his summer presented me with the opportunity to be reminded about the glorious wildlife that shares our beautiful home. Animals big and small are all around us. They can be found on land, in the air and in our bodies of water. It can be easy enough to take them for granted. Sometimes, they can even be nuisances. But other times, they can take your breath away. First, I went on a whale watch with Cape Ann Whale Watch out of Gloucester a few months back. It was certainly not my first trip. I’ve gone out to see whales at least a dozen times in my life. I was by no means expecting to be awed. That was before my expectations were literally blown out of the water.

By the time we found ourselves near Provincetown, our boat was totally surrounded by feeding humpbacks. One group of whales was bubble net feeding. Another was kick feeding. There must have been 20 whales and thousands of sand eels on all sides of the boat. One humpback calf full breached at least three times. Even the crew of our boat was struck by the magnitude of the day. The other opportunity to bond with local wildlife happened right in my back yard. Rabbits are no strangers to my Beverly neighborhood, but I’d never had the opportunity to observe rabbits at the beginning of their lives. Until, that is, one rabbit decided that my back yard was a perfect place for a nest. Fortunate to have avoided the blades of my lawnmower, baby bunnies started emerging from the nest. I counted six babies scattered around the yard at one point. They would emerge from the nest for several hours and then return, waiting for mother to feed them. Over time, they all left the nest. I cannot say what became of them, but they certainly left their mark on me.

Windover Warriors Raise $11,000-plus Windover Construction’s Windover Warriors team raised more than $11,000 for the annual Relay for Life of Danvers event, benefitting the American Cancer Society. Held May 9 at Danvers High School, the event registered 31 teams and 374 participants to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost, and raise funds and awareness. The Windover team’s effort surpassed its goal of $7,600, helping to make this year’s event a record breaking one, raising more than $56,000.

Windover is committed to giving back to the communities where they work and live and support a number of worthwhile causes on a regular basis. Creating a Windover Relay for Life team was a natural choice. The Windover Warriors embarked on an eight-week campaign that included a raffle, monetary donations, construction of Mother’s Day planters and team t-shirts. The fundraising campaign culminated with the 12-hour overnight event in Danvers. “We are so grateful for the support and donations from so many of our employees and industry partners who embraced the campaign and helped us to surpass our goal,” says Stuart Meurer, vice president of Windover Construction. “Windover promotes a culture of giving back. n May 2013, four friends came together to open the bar and restaurant Short & Main, ideally located at the corner of Short Street and Main Street in Gloucester. Co-owner Matt Cawley says as the friends came together to start this venture, they looked at a variety of locations and considered many themes. Cawley has been working together with his friends and colleagues for years, at places like Chez Panisse in California and The Market Restaurant in Gloucester. They definitely know a thing or two about the industry. They realized that Gloucester was in need of a spot to get truly excellent pizza. And when it comes to pizza, there’s no comparison to those from a wood-fire oven. Upon entering Short & Main, the atmosphere certainly grabs your attention. As soon as you walk in, you get the feeling that the food is going to be delicious. The dining room seats 65 people and overlooks the community on Main Street. Meanwhile, the kitchen, wood-fire brick oven and chefs are all fully visible to the dining room. The wood-fire oven is especially captivating, as the internal temperature

will rise to nearly 1,000 degrees and can cook a dish in under a minute. Which brings us to the single most impressive bit about Short & Main: its menu. Short & Main features a raw bar, antipasti, salads and fresh pizzas. But the truly impressive part is that the chefs in the kitchen design a new menu daily. The restaurant collaborates with the Gloucester Farmer’s Market, Backyard Grower’s Program and local suppliers from farms and fishermen within a roughly 20-mile radius to provide the ingredients for its dishes. Almost everything is made in house, from the syrups for signature cocktails to the sausage that tops the pizzas. In fact, Short & Main actually butchers and cures its own meat on site each week for toppings and other dishes.

Every time you visit, there will be something different available to try. No two nights will ever be the same. Now going into its second year, the team at Short & Main are even more committed to the full dining experience. This is evident from how everyone approaches each other and the patrons. The restaurant extends a welcoming familiarity to everyone as they come in to dine, as if you were going to a casual dinner party at a friend’s house. It is perfectly suited for a first date or a family outing. It is intimate and fun. Genuinely ending up on first-name basis with anyone on staff is not out of the question. On the second floor, aptly named Upstairs, the restaurant just completed a new bar and event space, including beautifully installed hardwood floors that Cawley laid by hand. Their goal is to have a space where people of all ages can gather. For example, you may occasionally find a ping-pong table set up and available for patrons to enjoy. On Mondays, there’s live music, and every Thursday through Sunday there is a DJ. Short & Main has also expanded to include more original events, such as the screening of the documentary “Shellshocked,” which focus-

es on bringing wild oysters back to NY Harbor. This event included a discussion with the director and an oyster tasting. Short & Main plans to host more events in the future including rehearsal dinners and even weddings. The entire downtown Gloucester com-

munity has embraced the restaurant. Cawley says that itâ€™s been exciting to get to know the neighboring businesses and the customers. If the crowd on a Saturday night is any indication, Short & Main will be around for a good long time.

