FUN FOR ALL.
ALL FOR FUN.
LOCAL AMUSEMENT PARK CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF GOOD TIMES FOR ALL AGES
“EVERYTHING HERE IS DESIGNED TO GET PEOPLE TOGETHER.” That’s how Tim McCully describes Sluggers & Putters, the amusement park/family fun center he owns and operates in Canal Fulton, Ohio. What started modestly with three activities (including the batting cages and miniature golf that gave the park its name) has swelled to 25 rides and attractions. There’s plenty of room to grow on the sprawling 70-acre property that’s festooned with trees amid the brightly colored rides, games and other attractions. In fact, McCully boasts that Sluggers & Putters is the third-largest amusement park in Ohio, behind industry behemoths Cedar Point in Sandusky and Kings Island near Cincinnati. Highlights include two miniature golf courses, two go-kart tracks (one for smaller kids and one for bigger kids and adults), the Little Dipper roller coaster, flying swings, the carnival classic Scrambler, bumper cars, and even water bumper boats with water cannons that boat captains can aim at each other. McCully and his wife, Rhonda, purchased the property in 1990. “It was a cornfield…a true field of dreams,” says McCully. They opened the park the following year, making this summer Sluggers & Putters’ 30th anniversary. McCully’s background was in landscaping and horticulture, but he’d dabbled in other businesses. He always had a foot in entertainment too, dating back to his high school years as a young concert promoter and his later ownership of a roller skating rink. The idea for the park sprang from a vision McCully had for a local place where families could gather and experience outdoor recreation.

FIVE INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS SHARE THEIR INSIGHTS ON CURRENT MARKET TRENDS
CUTLER REAL ESTATE 330.495.7430 MBAILEY@CUTLERHOMES.COM HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CURRENT REAL ESTATE MARKET IN OUR COMMUNITY? We are currently in a seller’s market. Properties are moving very quickly, often above asking price and frequently with multiple offers. It’s incredibly fast-paced but patient buyers can still find their dream home. WHAT SHOULD EVERY BUYER KNOW RIGHT NOW? Because buyers must act quickly, they should research a property prior to their scheduled showing. I recommend driving around the neighborhood, studying the listing photos and talking to their real estate agent about local comps. Often an offer will need to be submitted after the initial visit. There’s little time to “think about it!” SHOULD I GET PRE-APPROVED BEFORE HOUSE HUNTING OR CONTACTING AN AGENT? Yes. This market is extremely competitive, and the buyer needs to know what they can realistically offer on a property. You should allow for room to negotiate within your budget. WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT AS A LOCAL REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONAL AND AGENT? Working as a team with my partner, Nancy Platek, gives each client extra attention. We collaborate to make sure all the details are covered and “divide and conquer” when necessary to keep the transaction moving. We understand our clients are busy and have extra flexibility with our schedules.

N A N C Y P L AT E K CUTLER REAL ESTATE 330.323.6023 NPLATEK@CUTLERHOMES.COM HOW CAN BUYERS BENEFIT FROM CONDOMINIUM LIVING? It’s primarily a lifestyle change. People in all stages of life can benefit from home ownership, less responsibility for maintenance and a streamlined daily life. Condo living can free up leisure time and offer the ability to “lock and go.” The community provides a neighborly feeling while maintaining individual privacy, with great opportunities to socialize like walking paths, pools or gyms. WHAT SHOULD BUYERS CONSIDER BEFORE “RIGHTSIZING?” A few questions: How much of your current home do you still use and enjoy? Does a move improve your financial future? Will it help meet your lifestyle goals? For many people rightsizing is a freeing experience. SHOULD CONDO BUYERS ASK ANY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS? Because condominiums are geared to simplify life, most will require some kind of association fee. It’s good to question the cost of the fees, what they cover, how often they are paid and what the rules and regulations encompass. WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT AS AN AGENT? As a 30-year resident and volunteer in Stark County, I’m familiar with all facets of our community and the needs of its people. I’m an effective communicator who believes in prompt response, attention to detail and empowering the client to make decisions while I handle the process. CONTINUED >

RUTHANNE WILKOF DEHOFF REALTORS 330.324.0573 RWILKOF@DEHOFF.COM HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE CURRENT REAL ESTATE MARKET IN OUR COMMUNITY? Interest rates are at an all-time low, and inventory just isn’t there. Many homes receive multiple offers over listing, and there’s no time or room for negotiation. It’s pretty wild. WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO SELL A HOME? Spring, summer and fall are the best time to sell, period. You get to show off the outside of the home, how well it’s been kept up. When people drive through developments and see kids outside playing they know it’s a safe, friendly neighborhood. WHAT SHOULD EVERY SELLER KNOW RIGHT NOW? If you’re going to sell, make sure you keep your home in a presentable state. A showing can come at any time, so it’s unpredictable. Make sure you have an understanding of the market. Listen to your realtor when setting a price, it’s their job to know. It can be frustrating, so be patient with all parties in a transaction. We won’t give up until all is over and done with, so stick with us. WHAT SETS YOU APART AS AN AGENT? Whatever I may be juggling, I make every client feel like they’re my only one. I work just as hard for the 50k homes as I do for the 500k.

