LIFESTYLE LETTER
Hello friends,
February 2023 PUBLISHER
Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com
When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! I'm thrilled to share a special collection of images from one of our very favorite staff photographers, Jolie Loren. She has shot covers for us and managed tricky photo shoots for our features. She's a consummate professional but more than that, a joyful and positive person to work with. Enjoy the lovely images on page 12. We are chock full of stories about good people doing good for the community and encourage you to take note, find your gifts and share them with enthusiasm.

THROUGH JOLIE'S LENS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOLIE LOREN
Jolie Loren Rizzi is an Atlanta-based photographer specializing in "capturing the moments" at every charity, wedding, portrait, music, corporate, or commercial event in Atlanta and beyond. Jolie truly wants her pictures to make people feel. "It is my genuine intention for you to want to look at a picture for much longer than the second it took when it actually happened, '' says Jolie. "There is honor in the truth of that moment.” Jolie's client list reads like a who's who of Atlanta including notable nonprofits such as Anti-Defamation League and Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance as well as Zac Brown Band, John Driskell Hopkins, and Collective Soul. For the last three years Jolie has been a lead photojournalist for City Lifestyle. Her images have graced the covers of multiple publications and have been featured in countless articles.

“FIND YOUR LIGHT” Caroline Jones headlining her show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. I love how the camera captured the light behind her and on her face. Soon after this image was taken, Zac made her a permanent member of the Zac Brown Band.

The Feel-Good Facial To you, from you!
While a facial usually includes cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and pure relaxation, don’t rule out science. When the aesthetician welcomed me and walked me through my upcoming treatment, I must admit I didn’t understand everything she said! I trusted her, though, and the experience was transformative and delightful. The Biologique Recherche Remodeling Face© (RMF) is an advanced bioelectric treatment that combines the power of three currents (galvanic, microcurrent, and high frequency) for immediate and long-lasting results. This triple-lift red carpet treatment helps to remodel the face, and neck and decollete with real
action on texture and volume, less marked wrinkles, and a more clearly defined facial contour. These results are achieved with state-of-the-art technology by using bio-electrotherapy.
THE RESULTS: • RMF helps reduce circles around the eyes and tones the eyelids, making eyes look wider and cheekbones higher. • RMF improves the quality of the epidermis and improves muscle tone. The lifting effect is astonishing, immediate, and lasting. • RMF revitalizes the epidermis visibly from the very first session. The

results are lasting and cumulative. When combined with a healthy lifestyle and the application of specific products at home, the results last even longer. • RMF delays the need for plastic surgery. • RMF prepares skin tissue for medical-surgical aesthetic procedures and enhances the quality of post-operative results. • RMF improves the penetration of water-soluble active ingredients. The Shaken, Not Stirred Gala Returns GEORGIA OVARIAN CANCER ALLIANCE CELEBRATES LIVE AND IN PERSON IN 2023! ARTICLE BY SEAN O'KEEFE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOLIE LOREN PHOTOGRAPHY
The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance turns 25! The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. From its humble beginnings around a dining room table to a nationally recognized women’s organization, GOCA continues its education and advocacy work through its Bag of Hope Program, Survivors Teaching Students, and the many education and awareness programs and events held annually across Georgia. The Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, now in its 13th year, promises to gather the community of survivors, family, supporters, and caregivers together for an uplifting evening of remembrance, fellowship, and fundraising.

“I can't even get my kids together," says Dale, "but my kids, their spouses, all of my grandkids and 10 ladies from work
Threatened by the pandemic, GOCA’s medically fragile community was kept from celebrating its annual fundraising gala, but this year it is going to be different. “As we celebrate GOCA’s 25th Anniversary, we are committed to the founding members’ vision and mission of the importance of ovarian cancer education, awareness, and early detection,” says executive director Doug Barron. “After three years of cancellations, the anticipation and positive energy of being able to finally gather in person for the GOCA 2023 Shaken, Not Stirred Gala is very exciting.” GOCA’s approach to virtual storytelling evolved during the pandemic and they created many memorable biographies, music videos, heartfelt stories of survival, and memorials. These stories and so much more can be viewed on the video page of their newly redesigned website, GAOvarianCancer.org. Whether supporting the community at the Shaken, Not Stirred Gala, walking with a fundraising team at Teal Trot, or strutting down the runway at Teal to Heal, GOCA’s continued presence in our community and across Georgia strengthens its mission and offers much-needed support to women at every phase of their diagnosis and treatment.