ach September, sculptors from all over New England are invited to display their work on the 100-acre campus of Pingree School in Hamilton. Opening September 1 and running through November, the Fifth Annual Flying Horse Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit will feature more than 35 artists and 40 sculptures. The Annual Flying Horse Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit was started in 2010 and has become a popular fall activity for Cape Ann residents, Pingree students and faculty. “Our open vistas, hedge garden, pond and entry drive all provide such perfect backdrops for art. Since art has always been an integral part of a Pingree education, it seems fitting that we should be a setting for such an exhibit,” Head of School Dr. Timothy M. Johnson wrote in his letter announcing the exhibit in 2013. In 1931, Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Pingree established the Hamilton property and founded Flying Horse Farm, named for the flagship of the shipping fleet owned by Mary Weld Pingree’s father. After the Pingrees gave their land for the establishment of the school in 1960, it adopted the Pegasus as its mascot in tribute to its benefactors. This year’s exhibit coincides with the school’s opening of its new arts and athletics facilities. The facilities are designed to meet the specific curriculum-needs of the school and are focused on supporting the participation, collaboration and exploration of arts in every discipline.

Arts education is a cornerstone at Pingree School. “The arts are an essential part of Pingree’s curriculum,” says Judy Klein, director and organizer of the Flying Horse Sculpture Exhibit. “Each incoming student has to take an art rotation their first year. It is the rare student who doesn’t continue to take advantage of our art program through their time at Pingree. Even those that are pursuing math and science continue to pursue the visual and performing arts.” Klein says the exhibit enables students to live with art and gives community members access to the work being done by regional artists. This year, two

teachers are included in the exhibit: Eric Olson and Rick Erickson. “The sculptures include representational and non-representational forms,” Klein says. “They are made from cast bronze, rope, glass, wood, recycled pipes and rubber tires. The diversity of the sculptures set against Pingree’s beautiful rolling hills is the perfect way to experience art.” Klein served as the director of Communications, Marketing & Community Programs at Pingree and now consults on marketing and program development with schools and non-profits. cy and have been featured at numerous exhibitions including “Seascape” at Boston’s Logan Airport. From his Essex studio, Williams welds incredibly intricate metal sculptures. Working in bronze, steel, iron and glass, his pieces blend the natural world with the fantastic. Williams often collaborates with artists, such as Gloucester artist Aron Leaman. In his bronze piece “Tree Frog,” the beautiful red eyes of the frog are handblown by Leaman. “Collaborating with artists is a great experience,” Williams says. “We each have our own energy and our own direction. It’s incredible to bring that together into one piece.” A native of Cape Ann, Williams is a third generation metalworker. In his

family’s metal workshop in Rockport, Williams grew up creating sculptures with the tools and metal scraps he found. “I grew up around a lot of artists,” he says. “We are so lucky to live in Cape Ann, in a community that fundamentally appreciates art. It’s amazing to create public pieces and leave them for everyone to enjoy.” Williams says he started sculpting for fun. “It’s something I’ve always enjoyed,” he says. “But I learned quickly that the world is craving the culture of creativity. It’s amazing how much art history plays a role in our daily lives. As artists we are totally aware that there are people behind us. This show is more than an exhibit, it shows that whatever art is put in the community is a stepping-stone for future artists. The momentum and energy of art is a draw into the community. It propels the next generation. It’s never about the moment, it’s

orseback riding has long been a staple of our Cape Ann communities. Driving the winding back roads of Cape Ann and the wider North Shore, it doesn’t take long to pass by a stable, grazing horses, or riders on their mounts. One of the local stable proprietors, Margo Kusulas of Turning Leaf Farm in Essex, has keen insight into the current state of horseback riding in the region. Originally from Long Island, Kusulas is an experienced hunter jumper trainer who has worked from New England to New Jersey. She has trained with Olympic rider Anne Kursinski. She has operated from her current Turning Leaf Farm location, on Southern Avenue in Essex just off Rt. 133, since 2005. Turning Leaf Farm is located on five acres of land and has stables for 24 horses, paddocks and an indoor training ring. Also on the property is a small roadside farm stand that features an array of local fruits, vegetables, pies, milk, syrup, bread, pastries, jellies and eggs. Kusulas lives down the road on a 15-acre property that she uses for additional training and storage space. With a strong hunter jumper background, Kusulas has always had a focus on the competitive end of the equestrian business. 20

