When we moved to Atlanta from Michigan 15 years ago, our daughter was a senior in high school and she was not thrilled with the idea. Either was I, to be honest. I registered her for classes here and discovered graduation requirements between the states were drastically different and that she would be required to go to night school or study online (a new option back then). After much discussion, we decided she should finish high school in Michigan and stay with her bestie’s family. That lasted a few months and we’ll be forever grateful to the family. Jane then stayed with my besties, Scott and Melissa (pictured with my grandson) and their three young kids, as a transition. Melissa is a fabulous cook and Jane enjoyed hanging out in the kitchen with her, helping with the kids now and then while considering her housing options. Scott was busy with his career and earning his Master’s at University of Michigan. Their plates were full. Still, they generously opened their home to Jane. One evening, Scott said he needed to have a conversation with her. Both Jane and Melissa remembered being apprehensive. Was it time for her to move along?
Scott asked Jane how she felt about living with them and if she’d like to stay for good. This was his idea and came out of left field. Of course, Jane said YES. She finished classes and graduated early. But, during those four months, Scott provided an unwavering solid foundation of acceptance and friendship for Jane. While she made herself at home in the guest room (the carpet was never the same), Scott welcomed her skater friends into their home and let Jane come and go as she wished. His quiet support helped her confidently navigate living away from her family. To this day, she introduces them as her “rental parents” and Scott continues to play an important role in her life as “Pepe” to her children. His grace, generosity and fierce sense of humor are an inspiration to us all.
Happy Father’s Day to Scott, Jane’s (real) dad Jim and all fathers who are relentless with their generosity, lead by example and laugh with their children and “rental” kids.
All my best,
SUE G. COLLINS, EDITOR

WORLD WAR II PILOT PAUL CRAWFORD CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY
Looking Up
ARTICLE BY MORENO AGUIARI
LOCAL LIMELIGHT LIFE + CULTURE 12
“
On his 29th mission, Mr. Crawford was shot down by ground fire while strafing a small railroad facility.
Mission accomplished! On Tuesday, March 19, World War II pilot Paul Crawford fulfilled his dream of flying in a P-51 Mustang like the one he commanded 79 years ago in China, where he flew 29 missions until he was shot down in 1945.
Now 100, Buckhead resident Crawford was delighted when the Liberty Foundation and Inspire Aviation Foundation took him up in a TF-51D on a perfect blue-sky day for flying.
For the occasion, four P-51 Mustangs landed at the Dekalb-Peachtree Airport and parked at Atlantic Aviation, the FBO that supported this unique event. Mr. Crawford lovingly touched the nose and wing of one of the Mustangs when he first walked up to it, reuniting after a 79-year separation. Major Ray Fowler, Liberty Foundation Chief Pilot, and pilot Bob Bull helped Crawford into the back seat of the TF-51 and gave him an exhilarating 30-minute ride.
The organizers envisioned the participation of only one P-51, but a quick round of calls sparked the interest of other owners who enthusiastically decided to participate in the event. Bob Bull, Steve Maher, and Rodney Allison flew their Mustangs to Atlanta bringing the total number to four:
P-51D “Old Crow” (N451MG) - Pilot Ray FowlerLiberty Foundation
P-51D “Rebel” (N3BB) - Pilot Rodney Allison
P-51 “E Pluribus Unum” (N351B) - Pilot Bob Bull
P-51 “Ain’t Misbehavin” (N51K) – Pilot Steve Maher
The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Paul graduated from High School six months later, during which time Congress passed the
law to draft 18-year-olds. “I knew that I was going to be drafted, so I went to Atlanta to talk with the Army Air Corps [sic] and the Navy about flying,” shares Mr. Crawford. “The Navy said they would accept me for flight training, but wanted me to go right then to their Great Lakes training center. The Air Corps told me they would accept me, but to go on back to college and they would notify me when to report,” says Crawford. Paul went back to Americus, entered Georgia Southwestern College, and shortly thereafter he received his draft notice to report to Fort McPherson in Atlanta on January 2, 1942.
Paul had an older brother, Tim, who had gone into the Air Corps before Pearl Harbor and was flying B-26s, a medium bomber. He ended up flying combat in the B-17 Flying Fortress out of North Africa. His older brother influenced his choice, convincing him that the Air Corps had better aircraft, “I thought the water was, as they say, too deep and too wide to swim!” says Mr. Crawford.
With about 100 hours on the P-51 and 250275 hours total, Mr. Crawford was sent off to Chengtu, China and assigned to the 311th Fighter Group, 529th Fighter Squadron protecting the B-29 bases. These B-29s were transferred to the Pacific Theater, and his squadron was transferred to Hsian, headed for combat. At the time, Mr. Crawford was estimated to have only accumulated another 60 hours of flying time.

