LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello friends, Do you love weeding as much as I do? There's something so very satisfying about tidying up a bed of flowers or vegetables and digging out the stalky grasses, invasive broadleaves and sassy sedges. I spend time on an organic farm (between publishing issues of the magazine) where I can put my penchant for weeding to good use. Today, I worked on a rather neglected 50-foot bed of arugula for nearly two hours, coaxing the amaranth from its deep roots and plucking unwelcome grasses from between the rows of light green arugula leaves, trying like heck to find space to spread and thrive. I think I heard a collective sigh, each plant finally relaxing instead of elbowing through the weeds. In a few weeks, we'll harvest the bed and send the peppery greens to restaurants and a farmers' market. That's where food comes from. This month, we celebrate the food that someone else cooks for us. We visit restaurants, talk to chefs and celebrate wines and no-proof drinks (one industry pro calls non-alcoholic drinks, "NActails"). Cheers to all the front and back of house staff at our favorite restaurants who bring good food to our tables. And, thank you to the farmers who grow the vegetables and tend the land where our food grazes and grows. Enjoy this issue.

Let’s Go Out! What restaurants around town are serving and celebrating This month, we take you on a tour of local restaurants stirring up seasonal dishes, pouring wine pairings, dreaming up no-proof cocktails and sharing kitchen secrets. We hope next time you dine out, you’ll check out these spots, armed with menu inspiration and local knowledge. Bon Appétit!

CARMEL

CarmelATL.com IG @CarmelATL 3009 Bolling Way NE, Suite G130 Meet Tal Baum, Oliva Restaurant Group Promising new favorites Our three most popular dishes include Oysters, Caviar Fries and the Lobster Roll. Oysters are heavily tied to our identity, and nearly all guests can enjoy them with the many variations we offer. The Caviar Fries are a simple but decadent treat for the table and the Lobster Roll is offered in two classic styles. When to hit “refresh?” Deciding when to retire an item comes down to several factors, but we always consider the item’s performance and sales trends as well as our overall menu composition. We want to ensure a balance of options. Giving back Throughout the year, we participate in community-supporting fundraising events and also provide gift cards to auctions, backing initiatives such as Chastain Park Conservancy, Meals on Wheels, Giving Kitchen and Emory ALS Center.

LeColonial.com/Atlanta IG: @LeColonial_Restaurants 3035 Peachtree Rd NE Meet Declan Nye, National Director of Operations, and Hassan Obaye, National Culinary Director Promising new favorites We’re so excited about our new menu item, La Flamme. The delectable Baked Alaska, crafted by Marta Kantorowicz, combines salted caramel gelato and coconut sorbet with passion fruit, aged shoyu caramel and raspberry crème anglaise. It’s available exclusively during dinner service on Friday and Saturday nights. Perfect pairings For those who prefer a non-alcoholic option, we recommend the Lemongrass Spritz (NA), made with Seedlip Citrus Botanical, lemongrass syrup, yuzu essence and Q Soda. Meanwhile, for diners

interested in a sparkling alcoholic option, we suggest the Gérard Bertrand Crémant Brut, France, ’21. When to hit “refresh?” We’ll usually begin the process of retiring a menu item with an internal menu engineering analysis, which relies on guest feedback and whether an item is losing its popularity due to the season. Then, we’ll create an alternative option that is up to par with whatever is in season. We also like to encourage our local chefs to hone their creativity by providing specials each month.

Tenders featured on Mondays are excellent, and the jalapeño avocado ranch that comes with them is the sleeper star of the dish! Our Fried Catfish and jalapeño hush puppies on Friday (FryDay!) are also worth a visit to try. Thursday Chicken Fried Steak special—a nod to our Texas home and a dish we grew up with—will provide the comfort you need! Tuesdays we are featuring Fox Bros Tacos, Saturdays feature our Pit Smoked Beef Short Ribs and Sundays feature our popular Brisket Burnt Ends. Fan favorites This summer we debuted a new flavor, the first in almost 20 years of operation! A nod to Atlanta, we named them “ATL Style” Smoked Wings. We have made a house-made Buffalo Wing Sauce and toss the wings in that sauce, then finish them with Lemon Pepper Seasoning. Giving back For 11 years, we have been working with a group called “Hogs For The Cause” to raise funds for Atlanta-area families with children battling pediatric cancer through Children’s Health Care of Atlanta. The $1.5 million we have raised over this time goes to the families in the form of a grant to assist with financial needs like bills, rent, groceries, etc. We have hosted Spirit Nights for Woodward Elementary School, and coming soon is a giveback night for St. Martin Episcopal School.

