LIFESTYLE LETTER
Love is in the air
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Jim Newman | jnewman@citylifestyle.com SENIOR ACCOUNT MANAGER
Karyn Slovin | karyn.slovin@citylifestyle.com
During this month, our issue is all about love and creativity. Love, well, it’s Valentine’s Day and you can’t swing a dead cat without hitting something pink and glittery as you navigate your day here in BuckHaven. Maybe I overdosed on the holiday working retail (back in the day) and racing to get three dozen cupcakes safely to the kids’ classrooms before the sugar-high party commenced. One year, I gave into the frenzy and served dessert for dinner. My kids thought the idea of chocolate fondue for dinner was dreamy and we continued the tradition for a number of years. Now, I like to think about Valentine’s Day as another opportunity to show love AND appreciation for people who make my days brighter. Our copy editor, Stacy Conde, deserves all the fondue she can stomach for putting up with my last-minute changes and persnickety preferences. Thank you, superstar! Karyn Slovin is on my list too. Karyn manages the lovely ads you see in the magazine (ahem, they keep us afloat) and is always cheerful and works her chocolate kisses off to make sure our ad partners are happy. That brings me to you. You, dear readers, make me happy. Thank you for taking the time to read our magazine, support our advertisers and email me your story ideas. I’m lost without you all! Enjoy this issue and DO find someone in your life who deserves your appreciation and love.

My dear French macaron, Our love started off rocky. We first crossed paths in Paris in 2012, but I foolishly overlooked the depths of your complexity. I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight or even love at first bake. I found you unpredictable and very difficult to understand. After months of some successes and many failures together, I started to understand how you work, what you like, and what you don’t like. Even after every day together for over a year, I still learned new things about you that made me love you more and more. I devoted my food science master’s thesis to you! From the fact that you must be baked within a 5°F temperature range in the oven, to the fact that you’re extra sensitive when it’s humid outside…you truly are a diva and I love you for that. More than mastering your baking technique and the food science behind it, my favorite thing about you is the endless possibilities for decorating & filling you. I think you look particularly nice with metallic accents or a pearl luster; but designs such as woodland animals or holiday themes are just as beautiful on you. I never run out of inspiration with your designs, and I certainly will never get bored of all the flavors to try on you. You bring so much light into my life, as well as many others, by being your beautiful, complex, delicate, and sweet self. No other cookie can compare. Sweet regards, Kim Paladino p.s. I am based in Atlanta and I’ve been in the French macaron business since 2020 after leaving my job of seven years as a chemist. I have also worked as a recipe developer and food photographer for clients for over eight years. Check out my store and blog at TheFoodKimist.com

We are old school and pay attention to details so that we have the best outcome.
Herminio Mora spends all day with wood. At work with his business H.A.Mora Inc., a full-service exterior and interior painting, roofing, and renovation company. And at play in his shop, woodworking and creating beautiful bread boards, tables and decorative accent pieces for the home. When he launched his business, his workdays were spent perfecting framing, designing and executing trim work and painting. Working with wood is in his DNA. "When I first started in construction, I noticed there were more efficient ways to do framing as well as trimming. I would improvise, then create some figures with the scraps," says Herminio. CL: What kind of woodworking projects did you complete in 2021 and what new kind of projects are you looking forward to in 2022? HM: I have always focused on the high-end market which demands custom handmade wood kitchen and bathroom cabinets. However, entering 2021 after the pandemic, the demand for these skyrocketed, especially due to the shortage in wood and labor supply. I noticed that I could also focus on complementary items such as tables and cutting boards, so we can offer a wide range of products to our customers and stay consistent with their design. We will continue to focus on this in 2022 and hopefully a small pre-ordered tables and cutting boards shop. CL: What brought you to the north Atlanta area and why do you like the area for your business? HM: I actually have been in Atlanta since 1996. I decided to come right after the Olympics
20

