GET TO KNOW FOUR INFLUENTIAL WOMEN AND THE TIRELESS WORK THEY DO TO IMPROVE OUR COMMUNITY
MARY ELLEN ICAZA CEO OF THE STARK COUNTY DISTRICT LIBRARY HOW DID YOU END UP HERE? I intended to work at an academic library until I interned at my local public library. I really enjoyed the spontaneity and impact of the work and improving people’s lives. After a few years though, I wanted to have a larger voice. That is when I took this opportunity in 2018, and my family moved here from Maryland. I work with my team to set our strategic vision. We pride ourselves in welcoming everyone and serving our community. WHAT IS IMPORTANT ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? Providing access to information and services that people might not otherwise have. For example, we are the Stark County affiliate of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. If education is the pathway out of poverty, then early literacy is the handrail, and putting books in the hands of children is very important to me. We have also been able to provide virtual programming, online media, Wi-Fi hotspots and tech support throughout a pandemic. I think it is important we exist to provide these services. ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG WOMEN? There is more opportunity here than people might realize, so get to know where you live and become involved. Lean in and have a voice at the table! Visit StarkLibrary.org for more information.

Women Making a Difference
MAIHARRIESE WOODEN THE DETERMINED WOMAN BEHIND STARK BLESSING BOX INITIATIVE WHY DID YOU CREATE STARK BLESSING BOX INITIATIVE? I used to be a single mom, laid off because my employer closed and I needed welfare assistance. There are good people there, but the system reduces you to your income and is very dehumanizing. Although it was a brief period in my life, I will never forget how I felt. I discovered blessing boxes while living in Columbus. If you need food or detergent, you take it. Nobody judges you for your situation. Anonymity preserves dignity, and that is important to me. HOW HAS IT GROWN? Starting out it was just God and me filling a couple of boxes. Now I have great volunteers, 13 boxes in various neighborhoods, and hopefully 21 boxes by the end of 2021. It can be difficult for people to trust something that is not yet a nonprofit, and I don’t blame them. Nonprofits mean rules and accountability, but also peace of mind for donors and volunteers. It is a work in progress for sure. WHAT COUNSEL WOULD YOU OFFER YOUNG STARK WOMEN? Value yourself enough to care for yourself. That will allow you to take care of others. Once you do, all the beautiful things you want to accomplish will flow out. Learn more at StarkBlessingBox.com.

DEBRA NEFF-MAURER WEARER OF MANY HATS AT GIRLS ON THE RUN EAST CENTRAL OHIO HOW DID YOU END UP AT GOTRECO? I was drawn to Girls on the Run because I’ve witnessed bullying first hand, and I love that this program teaches girls to stand up for themselves and others. We build on confidence, competence, caring, connection, character, contribution and physical activity. I’ve been with the council for three years and became Executive Director in 2021. HOW IS THE SPRING 2021 SEASON GOING SO FAR? Great, all things considered! We have 395 girls registered which surpasses our goal of 300. I believe we would have close to 600 girls had circumstances permitted. We provide a safe and inclusive environment for them to be social and active. It is a noncompetitive program, so they can walk, run or hop to the finish line! Our Celebration 5K event is on May 15. CARE TO SHARE A GOTRECO LESSON? This is how we teach the girls to resolve conflict: Stop, breathe, think, respond and evaluate. First stop yourself from acting immediately, then take five breaths while thinking of ways to react. Next choose a way to respond and review how you feel about your decision. This has really helped me over the past year and I think we can all learn from it. Head to GOTRECO.org for further reading.

to love it,” says Dr. Theresa. They even followed in their father’s footsteps by attending St. Louis University for Orthodontics.
Since 2015, Dr. Theresa has worked alongside her dad, Dr. Nick, and brother, Dr. Nate, at Mellion’s three Stark county locations — which she says is the most enjoyable part of her job. “Dad has been a terrific mentor for both of us, but he also steps back and lets us do our thing,” says Dr. Theresa. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, males represent about

72% of orthodontists; however, there are a growing number of females entering the field. Currently, half of orthodontists under the age of 35 are women. “It’s a wonderful career for everyone and definitely a woman,” says Dr. Theresa. “You can basically set your own hours and still be a mom. If I did it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.” Mellion Orthodontics spans the generations in its patient population as well, serving customers ages seven to 75. Some of Dr. Nick’s patients from decades ago are now bringing their children in for treatment. They also have a few staff members who have been with the practice since Theresa was born. Mellion Orthodontics is a family affair in so many ways - Theresa even married a dentist (Nathan Minter). All three docs are committed to community involvement and serve on the craniofacial team at Akron Children’s Hospital. “It’s a very rewarding experience,” says Dr. Theresa. “Watching these kids gain significant confidence and finally have the ability to smile is incredible.” Learn more about Dr. Theresa and the entire practice at MellionOrthodontics.com. HER STRONG WORK ETHIC, SPIRITUALITY AND EYE FOR BEAUTY AND STYLE KEEP RUTHANNE WILKOF ACTIVE PROFESSIONALY, PERSONALLY AND PHILANTHROPICALLY
SERVICE-ORIENTED SALES LEADER. Real estate and lifestyle entrepreneur. Proud philanthropist. Dog lover. There are many ways to describe Ruthanne Wilkof, and she would say there are many people in her life who have helped her achieve success and happiness. “I love what I do because I love working with and helping people,” says Ruthanne. After 29 years in banking, ten at the helm of the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce and 7 in real estate, there aren’t many folks in Stark county Ruthanne hasn’t met. In fact, before the blind date where she met her now husband, Ron, she expected to have already met him somewhere. She was wrong, but Ron was “Mr Right,” and the pair married six months later. After 21 years of marriage, Ruthanne describes her husband as a “precious and caring” man and a “true blessing” in her life. “Not a day goes by without Ron telling me how lucky he is to be married to me,” says Ruthanne. “In fact, I’m the fortunate one!”

WONDER WOMAN WILKOF (CONTINUED)
She is quick to crack a joke, but even quicker to credit Ron with the enduring support that has contributed to her happiness and success. Ruthanne also credits her hardworking parents for the strong work ethic that has contributed to her successful career and good life. As the youngest of four in a middle-class Italian family in Plain Township, Ruthanne learned how to work from her mother and father, who were loyal and hardworking employees at the local credit bureau and Stark Ceramics, respectively. “Dad strongly encouraged my brothers to have a paper route when they were young, and later to work their way through college,” recalls Ruthanne. “My parents couldn’t afford to pay for college, even though my dad was very frugal.” Like their brothers, Ruthanne and her sister learned the value of hard work, saving their money and stability at a young age. During her senior year of high school, Ruthanne worked three different jobs while studying stenography. She went to class from 8 a.m. to noon, then work 1 to 5 p.m. at Citizens Savings Bank. After graduation, while employed full-time at Citizens Savings Bank, Ruthanne worked nights at the Caren Charles store at Belden Village Mall and hosted Home Interior & Gifts parties in private homes.. “I always loved interior design but never went to school for it, so I sold ‘decor on wheels,’” explains Ruthanne. “Women would host in-home parties, and I would pack my car full, then unpack and creatively display home decorating items in their homes. I did this parttime for eleven years and had great success.” After 29 years in banking, Ruthanne was appointed President & CEO of the JacksonBelden Chamber of Commerce. Her first new member was her husband Ron, owner of Wilkof Supply Co. It was the first of many as she grew the Chamber from 211 to 800 members during her leadership.
