All of its genes are dominant. One look tells you that performance runs in the family. A shape modeled after its sports car and motorsports siblings. An instantly recognizable flyline. A turbocharged V6 with 335 hp. The family resemblance is uncanny.

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Karyn Slovin | karyn.slovin@citylifestyle.com

When we first started publishing BuckHaven City Lifestyle magazine TEN years ago, readers responded, "finally!" Now, after ten years of bringing you stories about notable neighbors, businesses committed to serving the community and nearby non-profits, we hope you'll join us in celebrating all things BUCKHAVEN. We've printed 4,500-plus pages of local stories and ads from businesses committed to our readers and the magazine's mission. It's very likely you've seen someone you know in the magazine (and maybe we've featured YOU). When we launched, we were the eleventh title in the City Lifestyle family. Now, there are more than 120 magazines serving readerships like ours, all across the nation. Our publisher, Jim Newman, was inducted into the City Lifestyle Hall of Fame in 2021 for his commitment to print journalism. As publisher of our sister magazines, Johns Creek City Lifestyle and Alpharetta City Lifestyle, Jim continues to work to help businesses find their marketing footing. Our Senior Marketing Manager, Karyn Slovin has been with us since day one and works tirelessly for her clients who ADORE her. She's a firecracker and we wouldn't be here, 10 years later, without her. Since you're reading this, we know you believe in Buckhead and Brookhaven and hope you'll join us in honoring our anniversary by volunteering a few extra hours with your favorite non-profit AND visiting one of our advertisers. As always, keep the story ideas coming and email me with any comments. I love hearing from you! Enjoy this travel issue. I hope it takes you to your happy place. Happy Anniversary to us! All my best,

One of the many tasting flights offered at Heretic Brewing

One of Mancas Corner's historical buildings makes a perfect home for the Vezér Family Vineyards.

Fairfield, California is one of the states’s last relatively undeveloped wine destinations and it is ripe for the picking. Fairfield’s Rush Ranch is dedicated to preserving land for ranching and farming and also ensuring locals access to nature preserves that support hundreds of species of plants and animals, including many endangered or threatened species. The sprawling wetlands and iconic rolling hills of green spread across the horizon are an important part of the San Francisco Bay Estuarine Research Reserve, beckoning everyone who visits to get lost in the rich, untouched wilderness of Northern California. Fueled by the same coastal winds and many of the same microclimates as neighboring Napa County, the Solano County’s Green and Suisun Valleys have a rich history of wine-making dating back to the 1860s. Fairfield is home to some of the world’s best cabernet sauvignon and petite syrah. Most wines in this region are rustic, fruit-forward, and yet to be discovered. Village 360 is a full-circle community anchored by Backroad Vines. Featuring a tasting room, fine dining restaurant, casual cafe, coffee shop, event space, and makers market, its sleek design is juxtaposed against the Vaca Mountains, offering respite and wood-fired pizza. Be sure to include a stop at Il Fiorello Olive Oil Company. It is simply amazing. Owner, grower, miller, and olive aficionado Ann Sievers hosts the most insightful

olive oil tastings. Milled from more than 13 varieties of olive trees grown on her farm, its easy to see her passion for the finest olives and olive oil. With an “all healthy olives are welcome” attitude toward milling, Il Fiorello’s annual community milling program gathers some 65 families, and their olives, to a harvest celebration. Ann believes that “the program represents the diversity of our community and its dedication to good oil.” Mankas Grill and neighboring Vezér Family Vineyard are but a few of the must-see businesses that occupy the intersection of Clayton Road and Mankas Corner. This is a little bastion of old-world California and satisfies the ultimate California wine country get-a-way. Whether it’s the fireside patio table at Mankas Grill or a back yard wine tasting at Vezér, it seems that everyone you meet is connected to the local wine industry. “With so many outstanding wines in the Suisun Valley, it was a simple choice to feature only local wines,” said Kyle Barraza, chef and owner of Mankas Grill. While visiting, be sure to swing by Mangels Vineyards. It is a wine tourist’s perfect hidden gem. Whether your day includes a tour of the Jelly Belly Candy Company, a train ride into the past at the Western Train Museum, a delicious craft beer at Heretic Brewing, or a visit to the eclectic Pioneer Tap Room, do make wine tasting the beginning and end of your day in Fairfield.

