I hope you will love this "Local Love" issue of Canton Lifestyle Magazine. Putting it together with my team was a huge reminder of so many great things about Canton. It also took me back to the decision I made, just three months out of college, to plant my roots here in my hometown. At that time, I was working in downtown Cleveland at a great job at one of the largest consulting firms in the country. It was the type of job that would expose me to dozens of Fortune 500 companies across the USA, one of which was likely to one day offer me a permanent position with them. Had I stayed, I could have ended up anywhere. As fate would have it, one of my best friends headed a software division within a local copier company in town. When I told the consulting firm that I disliked the big city and was leaving for a job opportunity back home, they were baffled. They wanted me to stay but my heart was set on returning closer to friends and family. I distinctively remember the jaded Human Resources Director making an office-wide announcement on my last day saying, “Brian Bailey is leaving the firm to fulfill his lifelong dream of living and working in Canton.” Ugh. There was obviously more to it than that, but I have no regrets on the decision. We all know that Canton is a great place to live and work and, of course, raise a family. Remind yourself of that by reading our "Name Your Fave" article highlighting seven wonderfully unique local eating and drinking spots. We also caught up with Canton’s former long-time connection to national touring musical acts and the local music scene, as well as respected critic of local restaurants, Dan Kane. For those that miss Dan’s opinions and commentary, take note of the local podcast he recently joined. Thanks to all the readers that support the local businesses in town! “Craft beer for all people is a sentiment that runs through the company to its heart.” How did a craft brewery from North Canton, Ohio end up named after a field of sedimentary rock underlying much of Appalachia? About 15 years ago, a group of fellows with a passion for homebrewing decided to get together and start up a real brewery. After running into conflicts with the originally chosen name, a friend of Owner Jeff Joliat suggested “Shale” as a nod to the booming natural gas and oil industry targeting the Utica Shale in the area. The name took hold, and years later Shale Brewing Company offers an extensive lineup of exquisite craft brews, many of which are themed after that self-same industry. They’ve been brewing brown gold at the spacious Whipple Ave location in Jackson Township since 2018, where they lovingly and meticulously produce small batches of unique craft beers. But they aren’t pretentious about it in the slightest. In fact, their slogan is “craft beer for all people,” and that sentiment runs through the company to its heart. Making craft beers accessible and making everyone feel welcome are core to Shale philosophy. “Our staff is inviting and treats all people as equals,” says General Manager Nick Maurer. “We really want to make it fun for everybody, and not be just another bar scene.” Shale Brewing Company has put a focus on brewing eminently drinkable and desirable craft beers for every palate. Not only can a customer find anything from a stout to a seltzer, but the brews are delicious enough and approachable enough that patrons could enjoy styles outside their normal comfort zone. Brewing in small batches of just a few half-barrels at a time provides a lot of flexibility to experiment with new and unique flavor profiles, which is how Shale Brewing Company created its most popular brew. That’s why it ended up as a permanent resident on the Shale Brewing Company taps, found alongside other time-tested originals such as the Golden Lager, Cold Rolled Ale, Deep Driller Porter and Roughneck Red. “We serve every glass of Shale Blackberry Ale with a fresh blackberry to really enhance that flavor. It’s by far our best seller,” says Nick. “Personally, I’m also partial to the Deep Driller Porter. It’s got a great flavor profile, robust and a little on the darker side. They’re both classics.” The luscious libations aren’t the only reason to stop in, however. The edible fare is as scrumptious as it is thoughtfully devised, and prepared with largely locally grown produce. The Whipple Ave location holds Stump! Trivia nights every Tuesday, a classically entertaining evening out for friends or family. They co-host twice monthly bike rides with Ernie’s Bike Shop through the summer, with escalating prizes for returning participants. There are also quarterly ticketed dinners featuring four off-menu specialty courses and four brews to compliment. To top it all off, Shale Brewing Company is a caring community member and a partner in the North Canton Cares Food Pantry, providing their own resources to assist this local organization feeding hungry families. After winning the Canton Repository’s Best of the Best in two categories for the past three years (Canton’s Best Jewelry Store and Canton’s Best Jewelry Service & Repair), it’s clear that locals love Anne-Marie’s Fine Jewelry. But it’s possible owner Anne-Marie Beris’ daughters love the business even more. Alyssa and Lauren Beris grew up in the business and worked during the holiday rush as teenagers. But after they each went away to school – Alyssa to Ohio University and Lauren Beris to New Approach School for Bench Jewelers in Tennessee – they returned to Stark County and now work full time at the store. Yet, they aren’t the only mother-daughter pair on hand. Anne-Marie’s mother, Elaine Maguire, has worked as the store’s office manager since it opened in 1998. “Each one of us has a different talent that makes us the perfect team,” says Alyssa. “We balance each other and are very passionate about jewelry and this store.” While not everyone behind the counter is related, it sure feels that way. “All our employees are family to us even though they aren’t blood,” says Anne-Marie. Kathleen is like my second Mom, and I’ve known Clara since we worked in another jewelry shop 30 years ago. Hattie and Chris have each been with us for many years, too. They are all family!” Like the employees, most of AMFJ’s customers have been with them for years (some think that Elaine is actually Anne-Marie’s sister, and the joke is that they get charged double). In a way, the staff and customers alike have all seen Alyssa and Lauren grow up. “Once Mom moved into this location, we’d come to the store almost every day after school at St. Joan of Arc and Central Catholic across the street,” says Alyssa. “We always loved trying on jewelry, ‘designing’ jewelry when we were younger, and playing with the inventory,” added Lauren. Now, they’re grown … and growing the business. Lauren was trained by some of the industry’s best and handles repairs, sets diamonds and gemstones, and designs custom pieces for the full-service jewelry store. Alyssa creates marketing content and handles social media, but also loves waiting on customers.