because of the high demand in the construction industry. Word of mouth about my work spread out and as north Atlanta expanded, so did my business. I like the area because you have a combination of houses built in the 60's all the way through the 2020s. This gives you the ability to work with different styles, use different techniques and be creative to adapt to every situation. Also, the fact that houses are surrounded by nature gives it a special touch! CL: Tell us about these projects. HM: I used hickory oak for the bar, as well as for the lattice behind the piano, because it is more malleable, and white oak for the table. We use several tools, but the key is the sanding! We are old school and pay attention to details so that we have the best outcome. It is a very slow process, but gives you the best finishes. The epoxy used for the orange inlay table is very unique! CL: What trends are you excited about for your industry? Is painting brick still a popular solution? HM: The upcoming years will be very interesting, because of supply chain issues and material availability. I am very excited to see what can be done with less, to get out of the pre-made ordinary stuff, and homeowners and designers actually doing more with local providers. I always tell my clients that painted brick looks good, but you need to apply the right primer and make sure it is pressure washed every eight months or so. When it comes to interior painted bricks, it always depends on the house style.

Magda and Corey Cooper are constantly working. And playing. For the founders of superstar standup paddle board company BOTE, research and development for their boards starts in their hometown of Destin, where they live with their three kids. “We are the consumer and our kids product test and inspire new ideas. We can do R&D in our backyard, try out new ideas with the kids and watch them interact with products and do our photoshoots at favorite parks nearby,” says Magda, a three-time collegiate National Champion swimmer at Auburn University and former financial advisor before partnering (in marriage and business) with Corey. Corey and Magda moved to Florida after graduating from Auburn University and soon saw an opportunity to improve the design of the paddle boards they were using on weekends. The Coopers chose to stay put in Destin, a small town where the outdoor lifestyle reigns, and have grown BOTE’s fleet to more than a dozen boards as well as kayaks and docks for fishing, paddling and recreation. “We love the small town of Destin, the ease of access and all the nature surrounding us. For the brand, there are challenges - which is true for any business home - but we find that all our employees are into the same lifestyle, which benefits BOTE and makes our jobs more fun,” says Magda. For many of us, Destin is a favorite vacation spot. For the crew at BOTE, the area feeds their passion. “We moved here because we like the water. We spend a majority of our time fishing and hanging out with friends. This is the DNA that is in the brand,” says Magda. They have found unending southern hospitality and support from a welcoming community that cheers their business on, fueling growth and creativity.
"Destin is not your typical ‘Florida,’" says Corey. “It's a smaller town, more connected to Alabama than Miami and with a slower pace. The local culture has influences from all over, but it definitely has its own style and flavor. Old school charter fishing boats, kayaking, water-skiing, surfing -- water is the epicenter of the Destin lifestyle, which fits us perfectly.” While the original shape of their first board is still around, the brand has expanded. Exploded, really. They have always taken design seriously, with an end goal of function and beautiful design. “I wanted a board that was stable enough to fish from, yet paddled efficiently,” says Corey. “A board that could hold a cooler for my beer. A board that was simple, fresh and fit our lifestyle. A board that virtually anybody at any age could paddle with ease. It needed the capabilities of a boat with the simplicity of a board. And, it needed to look good...really good.” Magda’s favorite spot for a sunset paddle Launch at Clement Taylor Park on the North Channel and paddle toward Crab Island. For a paddle across more enclosed water, put in at Norriego Point, and paddle Destin Harbor with access to the canals to explore and peek at the houses. 1. PLENTY OF BUILT-IN STORAGE No one likes a cluttered countertop. To keep things neat and tidy, but still have all of your daily supplies at arms-reach, plan for built-in storage. Use inserts for drawers and cabinets. Locating hidden electrical outlets inside of drawers allows you to charge devices like toothbrushes completely out of sight. You can even install a holster for your blow dryer and leave it plugged in. 2. FREESTANDING BATHTUBS Enjoy a luxurious soak in style! With so many beautiful free-standing bathtubs available today, why not make one the focal point of your bathroom? Ranging from the most traditional to sleek and modern, bathtubs come in all shapes and sizes to fit every environment. Loud jet tubs that are difficult to keep clean are a thing of the past, so keep it simple with a beautiful soaking tub. CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ BUC KHAV E N

3. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION People want their bathrooms to be filled with natural light. When building from scratch or renovating, there is a much stronger desire now than ever before to place primary bathrooms in eastern exposures to get the best morning light. This is healthy for you because that blue spectrum of light tells your brain to wake up and sets your daily rhythm. 4. SUSTAINABILITY Today, there are more luxurious, sustainable materials available not only for the bath, but also for the whole home. Clients are getting excited about having beautiful options that are healthy for them and for the environment.

Setting the Stage
ARTICLE BY GREG EUSTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROVIDED
Growing up, Josh Jansen was the Lego kid. He could spend hours making things out of the colorful blocks. He was also the kid who could make something cool out of an empty box, a battery and two popsicle sticks – whatever stuff was handy. Today, Jansen is the technical director at The Atlanta Opera. He oversees and coordinates all the technical aspects that go into any production, from light and sound to scenery and props. Staging an

opera requires behind-the-scenes work from many others as well, with hands-on efforts from costume makers and stage managers. All of these different departments have to work together seamlessly to deliver the director’s vision of the show. Working alongside Jansen is Wanda Creech, the props artisan responsible for all the "things" on stage, from furniture and decorative pieces that sit quietly in the background to the rose that was central to the company’s production of "Carmen" last spring. Having the necessary props sometimes means buying them, but sometimes Wanda creates them. For the upcoming production of "The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs", for instance, she is making a replica Tiffany floor lamp with a magnolia shade like the one that famously stood in Jobs’ office. An original would cost $13,000, which is well beyond the opera company’s props budget. Creech, a graduate of Gwinnett County’s Parkview High School, found a replica Tiffany base for a few hundred dollars, but the shade was a bigger problem. Ultimately, she found a 25-inch acrylic punch bowl. Coupled with paint and pictures from the Tiffany & Co. website, Creech is well on her way to having a realistic Tiffany lamp for that production. Jansen, Creech and lighting supervisor Marissa Michaels – the full time technical team – usually have the luxury of working on shows months ahead of time, but the weeks before any production are very busy. The crew will balloon to as many as 45 people, including carpenters, electricians, painters and other tradespeople. "Making," Jansen said, "is a form of self-expression. While the singers on stage and the musicians in the pit are expressing their art, makers are expressing their craft." “I have immense respect for the artisans who are able to build complicated things so effortlessly. They always seem like superheroes to me,” says Tomer Zvulun, the Carl W. Knobloch Jr. General and Artistic Director. Each year, The Atlanta Opera produces six operas; four at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre and two more in unusual venues around the metro area. Each season has a rhythm of building up and tearing down, and of solving challenges particular to each show.
32
B ACK STAGE | A RTS + CULTURE
The “pandemic season” of 2020-21, however, marched to the beat of a different drummer. When COVID hit, Zvulun challenged each of the company’s departments to find ways to perform a season safely. The production department (home to Jansen, Creech and Reynolds) was asked to find a safe place to perform. Relying on advice from Emory University’s Carlos del Rio and the company’s Health & Safety Task Force, it was apparent to Jansen and the team that performing outside was the best choice, which kicked off a cascade of other choices. “This completely changed the model,” Jansen says. “We learned a lot about doing shows outside. There was certainly a learning curve.” Jansen researched different tent sizes, shapes and styles, but nothing off-the-shelf really fit the bill. Instead, he ordered a custom tent – a 160-foot by 60-foot red and blue big top with walls that could roll up for optimal ventilation. The Big Tent, as it was soon called, became the Opera’s home theater, first at Oglethorpe University’s baseball field in the fall and then in the parking lot at Cobb Energy Centre in the spring.