Many of her boarders are active horseshow participants, competing in various local and regional events, including the prestigious Massachusetts Horsemen’s Council and New England Horsemen’s Council finals. “But we’ve seen that the changing economy has required us to diversify, so we do a little bit of everything,” Kusulas says. “We offer everything from beginner lessons to showing to beach rides. Many people want those services, and it is gratifying to have a balance of riders and to be open to all people. If we can get people into the sport, they can grow into it and become more competitive if they choose.” For her boarders, Kusulas offers full board, training and lessons. Kusulas says providing ongoing training and lessons for boarders helps them reach for their goals and improve their skills. She serves adults and kids from all over: Hamilton, Manchesterby-the-Sea, Essex and beyond. “We focus on learning all aspects of horsemanship, not just chasing blue ribbons,” Kusulas says. “Whether they are showing or non-competitive, they need to be able to know how the horse

feels and be in tune with them. We work on dressage with the horses as part of training. Being on Cape Ann is great because there is something for everyone out there. We take people riding on Crane’s Beach and do some trail riding. Many freelance trainers travel between barns, too.” Most of the horses at Turning Leaf are imported warmblood horses. Kusulas says she is regularly involved in horse sales, and is looking to get more involved in the sale of championship-caliber horses. “Ten of the horses here are mine, some of which are competitive and a few are retired,” Kusulas says. “Hunter jumper is my focus as a rider, and one of my goals is to bring along a top jumper.” Kusulas is well aware the horseback riding can be an expensive and intimidating pastime, but she believes providing options can help alleviate those concerns. Offering services such as half-leases and lessons to the public are ways she thinks more people can get involved with the sport. “The sport offers the chance to be around animals and learn respect for nature and the value of hard work,” Kusulas says. “It teaches time management, budgeting and teamwork.” Although Kusulas and many of her riders take part in many events, she is hopeful that a major horseshow will return to our region in the coming years. She referred to The Jumper Classic, once an annual event but cancelled in 2013. “A world-class horseshow in a nice spot and with a friendly schedule could be a wonderful event and bring money into the economy in this area,” Kusulas says. For now, she is happy to be part of carrying on the tradition of horseback riding on Cape Ann. Kusulas and Turning Leaf Farm will continue to promote the sport and hopefully help to inspire the next generation of local riders.

“There are many ways to get into this sport,” she says. “It takes work, but there are a lot of options for those who are interested in riding.”

adelyn Wnorowski is about to enter her senior year at The Landmark School in Prides Crossing. With campuses in Prides Crossing and Manchester-by-the-Sea, Landmark School serves students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities in grades 2 to 12. “I’m excited, nervous and a little sad that it’s my senior year. Time has gone by so quickly,” Wnorowski says. This summer marks a big transition, from looking to return to her dorm on campus to exploring what her future holds. Wnorowski’s exuberance and passion bubbles over as she speaks. She is clearly passionate about many things. “I’m a total people person, I get my energy from being around others,” Wnorowski says. Wnorowski has explored a lot since enrolling at Landmark School. To start off, she's enthusiastic about drama. “I’ve been in every single play for the last two years,” she says. There are three each year. As a sophomore, she was in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in which she played the role of Bottom. “I went in completely terrified. I was brand new to the school and it was a huge role,” Wnorowski says. Exploring Shakespeare must have seemed easy to being cast as a junior in The Laramie Project.

“That experience was really interesting and the most meaningful play I’ve been in,” Wnorowski says. “There were a lot of characters and it was great that both a lot of students and staff were in the play. I got to play three different characters on my own. I’ve always known theatre can be powerful and that it can make a difference, but this play really opened my eyes. It was amazing to be part of that.” For this coming year, she has no idea as to what shows are going to be selected. “But I’m excited not to know and to be surprised,” she says. While having a full courseload and rehearsing for three different productions would be enough for any high school senior, Wnorowski has started to explore other cultures as well. This past March, she took part in a mission trip to Jamaica. “We went to two different schools and an orphanage,” Wnorowski says. “My group worked with them to make puppets. Of course, at the end we did a puppet show.” It was such a great experience, Wnorowski decided to make a mission trip part of her summer vacation. This time it will be to Mexico with members of her family. Despite being nervous about the upcoming school year, Wnorowski is brimming with excitement for the classes she’s taking.