Why Singing Soothes Her Soul

ARTICLE BY CAROLE BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOLIE LOREN

I love to sing. I have never thought of myself as a great singer, but singing has always made me happy. So, when I heard through my friends at church that a new non-audition chorus would use our church for rehearsals, I signed up and became one of the 19 original singers in the North Atlanta Voices. I didn’t know what part I would sing at our first rehearsal, but I decided I would be safer tucked away with the altos, who were mostly safe from high notes. I quickly found that all levels of singing experience surrounded me - some were professional musicians, some had experience with choirs or choruses, and others who were more like me, had little to no experience.

ONE VOCALIST WAXES POETIC ABOUT NORTH ATLANTA VOICES 22

O UR TOWN | ARTS + CU LTURE

Our conductor, Lucas Tarrant, is a talented and engaging teacher and an expressive musician. He provides us with informative direction so that anybody can participate and not feel left out of the artful music we make. Lucas has great faith in us, and we are challenged with varying degrees of difficulty in our musical selections. Our songs are from the classical choral canon, but we have learned and performed songs from multiple centuries and in more than five languages. If you had asked me before this experience if I had sung in more than five languages, I would have laughed at the thought. I had never performed for a live audience before, and I found the experience of working together in preparation for our concert exhilarating. One of the significant discoveries for me was how people of all ages and backgrounds who sing together quickly develop a sense of community. What unites us, chorus and audience alike, is a common goal of making beautiful music and bringing people together. Joining this chorus has opened my life to so many new avenues. I had just retired from a large organization in a professional services role and mainly associated with fellow professionals. In the chorus, I have met people from many different life experiences. I have challenged myself to take private lessons where I have learned to sing arias in other languages. Also, I have furthered my commitment to the success of NAV by joining its board of directors to help our founders, Cheryl and Lucas, get the recognition they deserve. We are blessed with outstanding leadership and very talented and enthusiastic singers. I am happy because I sing. The Spring Concert will feature popular choral standards, including Whitacre, Offenbach, Copland, and more. Our conductor will provide background about each song and composer. We will have a raffle with products donated by local businesses, and a complimentary wine and cheese reception following the concert. North Atlanta Voices is Atlanta’s only non-auditioned community chorus, cofounded by Lucas Tarrant and Cheryl Logan in 2018. What started as a spark and idea of a young voice teacher is now a 45 member choir. The goal is to provide an opportunity for people to come together, make music and friends, and foster a positive environment focused on inclusion, diversity, and community. Carole Browne has been singing with the chorus from its inception in 2018. She is a dedicated alto. North Atlanta Voices Spring Concert April 29, 2022 7:30 P.M. ONCE UPON A TIME

HOW D O I LOV E T H EE? L ET M E COU N T T H E WAYS.

Finishing a delicious afternoon nap after my long wildflower hike with expert-in-residence, Esther Blakely, I heard a banjo player tuning his instrument on the porch below. Stretching, I headed down to dinner in the lodge. The meal was a fairytale, the chef sharing his love for locally caught fish and just-foraged food with us. Walking down the broad lawn at The Swag, I watched the stars light up the Cataloochee Valley below and helped myself to a mug of chamomile tea before turning in. I lit the fire in my room’s big stone fireplace (housekeeping had set it for me) and trusted it would blaze while I was in my steam shower. It did. Beautifully. I cracked the window, threw a few more logs on and fell asleep to the crackle and warmth of my own fire. I dreamed of doing it all again. And again.