Kimberly Claar, Dale R. Earnhart, Kim Lauerman, and Afsaneh (Sam) Threeths. Survivors, Teal Warriors, and GOCA's Women of Power for 2023
Dale Earnhart's Story “It was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 2020 when I received my diagnosis at the emergency room,” says Dale. “It is rather cliché, but you never expect those words to be directed to you.” Dale’s two sisters took care of her through her cancer journey and she was surrounded by a great network of friends at her work as well as prayer groups. “One prayer group even had people in France and England praying for me. I was able to see the blessings that God had provided for me,” says Dale. It was her dear friend and co-worker at Georgia Primary Bank, Vicky, who introduced Dale to GOCA and the Teal Trot. “My family and co-workers formed ‘The Earnhart Pit Crew,’” says Dale. At first Dale dreaded the idea, but she admits that the Teal Trot ended up being quite the blessing. The bank even sponsored the event. Dale’s lasting advice to others is “not to shut down, share with everyone and feel blessed for all the support that you will receive.” The most important part of Dale’s message to others is “to be a gracious receiver of the things that people want to do to help you out.”
Kimberly Claar, survivor and GOCA advocate
Kimberly Claar's Story Kimberly was diagnosed in July of 2016 and learned about GOCA through one of her chemo nurses. “Let us take care of your cancer,” the nurse said, “and go and live your life.” That was all the advice that Kimberly needed. “I felt hopeful and empowered, I was very well educated by my doctor,” says Kimberly. “I created a Facebook group where I posted all the details about the good, the bad, and the ugly.” Kimberly was empowered to share and share she did. “I was so taken back watching other women go through chemo with no one with them, I grabbed my IV pole and started walking around the infusion center to talk with them. I vowed to make a difference.” Kimberly further engages with others as a proud participant in Survivors Teaching Students. “Once I started telling my story to groups, medical students, and anyone who would listen, I never looked back!” Kimberly’s first Teal Trot was in 2016. She has walked the runway at Teal to Heal and attended her first Shaken, not Stirred Gala in 2017. “I was so touched to know there was such support - that people were passionate about

There is such a sisterhood with all the Teal Sisters. We have all been there and we all know what it is like to hear those words, “You have ovarian cancer.” As GOCA continues to grow and evolve, they are always looking for new heroes. There are all kinds of ways to become involved. You can sign up for any event committee, help with fundraising, or even volunteer to help at any of the incredible outreach events that GOCA hosts annually. HATCH YOUR MATCH
ARTICLE BY LAUREN PHILIPSON
Hatched, the dating app redefining the swipe by making it less “show me” and more “know me,” is changing the digital dating game by diving deeper into values, attitudes, personality and interests to help users discover more meaningful matches. The brainchild of two emerging Buckhead entrepreneurs, co-founders Mitchell Alterman and Sam Lukens, and backed by a notable group of angel investors, Hatched user profiles are depicted by an egg still covered by its shell – encouraging users to start meeting others through commonalities and getting to know one another for their personalities. Each time a similarity strikes, a piece of the shell cracks off – ultimately unveiling the photo of, at that point, a person you’ve connected with over interests and character traits, as opposed to physical attraction and typical “type” tendencies. Whether swiping, scrolling or clicking through, the user flow and criteria for matchmaking in most dating apps consists of surface-level bio details and a slideshow of images. By making users earn the right to learn and see more about their potential match, Hatched creates a level playing field. Buckhead locals, co-founders Alterman and Lukens, developed the idea of Hatched at Bartaco on Roswell Road last year. They chose Buckhead as their hub because of its centralized location, awesome social, shopping and restaurant scenes, communities of young, interesting people and top-tier school systems