Hot new dish The menu is always evolving. We work with a local forager who brings in some of the best wild foraged products I’ve come across. He’ll send me a photo of beautiful mushrooms one week, then show up the next with a seasonal fruit we can fold into a dessert or a house-made ice cream. When to hit “refresh?” I actually love pulling things off the menu. It gives me something new to work on, and the funny part is, it usually comes back by member request. Fan Favorites First, our classic Caesar salad is a mainstay, made with oilcured brown anchovies and fresh-grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. Our burger is such a favorite that we finally put it on the printed menu, because every ticket now has at least one. Both our roast chicken and market fish always impress because they change with the season, so members can come back every other night and find something new.

has long been known for its lobster roll, and we wanted to create another lobster dish that felt uniquely ours and could become something guests really seek us out for. Perfect pairs Our top wine pairing would be the Stags’ Leap Chardonnay from Napa Valley. It has enough weight to stand up to the richness of the lobster and drawn butter, while the oak complements the sherry in the bisque. For beer, Allagash White is another great pairing. The orange peel and wheat complement the lobster while keeping the finish crisp and refreshing between bites. Big news The Big Ketch received a major refresh this summer, the most significant update to the restaurant since we opened in 2010. We wanted to give the space a fresh new energy while still keeping the laid-back coastal feel that has always been part of The Big Ketch.

The dining room now features a custom mural by local artist Meg Mitchell, along with new artwork, vintage-inspired pieces and a photo wall. One of the more personal additions is a mounted tarpon over the bar, gifted by a longtime friend and guest of The Big Ketch. The patio also received new lighting, brighter colors and updates throughout. Overall, it’s a lighter, brighter and more playful version of The Big Ketch, while still feeling like the neighborhood spot guests have known and loved for years.

ST. CECILIA

StCeceliaAtl.com. IG: @Stceceliaatl 3455 Peachtree Road Northeast Meet Nate Boer, Executive Chef Hot new dish We intend to start serving brunch late fall. It will give us an opportunity to showcase seasonal produce and have a menu that is still true to our coastal Italian influences but with all of the fun brunch vibes. Family meal We are proud to provide a staff meal for our team every day. Camaraderie and being nourished are huge keys to successful service. Our team has a lot of favorites, but the standout ones are typically some variations of tacos and nachos.

We were proud to provide meal sponsorships for the Brookhaven Police Department’s 2nd Annual Teen Academy.

THE ST. REGIS ATLANTA

StRegisAtlanta.com IG@stregisatl 88 West Paces Ferry Road NW Meet Rohit Suvarna, Director of Beverage From the bar Our menu blends iconic luxury brands with modern beverage trends, featuring prestigious wines and Champagnes, inventive cocktails and a growing zero-proof program designed to deliver the same level of sophistication as traditional cocktails. My vision is to position The St. Regis Atlanta Bar among the Top 50 Bars in North America, creating a destination that is recognized alongside the best bars in the U.S. and Canada. To achieve that, we are focused on innovative cocktail and zero-proof programming, exceptional wine experiences, world-class service and industry-leading bar takeovers featuring acclaimed bartenders and bars from around the globe. NAcktails The future of beverage programming is about providing guests with the same level of creativity, craftsmanship and experience regardless of whether they choose alcohol. Our non-alcoholic menu is designed to stand alongside traditional cocktail offerings, featuring spirit-free beverages that are ingredient-driven, visually compelling and thoughtfully paired with the dining experience. The Pink London G&T is a sophisticated take on the classic gin and tonic. Crafted with Lyre’s London Non-Alcoholic Spirit and Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic, it is finished with a striking butterfly pea float that creates a vibrant color transformation in the glass. Loving local Three ingredients I am excited to work with are Georgia peaches, local honey and pandan leaf. I will incorporate Georgia

