impact the young people in your life. Speaking of young people, do you have a young man (or woman) at home looking for summer employment? Please encourage them to consider opportunities with our trusted local advertising partners. I recently had lunch with Kevin Willaman and a couple of his crew at Willaman Designs. Those young men told me how much they enjoy working outside every day and said Kevin is teaching them skills that will be valuable throughout their lives. For more outside jobs this summer, I’m certain Kevin and Bryan Rice could use some good young men and women on their Rice’s landscaping crews. We wrote

AN ELECTRIC CAR WITH THE SOUL AND FEEL OF A PORSCHE? Sounds impossible, but it has become reality with the release of the Porsche Taycan, the first completely electric vehicle from the luxury performance automaker. “To Porsche owners, performance is everything,” says Adam Alkassmi of Porsche Beachwood in Beachwood, Ohio. “The Taycan offers the performance, styling and heritage that Porsche owners expect.” He touts the vehicle’s powerful battery system, including "Overboost" power for added oomph when it is needed most. The base model Taycan goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 5.1 seconds. By comparison, the Toyota Prius takes nearly twice as long at 9.7 seconds. A 9.5-hour charge provides approximately 200 miles of range and a top track speed of 143 miles per hour. There are several versions of the Taycan available, including sporty models with more power and even a hatchback model with more storage room. “The Taycan fits a variety of lifestyles, from convenience and practicality to power and performance,” says Adam. Taycan was introduced just last year, with the rear-wheel drive base model debuting this year (the others are all-wheel drive). It has proved popular with Porsche fans who want to escape from fossil fuels, but don’t want to drive a small, boxy vehicle stereotypical of electric cars. CityLifestyle.com/Canton

It’s very accessible and utterly delicious. As the brewmaster himself puts it, there’s thinking beer and then there’s drinking beer. This one’s the latter.

“Coaching this team has been like creating a family and in some ways I pick up 8 new nephews a year. The players literally call my wife ‘Aunt DeAnna,’” boasts Matt. “A few years ago, the team captain asked my daughter to be the flower girl in his wedding. It tells me we’re making an impact.” His own son plays club hockey at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Matt is working to schedule a game in October where he will coach Akron against the son’s team. It is a day they are both looking forward to. Matt is also hopeful that other teams will create their own Life U programs. “I’ve spoken about Life U on a number of podcasts about how we’d be happy to share our syllabus with other coaches,” promises Matt. “We’re a unicorn right now and that’s a problem. I’d give up the competitive advantage if we could expand this program.”

C oach in g Ca re e r Matt Koch (aka “Coach Cookie”) started working at hockey schools at age 15. His first boss, Mitch Korn, taught Matt more about business than hockey. When knee surgery and a broken jaw sidelined Matt in high school, his University School Head Coach, Brian Teeple, gave him an outlet of working with JV. He coached local youth teams while away at college in Oxford, Ohio. Matt estimates he’s coached 80 or so players over the decade spent with Akron. His day job as a family wealth advisor is like coaching, just on a different scale.

OUTDOOR RELAXATION IS ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL OUTDOOR LIVING IS ALL THE RAGE. Families are eschewing screened porches and concrete slabs for upscale outdoor areas that serve as extensions of their living space. The mission of bringing more of life outside has driven Willaman Designs owner Kevin Willaman for his entire career. “All projects have three basic components: time, space and budget,” says Kevin. “I want people to ARTICLE

any of those three.” Here we spotlight three of Kevin’s projects that demonstrate how outdoor living can be achieved in a variety of ways.

Canton Lifestyle | June 2021

The owner of this Lake Township property wanted a unified outdoor space that served all three rear exits of her home. Kevin created this linear design using stamped granite and a detailed granite border. It met the owner’s functional objectives and connected the outdoor space to the home’s driveway. The color of the granite coordinates with the colors of the house, keeping with Kevin’s philosophy about making outdoor spaces an extension of the home. In this second project, the patio already existed, but the owner wanted to bring definition to the area and create a courtyard effect. Kevin added columns to enhance the flow from the house to the outdoor space and used Unilock® walls with custom limestone caps to create a perimeter border that doubles as seating. Perhaps the most dramatic feature doesn’t show up in the picture; dimmable LED lights built in underneath the caps and columns provide soothing light after dark. “No project is the same,” says Kevin. “Here, because of the existing patio, we did a lot of engineering on site to create a uniform look.”

Believe it or not, the patio above used to be a dead space situated between a house and a dock on the Portage Lakes. Now, it’s transformed into this relaxing oasis. Concrete pavers form the base. An outdoor bar is included near the house. LED lights are also used here to provide illumination and add personality at night. “We took what was essentially unused space and created an inviting stage for gatherings,” says Kevin. Designs since 1999. Over the years, he’s seen more families pivot from outdoor decks to patios and hardscapes. “Patios offer more privacy, plus you’re not boxed in and they are easier to maintain than wooden decking,” says Kevin. He has a mix of materials available in his palette to achieve the unique objectives of each space, including those from the venerable, locally based institution Belden Brick.

THE BETTER SOLUTION FOR YOUR ACHES AND PAINS

SORE MUSCLES, ACHING LOWER BACK, SWOLLEN KNEES, THE LIST GOES ON. We can all name something that has been bothering us for a long time. It seems we visit the doctor time and time again, but nothing seems to help. Let me tell you firsthand, when it’s time for some self-care, cryotherapy is definitely a great solution. When I walked into CryoTherapy Plus Luxury Spa (CPLS) in Akron, I definitely walked out as a changed person. According to Sandra Noll, owner of CryoTherapy Plus Luxury Spa, cryotherapy exposes the body to ultra-cold temperatures which sort of tricks your body into thinking it’s freezing to death. “The process boosts your endorphins and metabolism so throughout the day, you’ll burn an extra 500-800 calories,” says Sandra. I actually got to try it for myself and it was intense, to say the least. Unlike an ice bath, your body will get used to the cold temperatures, then relax afterward. With cryotherapy, it can be done before or after a workout and leaves you feeling ready to take on the rest of your day.
