LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello friends,

August 2022 PUBLISHER

Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com SENIOR ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE

Karyn Slovin | karyn.slovin@citylifestyle.com

Growing up, pets came into our household by default. Neighbors moved and we adopted Taja, an Australian Sheepdog who nipped at my jacket every winter as we zoomed down the hill on a toboggan. A cat showed up on our front porch and with indifference, my mother named her Calico. Later, my brother returned from Colorado after a break-up and brought a giant dog, Mercy part Malamute, Newfoundland and Bouvier. We loved them all! Now, I have two cats, Johnny and Tommy (camera shy, pictured), who are as annoying as they are lovely. But, aren't we all? Enjoy this issue honoring pets and kids. That’s my cat Tommy (Professor Thomas Pembercorn) who spends more time on my bed than I do! Good luck to all the students and teachers heading back into the classroom this month. Be kind to one another and, as my mother would tell me, "be a good helper." All my best,

Every adult remembers this childhood favorite: the hard plastic magnetic letters that adorned the door of the refrigerator. You would spell all kinds of words (sometimes naughty ones) or leave little messages for your parents or siblings. They were a fun way of learning and communicating with others. Now, the Type Set Co., a Buckhead-based brand has given that childhood classic a facelift. After watching her young son and their adult friends get so much use and joy out of the classic toy, Ashley Jankowski knew she could reimagine this favorite kitchen accompaniment for the modern home. She thought it would be fun to change out the colors as seasons changed and wanted to make the design a little more sophisticated so that it tied in with her home decor. So, along with her husband Paul, Ashley launched into research

and development. They used a 3D printer to help them determine the best size and scale for letters and built their own prototype boards. Soon after, The Type Set Co. was born. The duo thoughtfully designed and crafted a new kind of magnetic letter with accompanying magnetic boards. Their products are made for the style-conscious adult while still being a colorful and engaging toy for children. Their elevated magnetic letters and boards can be used for everything from quotes and sentiments to reminders and lists. Five and a half years later, this husband and wife team continues to bring a wide variety of modern magnetic letters for adults and children to homes everywhere! Never Settle: A Campaign for Kids Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta recently launched the public phase of Never Settle: A Campaign for Kids, the largest fundraising campaign in the history of Children’s. The campaign will span five years and includes both capital and programmatic support. The total cost of this campus project is $3.4 billion to provide top-notch healthcare and improve access for generations of children. Children’s is investing $2.4 billion into the campaign and is aiming to raise $1 billion to transform pediatric healthcare for the next 100 years. “As the largest and only freestanding pediatric healthcare system in Georgia, we know the opening of Arthur M. Blank

Hospital will enable more patients to receive unique specialized care at Children’s,” said Donna Hyland, CEO of Children’s. The demand for pediatric specialty care is greater than ever before and the number of patients Children’s treats each year continues to grow. In 2021, Children’s managed more than one million patient visits and treated more than 414,000 unique patients from all 159 counties in Georgia. As such, Children’s is working at every level to expand reach, improve the patient family experience, support research efforts and transform pediatric healthcare through four main initiatives:

• Creating a hospital campus made just for our kids. Children’s is committed to providing children and teens the innovative specialty care they deserve. Seventy-five percent of Arthur M. Blank Hospital patient rooms have garden views, which can help decrease pain, reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Arthur M. Blank Hospital will focus on cardiac, hematology/oncology and transplant services. • Expanding our resources. Arthur M. Blank Hospital, on the North Druid Hills Campus, will be 19 stories tall with more than 1.5 million square feet of hospital space and 446 beds. Additionally, Children’s will continue its commitment to building a pediatric behavioral and mental health system of care that improves outcomes, reduces stigma and enhances access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment. • Continuing our commitment to research and innovation. The North Druid Hills Campus and Arthur M. Blank Hospital will help accelerate our research efforts by creating dedicated space for breakthroughs. This includes a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) lab to advance innovative cellular therapies, the Marcus Center for Pediatric Cellular Therapy lab dedicated to innovative care and 3D printing labs to design lifesaving treatment options. • Training the next generation of doctors and providers. Strongly aligned with Emory University School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Georgia Institute of Technology, Children’s is uniquely positioned to serve as a national and global leader in taking on pediatric care’s greatest challenges. Arthur M. Blank Hospital will provide two times more conference and simulation space to help more than 400 fellows and residents contribute to groundbreaking work. CHOA.org

