Meow and woof!
It's our annual kids and pets issue. They bring us joy and bring us to tears. They keep us both buoyant and grounded. That’s our cat, Tommy. He’s not too demanding and has a really nice purr and a fluffy coat. We’ve never had dogs, but I know many of you consider your pups an important part of the family. For now and forever. I like this poem by Bettina Van Vaerenbergh. "Lessons From Dogs." Family Friend Poems, June 19, 2022. This is a selection:
Why dogs don't live that long?
It's because their souls are true
And their love is strong.
Dogs give their heart away Totally for free. They love us as we are, Unconditionally.
We people are slow learners, So we need many years
To figure out life's purpose, What we're doing here…
How to be gentle and kind, And to be rich in love, And how to live a good lifeDogs know well enough.
Have a wonderful month!

Piedmont’s nurse residency program has earned accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program. Based on ANCC evidence-based criteria, this means the program demonstrates excellence in transitioning nurses to new practice settings.
The large-scale holistic approach was a direct response and strategic solution to the early departure of new graduate nurses and the necessity of an infrastructure of support to guide nurse residents through the distinct transitional phases of professional growth.

At just 3 years old, Caroline Brewer’s life changed forever with the diagnosis of a brain tumor the size of a softball. Doctors warned she might not survive surgery—or if she did, she could lose her vision or mobility. But Caroline defied every expectation, emerging from treatment without major side effects.
Over the next eight years, she faced five cancer recurrences—four brain tumors and one spinal tumor. Eventually, her tumors spread so rapidly that doctors stopped counting. Yet Caroline never let cancer define her.
She radiated joy and strength, advocating for better treatments not just for herself, but for all kids battling cancer. She loved simple pleasures: the beach, Sephora and Ulta trips, Starbucks, Taylor Swift and chips and queso. Caroline brought light to every room, especially to her parents, Jamie and Matthew, and her older brothers, Will and Jack.
In December 2024, Caroline passed away at age 10. Just months later, her classmates honored her at what would have been her elementary school graduation. Friends read a heartfelt poem, presented her family with flowers and her signed yearbook and awarded her the Flying Eagle Award for earning all A’s. Her chosen quote captured her spirit: “Don’t be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.
A devoted Atlanta United fan, Caroline served twice as an Honorary Captain. In a recent tribute, her brothers walked onto the field in her honor. The family stood on the capo platform before the Hype Depot for a game-winning goal, receiving a golden spike engraved with Caroline’s name— forever linking her to the Atlanta United family.
“The Atlanta United organization has created so many precious memories for Caroline,” said her dad, Matthew Brewer. “Including Will and Jack in this recent tribute was deeply healing for us. Rally has walked alongside us from day one. We are forever grateful.”
“Her zest for life and her bravery inspired everyone around her,” said Rally CEO Dean Crowe, “but the battle she faced is one no child should have to endure.”

Under Canvas North Yellowstone: Where Families and Furry Friends Meet the Great Outdoors
Our first night at Under Canvas North Yellowstone, a gentle rain turned into a ferocious storm, blowing gusts of wind across the Paradise Valley right down the flue of the tiny but mighty wood-burning stove in our tent. We unzipped the heavy duty canvas door and window flaps for a few minutes, stoked the fire and crawled back under the down duvet of the king bed to listen to the drama outside. We felt completely safe and cozy in the sturdy safari-inspired tent, designed by the founders of Under Canvas, now with 13 locations, all near national parks.
Up at the expansive lobby tent, furnished with West Elm classics, hot breakfast was being served (healthy, hearty and really delicious with kids’ options) and guests were chatting about the day’s plans.
The historic lively town of Livingston, Wyoming is an easy 20 minute drive and the entrance to Yellowstone National Park is an hour south. Stop at Chico Hot Springs for a long soak and lunch and watch for elk, moose, wolves and grizzly bears. The
Paradise Valley, aptly named, offers glorious views of the Absaroka Beartooth Mountains and Gallatin Range, ranging in elevation from 4,500 to 10,921. Ask the cool kids at the Under Canvas front desk for pets and family-friendly hikes and activities nearby.
One morning (we visited in September), we woke to find the season’s first snow on the peaks of the mountains. From the deck of our tent, coffee in hand, I watched the clouds part, revealing the bright white peaks. The staff was nonchalant while guests excitedly peered through the lobby telescope searching for wildlife amongst the snowy ridges. Each Under Canvas lobby tent is stocked with books on local history, games, gear, merch and snacks. While tents have USB battery packs to power the lamps, you’ll find outlets (if you must) in the lobby. For families, book a Kids’ Tent with two twin-size beds with luxe linens and positioned directly adjacent to the standard tent where the folks sleep soundly.

The Welcome Tent is where you can plan your day, meet new friends or grab a snack.

Thoughtful interiors and wellness-forward choices go hand-in-hand – even in a kid’s bedroom. When it’s time to move on from crib to toddler bed, or from childhood bed to something more appropriate for a teen, the right sleep setup can do more than just complete their space. It can support your child’s healthy development and sleep hygiene. Not to mention it can help improve their focus and performance in school.
“CHILDREN AND TEENS ARE STILL DEVELOPING PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY, WHICH MEANS SLEEP PLAYS A PIVOTAL ROLE IN EVERYTHING FROM THEIR PHYSICAL GROWTH TO MENTAL WELL-BEING.”
Upgrading your child’s bed is a chance to combine comfort, wellness and intentional design. And at the heart of it all is the right mattress.
Children and teens are still developing physically and mentally, which means sleep plays a pivotal role in everything from their physical growth to mental well-being. Their bodies are learning how to regulate sleep, handle stress and recover from each day. A well-made organic mattress can support all of this while reducing exposure to potential allergens and questionable chemicals that are all too common in conventional mattresses.
Certified organic mattress brand Naturepedic offers handcrafted options that check every box for every age and stage. For elementary-aged kids, the 2-in-1 Organic Kids Mattress features a waterproof side for younger years and a comfy quilted side for when they’ve graduated from potty training. Teens will welcome the Verse Organic Mattress into their bedroom. It’s known for its firm support, thick organic cotton batting and an encased coil system that provides cushioning, airflow and temperature regulation.
Each mattress is made in the U.S.A. with the finest materials we can source from around the world, like GOTScertified organic cotton and steel coils we manufacture in house – no polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants or glues. Plus, they’re also GREENGUARD® Gold and MADE SAFE® certified, helping families sleep more soundly both literally and figuratively.
As your child grows into new interests and responsibilities, giving them a safer, healthier place to rest can make a meaningful difference. And for families who value wellness, sustainability and beautiful design, a mattress that checks all those boxes fits seamlessly into the BuckHaven lifestyle. Because better sleep isn’t just a bedtime goal – it’s part of how we create a better home.
