Atlanta lost one of the best when Sam Massell passed on March 6 at the age of 94. He was forever our champion. Massell, the city’s first Jewish mayor, also broke barriers by appointing the city’s first African American department heads and the first woman to the City Council. I was proud to have met Sam at the annual luncheons of the Buckhead Coalition where he served as president for decades. He ran a tight meeting, always adjourning promptly, reminding us he knew our time was precious. It was an honor to write our story in 2020 about Sam’s retirement. After it was published, he sent me a handwritten thank-you note. I wrote him a postcard from Lake Michigan and he wrote me one more time with sincerity and southern charm that I’ll never forget. May his gumption and service live on in all of us! I hope you enjoy our annual issue dedicated to women. This month we are featuring working moms in a story written and produced by Sean O’Keefe. Our senior account manager Karyn Slovin hopped behind the wheel of a 2021 Porsche Taycan 4S and then met with the women department heads of Porsche Atlanta Perimeter who are driving the business. Robanne Schulman again brings us her spring fashion finds and we meet Naomi Gasson, mom and business owner, who generously shares her story of advocacy for her son. Kelly Weber’s family is well served by her decision to join the Board of Directors for Pebble Tossers, a youth development non profit whose mission is to empower and equip youth to lead through service. With a successful career at OneDigital, and two boys Dutch and Pierce, she and her husband, James, are happily consumed by their careers and their active family. Each of her children play three sports while maintaining a few academic extracurricular activities. Kelly freely admits that she cannot accomplish all that she does without struggle. She is not embarrassed to tell others about her personal journey with mental health and is comfortable sharing with others as part of the way she gives back to the community. In her spare time, Kelly enjoys coaching basketball, entertaining, and involving her kids in her work as a part of achieving her work-life balance.

On a sunny, warm day in Atlanta, I had the pleasure of experiencing a test drive in a stunning white Porsche Taycan 4S. Darvee, a Porsche Atlanta Perimeter Brand Ambassador, took me through the Porsche Advanced Cockpit and away we went. This Porsche is fully electric and handled like a dream. Getting this baby from 0 to 60 took nothing at all! Our Senior Sales Manager, Karyn Slovin, took one for the team and test drove the Taycan 4S, recommended to her by Porsche Atlanta Perimeter General Manager Mike Boyd. VALARIE COBB Having arrived in Atlanta as of November 2020 from Cincinnati, I am happy to have become a part of the Jim Ellis family. Sharing some of the enthusiasm for cars as my brothers did growing up, I fell in love with Porsche, having even displayed a Porsche 911 Turbo poster on my wall as a child. In my process of becoming a Porsche Certified Brand Ambassador, I have learned so much about the history of Porsche and the brand, which I find very prestigious and fascinating. I am excited about continuing to learn, meeting more Porsche enthusiasts, introducing others to the brand and becoming a valuable asset to my clientele. My ultimate Porsche to date is the 2016 911 R. A girl can dream, can’t she?

CAROL DUSTER In 1998, I was a bartender and had been for roughly 15 years. Feeling a serious burnout from my years in the food and beverage industry, I knew that there had to be more for me out there. I recall picking up the AJC Sunday edition, which is how you found a job in 1998. In the help wanted section I noticed that there were several car dealerships who were willing to hire and train me. The ads read, “Wanted: self-starter, motivated, energetic.” Well, that describes me! I walked into Jim Ellis VW, sold myself and landed the gig! I quickly learned about cars, how they work, the brand and the competition. I also learned that people buy cars from people, and if I don’t listen to the client and make every attempt to fulfill their needs, they have other options.

Fast forward one year into my new career, I was awarded salesperson of the year by outselling my 17 counterparts in 1999. So, I guess girls do sell cars. There have been many accolades over the years, but I must say that being a team member and manager here at Porsche Atlanta Perimeter, as part of the Jim Ellis Automotive Group, has been the most fulfilling in my auto industry career. I have the opportunity to interact with the most amazing clientele and help them realize their Porsche dreams. I know that for many women, diamonds are their best friend, but for me personally, Porsche’s are my diamonds. My favorite diamond is the 911 Cabriolet.

