — try to be more of a collaborator, rather than a supervisor. Suggestions for creating a safe space include: having a parent-teen journal, creating a sign that symbolizes readiness to talk and having regular check-ins during meals.

PRACTICE "I” STATEMENTS Sometimes having a “formula” makes something easier. Teaching and modeling the use of “I” statements with your teen can help them express their thoughts and feelings, as well as their needs. Here’s how it goes: I feel [insert feeling word] because [insert explanation without directly blaming someone else]. I’m wondering if [insert potential solution to discuss]. And, here is an example: I feel overwhelmed because when we talk about my grades I feel pressure to be perfect. I’m wondering if we can be less critical of my mistakes.

MAKE TALKING FUN! Create engaging activities that promote meaningful conversations. For example, fill a jar with different colored gummy bears. Work collaboratively with your teen to write down one question that corresponds with each color (for example, red gummy bear = “What was the best part of your day?”). Each day schedule time as a family to draw three to four gummy bears (per person) from the jar, respond to the questions and have fun!

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in

New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach

is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.
