LIFESTYLE LETTER
Here's to a Year of Wellness Happy New Year, Canton; and allow me to introduce myself. My name is Emily Shea and I am the new editor of Canton Lifestyle. I am ecstatic to be working with the wonderful Canton Lifestyle team, but admittedly even more thrilled to get to know the Canton community. For our first issue of 2022, we are focusing on health and wellness — from eating right to nail health. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the core of this issue. To bring you some stellar content that meets this goal, Canton Lifestyle has partnered with some fantastic leaders and businesses in our community — like Joan Uhl, a Registered Dietician Nutritionist at Stark Women’s Center and Jessica Danielle Haavisto, owner of Jessica Danielle The Nail Bar. Our publisher and local restauranteur, Brian Bailey, has also supplied a few healthy and astonishingly delicious recipes that incorporate chimichurri, his new favorite condiment made with fresh and flavorful ingredients. Whether your New Year's resolution is to be more active or simply bring more focus and intention to your mental and emotional health, I hope you find some inspiration in these pages to support your goals. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

BODY AND MIND AS A RESULT OF DELIBERATE EFFORT
The human body is an intricate and interconnected system. Though she specializes in Dietetics, Joan Uhl knows that each person needs to be considered individually and comprehensively to achieve true wellness. Joan is a Registered Dietician Nutritionist, or RDN, at Stark Women’s Center with over 30 years of experience. In the last two and a half years at SWC she has eased digestive issues, guided pregnant patients through gestational diabetes and helped countless individuals alter their lifestyles to promote health and weight loss. Now, she’s here to usher us into a new year of wellness with some sage advice.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT STARK WOMEN’S CENTER AND YOUR ROLE THERE. I think SWC is really a premier facility. Patients can see physicians here, as well as nurse practitioners and other clinical staff. We have a mammography unit and a bone density machine here; there’s really enough coverage that it’s sort of a one-stop shop. I see many patients about their dietary needs, from issues during pregnancy to normal weight loss. I don’t like to draw attention to myself, but serving our patients and employees has really been a blessing. Hopefully, they see me trying to walk the talk, living out the things I encourage.
WHAT DRIVES YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR DIETETICS? Well, let’s look at an example. Many of my gestational diabetes patients experience this fear because they’re already dealing with the stressors of pregnancy and then they find out that they suddenly have diabetes because of it. For most of these patients, lifestyle changes like eating and exercise habits are all the treatments they need. Seeing the look of relief on a patient’s face when they realize it isn’t going to be some terrible thing… I really enjoy being able to help people make big life impacts through these simple changes, to show them some understanding and kindness. It’s really difficult to manage our health!

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GREATEST DIETARY CHALLENGES YOU SEE PEOPLE FACING? Dealing with being overweight is the single biggest challenge I see in our society. We know there are more factors at play than just diet and exercise. Poor quality sleep means less time to rest and release appetite-regulating hormones. Increased stress releases cortisol, which in turn retains belly fat and triggers cravings. We have to evaluate these factors and more on an individual basis. On top of that, today’s market is oversaturated with ultra-processed foods and beverages. I encourage my patients to ask themselves, “Am I hungry?” before opening a processed snack. People eat for many reasons besides hunger, and pulling a different activity out of your toolbox can help you avoid self-sabotage.
HOW DOES ONE AVOID FALSE CLAIMS ABOUT HEALTHY EATING? You can find anything on the internet. If you want reliable, scientific information you should always look for an RDN. This is someone with five to six years of education, and you can find one on the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website. For example, just browsing the internet can leave you with the impression that you should avoid all carbohydrates. My take as an RDN? Carbs are not bad! Whole grain carbohydrates are fantastic. Fruits and vegetables are essentially all carbohydrates, and we as Americans need much more of them. It all comes down to the source. Ultra-processed sweets and snacks are where the issue lies. So load up on non-starchy veggies. Try whole wheat bread, or whole wheat white if you don’t like that whole wheat flavor.
WHAT’S IN YOUR CART?
— A look inside a local nutritionist’s shopping cart with Joan Uhl from Stark Women’s Center.
APPLES
The carbohydrates in these and other fruits are very healthy. Aim for two to three servings a day.
BROCCOLI
Getting enough vegetables in our diets is critical. Roast them to totally transform the flavor!
IBROWN RICE
At least 50% of our carbs should be from whole grains. Choose brown rice over white to boost that number.
DRIED BEANS
What an excellent source of protein and fiber! Swap them out for ground meat to “beef up” a dish.
YOGURT
Some dairy is a part of a balanced diet, and the probiotics in yogurt help regulate your digestive system.
TURKEY
Lean meats help reduce the risk of chronic diseases as well as cut down your overall calorie count.
DARK CHOCOLATE INFUSED WATER
Everybody has their indulgences, and this is mine. Enjoy in moderation, and don’t feel guilty about it! A slice of your favorite fruit in a glass of water will hydrate you and help satisfy sugar cravings.
WHAT DOES AN IDEAL DIET LOOK LIKE? There is no “perfect diet.” Unless there is a medical reason preventing it, all foods can fit into a healthy diet. But we as Americans need to adopt healthier lifestyles in general. One of my first initiatives at SWC was passing out handouts asking for one healthy lifestyle change per month for a year. Maybe one month you commit to upping your vegetable intake by a serving each day. The next month you limit sodium, the next add more fruit and so on. It’s ok if your endgame is losing 50 pounds, but I say let’s take it a pound at a time. At the end of twelve months, you have twelve meaningful, positive changes to your lifestyle.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PARTING WORDS FOR OUR READERS? I’d say that it’s very important to practice mindfulness, as well as gratitude. Finding something to be grateful for every day is just such a positive influence and a great way to promote wellness. For more information visit StarkWomensCenter.com.