LIS MIRANDA, SERVICE ADVISOR Born in New York, New York and raised by immigrant parents, I watched my dad work on cars and eventually open his own repair shop. I always enjoyed learning about the inner workings and engineering of cars. This passion grew with the years and turned into a career. Now with over ten years in the automotive industry, I am able to to bring my exceptional knowledge of German engineering and extraordinary customer service skills to Porsche Atlanta Perimeter. My goal for the future is to run a luxury dealership and continue my father’s dream.

My husband and I own our own roofing company. Not working is not an option for us, plus I really enjoy the work I do and don’t want to be a stay at home mum. We moved to America in 2016 and have no family close by to help with the raising of our small people. Until January of this year, our 4 and 7-year-olds were in full time education. However, we started to experience some issues with our 4 year old at school. He kept getting sent home for not participating, running out of the class room and generally misbehaving. As soon as he learned how to get sent home, I was being asked to pick him up 3-4 times a week! He was eventually asked to leave the private school we enrolled him in, because they believed that he had “sensory processing issues.” This curve ball was initially difficult! All the local day care centers that we wanted to send him to were full until August. I didn’t know how was I going to be able to look after a 4-year-old AND work. It is easy to feel overwhelmed with work and childcare. We had to adjust as a family. My work week now looks very different to a typical 9-5, and I am grateful for the flexibility. I plan my calendar out to the minute, so I can achieve as much as possible on the days I am working. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I go to the YMCA and our son attends the childcare setting there. He is now one of the older children, so he enjoys playing with the younger children and is socially exposed to other kids rather than just being at home with me. The library is next door so we visit there several times a week and he loves picking out new books. He is a proud owner of his very own library card. It is so easy as a mother to take on the main role of all the childcare. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I attend several networking events. My husband has this time with our son. They go hiking, visit job sites, go to the bank. They have a great time together! We now have a home manager that comes Monday Thursday afternoons. That has been a game changer! She helps with meal prep, washing and tidying. She reads with the kids and picks up our 7 year old from school. It has been a great investment for our family life. Every night from 5 - 7 p.m. my husband and I dedicate time to spend with the kids, reading, board games, playing outside – no chores or work allowed. Everyone in the household seems so much happier. I don’t believe in a work-life balance, but I do believe in a “blend” of life.

Let spring fashion be your anecdote for, well, everything After all of the past blah, these 2022 spring and summer fashion trends are just the nectar we need to fuel us. Everything screams optimism: the bright pops of color, the fun and intricate details. I can’t take it! I’m talking palettes that pop, whether head to toe or an accessory, florals for people who don't love florals (like me) and fabulous pieces to top off your looks in the evening. I’m super excited about 2022 spring/summer fashion. Here are five looks I am excited about for my personal shopping clients, and of course, all of my dear BuckHaven readers! 30

Sabot is a top fave boutique with 19 years in Buckhead. Owner Desireé Osmon always has the perfect fashion forward looks as well as amazing shoes, bags and accessories. My fave Tibi piece in one of my alltime favorite colors, bright yellow. I love how you can take the yellow skirt off and wear it separately over shorts or whatever!

Susan Singletary, the owner of Peoples, has been in Buckhead for 28 years. This stellar boutique holds a curated collection of designers and fashion that transcends seasons. My spring favorite from Peoples is this striped Partow dress.

T H EORY Theory is always a great go-to place in Buckhead Village, especially for suiting for women and men. My favorite piece from their collection is their leather Moto Jacket in sage. You can’t go wrong.

TAS SE L S Tassels has also been a staple high-end jewelry boutique in Buckhead for years. My current favorite collection is by Walters Faith. These stunning bracelets in rose gold are the new neutral for your jewelry repertoire!
