LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello friends,
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com
Have you seen the latest fitness trends? Me neither. I tend to stick to the tried and true. Walking or biking for an hour each day, drinking plenty of water, eating a plant-based diet and getting eight hours of sleep. Usually. Well, I try. Finding a routine that fits your lifestyle is the number one consideration in charting out a wellness path. Purchasing a monthly pass for a yoga studio that’s just a bit too far away is a recipe for disaster. And, I’m speaking from experience. CrossFit was my life 10 years ago. The community, the proximity of the gym to my house and the competitive nature all led to my success. I’d never been more fit and even won a few competitions. But, a shoulder injury sidelined me (I don’t blame the workout, I blame myself for pushing things a bit too far). Now, I just try to stay strong and limber to keep up with my grandson on the playground, hike the national parks, paddle Mendocino's Big River in an outrigger canoe, sail Little Traverse Bay or ski Park City. Whatever your wellness routine is, we applaud you. And, in this issue, we introduce you to a few of our community’s wellness warriors with tips for boosting metabolism and mood alike. Enjoy this issue and take it to the gym with you! Or, relax on the sofa with a cup of tea and count your blessings. All my best,

When they learned their mom was cancer-free in the spring of 2016, the daughters wanted to give back and honor their mother. They did so by launching Strides for Survivors, a 2.7-mile charity walk around the PATH at Chastain Park, with the start and finish outside the Galloway School, the girls’ alma mater. “I am so blessed and fortunate to have family that has shown not only remarkable resilience, strength, and love throughout the adversity I faced but also have given so much of their time and energy to ensure the annual success of Strides for Survivors,” says Stephanie. “Each year the girls have organized, managed and executed all phases of the event. A PEEK INTO THE JOURNEY OF LOCAL TEACHER JAMIN GLUCK
ARTICLE BY CORTNEY WILBANKS
Jamin Gluck’s love affair with yoga began over 15 years ago in Atlanta, where he initially saw the practice as a gentler form of exercise. Little did he know, the mat would become his sanctuary for self-discovery and mental well-being. After high school, Jamin embarked on a journey to Israel, deepening his understanding of mental health and self-care. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a more intentional yoga practice, where the mat became a canvas for his personal and spiritual growth.
22
S ELF CA R E | FI TNES S
In 2020, his journey led him to Atlanta, where he settled along the vibrant BeltLine. As his career soared, he sought solace and stillness through a 10-day silent meditation retreat in Northern California, which sparked a vision of yoga and became the bridge that connects his passion for community, leadership, and public speaking. When he returned back to Atlanta, he stumbled upon the Inman Park Yonder Yoga studio while on a walk, and the rest is history. Guiding fellow yogis on their mats, Jamin’s Buckhead classes are full of energy, zest, and empowerment. Jamin believes that yoga is the cornerstone of mental health, and offers the following 5 core benefits: 1. Mindfulness: Yoga allows you to slow down, be present, and navigate life’s twists with grace. 2. Resilience: Yoga is a training ground for conquering challenges and proving your own strength. By stepping on your mat, you are training your mind to understand that you can do hard things. 3. Accountability: Yoga teaches you the importance of investing in yourself in order to show up for others. 4. Community: While yoga is a personal journey, the power lies in the collective effort. 5. Embracing the Unknown: Yoga teaches us to thrive in uncertainty, embracing each teacher and sequence, as they are all a little bit different. After a class in Buckhead, you’ll likely spot him at Detox or Arden’s Garden sipping on one of their delicious juices.

WINTER We l l n e s s SP OT L IGH T NOW more than ever, people are looking for ways to unplug and unwind from the stress of everyday life. We sat down with The NOW Massage co-founder and chief creative officer Gara Post to discuss the restorative benefits of massage therapy.
BCL: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE? Gara Post: Massage can help reduce inflammation, manage stress and anxiety, treat sports injuries and aid sleeplessness. Health professionals are recommending massages more frequently and it has become a regular part of many people’s wellness routine.
BCL: FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW TO MASSAGE, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND AS A FIRST-TIME TREATMENT? GP: Everyone can benefit from the healing power of a good massage. Taking time to reset and recharge allows you to show up better for those around you. For a beginner treatment, we suggest our signature NOW massage with our Hemp Calm Balm enhancement for next-level healing.
BCL: HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECOMMEND MASSAGES FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH? GP: Consistency is key to receiving the maximum benefits from massage. Monthly or bi-monthly massages are recommended. Everyone has different needs and will come in at a different frequency, but one thing is certain, we can all use a great massage NOW.

