Livable Buckhead has received a $40,000 grant from Park Pride to add outdoor fitness equipment along PATH400 near Old Ivy Park, providing accessible recreational opportunities for both older adults and those living with physical disabilities in the community while enhancing the existing greenspace. While the number of parks in Buckhead has increased over the past decade, this project will be the first to include a cross-country ski machine, a two-person accessible chest press and more.

A Seat at the Table

Jennifer Means is a proud board member of the nonprofit BCM Georgia, Inc. She was invited to her coveted seat at the board table through self-reliance and self-discovery.

Founded in 1987 as Buckhead Christian Ministry by six churches on Peachtree Road, BCM Georgia helped members of its founding churches with emergency financial assistance due to unexpected life circumstances such as job loss or medical expenses. Today, BCM Georgia is a statewide nonprofit housing organization that serves 800 households annually. Their mission is fulfilled through three signature programs supporting eviction prevention, family stabilization, and financial education.

Jennifer brings a unique perspective as a BCM Georgia board member. In early 2000, she personally sought help from the nonprofit. She was a single mother working as an executive assistant when her company was forced to downsize and her position was eliminated. With a young son to raise and suddenly unemployed, a friend suggested BCM Georgia and its resources. Jennifer was soon matched with a case manager who recommended that she enroll in Budget for Life ™. This 12-month commitment gave her one-on-one coaching to instill healthy habits with budget and savings goals. As a bonus, the program includes a savings match incentive.

“Budget for Life is amazing and if you commit it pays out monetarily, but it also teaches what is needed to walk away

with a different mindset,” says Jennifer. “It gave me practical insight into something way beyond my lived experiences at that time in my life.”

Budget for Life ™, the hallmark of BCM Georgia, changed her circumstances, her career trajectory, and perhaps her fate. She also enrolled in Foundation 3 ™, a BCM Georgia program that helps households stabilize after an unforeseen life change that leaves uncertainty and instability regarding housing and employment.

“There was no judgment while in the programs and we were all from different walks of life,” explains Jennifer. “What stands out the most about my BCM experience were the cohort leaders. It was not easy, and I give a lot of credit to my case manager and my financial coach who encouraged me and did not give up on me.”

A graduate of Clark Atlanta University, Jennifer furthered her education and earned a provisional teaching certificate while a BCM Georgia participant. Later she enrolled in Mercer University and was awarded a Master’s Degree and an Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.). As a result, she enjoyed a decade-long career as a public education teacher for both Atlanta Public Schools and Dekalb County.

“It took me a minute but I realized that living life haphazardly was not going to work for all of the things I wanted to achieve for my family,” Jennifer continues. “The program, its purpose, and the discipline were key to creating awareness and recognizing the huge impact my choices were making.”

Foundation 3 ™ helps households achieve stabilization after an unexpected life change including job loss, sickness, or divorce. Participants must be employed full-time (35 hours per week) and must commit to managing their debt reduction from credit cards, loans, and car notes and to putting a savings plan in place. Managing money is about more than saving for a new bike or understanding philanthropy. For the students at Pace Academy, Knight Capital, introduces the basics of investments and they learn from a professional. Michael Merlin is a Pace Academy Parent, Knight Capital Adviser and Founder of Merlin Wealth Management where he takes complicated financial concepts and breaks them down to simple, easy-to-understand ideas. We spoke with Michael about the club.

TELL US ABOUT THE CLUB’S MISSION.

Knight Capital is an investment club at Pace Academy created so students can learn and become comfortable with the basic tenets of investing. The club meets every Thursday and usually has between 25 and 40 attendees. I am the parent advisor, and Robert Kaufman is the faculty advisor.

WHAT INVESTMENT LESSONS OR TOOLS CAN STUDENTS MOST IDENTIFY WITH?  WHAT DO THEY GET MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

The students identify with the characteristics of great businesses and that the ownership of great companies can help anyone create and maintain wealth. They get very excited to discuss businesses or industries they are most familiar with (like technology, sports and consumer-facing companies). They also get excited when they spend time researching a business, invest in it, and the company performs well.

WHAT WERE YOU MOST SURPRISED TO LEARN DURING YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THE CLUB?

The students are so engaged during our time together. These students have so much on their plates, yet they come to the club with such energy and enthusiasm. They willingly volunteer to research and present on companies or ideas that align with our monthly topic and always come prepared with thoughtful presentations. I am constantly blown away by how insightful they are, how passionately they debate different issues within our club, and how much they enjoy learning. I started bringing speakers to the last club meeting of the month, and the students consistently stay after the meeting to ask more questions of the guests. Mr. Kaufman has to remind them they have to go to class!

WHAT CLUB EVENTS OR PROJECTS ARE HAPPENING THIS MONTH?

This month, our topic is “Investing in Sports.” We are exploring sports betting, owning sports teams or leagues through publicly traded companies, or tracking stocks. Lastly, a sports executive will speak to the group and discuss why she thinks sports is a great long-term investment sector.

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 6 oz. filets of wild caught salmon

• 1 Tbsp. avocado oil

• 1 Tbsp. coconut aminos

• Zest and juice from one lemon

• 1 Tbsp. stone ground mustard

• 1 4 oz. container coconut yogurt, unsweetened

• 2 Tbsp. fresh dill, minced

• 2 Tbsp. capers, drained and minced

• Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Marinate the salmon in the lemon juice, coconut aminos, and stone ground mustard for up to two hours.

2. Drizzle salmon with avocado oil, sprinkle with salt and ground pepper, and broil on high for five to seven minutes, until cooked to desired temperature.

3. Mix coconut cream, lemon zest, dill, capers, and ground pepper together.

4. Top salmon with coconut cream, serve with roasted or sautéed veggies, brown or cauliflower rice, or fresh greens. Enjoy!