railroad facility. After getting hit, he bailed out and was picked up by Chinese Communist guerillas. After a 200-mile-long walk, chased by the Japanese a couple of times, yet still evading capture, Mr. Crawford ended up at a compound owned by a wealthy family. A few miles from the compound was an airstrip where the OSS (U.S. Office of Strategic Services) brought downed airmen out. After the flight, Mr. Crawford talks about his experience: “When I recall my time in World War II, I always start by saying, I was not a hero! I was just there! That is not false modesty, because it is the way I have always felt. I flew the P-51 Mustang.”
Mr. Crawford who has time in P-40, P-47, A-24, and P-51C, believes that the P-51 was the best fighter
plane of its day. “There’s nothing in the world like that airplane,” Crawford says. “I loved doing the maneuvers again.” Paul Crawford was surrounded by several friends, his son-in-law Tommy, and dozens of Liberty Foundation and Inspire Aviation Foundation members eager to have their pictures taken with him, shake his hand, and thank him for his service.
After serving in WWII, Paul Crawford finished college at Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Management. That’s also where he met his wife, Jean. They had a daughter and were married for sixty-one years, until Jean passed away. Paul worked in the paper industry and for the U.S. Envelope Company until he retired in 1988. Paul currently lives in Atlanta and participates in aviation and historical WWII events.

Ronald McDonald House Charities
There’s a quiet rhythm that resonates in Bob Ward’s soul—a rhythm guided by his steady hand and warm heart. As senior vice president and principal at Colliers Atlanta, Bob’s professional success is matched only by his unwavering commitment to the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities (ARMHC), where he’s been a key player in orchestrating hope for families facing pediatric illness.
Bob’s journey with ARMHC began with a simple invitation from his mentor, Bob Allen, back in 1994. Since then, he’s been an instrumental part of the organization’s evolution
In 2018, Bob created Rockin’ The House—an annual fundraiser where Bob and his Ivy Road Band take the stage to raise funds and lift spirits. Now in its fifth year, the event has become a beloved tradition, raising more than $200,000 to date.

A Commitment to History and Community
ARTICLE BY BUCKHEAD HERITAGE
Thornton Kennedy
Thornton Kennedy is a dedicated force behind the scenes of Buckhead Heritage, working to preserve the rich tapestry of his community’s history for generations to come. As the current vice president of the board, he plays a pivotal role in identifying, preserving, restoring, and promoting Buckhead’s historic resources.
One of his notable contributions is reviving the Oral History Program alongside Judith Vanderver. Through the initiative, they recruited and trained over a dozen volunteers in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, resulting in the recording of several invaluable oral histories this year. These narratives, shared by those who lived them, encapsulate the essence of Buckhead’s past and will endure for eternity.
Thornton served on the Bagley Park Task Force, advocating for the restoration of the Bagley family name to the home of Buckhead Baseball on Pharr Road. Inspired by a moving Buckhead Heritage talk by Bagley family member Elon Osby, he penned a column in the Northside Neighbor newspaper calling for the city to return to the park’s original name, which happened last year.
A lifelong Buckhead resident, Thornton keeps the spirit of Buckhead and Atlanta history alive through his weekly columns. He embodies the spirit of preservation and community stewardship, ensuring that the legacy of Buckhead endures for generations to come.