The Making of Kidplomacy

The author and her book

30

K I D S C OR N E R | ED U CATION

ARTICLE BY KATIE MAIER

Last spring, as my senior year of high school was winding down, I embarked on one last adventure: a project I call Kidplomacy. At my high school, The Lovett School, seniors have the opportunity to finish some or all of their classes early to spend the month of April doing a self-designed, self-led senior project. I love writing, making art, and studying diplomacy, so I brainstormed ideas for a project that could combine these interests. I ultimately came up with Kidplomacy, a children’s book that I would write, illustrate, and publish to introduce young readers (a.k.a. Kidplomats) to the concept of diplomacy. With this plan in mind, I got to work on my book, starting with the story itself. Because diplomacy is such a broad and complex subject, I wanted to convey it through thematic characters who could connect with my audience. I discovered Peter Past and Frankie Future, two friends who represent the importance of learning from the past and envisioning a better future, and work together with Kidplomats to make positive change in the world. Once I had this basic narrative figured out, I was able to jot down the rhyming story in a couple hours, and I instantly began visualizing the pictures I would make to accompany it. I created the book’s 28 illustrations through the process of intaglio printmaking, specifically drypoint printmaking, which involves etching a plastic plate with a pencil-like carving tool, covering the plate with ink, rubbing off much of the surface of the plate, laying it on damp paper, and rolling it through a printing press. Because this type of printmaking lends itself to monotone images, I painted many of the illustrations with watercolor to add more color. I then scanned the illustrations, created a digital manuscript, and self-published my book online. When I received my first copies of Kidplomacy in the mail a few days later, what I had accomplished finally hit me—I made a “real” book! It’s so fulfilling for me to see the book I created listed on Amazon alongside the children’s books I grew up reading (even if mine isn’t quite a bestseller yet!). I hope that my book helps the next generation of Kidplomats realize the power they have to make the world a better place. I also plan to apply the lesson of Kidplomacy to my own life as I attend Williams College this fall and pursue a career in international diplomacy. Kidplomacy.com

This globally established luxury lifestyle brand, founded by Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper, will blend hotel and restaurant into one unique experience, including 152 rooms, a striking rooftop pool, a spa and corporate conference space. Also debuting early fall, Life Time at Phipps Plaza will feature healthy living and entertainment in its signature athletic club to create a unique wellness experience. The luxurious, four-level, 90,000 square-foot resort-like athletic club will showcase the ultimate in-studio yoga and cycle classes; small group and personal training; a full-service LifeSpa; a fast-casual LifeCafe; a Life Time Kids Academy; and a lavish rooftop pool, beach club and bistro. Life Time Work, located on the second level of Life Time, will occupy 25,000 sq. feet of elegantly designed private office and open-plan workspaces that promote a healthy lifestyle at work, resulting in members being more productive, engaged and fulfilled.

Recess Rules NEW PLAYGROUND AT TRINITY OFFERS SPACE AND INSPIRATION

ARTICLE BY NICOLE FASH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRINITY SCHOOL

Students at Trinity head back to school this month with an eye towards recess. The school celebrated the grand opening of its Early Childhood Outdoor Learning Center a few months ago. It features independent and collaborative gathering spaces, unique climbing elements, a trike path, a musical amphitheater, a dino dig, and areas that inspire art and science discovery. The Center is one of the first completed projects made possible by Inspire Excellence, Trinity’s $14.5 million campaign that will grow the school’s endowment and fund new facilities and significant renovations to several spaces. From all of us at BuckHaven City Lifestyle, best wishes to all the students and teachers returning to school this month! TrinityAtl.org