Whether they’re working on something that’s jewelry related or brand/marketing related, the tight-knit team of women bounce ideas off each other. They say collaboration is easy but admit it can be challenging at times. “We are very close, so there are times when we’re on the same page and other times we clash,” says Lauren. “Every artist has a different vision and approach, but we always bring the customer’s vision to life and love the process.” The family-owned business has served many generational customers since it opened in 1998. Some who’ve shopped at AMFJ over the years have even returned with their grandchildren who were purchasing engagement rings and other jewelry of their own. The team even mounted an engagement diamond for Elaine to honor her mother. “It’s crazy how everything comes full circle,” says Lauren.

Speaking of Elaine’s mother and full circle moments, she sold jewelry at O’Neil’s in Massillon. When Anne-Marie was little, the now jewelry-store owner would watch her Sitto (“grandmother” in Lebanese) sell, and she still has every piece of jewelry Sitto ever purchased for her. “I wear her gold bangle bracelets every single day,” says Anne-Marie. “We decorate a Christmas tree at the store with all of her costume jewelry for the holidays!” It’s a fitting tribute to the woman who babysat the kids when both Anne-Marie and Elaine were at the store working. But Sitto didn’t stop there. She helped Alyssa, Lauren and their Mother start personal charm bracelets – something all three women emphasize as one of their favorite pieces – and the matriarchs have been saving charms for the youngest two for years. Whether it's personal charm bracelets, engraved Lebanese family crest pendants, diamond engagement settings, or

something else, AMFJ takes pride in their sales and custom work because they know it’s a privilege to create cherished jewelry. “We could not be more humbled and blessed to do this work,” Lauren says. “We create something new every single day and we love it.” That love is strong as Anne-Marie doesn’t plan on retiring soon; in fact, the family laughs about her potentially working at the store until she’s 90. “Without a doubt, we plan to keep this business in the family,” said AnneMarie. “We joke that Lauren’s kids will be strapped to her back while she’s sitting at the bench. It would be pretty incredible if the future generations would be interested in carrying on the legacy.” Either way, as the future for AMFJ ownership, the road ahead looks bright for these diamond daughters. And there’s no doubt their gifts are propelling the family business forward.

“I think retiring early is the dream.” - Dan Kane Canton foodies and arts enthusiasts know Dan Kane for his food critiques and entertainment reviews. Musicians and artists know him as a champion of the arts. Since the longtime Canton Repository food and entertainment editor retired last spring, he’s not only living the American dream, but has since traded his laptop for a microphone and added podcaster and curator to his curriculum vitae. “I’m taking things as they come. Initially, I thought I’d want to get a part-time writing job, but I stopped working (at the Repository) and decided, I don’t feel like working now. It’s been a good change. I can do what I want and haven’t been bored yet,” he says. The onset of the pandemic was a game-changer for the former editor. Once entertainment venues closed, and restaurants offered carry-out only, Dan’s typical role in the office was challenged dramatically. “The last year I spent writing, I was sitting in front of a laptop at my house and no longer in the newsroom at work with my friends and coworkers. I was pretty much alone,” he says. “If COVID had never happened, I’m not sure I would have thought to retire early.” As with many people during lockdowns and quarantine, Dan shifted his focus to the outdoors. He traveled to Colorado and North Carolina and explored Northern Michigan, hiking, kayaking and cycling. Weather permitting, when he isn’t riding his bike on the Towpath, Dan might be found on the What’s Up Stark? podcast. Every two weeks, he joins co-hosts, Derek Gordon and Brock Hutcheson, to discuss light topics with notable names from Stark County government, businesses, arts, entertainment and the world of food, of course. Every segment features Dan talking about, “…things that have caught my fancy lately ... a newMexican restaurant or an upcoming art show,” he says.

He remains active in the community. Last fall he organized the David Bowie-themed art exhibition “Turn and Face the Strange” at local art gallery, The Hub Art Factory. An artist himself, his work was featured along with several other local artists. He has already begun planning a follow-up art show scheduled for fall 2022. He also enjoys the small, intimate setting of live theatre at Avenue Arts downtown where audience members can engage with actors on stage. His passion for rock and roll endures. With a repertoire that includes interviews with tops acts including Ray Charles, James Brown, Tina Turner and Macy Gray, he has an eye for the next big thing. Topping his picks for entertainment is Youngstown-based band, the Vindys. According to Dan, the lead vocalist has a voice that can sound like Janis Joplin or Amy Winehouse at any given time. This year he plans to organize a Neil Young tribute concert. If it’s anything like the Rolling Stones tribute show he organized, expect another sellout crowd. He’s often approached and greeted with messages of encouragement from people who say they miss his stories. When they ask what he does all day, he says, “whatever I want.” From one writer to another, it would be remiss not to ask this 38-year veteran of the news industry his opinion of the ever-changing news world through the eyes of the reader once again. In sincere Dan style, he offers this thought. “It concerns me that local newspapers seem to be shrinking all over the place. I wonder who’s going to write about city government and things that are important. When we were at full operating capacity, we all worked very hard to make a difference in the community. As employees, we didn’t have bias. We were trying to be fair.”

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history.