peaches and local honey into seasonal cocktails and spirit-free offerings that celebrate the flavors of the South, while pandan leaf will reflect the vibrant Asian cultures and communities that contribute to Atlanta’s rich culinary landscape. Through thoughtful infusions, house-made syrups and curated beverage pairings, pandan will bring a unique aromatic quality and subtle vanilla-coconut character to select beverages, creating distinctive drinking experiences that honor both local ingredients and global inspiration while maintaining the luxury and sophistication expected at The St. Regis Atlanta.

Team matters Yesenia Nino is our head server/trainer, and she worked at Violette for about four years before we, as Petite Auberge, merged with Violette and became Petite Violette. Yesenia has been here 15 years total. She also assists with our catering at Brookhaven City Center and knows all the Brookhaven City Council members, Mayor, etc. She is wellloved by the entire community, and of course, the entire Petite Violette staff. What really makes Yesenia special is

Summit Coffee

St. Ceclia

The future of beverage programming is about providing guests with the same level of creativity, craftsmanship and experience regardless of whether they choose alcohol. that she treats regulars and new guests the same, providing excellent service to everyone. She knows that sometimes people feel intimidated by fine dining, so she makes everyone feel comfortable and explains the menu and wine list in a very basic and friendly way. Fan favorites I would say Filet of Beef Wellington, Cotes D’agneau (Rack of Lamb), and Soupe à l’Oignon Gratinée (French Onion Soup) are our most popular/most ordered dishes, and our Pudding Au Pain (New Orleans Bread Pudding) is our most popular dessert. I think it’s because they are such classic French dishes and what many people are looking for when they come to our restaurant.

MICHEL ARNETTE DEBUTS MODERN COASTAL RESTAURANT BROOKHAVEN

“...a dramatic installation of Tom Dixon Melt pendants and a striking illuminated bubble wall behind the bar.” With over two decades of success in Brookhaven with his restaurants Haven, Valenza, Vero and Arnette’s Chop Shop, restaurateur Michel Arnette decided it was time to add a modern coastal seafood restaurant to the neighborhood. Located next to Arnette’s Chop Shop, Arnette dreamed up Siren’s concept for several years, and the result reflects his vision of creating a fresh dining destination centered around wood-fired seafood, pristine ingredients and warm hospitality. “Every restaurant we open starts with the same goal: creating a place people want to come back to,” says Arnette. “With Siren, we’re excited to bring something new to Brookhaven, a fresh take on coastal cuisine paired with the kind of hospitality that makes people feel at home.

Michel Arnette

We hope Siren becomes a place where friends and families celebrate and create memories while continuing to make Brookhaven an even more exciting dining destination.” The restaurant’s menu is led by Co-Executive Chefs Stephen Herman and Matt Swickerath, whose experience cooking over live fire shapes Siren’s culinary identity. Guests can expect oysters, crudos, whole fish and seasonal vegetables prepared with restraint, allowing the quality of each ingredient to shine. “Wood-fire cooking brings out the best in great seafood,” Arnette says. “Our chefs have spent years refining that technique, and the goal is to let exceptional ingredients speak for themselves through simple, thoughtful preparation.” Designed for everything from date nights to lively evenings with friends, Siren pairs its coastal menu with an energetic dining room featuring bold contemporary artwork, a dramatic installation of Tom Dixon Melt pendants and a striking illuminated bubble wall behind the bar. Sommelier Andrew LeClair’s wine list and a cocktail program built around fresh, seasonal ingredients complete the experience. For Arnette, however, the restaurant’s foundation goes beyond the food. “Hospitality has always been at the heart of everything we do,” he says. “It starts with taking care of our team, because when people genuinely care for one another, guests can feel it. That’s what keeps people coming back, and that’s the culture we want Siren to be known for.” WOMRestaurants.com

There is a moment in time, just before a cork gives way to the swiftness of the sword, when the entire world leans in. Brookhaven resident Quinten Wilson has built a company designed especially for that very moment.

