Hello!
I am thrilled to be part of bringing the September fashion issue to life. It has been an absolute joy to work with the BuckHaven City Lifestyle team, and our fearless leader, editor Sue Collins to shine a light on talented Atlantans who are bringing the glam to our city in a big way. Roche Bobois hosted us in their gorgeous showroom for our cover shoot and we couldn't be more excited about the results. With photog rapher Michele Sheetz behind the lens, we are spoilt for choice of images for our cover feature. Forward the Agency models Kyra Warnock and Sarah Butler turned it out in accessories and apparel from B.M. Franklin, E.Shatia Atelier, Abbey Glass and Sac de Lux; and we were joined by the designers themselves: Brandon Franklin and E'Naiyah Frazier (both fea tured in this issue). We also checked in with fine jewelry curator Don Purcell about his career and running his own store in the Buckhead Village District. Fall is my favorite time of year for fashion. Sweaters, boots, jeans and hats are my go-to uniform. This month, we invite you to explore fashion in our own back yard and maybe splurge on a little something for your wardrobe.

FREEDOM IN LETTING GO. Women’s designer and recent SCAD graduate E’Naiyah S. Frazier discovered her love for denim when she tried on her first pair of Billie jeans while working at J. Crew. It’s not the easiest material to work with, but E’Naiyah was passionate and determined not only to elevate the utilitarian fabric, but also to focus on sustainability in her process. Inspired by J. Crew’s support of the Blue Jeans Go Green denim recycling program, she chose to work with recycled and donated denim to create her thesis collection Imperfect 001.

Peter’s words inspired E’Naiyah to embrace imperfections. She relates to the Japanese art of kinsugi, a technique used to repair broken ceramics with gold, and wabi-sabi, a philosophy of finding beauty in what is natural, flaws and all. Designer E'Naiyah Frazier photo: Michele Sheetz Photography

E’Naiyah shares that Peter Jensen’s advice was to “let it go and be free”. It took a minute for that guidance to become clear, but when it did, it resonated deeply. “His creative advice pushed me beyond what I thought I knew. When I took his advice to let it go, I found the beauty in my work and creativity. When I took his advice to be free, I released myself from being the biggest critic of my work.”
Some of her professors weren’t so sure about her choice of materials. E’Naiyah says, “I originally wanted to develop a sustainable collection using materials such as hemp, linen and organic cottons with traditional silhouettes, but my pro fessor in that particular class thought it wasn’t exciting or pushing me enough creatively. A friend of mine told the professor that I had previously done a sustainable denim project after learning about Blue Jean Go Green. And after they saw that project, they encouraged me to pursueRenowned Danishdenim.” designer and Associate Chair, School of Fashion at SCAD, Peter Jensen recognized E’Naiyah’s talent and encouraged her to continue with her chosen path. He says, “E’Naiyah was in the first class I ever taught at SCAD. She was fairly new to fashion, but she understood, as any good student does, what it means to love and have a passion for one’s collection and work, and how to bring it forward within the frame work of her ideas. E’Naiyah created a strong, personal, and forward-thinking senior col lection showing her depth as a designer. We are so proud of E’Naiyah’s accomplishments, she will be a bright star in the fashion sky!”

Propelled by the innovation of con ceptual designers like Guo Pei and Junya Wantanbe, E’Naiyah’s treatment of denim in her work is completely unique and nearly unrepeatable. Hand dyeing, distressing, draping, and sculpting as she creates makes each piece delightfully bespoke.
E’Naiyah credits her grandmother Carolyn for her creative abilities and her mother Teshia, for allowing her to express her creative freedom in every aspect of life.
ESFrazier21.wixsite.com
“All the dyeing and manipulation is done by me on my small patio. It’s all really trial and error. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t,” she admits. “But even if it doesn’t, I find a way to incorporate it.” A 2022 SCAD graduate, E’Naiyah has already racked up an impressive list of awards and accomplishments. She is a 2021 CFDA Fashion Future Graduate and Fashion Forward winner, a 2021 National Black Arts Festival winner and was recently featured in Vogue Italia for her thesis collection. She creates with size inclusivity and sustainability as core to her practice and from that, she designs incredible, wear able works of art.