Behind the Scenes at Cirque du Soleil ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS
Cirque du Soleil’s 20th Big Top show brings bold new visuals and a unique aesthetic on tour. Packed with vibrant characters, inspiring music, astounding lights and projections, and never-before-seen acrobatic feats, ECHO invites audiences on a journey through a universe of color, wonder, and infinite possibilities.
HOW DO THE PERFORMERS DO IT?
Sue G. Collins: On the day of a performance, what does your day look like? Lucas Coelho Costa: I try to sleep 9 hours every night, but it’s difficult – usually, I sleep between 7 and 9 hours. I make sure I wake up with a good amount of coffee and protein. Afterwards, I go to work on my bike, riding around looking at the beautiful trees and getting a dose of nature in. As an artist coach, I spend some time training my fellow artists, which means I have to be here early. Normally I coach around 3-4 sessions of strength conditioning a day. I then make time to eat between training and staging for my number. I am a pole artist and the backup cartographer, so I do bungee straps as well. Two hours before the show, I start my make-up, which gives me time to warm up between make-up and the show. I take 15-30 minutes to warm up – doing some stretching and some exercises that activate the muscles that I am going to use. I also try to think of injury-prevention exercises. Throughout the day, since I’m a vegetarian, I pay special attention to getting protein-rich foods in my diet – lots of eggs and tofu! After the show, I take 10-15 minutes to stretch and cool down before I leave work and get back on my bike! When I get home, I try to eat another meal – since our schedule is really packed, I try to make it quick – bread and eggs usually!
SGC: HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO EXPLORE ATLANTA?
LCC: I’ve been to the BeltLine, which is a cool place to ride my bike and find good coffee. We don’t get a lot of time off, but I try to make time to explore every city we visit. I also really love the street art here, so taking walks around is always fun. There’s always something new to look at!
SGC: WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO PERFORM WITH CIRQUE?
LCC: It’s been a dream since I watched my first Cirque show – it was Corteo on DVD. My aunt gave it to me and I watched it at least 20 times. It really made me dream about being one of the acrobats on stage. I started gymnastics when I was 7, and eventually transitioned to acrobatics. At that point, I got in touch with a friend of mine who connected me to casting. I sent in tapes for high barre, one of the disciplines I’m trained in, and I got cast a few days later!
SGC: WHAT ARE A FEW SONGS YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE WORKING OUT THAT GET YOU GOING?
LCC: I really like Rufus du Sol, he’s great to work out to, or any songs that have a good beat, like EDM and techno. Sometimes I switch it up and listen to jazz rap, it gives me a chiller vibe. Cirque du Soleil is at Atlantic Station through January 21. CirqueduSoleil.com/usa/atlanta/shows

Got Mindfulness?
Have you ever accidentally said “excuse me” to a mannequin or tried to push a door open when the sign says pull? Well, you’re not alone. While being inundated by unending to-do lists, we find ourselves resorting to multitasking to cope with our omnipresent busyness. Unfortunately, stress-enhanced daily encounters often invoke mindlessness, leading to fragmented attention, restlessness, boredom, mind-wandering, impulsive decision-making, over-the-top analysis paralysis, and even tunnel vision. We seem to acknowledge that this way of living is not sustainable, and people are searching for options to change the way they relate to a demanding life. However, the growing science of wellness and well-being suggests it’s a practice and not an activity or principle. I had the good fortune of growing up in India and getting exposed to some Eastern contemplative traditions of mindfulness
and meditation as a young child. I remember sitting in a room with an oil lamp and trying to concentrate my mind on the flame as a way of building my focus. This sparked a curiosity and longing to explore various forms of meditation and eventually, for more than a decade, I have cultivated my own meditation practice. In 2020, as the pandemic was raging all around the globe, this quest got me to enroll in the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP) led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. Mindfulness refers to the practice of maintaining a momentby-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment in a non-judgmental way so that we can down-regulate disruptive emotions and free up our brains to think big in an enlightened self-interest way (rather than selfishly). The founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Jon Kabat-Zinn says, “Mindfulness is a healing and

transformative meditation practice—a way of living our lives as if they really matter by fully inhabiting our moments as best we can throughout the day.” Contemplative neuroscience shows that when we learn to treat the mind and body as a single unit, we gain enormous control over our health and interpersonal connectivity. Unlike weightlifting and healthy eating that benefits the person who exercises, mindfulness meditation practices benefit not just the doer, but also those in their orbit. My hope has been to share the joy and wisdom behind the innumerable benefits of mindfulness meditation with everyone, so in January 2023, as a way of celebrating my graduation from this MMTCP program, I launched The Buckhead Mindfulness Meditation Group as a way to build mindfulness community around the Chastain/Buckhead area in Atlanta. During “Mindful Mondays,” a free bi-monthly group sit, we explore various meditation practices, including sitting, walking, and even eating, with the goal of:
• Overcoming negative inner chatter and self-limiting beliefs • Honoring uncertainty in our own lives with awareness and kindness • Expanding our “Circle of Affection” through gratitude and generosity From my personal experience, I can say the practice of mindfulness has accentuated my creativity, reduced my stress, pain, and mindlessness, and has helped me move towards greater physical health and inner well-being. Here’s to living in the words of Thich Nhat Hanh, “Life can only be found in the present moment!” Sucheta Kamath, an ed-tech entrepreneur, is a founder/CEO of ExQ®, founder of Buckhead Mindfulness Group and professor of practice at the Amrita University in India. Sucheta serves on many boards including the Leadership Atlanta, the ASHFoundation, the National Multi-Faith Initiative to End Mass Incarceration (EMI) and the Medical Advisory Board of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation and she is involved in many racial equity, justice and interfaith projects, as well as community programing for the individuals experiencing addiction, post incarceral displacement.

Living Room Learning Lecture Series Atlanta HIstory Center | 2:00 PM The American Population in the 1980s with lecturer Patrick Allitt. The American population grew by ten percent in the 1980s, from 226 million to 249 million. The immigration reform act of 1965 permitted people from every part of the world to apply. Some observers feared the population was too big. Others wanted it to be even bigger. History repeats itself. AtlantaHistoryCenter.com JANUARY 3 0 TH