The Art of the Saber.

Q10, is a Crémant de Loire made the old way. Méthode traditionnelle. A second fermentation. Years of patience before a single glass is poured. But to call it wine is to miss the point. Quinten, its founder, will tell you gently that the bottle is only a vessel. What he is really making is a bridge. “Q10 is a bridge between Atlanta and the Loire Valley,” says Quinten, “It is a bridge between strangers and friends. A bridge between a Tuesday dinner and a memory you keep for the rest of your life.” The story begins, as the best ones do, with a father. Not a wine man. Something rarer. A man who never met a stranger, who refused to wait for the right moment to savor his own life. When he passed, Quinten understood how often we postpone our joy. Q10 became the answer. Life itself is the occasion. French wine runs on generational access — vineyard land, cellar names, doors that open only for the familiar. Quinten inherited none of that. What he built instead was trust. He found his partner in Langlois, a storied Loire house within the Bollinger family through

shared meals and long conversations — the slow work of two people earning each other’s faith. As a Black wine founder in an industry that rarely makes room at that table, he did not wait to be invited. He pulled up a chair and widened it for everyone watching. There was no vineyard. No inherited French surname. Quinten’s curiosity, consistency and the belief that a remarkable glass can connect people who were never meant to meet fuels Q10 and sets it apart from other sparkling wines. The Loire has always lived a little in Champagne’s shadow, same discipline, less applause. For Quinten, “excellence, quietly pursued, opens doors no one expected.” “I hope Q10 is known not simply for exceptional sparkling wine,” says Quinten, “I hope that it is also known for the relationships, conversations and celebrations it has helped create around the world.” The Occasion is now. And now deserves to be celebrated. Gather your people. Let it sparkle. Because life, as Quinten reminds us, is already the occasion.

ALE’S BEER TOUR Intown Atlanta's beer bars with awesome eats.

ARTICLE BY DENNIS MALCOLM BYRON AKA ALE SHARPTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA BYRON/ ALLEWAYS OPEN CREATIVE

Traveling the world as a beer pioneer, journalist and influencer, I’m always on the hunt for one of my favorite dynamic duos: great beer and food. And although I’ve experienced some incredible programs across the globe, I’m proud to say my own backyard of Atlanta boasts one of the best concentrations of destinations taking both seriously. Here are four of the favorites that I regularly visit and show love to because, yes, the beer program is on point, but the food is next level as well. Now, I have rules. I avoid pork and beef, try to stay away from fried foods, and do my best to keep things healthy. Why? Besides staying in shape, I have to save some calories for the beer! There has to be a respectable tap list with seasonal specials on rotation, service must be consistently personable and the dishes recommended here need to be consistently delectable. I’m also mostly staying inside Atlanta’s I-285 Perimeter, limiting it to places I visit at least once a month, and excluding places actually brewing beer on-site. Otherwise, I’d be writing a book. That’s another installment. And with that, happy sipping… and noshing. HOBNOB NEIGHBORHOOD TAVERN — BROOKHAVEN Across its six locations throughout Georgia, HOBNOB lives up to the “neighborhood tavern” moniker with consistently personable service, a vibing atmosphere and a menu broad enough to satisfy virtually any craving. Burger lovers especially get love with plenty of options to choose from, while the long list of handhelds, Wagyu meatballs, and rotating daily specials—like the bourbon-glazed pork belly tacos I spotted while writing