OUR TOWN | LIFE + CULTURE Custom Hats and Community with B.M. Franklin & Co. ARTICLE BY ROB LANTERMAN One of Buckhead Village District's newest additions is here to put a hat on your head and inspire the community. 22

While this kind of storefront is difficult to obtain in New York, the small space wasn’t conducive to Brandon’s business philosophy of creating an experi ence for every customer. “If you have a great experi ence and a great story to tell - that people can come in and tangibly hear, touch, feel, smell - they’re going to keep coming back,” he predicts. “Experience is the new retail currency.”
Visit B.M. Franklin & Co. online at BMFranklinCo.com , or visit in person at 256 Buckhead Ave NE Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Eventually, Brandon stumbled upon Atlanta and hasn’t looked back since. “We got invited to come to Atlanta for a pop-up shop. Once I got down here, I just fell in love.”
Built on enthusiasm for each individualized item, B.M. Franklin can thrive in a bigger space and offer more of an individualized experience for customers here. One way the business fosters this is through The Art of Hat Making Experience, a bi-weekly event where visitors can learn about how the hats are constructed and watch and help as a custom hat is made. “I encourage people to iron and steam - to really get involved in the process,” Brandon says of the experience. But it’s more than just business that brought him here. Brandon believes in the Buckhead business com munity and is passionate about strengthening it. Like many of his neighbors at Buckhead Village, he thinks there’s great potential to form lasting relationships and partnerships.
“I hope for more togetherness, synergy, collabora tions, and intentional meetings,” he says. “[Businesses should] break off and have a little bit of fun! Let’s come together and figure out how to throw our own food and wine festival. Be a part of a street food com petition even if you [do] fine dining.” This, Brandon believes, will encourage people to stick around for the weekends and participate in the community. “You have to rely on people going out and talking about this.”
“As we measure [a client’s] head, we’re analyzing their face, their features - trying to get an idea of what’s going to work best for them,” Franklin explains. “We try to master each person’s specific shape to com plement their features, their lifestyle.” This attention to detail comes from years of retail and hat-making experience. Brandon started B.M. Franklin in 2014 after first working at Ralph Lauren and then honing his craft at New York’s renowned Worth & Worth.
When Brandon decided to branch out on his own, B.M. Franklin operated out of several homes, apart ments, and pop-up shops, until finally landing a store front at 368 Broadway in Tribeca. “Great location, but 350 square feet - we didn’t even have a proper window in there,” he laughs.
Shopping should offer an experience and a hat should tell your Brandonstory. Franklin, the owner of B.M. Franklin & Co., has opened up in Buckhead Village, specializ ing in high-end custom hats. Whether you want a western-style hat, casual cap, or even a baby bucket, Franklin intends to help you tell your story yourself through his highly-demanded headwear.

Don Purcell is a luxury fashion veteran, previously of Jeffrey New York. When Jeffrey shut down during the pandemic, Don took his future into his own hands. He now runs his own jewelry gallery in the Buckhead Village District. Shoppers will notice a colorful and creative selection of jewelry, such as the Judith Lieber Couture Beehive and Brick Phone, the Monies Collection, and more. The store also carries numerous works by Louisiana artist Ashley Longshore.

YOUR STORE CARRIES ART BY ASHLEY LONGSHORE AS WELL. I’ve known Ashley for almost 20 years. I have a non-profit called Pansy Patrol, and she was always very supportive of that. She always said, “if you did anything on your own, you know that I would support you.” I called her and said, “Okay girl, I’m doing something on my own. Do you want to sup port me?” (laughs) The aesthetic in my store is this clean gallery look, but I like color. So I thought that she’d fit well. We’ve sold a bit of [her] art out of here; a win-win for everyone. >

I was an art major in college, so I was always cre ative. After I graduated, I tried to make money being an artist, but that was difficult. I stumbled into working for Jeffrey [Kalinsky - founder of Jeffrey New York]’s dad, who owned a shoe store in Charleston, South Carolina, and sold high-end ladies’ shoes. The art background prepared me for the creative spirit it takes to work in a store like the one I own.
Don chatted with us about his career, running his own store, and the Buckhead Village District.

I had solid relationships with about half of the designers I [carry] from my years at Jeffrey. I found the other half online during the pandemic, looking at other stores I admire.
It was scary but rewarding. When I lost my job at Jeffrey, I figured, “if I’m going to try this, now’s the time to do it. So far, we’ve done pretty well!”
HOW WAS THE TRANSITION FROM JEFFREY NEW YORK TO RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
EVERYTHING YOU CARRY IS SO CREATIVE AND UNIQUE. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHOM TO WORK WITH?

THAT SOUNDS AMAZING. WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR BUCKHEAD VILLAGE DISTRICT?
I would like to see the empty spaces filled, although they are filling them. I’d like to see more shopping districts taking chances on peo ple who have a good head on their shoulders and a good business idea.

The [jewelry] case nearest to me here [car ries] a designer named Eli Halili. He is an Israeli jewelry designer who finds these unbelievably old coins, shapes gold around them, puts them on a chain, and lets the coin do the talking. They’re amazing. Then I have Mio Harutaka from Japan. She does these whimsical diamond/ sapphire pieces. Like her favorite pet as a child was a bunny, so I have a bunny ring. Her favorite flower’s a daisy, so I have this very classy daisy ring. When you touch it, the pedals move.