for when they start families. Buckhead is their business home, too. Though they currently work from their respective homes, they are on the hunt for full-time office space in the neighborhood, among some of their favorite local spots like Alma Cocina, Three Dollar Café, Kaleidoscope and Yebo. “Dating app culture is almost completely dictated by appearance,” says Alterman, CEO & cofounder. “We’re creating a new way for users to present themselves and to view others. We’re hoping that Hatched users will continue to learn about themselves while hatching their match. As we like to say at Hatched, get to know somebody before you get to no them!” Lukens, COO & cofounder, shares, “User interests are changing. People are searching for something more substantive and real. The dating app industry is experiencing rapid growth, yet current offerings are still determined to maintain the status quo. Hatched will relieve users of swiping fatigue and instant picture-based rejection through a new, innovative approach that should make virtual matchmaking more meaningful and effective.” After download, users will be asked to sign up and pick an egg-shaped icon from a library of options that represents one of their hobbies or interests (i.e. sports egg, shopping egg, etc.). The user will then be matched with other eggs. Those eggs represent potential matches whose photo and bio details will be withheld. Only by answering personality, attitude, core value and lifestyle (PAVL) multiple choice questions that are the same as their match, do users have the opportunity to see parts of their match’s photo and learn more about them. Questions are pulled at random from a database that has been generated by a team of licensed clinical therapists. This new approach will ensure that users’ chat conversations are available and full details and photos are shown only once the match pair has a general understanding of one another. By adding in this element of surprise, it enhances the user experience, making it stimulating and exciting, while ensuring that Hatched helps create a more meaningful - and less superficial - match for each user. The app will be available across Atlanta only. Learn more at HatchYourMatch.com and follow along at @hatcheddating.

Paint Love brings extraordinary arts programming that empowers youth and strengthens communities. Since 2014, they have served more than 18,000 young people, working with more than 100 schools and youth-serving nonprofit partners in the Metro-Atlanta area, hundreds of artists of all kinds, and thousands of volunteers. Art is the vehicle, but the soul of their work is showing young people that their voice matters, their ideas are important, and their actions make a difference in changing the world. Paint Love envisions a world where all youth have access to creative opportunities and resources that allow them to imagine and create a future not limited by adverse experiences. “I give my time to Paint Love because art and the act of creating art have always been my guide through hard or traumatic times in my life. I searched for a long time for an organization to volunteer with that provides art programs with the same purpose for children living in poverty or experiencing trauma in their own lives,” says Amy Clarke, Brookhaven resident, Program Director at the CF Foundation and Vice-chair of Paint Love’s Board of Directors. “Paint Love’s programs bring extraordinary, trauma-informed arts projects and trained staff and volunteers to youth service providers and schools. I’m very lucky and thankful to be able to serve as a board member of Paint Love, which impacts over 5,000 children and youth per year. Participants don’t have to be artists to feel that positive impact. It truly is the act of creating in safe spaces with highly trained facilitators that brings about healing in many forms.”

1.5oz Distillery of Modern Art Vodka 1.5oz LS Cream Liqueur .75oz Orange Curaçao .5oz Heavy Whipping Cream 1 Bar French Broad Cranberry Orange White Chocolate
ON VIEW THROUGH JUNE 30, 2023
DIRECTIONS: 1. Proper Equipment and Base Spirit: For this recipe, having a good set of shaking tins, strainers, and glassware is key. Using a Boston shaker tin (we love the Koriko weighted tins), add 1.5oz of Chamblee’s Distillery of Modern Art vodka. This new distillery, founded by Seth Watson, is a unique space that includes an art museum, event space, and cocktail lounge. 2. Balance and Proportions: The cumulative gathering of ingredients – both large and small – can make or break the overall high, middle, and low notes of a cocktail. We’ve chosen to use 1.5oz LS Cream Liqueur, a black-owned and operated company, as our cream base for the Modern Love recipe. The Haitian “Krema” recipes, passed down from generation to generation, offer a rounded mouthfeel and light tropical flavor that is unmatched on the market and the palate. 3. It’s All About the Shake: Incorporating cream of any kind into a recipe requires a long and intensive shake. After adding the .75oz Orange Curaçao and .5oz heavy cream, fill the tin with ice, cover with a larger tin and make sure there is a tight seal before giving it a good 30-second shake to aerate the drink and create a delightful foam on top. 4. Glassware: We’ve chosen a classic Nick and Nora glass to keep your drink looking sleek and frothy. Once you’ve unsealed your tin and set the strainer on top, gently pour into the glass, letting the cream head form before grating a small amount of the French Broad Cranberry Orange White Chocolate as a garnish to bring a nice tart finish to this otherwise smooth drink.