this—keep things interesting. Along with the housemade Hummus Duo and seasonal salads, my go-to pick is one of my favorite combinations anywhere: the Tavern Salmon with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Simple, spiced perfectly and satisfying. The draft beer list leans toward popular selections, especially local favorites, but there’s enough diversity in styles to make sure everyone craving an ale or lager is accounted for. Overall, HOBNOB is an easy Brookhaven selection when the crew wants good food, craft beer and plenty of options. HobNobAtlanta.com BRICK STORE PUB — DOWNTOWN DECATUR Going on 30 years in 2027, Brick Store remains a globally renowned beer institution. More than 30 taps show love to independently owned breweries, with predominantly domestic craft downstairs, Belgian selections upstairs and cask-conditioned pours adding another dimension to their beer game. The made-from-scratch, elevated pub fare keeps pace, from rotating cheese and charcuterie to house-smoked wings, St. Louis-style pierogies and the playfully named “Brick-Fil-A” fried chicken sandwich. My move is pan-fried trout over the chopped or arugula salad. My favorite nap-inducing meal is the hearty chicken pot pie topped with pillowy goodness. Do it. BrickStorePub.com THE PORTER BEER BAR — LITTLE FIVE POINTS After beloved original owners Molly Gunn and Nick Rutherford moved on and The Porter took a break in 2022, thankfully this Atlanta institution returned two years

The one and only, Ale Sharpton.

Ale's signature beer, Piano Keys is a fan favorite

later under new ownership. Co-owner and executive chef E.J. Hodgkinson is one of the nicest people in the industry, knows how to curate a beer roster and chefs his tail off. Everything— and I mean everything—I’ve tried is stellar, and friends with more adventurous diets back me up on the rest. My favorites include the Little Gem & Baby Kale salad, black truffle deviled eggs, and tuna melt, while the fried fish sandwich for lunch and legendary goat cheese fritters form my cheat duo. With 60 taps, roughly 800 bottled beers and a no-joke culinary program, I strut through The Porter’s door at least twice a month. ThePorterBeerBar.com

BLESS YOUR HEART Do you remember “I’ve Got a Secret?” It was a popular TV program that premiered in 1952. Celebrity panelists tried to determine a contestant’s secret: something that was unusual, amazing, embarrassing or humorous about that person. That’s what I thought while reading “Bless Your Heart,” the first-time thriller written by Leigh Dunlap. The only difference is that all the characters in the book (except possibly one) have a secret. While I’m usually able to determine the “guilty party” in most novels, I didn’t see this ending coming. Don’t make the mistake of skipping to the last page. Read “Bless Your Heart” and imagine which actors or actresses might play the roles if the book becomes a movie. A native of Los Angeles, Leigh Dunlap studied screenwriting at the University of Southern California. She was the screenwriter for “A Cinderella Story.” Leigh also wrote a film script called “Smash” about a teenage tennis romantic comedy that formed the basis of “16-Love.” “Bless Your Heart” revolves around two Atlanta Police Department detectives working to solve the death at Chastain Park of financial adviser Anderson Tupper, a handsome, charismatic Little League coach and a member of one of Atlanta’s richest families. Additional pressure is being placed on the detectives to solve the death quickly because there is a campaign for Buckhead to secede from the city of Atlanta and take its tax revenue with it. Who might be responsible? Was it the old-money queen of Buckhead? The mysterious new writer in town? The drug-dealing trophy wife? The former Georgia football hero and Heisman Trophy winner? This book has plenty of likely suspects with motives ranging from greed to jealousy to marital discord. The question isn’t so much “Who would want Anderson dead?” The bigger question is “Who didn’t want him dead?” Wealth alone cannot buy true happiness for these “Buckhead Betty” characters, who either came from money, married into money or, in the case of Venita, shepherded their husband’s career path into wealth. An unhealthy focus on wealth can lead to harmful choices. Was that the motive, or was it something else? Are there other unlikely suspects and a different motive? Get prepared to be surprised. Leigh Dunlap currently splits her time between South Carolina and the United Kingdom. She told attendees at a recent Buckhead Heritage Speaker Series program that the twin catastrophes of the pandemic and the writer’s strike led her to write her debut novel “Bless Your Heart.” Leigh said every city of any size has the equivalent of a “Buckhead Betty.” Having lived in Buckhead with children long enough, every character in the book is, in a way, a reflection of her experience here.
