It's Time to Enjoy the Outside IT WAS JUST DAYS BEFORE DEADLINE IN EARLY MARCH WHEN THE WEATHER FINALLY BROKE. Our feature story, Get Out and Ride, had been written but we had yet been able to score the accompanying photographs. With temps above 50, the sun had melted the snow for favorable cycling conditions. Mike Schiltz and Christopher Smith, both of Plain Township, invited Canton Lifestyle on a 34-mile ride just southeast of Canton.

We spent two hours traversing miles of rolling hills this lifelong Stark County resident has never traveled, enjoying the sites of farms and fields, creeks and ponds, and very little traffic to disrupt the ride of our AnyRoad cyclists. Since Mike and Chris were not credited in the article, we hoped to find the perfect shot to feature them on the cover. After maybe a dozen different stops along their carefully routed Strava course, we gleefully previewed a drone image of the two riders racing down a gravel covered hill, side by side, with a controlled expression of exhilaration on their faces. With a celebratory fist bump, we pulled away. It wasn’t until later that night that we discovered the photo had not been uploaded to

When the company donates landscaping services to projects like Honor Home transitional housing or Meals On Wheels, employees are fundamentally involved with their passion for giving. These community projects are a regular occurrence for Rice’s and much anticipated, but the giving doesn’t end with landscaping. They support a variety of beneficent organizations, such as Pegasus Farm’s Military Family Center, Sancta Clara Monastery and Boy Scouts of America. The five core principles of Rice’s Landscapes Redefined are ingrained into their workers, then spread throughout employee their families and loved ones and into the rest of the public at large. A BICYCLE IS THE PERFECT WAY TO EXPLORE THE WORLD AROUND YOU THIS SPRING

SUNLIGHT BATHES THE LAND, WARMING THE GROUND AND STIRRING AN URGE TO ESCAPE THE ALL-TOO-FAMILIAR HOME INTO THE REVITALIZING SPRING AIR. Among the greatest ways to experience the resurgence of nature is streaking past it on a bike. Luckily, Canton and surrounding areas boast cycling opportunities for a variety of riding styles. Outdoor activities like cycling have experienced a surge in popularity in recent years. Recreational riding provides a unique perspective on the world, creates openings for safe socialization, and can improve cardiovascular and overall fitness. Biking doesn’t have to be exhausting to be fun or beneficial, making it an ideal pastime or family activity. Debbie Lehman, who runs Ernie’s Bike Shop in Massillon, North Canton and New Philadelphia with her husband, the shop’s namesake, is an advocate for area trails. She recommends the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail for casual nature rides. The Towpath Trail covers 87 miles between Cleveland and Canal Dover. Following the Tuscarawas River through Stark County, it’s as flat as the water itself. This makes for a relaxed cycling experience that appeals to all skill levels.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE (CONTINUED)

Much of the path is tree-covered and it affords a variety of scenery. Best of all, the trailheads are spaced out regularly enough that a rider is never too far from rest and rejuvenation. “For an example,” says Debbie, “From Lake Avenue trailhead in Massillon, where you have access to downtown, it’s only 9 miles to Canal Fulton, where there’s all kinds of restaurants and ice cream. An average rider could do that in ninety minutes, two hours at most.” Debbie also suggests the Sippo Valley Trail, running 10 miles from Massillon to Dalton. An abandoned railway that has been improved for bike use, it is also relatively level and runs through idyllic farmland. It’s a favorite haunt of Stark County Bicycle Club (SCBC), which hosts group rides there every Sunday. SCBC is a Canton-based organization with hundreds of members and thousands of organized rides under its belt. They support any riding style at any skill level, but generally focus on social road rides. This means that the opportunities for routes are nearly endless. Newsletter Editor and nearly 30-year member Dave Cardarella suggests starting in North Canton and heading east toward Marlboro and Alliance. Dave rides a tandem bike with his significant other and so prefers these flatter routes. Member and Trustee Sally Griffiths, however, says she’s in it more for the challenge. She joins faster-paced group rides from Lake Community Park into Hartville, where the traffic is lighter and the atmosphere is serene. Griffiths applauds the camaraderie of group riding and the health benefits of cycling in general. “During my 28-mile ride, my computer told me I burned like 1,200 calories. Where else can you do that?” she says.

FINANCIAL BUZZ

HELPING PRESERVE FAMILY FINANCES

TALK MORE ABOUT MONEY WITH KIDS TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY'S LEGACY

MOST INVESTORS WORK TOWARD THE PRIMARY GOAL OF

ARTICLE WM. MATTHEW KOCH

BUILDING A PORTFOLIO THAT OUTLIVES THEM. At the top of

PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY FRAVEL

the secondary goals list, however, is helping your children and/or grandchildren become competent investors. The adage, “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” suggests that wealth never survives three generations because grandchildren have a tendency to squander the legacy built by their grandparents and parents. Here are three simple ways to avoid this cycle:

Talk about money. In our society, personal finance can be an awkward topic. That won’t be the case inside your home if you involve kids in decisions like buying a car. Talk about which vehicle makes sense for your family, and discuss the pros and cons of buying new vs. used. Ask questions like, “How much will the vehicle actually cost if we finance it?” and “What else could we do with that money?” to help them understand the weight of these decisions.

Set the example. If you contribute to a 401k or other retirement plan, show your kids the plan. Explain how you selected the investments you own; describe the emotions of watching the balances go up and down; tell them how often you review your portfolio. Kids are sponges, and your habits will have an impact on their future financial decisions.

28

Canton Lifestyle | April 2021

Create a family 401k. If your child is prepared to save money and not touch it until you mutually agree on a particular purchase, offer them a match in a family 401k. Having their own “skin in the game” is a powerful way to get their attention. Investment mistakes they make as a teen might cost hundreds of dollars, but it’s better than making the mistake after age fifty and losing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Passing on sound financial and investing habits is a tremendous act of love. Children are unlikely to learn these skills in school. I believe it is an exceptionally valuable investment of a parent's time to take the fear out of investing and break this cycle.

Benefits of a

chemical-free home

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.