First impressions are lasting when meeting a new client, a potential employer or a first date. It begins with the handshake and a glance over with a quick look at groomed hands and a polished manicure. It’s only natural that determining whether you’ve made a good impression can be a nail-biter – no pun intended. Neatly manicured hands are an important element of a person’s personal brand and overall image. The nail bar and salon business is a multi-billion dollar industry in the United States. On any given day, both women and men can be found visiting their favorite technician for nail and cuticle trims, buffs, pedicures and more. Choosing a qualified and knowledgeable professional is vital for health and aesthetics. According to Jessica Danielle Haavisto, entrepreneur and owner of Jessica Danielle The Nail Bar, focusing on safety is a paramount concern she has for both clients and nail technicians. “It’s important to do it right, from start to finish,” Jessica Danielle explains. “We’re focused on quality. We use the safest products and applications, including liquids and techniques. I do a lot of research and mentor our technicians, making sure they are informed and practicing safe procedures and using safe products, because some salons don’t always use products that are legal, especially with acrylics.”
For example, Methyl methacrylate is a bonding agent that was commonly used with acrylic nail application until the general public learned of its harmful effects several years ago. Today its use is prohibited in salons, however, some salons continue to use the compound due to a lower cost compared to other products. Jessica Danielle has been in the nail business for 14 years. She began styling hair and decided to focus on nails. Ultimately, she opened Jessica Danielle The Nail Bar, located at 3984 Fulton Drive NW in Canton, in 2018 and has plans to add an additional location in the future. “I always wanted to own my own salon. Entrepreneurship runs in my family. At my nail bar, we focus on quality and trying to bring nails to life. We offer exclusive nail art, and we use the safest products available,” she explains. The Nail Bar features six specialized technicians who focus on a variety of client issues, ranging from nail biting and damage to fungus resulting from nail moisture. Other services include custom nail designs, gel manicures, spa pedicures, permanent makeup and more. When asked for an inside scoop for upcoming trends in nail art, Jessica Danielle says animal prints are among the top picks for the upcoming year. CONTINUED >

JESSICA DANIEL’S TIPS FOR HEALTHY NAILS
01 // When removing acrylics, always soak them off. Ripping them can damage the nail plate. 02 // Use cuticle oil every day. Cuticle oil helps maintain healthy nails and cuticles and can also help protect from trauma and damage.
04 //
03 // It is acceptable for a technician to use an e-file. When used properly, it should not damage nails. 04 // During the application of acrylic nails, confirm the technician is using Ethyl Methacrylate (EMA) and not the cheaper Methyl Methacrylate (MMA). The EMA product will allow the acrylic to flake off after soaking. A good indicator MMA is being used is that MMA will cause nails to be slimy when being removed. If unsure, ask the technician to see the labels on products.
ADDITIONAL TIPS: • Never let a technician use any supplies that were used previously. Always use a new file, sanding band, buffer, etc. • Instruments should always be sanitized between clients. • Do not bite your nails.

The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 30
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FITNE S S
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
