Happy Independence Day! The first celebrity I rubbed shoulders with was Barbara Harrison. I was in elementary school. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of shaking hands with John Travolta, Jane Fonda, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ray Liotta (RIP, just last month), Tony Shaloub and Brooke Adams, Martha Graham, Ted Turner, Ralph Fiennes (on the Beltline) and a gaggle of celebrity chefs. I once applied for a job as George Peppard’s assistant when I lived in England and received a very nice rejection letter signed by him (or the assistant who beat me out for the job). I’m someone who gets starstruck, so I’m sure I smiled wide with an awkward expression on my face during these encounters. Ms. Harrison was adored by everyone she met, gorgeous with perfect freckles splashed across her aquiline nose. She would strut around in her bikini, fans following her from a disrespectful distance. During most daylight hours, she sat on her throne, behind dark sunglasses, a regal expression on her face while she surveyed her kingdom. She was royalty and I loved her deeply. My summers were filled with celebrities of a different kind. They ruled over the swimming pools of my youth. Barbie Harrison was a lifeguard at our swim club. All summer long, she and the other Hollywood lifeguards at Colony Swim Club would reign supreme, sitting on their stands twirling their whistles while looking down upon the swimmers, chicken fighters and annoyed mothers. They were aristocrats. I don’t know if it was the giddiness of summer vacation, their matching Speedo bathing suits (an occasional bikini), all that flesh and heat or just my youthful midwest naivety, but those lifeguards added glam to my life. This summer, I hope you find your magic and take this issue along with you when you head to the pool or shady perch. SOUTHERN DESIGN & REMODELING Southern Design & Remodeling recently remodeled a modern traditional kitchen with custom inset cabinetry and custom paint. The island was built using rustic alder wood with a custom stain to add warmth and contrast to the kitchen. They added decorative panels to the refrigerator to give it that built-in look and appliance garages on either side of the sink to help keep the countertops from getting too cluttered. The team reconfigured

the breakfast nook by removing the wall of windows and replacing them with a single window above the new sink area to give the homeowner the larger, more functional kitchen they desired. In addition, they removed the outdated soffit above the old island and took the new cabinetry all the way to the ceiling, making the kitchen feel much more open. Developments like Buckhead Village and Andrews Square keep evolving and changing and keep the city feeling fresh and exciting. There are always new restaurants and galleries opening up, so there is always something new to explore!

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR SUMMERS IN THE CITY? My husband Alex and our two girls and I spend a lot of time outside in our backyard, a ton of time swimming, and

we eat our weight in Jeni’s Ice Cream. We love exploring the farmer’s market at The Cathedral of St. Philip on Saturday mornings and walking Chastain Park. Plus the playgrounds at Chastain and Memorial Park can’t be beat on a Saturday morning.

AS AN ENTREPRENEUR, WHAT BENEFITS DOES BUCKHEAD OFFER AS A BUSINESS OWNER? My company Her Campus Media is based in Boston, and I’ve been working remotely since 2015. Meet superstar television reporter and host, Cara Kneer and her beautiful family. Our photographer, Jolie Loren, captured the joy and playfulness of Cara's crew. We sat down with her to dip into her busy life.

YOU GOT YOUR START IN BROADCAST JOURNALISM IN 2008 AS A REPORTER AND CO-HOST IN SALT LAKE CITY. NOW, YOU GRACE OUR MORNING TELEVISION VIEWING AS CO-HOST ON 11ALIVE'S ATLANTA & COMPANY. WHAT DOES YOUR AVERAGE (!) DAY LOOK LIKE AS A WORKING MOM WITH THREE SMALL CHILDREN. There are many great things about my job, but, at the top would have to be the freedom it allows me to take my daughter to school and be home when the boys get off the bus! I'm up early helping my husband get the boys ready for school. Then, I take my daughter to her preschool at 9:00 and arrive at 11Alive shortly after. I am out of the studio by the early afternoon most days. We went to a shorter show at the start of the pandemic, and we haven't gone back yet to our previous 90 minutes. It just depends on the day, but if time allows, I'm sneaking in a walk at the park or running to the grocery. All the things that need to be done. We usually eat dinner together depending on the kids' activities, but there is rarely a night with nothing to do. I'm at the stage of life where I fall into bed at 9:30 exhausted. My husband and I are still just trying to finish Ozark!

YOU BOUGHT YOUR HOME IN 2014 AND IN 2019 TOOK IT DOWN TO THE STUDS TO BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME. AMAZING! Architect Jeffrey Bruce Baker, helped us design a minimalist treehouse retreat. We wanted to keep the footprint of the home, but make it more accessible for our family of five and our frequent guests! The focus while designing was bringing the outdoors inside, having just the right amount of space to keep organized, and help with the flow of a busy daily life! I think we accomplished that. We love our home. We feel like we live in the jungle, but can still walk to restaurants, the grocery store and a nearby nature preserve, too. CONTINUED >

WHILE A BACKYARD POOL MAKES HOT SUMMER DAYS MORE FUN, HOW WILL YOUR FAMILY BE SPENDING TIME THIS MONTH? James is 9, Isaac is 6 and Liza is 2. We have been into encouraging them to explore and giving them more responsibilities in general. We love to walk over to Blue Heron Nature Preserve or to Chastain Park. Our spring and summer is filled with lots of baseball - playing and watching.

AND, ON THE OCCASIONAL DATE NIGHT, WHERE DO YOU TWO SNEAK OFF TO? My husband, Lee, is a sports medicine physician for Emory University. He is the head sports medicine physician for The Atlanta Braves. It was such an amazing experience watching them win The World Series last year. It was cool to be a tiny part of the magic in a city we've adopted as our own! If we do get a date night, we are pretty low key. We will try a new restaurant or walk to a local neighborhood bar. We love 10 Degrees South, Le Colonial or any of the stalwarts in our neighborhood.

She got me involved and I had the honor of hosting their first gala this year. It's an incredible place and I hope it continues to be generously funded so we can get the resources and help to kids who desperately need it.
