As the holidays are fast approaching, we are gearing up for our holiday tradition of puzzling. We begin buying new puzzles that catch our eye during the year and save them up for the two weeks when my daughter, now 23, and I will clear the kitchen table and break out several new 1000-piece puzzles, usually knocking out between four and five been the holidays and New Years. Our puzzle nights consist of turning up the tunes, mostly 80s, with a good bottle of wine into the wee hours, while desperately searching for that “one” piece. Anyone who enters the house is dragged into helping out and enticed with some wine and our fabulous music, of course! My son, now 26, never understood how we could get so much enjoyment from doing the puzzles, but always joined us for a little while each year and found a few pieces while crabbing about it every time. Each year we crank through between four to six puzzles and then donate them to the senior living community where my dad used to live. Then begins the process of looking for new puzzles that look appealing to us during the year to save and start our fun tradition again the next year. As the holiday season descends upon the State of Georgia, there's a longstanding tradition that brings the many flavors of our state to the forefront of our holiday tables. "Georgia Grown" is not just a marketing catchphrase, it's a celebration of the state's rich agricultural heritage and our combined commitment to supporting local businesses. Georgia Grown aims to promote and highlight the agricultural and food products produced within the State of Georgia, emphasizing the importance of supporting local farmers and businesses, especially during the holiday season. Governor Brian Kemp and first lady Marty Kemp are big supporters of Georgia Grown. “One thing that we have prioritized since moving into the People’s House is making it not just a portrait of Georgia, but also a tool to help promote causes such as our Georgia Grown agriculture," says the first lady. “We are proud that the entire mansion kitchen is stocked with Georgia Grown products.”

Georgia Grown is taking center stage on holiday tables across the state with hundreds of products available for home entertaining. Chef Holly Chute and Chef Olivia Rader, the culinary team at Georgia Grown, and Chef James Ellington at the mansion recently created the ultimate holiday table for us, featuring the best that Georgia has to offer. The menu started with a Sweet Grass Dairy cheese board followed by mini biscuits with pimento cheese and duck prosciutto, a Bramlett Trout Farm smoked trout spread, and Georgia sourdough crackers. With a tip of the hat to the new year, our salad was made with collard greens and black-eyed peas. A delicious Riverview Farm crown roast of pork was served with carrot soufflé, green bean bundles wrapped with bacon and creamy grits with a ragú made from Ellijay mushrooms. Happy Holidays from the Ernsts After a busy year managing Brookhaven’s growth, Mayor John Ernst paused to fill us in on how he and his family will be celebrating the holidays this year. He and his wife Monica and their two boys, Jack and Evan, traveled to Columbia, Tennessee for Thanksgiving, where they shared turkey with Monica’s family in a unique tradition. “My mother-in-law is from Maryland and she and my father-in-law are fans of blue crabs. Our Thanksgiving table is covered with newspaper and the whole family cracks crabs. We do a turkey charcuterie with the meats and cheeses arranged in the shape of a turkey,” says John. The Ernsts spend Christmas Eve dinner with family and friends where the main dish is a prime rib, either slow-roasted all day long or in the smoker. Appetizers include a garlic cheese bread Christmas tree that the whole family enjoys. Christmas Day dinner is spent with John’s parents, because family is everything.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance.