Alec joined the Buckhead Heritage board of directors in 2023. “I volunteered to take on the cemetery improvement project because I knew I could have some impact on the project and had the resources to get it done,” he says.
Alec designed a Master Plan for the cemetery, which sits at the entrance to the park. “I have been primarily involved in the cemetery project this past year because it was a lot of work to get it approved through the City of Atlanta,” he added.
His company was able to obtain donated labor and materials to be installed during the Master Plan process. The work includes installing a wall along Pharr Road, an entrance fence, landscaping and a historic marker. A Buckhead Heritage Task Force hopes to install interpretive signage in the park in the future.
Contributors to the landscape installation include Ladies of the Lake Foundation, Leija Construction, Ironworks International, Michael Jackson Landscape Company and Irrigation Atlanta.
Alec plans to utilize his expertise in the coming year to facilitate construction work for specific projects that are on Buckhead Heritage’s drawing board.

Tricky Stewart at Sessions Atlanta
Tricky is defining the music that we hear every day, providing a soundtrack for our ever-changing world that somehow is all listening to the same tunes!
Christopher “Tricky” Stewart is an Atlanta-based multi-Grammy award-winning songwriter, producer, composer, and father whose family’s musical heritage helped to shape and guide his life from the tender age of 15 when he started his musical career. While a lot has changed for Tricky since then, he remains dedicated to his craft and is excited about the future. His artistry has touched over 50 million records sold, defining a musical genre and setting the beat for a world hungry for more hits such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” and Katy Perry’s “Hummingbird Heartbeat.”
Born into a family of choir directors, music producers, background singers, and commercial jingle writers, Tricky was somehow predestined to find his way into music. However, it wasn’t until he listened to Baby Face’s Tender Lover album
in 1989 that his musical life would change forever. “That was a catalyst mentally,” explains Tricky. “That’s when I heard something that took me from being a fan, to something that I could dedicate my life to.” For Tricky it was the level of production on the album that would be the root of his musical growth and why he became obsessed with making records.
Being authentic to the music and the process is of the utmost importance to Tricky. “I make sure that every single thing that I touch is authentic to the genre,” says Tricky.
A dedicated husband and father, Tricky is also very community-motivated. Recently, he opened Sessions Atlanta, a place where young people can have a creative playground. “Growth happens when young people can be in an environment that gives them the ability to find themselves,” he says.

HORIZONS ATLANTA AT ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (AIS) OFFERS KIDS SUPPORT.
Atlanta’s schools may be officially closed for the summer, but that doesn’t mean learning should stop during the summer months. Without the opportunity to experience enriching summer activities, many children and youth, especially those living in communities with historical educational inequities or who struggle academically during the school year, often lose up to two months of academic skills during their time away from school.
Horizons Atlanta at Atlanta International School (AIS), located in Buckhead on the campus of the Atlanta International School and one of 11 Horizons Atlanta program sites in metro Atlanta, launched in 2016 focusing on students at nearby Garden Hills Elementary School to address the opportunity gap experienced by so many Atlanta Public Schools students attending Title I schools. Horizons Atlanta’s six-week summer programs are unique because not only do they provide daily meals and snacks, teach academic subjects, and include a variety of enrichments and swim instruction, they are also 100% tuition-free and provide transportation for every child to attend the program every day of the week.
While Horizons Atlanta believes that learning shouldn’t stop in the summer, we also feel strongly that learning outside of school should not feel like school. We excel in creating a joyful summer program that students want to attend. Across all our program sites, we had close to a 90 percent daily average attendance rate last summer, which is especially rewarding considering the increased chronic absenteeism challenges schools have been facing since the pandemic.

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.
A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.
SOMETHING SWEET
This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.
SOMETHING TANGY
Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.
SOMETHING SPICY
This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.
SOMETHING LIQUID
It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.
SOMETHING TOMATO
You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.
THE SPICE COMBINATION
This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.