Her courses will include Early Childhood Education, which will include participating in the school’s onsite daycare center, Tot Spot, a few days a week for practical work. Also, she applied and got into Student Advocates, in which she will learn how to speak up for others by doing out reach to other schools and educating them about students with learning disabilities. And all this leads to the varied options Wnorowski is exploring for after graduation. One of her big goals is to study foreign policy. “I love mission work and I believe that there’s a need for strong people to be in government,” Wnorowski says. “But I’m seriously considering doing a gap year as well to do a long-term mission and really get to explore what my path is. I think it would help lead to a decision. Mostly, I want to get out there and work with people.” Wnorowski says she’d like to follow in the footsteps of Mother Theresa or Gandhi.

“They were leaders that changed the world. They started with small acts that made a huge impact,” she says. When considering schools for college, Wnorowski says she’s thought about heading to school in California. She says she is a summer person, and it has been her dream since the 8th grade. She also wants to go to a Christian school to be supported in her faith. Some of the schools she’s considering include Westmont College, Vanguard University and Chapman University. The biggest impact for Wnorowski thus far has been her time at The Landmark School. She gushed about her experience. “I always knew I had a learning disability but I didn’t know what that meant,” Wnorowski says. “But now I do, and I know

how to seek the support I need and advocate for myself. I wouldn’t have found my path if not for Landmark. I needed individualized teaching. When I started here three years ago, I was at a 7th or 8th grade reading level. Now, I’m going to be a senior and I’m at a college reading level. I know myself more and I know how I have to work. I’ve flourished so much.”

His team performs a risk analysis on all potential clients, ranking them on a scale of 1 to 10, looking for individuals in the middle ranges of 4 to 8, rather than those who want to park money or gamble. “We are able to manage hundreds of clients thanks in part to the risk level program we’ve developed,” Riquier says. Not only has this approach helped grow client assets during the booms, it has also

helped save client assets during the busts. Riquier and his team saw the writing on the wall ahead of major market crashes in 2000 and 2008. Riquier was able to advise clients to get their money out of stocks and into money market accounts before they suffered major losses. “The No. 1 goal is the preservation of capital,” Riquier says. “We follow the 80-20 rule. It takes 20 percent of the time in a boom to see 80 percent of your growth, and you will see 80 percent of your losses in 20 percent of the time in a bust. We believe that if you want immediate results, you plant annuals. But if you plan for the future, you plant trees.” Educating the public and staying on top of industry trends are important parts of Riquier’s business. He offers as many as 10 financial classes annually, covering many different financial and regulatory topics. Some of them are hosted at The Barn. On top of that, the company hosts quarterly Economic Summits featuring special guest speakers at the Peabody Marriott and invites the public. The economy has come a long way since

the depths of the Great Recession in 2008, but domestic and international turmoil makes the future anything but certain. However, Riquier believes that people can make the best decisions about their retirement funds when they are educated about their options and have a reliable partner looking out for their best interests. “We look for the cyclical movements of the markets, and we want to help people

learn so they can make the best possible decisions on what to do with their retirement money and how to transfer wealth to their children,” Riquier says. The new Lexus NX features numerous firsts in a Lexus: the allnew 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine has a combination water-cooled cylinder head, integrated exhaust manifold and twinscroll turbocharger; a kick-down switch in the hybrid, which, as in conventional vehicles, ensures maximum power is delivered when required; and, the front axle adopts a pre-load differential to control differential torque. It assists turning on slippery roads and straight-line stability at high speed. The hybrid battery pack in the NX 300h is split into two modules, located on each side of the rear seat, improving space efficiency and also center of gravity for enhanced car control. The battery pack is one of the lightest among Lexus hybrids. The engineering team’s racing experience comes through in the way the 2015 Lexus NX handles curves and bumps. Engineers benchmarked the new Lexus IS to optimize driving dynamics in the NX. The foundation for the vehicle’s sublime blend of handling agility and ride comfort is a highly rigid body structure that makes extensive use of hot-stamped high tensile steel along with aluminum.

The Lexus NX uses MacPherson strut front suspension with high-rigidity components and low-friction moving parts. A newly designed trailing arm double wishbone rear suspension separates the coil springs and dampers to optimize agility, stability and ride comfort while also providing an unusually low floor for an SUV. The concept of making a vehicle look as if it was styled from a single piece of metal is a long-held image in the auto industry. The NX design team took that image to heart. They used the die of the spindle grille as a base over which molten steel was poured to see how the shape would naturally form. The result inspired the NX’s angular, integral shape. The NX’s C-pillar is angled and wide to optimize internal storage width. Stepping into the Lexus NX will feel like stepping into a sports car. The cabin design combines structural elements with luxurious yet functional materials and textures. The center console is the undeniable focal point, framed by bold silver-col-

ored architectural elements. From its dramatic spindle grille and L-themed headlights to a body that appears carved from a single chunk of metal, there will be no mistaking the 2015 Lexus NX for anything else in its class.