MARK MEMMER MEMMER HOMES, INC. 330.497.1183 MARK@MEMMERHOMES.COM WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NEW CONSTRUCTION? Remodeling an existing home is tough. You’re living in a construction zone for the duration and financing a renovation can be challenging. With a new construction you get exactly what you want, everything is new and under warranty. There’s a lot less worry. WHAT’S TRENDING RIGHT NOW? Home studies are regaining popularity. If you’re working remotely, you need a designated space for it. Similarly, second floor lofts and covered porches are really hot. It’s nice to have an escape so everyone’s not on top of each other. WHAT SHOULD EVERY NEW CONSTRUCTION BUYER KNOW? It’s easiest to start a new construction in poor weather and finish details like lawns and painting in warmer months. Also, high material costs will drop eventually, but between inflation, construction costs and interest rates rising, I don’t see things getting any less expensive as we move on. So analyze your own situation, make a checklist of what you want in your new home, and base your decisions on that. WHAT DISTINGUISHES YOU AS A HOME BUILDER? What really sets us apart is our focus on the customer. We’re building a dream home, so we give them exactly what they want as painlessly as possible. That’s why we have so many repeat customers.

CULINARY CREATIONS
B a rbecue R ei ma g i ned ARTICLE BRIAN BAILEY PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY FRAVEL
ON ANY SUMMER WEEKEND, OLD CAROLINA BARBECUE COMPANY FANS WILL COLLECTIVELY PICK UP THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF HICKORY SMOKED MEATS AND SIDE DISHES TO SHARE WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS AT GRADUATION PARTIES, BIRTHDAYS, REUNIONS AND EVEN WEDDING RECEPTIONS. Barbecue travels well, holds well and always satisfies the guests. Inevitably, leftovers will end up in refrigerators only to be later reheated and served in the same sandwich and sides formation from the original event. But leftovers don’t have to be a repeat! Pulled pork, baked beans and mac ‘n cheese can be reimagined as base ingredients for other creative grilling recipes. For example, baked beans and coleslaw on top of a grilled hot dog becomes a Tar Heel Dog, an early menu favorite not currently served at the Old Carolina restaurant. Pulled pork, diced red onion and Ranchero sauce (see BBQ Quesadilla recipe) make for a gourmet hot dog topping, too. Tacos, burgers, grilled pizzas and grilled cheese sandwiches are also perfect canvases for your culinary imagination. The recipes included here should get those juices flowing and maybe even your mouth watering! Brian Bailey is co-founder of Old Carolina Barbecue Company, a 10-unit restaurant & catering operation based in Northeast Ohio. Old Carolina has won more than 150 awards for barbecue. Brian enjoys teaching Q School, where he shares professional barbecue secrets for the home grill. Learn more at OldCarolina.com.

Cheesy Pete Hot Dog + All-beef natural casing hot dogs + Split-top buns + Mac ‘n cheese + Texas Pete Hot Sauce + Bread crumbs (optional) The best hot dogs have that great “snap” when you bite into them. You’ll only find that in hot dogs with natural casings. I love all-beef dogs smothered with creamy Mac ‘n cheese and Texas Pete Hot Sauce. You can get a little extra texture with a topping of bread crumbs.

BBQ Quesadillas + Flour Tortillas + Pulled Pork + Shredded Cheddar Cheese + Diced Red Onion + Chopped Cilantro FOR THE RANCHERO BBQ SAUCE + ¼ Cup OC Classic Sweet BBQ + ¼ Cup Ranch Dressing + ¼ tsp Cayenne Pepper (or to taste) + Mix all three ingredients This is one of my favorite ways to utilize leftover smoked meats, even on the third or fourth day after a party. The melted cheese is a gooey hero, compensating for any drying out that occurred in the meat. My family even gets involved in the cooking, building and stuffing their own quesadillas, adding or subtracting ingredients to match their individual tastes. The recipe here is for pulled pork quesadillas, but you could also use chicken or chopped beef brisket. For the brisket, Colby-Jack cheese, corn salsa and a spicy crema is amazing! Simply spread shredded cheese over half the tortilla. Top with pulled pork, red onion and cilantro. Drizzle with the easy to make ranchero BBQ sauce. Fold tortilla. I love cooking the quesadillas on the grill, over a medium-low direct heat. Don’t turn up that flame or you’ll burn the tortilla before the cheese melts. Flip when the tortilla toasts and the cheese starts to melt. You can also prepare the tortillas in a frying pan on the stove with a little melted butter.

Pulled Pork Bruschetta + Pulled Pork + Plain Cream Cheese + OC Classic Sweet BBQ Sauce + Chopped Cilantro + French Baguette (cut into slices) + Olive oil, salt and pepper This appetizer recipe is super simple, yet looks fancy. Slice the baguette on the bias about ¼” thick. Brush with olive oil and season with Italian seasoning or just a little salt and pepper. Grill until toasted and allow to cool. Spread cream cheese on the baguette slices. I like to use whipped cream cheese. Top with a pinch of pulled pork. Warm pork is easier to work with, but the apps can be served cold or at room temperature. Drizzle with barbecue sauce and sprinkle with cilantro.
