Christine Pullara is a ray of sunshine and we had so much fun decorating and shooting her kitchen (in October!) for the cover feature about the story of her mother's generosity and a very special red velvet cake recipe (below). Violet’s Red Velvet Cake - Christine Pullara’s mother shares her recipe!

Preheat oven to 325°F Cake Ingredients 2 1/2 cups cake flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1 1/4 cups cooking oil, 1 cup buttermilk, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1 tablespoon cocoa, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 2 ounces red food coloring Icing Ingredients 1 large cream cheese, softened; 1 stick butter, softened; 1 box confectioner sugar, 1 cup chopped pecans, 1 teaspoon vanilla By hand, mix the sugar with the oil. Slightly beat eggs and add to mixture. Add buttermilk little by little and stir. Add vanilla, salt, vinegar, baking soda, cocoa, red food coloring. Then, mix well for a couple of minutes. Mixture should look soupy. Bake for 30 minutes. Start checking with a toothpick in the center to see if the toothpick comes out clean. This is a strange cake…it always cracks in the middle so it doesn’t appear done…keep baking for a few minutes at a time. Don’t over bake as sides will get dry. Center will dry up when cooled. Let cool, then turn cake on to serving dish. Let cake cool before icing. For icing, blend a stick of butter in little pieces with little pieces of cream cheese, add sugar a little at a time, add vanilla with a mixer. After icing is soft, stir in nuts or sprinkle on top of iced cake.

When Gloria Mattei stepped out of the corporate world to open a franchise brand bakery, she knew it was risky. Now, nine years later, the mother of two has expanded and recently taken over the Sandy Springs location in addition to her Alpharetta one. Dallas-based Nothing Bundt Cakes was founded in Las Vegas in 1997 by Dena Tripp and Debbie Shwetz. It has grown to more than 430 franchised and corporate bakeries in more than 40 states and Canada. VETERAN OWNED BUSINESS The whole concept of Nothing Bundt Cakes is based on the premise of bringing joy to people - not just for special occasions but for any occasion or “just because”. The bakery is a one-stop shop carrying creative decorations and small gifts that can be accessorized and displayed with the Bundlets. But more than the bakery, Gloria found happiness in community outreach and being incredibly involved in the Alpharetta community. It was there she found an organization called Lionheart Works, which aligned with the hopes and dreams she held for her son, who is on the autism spectrum. Proudly, she says she has employed five people successfully over the years by partnering with Lionheart Works. It is all about finding the right place for these people. Showing them that they can do what others can and fostering their assets. Although taking over the Sandy Springs location means double the workforce and a lot more work, she couldn’t be more thrilled. “I am so excited to get involved in the Sandy Springs community as I have done in Milton and Alpharetta,” she says. And with the recent expansion, her husband was able to leave his corporate job and join the family business. Gloria says, “I now serve the North Fulton market, which spans the GA 400 North Fulton Corridor - from Exit 2 thru Exit 12!” Owning these bakeries has become a truly positive experience for Gloria, one that continues to bring her joy. Now, she has a legacy that she can leave to both her children, and she is able to help special needs young adults find their place in the workforce and give them a fighting chance for independence. The sweetheart of Atlanta daytime television, Christine adores time with her family, celebrating traditions and nibbling on her mother’s red velvet cake, made with love and a story. “In our house, it’s not Christmas without my mother’s red velvet cake. She has been making it for decades, and so many friends and family members love it that she makes seven additional cakes for people to serve on Christmas Day. Believe me, that is no small task!” says Christine who lives in Buckhead with her husband Jim and their daughters, Caroline and Catherine. “She is a warm, thoughtful, generous person and she puts all that love and care into making the most delicious and festive cake.”

Violet Pullara started baking for her family and when she found her cake brought joy to friends, she decided to double, then more than triple her recipe so she could make deliveries to special people in her life who meant so much to her. “I’ve had other tasty red velvet cakes before, but there is just that intangible, special something that makes my mother’s stand out from the rest,” says Christine. “It is always delicious and creamy and no matter how full you are after your holiday meal… there is no way you could pass up a slice! I dare you!” This year, Christine and her family will celebrate Christmas with her brother-in-law here in Atlanta, then head to her hometown of Tampa to be with her extended family.

Interior designer Diane Johnson helped Christine decorate her newly renovated kitchen this year, adding bright touches of shimmery red and greenery, glittery gold and a traditional wreath. “I love the accents Diane chose, just right for our modern white kitchen,” says Christine. Diane owned a retail location in Johns Creek for more than 25 years. She now works from her new space in the design district of Norcross and consults for interior design projects throughout Atlanta. “Christine’s beautiful neutral kitchen was a perfect palette for Christmas decor and it was a pleasure to work with such a vibrant and positive person,” says Diane. own red velvet cake and sourced an urn-inspired vase and matching round platter, festive shiny gold deer and filled a curvy oversized glass apothecary jar with red ornaments. “I just love the vibe and now we’re all in the holiday spirit!” says Christine. “I hope you enjoy your holidays as much as I enjoy my mom’s cake!” During her career of more than 30 years in television, Christine has worn many hats. From award-winning news anchor to freelance journalist to commercial/voice over actor and model, Christine has covered news, sports, fashion, education and entertainment. In 1999, Christine began hosting the popular HGTV show Treasure Makers. She then spent several years as a television host and producer in Los Angeles working on shows for E! Entertainment, FOX and The Fine Living Network. In 2005, she moved to Atlanta to host the home improvement show Bushwhacked on Turner South, which earned two Southeast Emmy Awards. For the past 13 years, Christine has hosted Atlanta & Company weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on 11 Alive, the NBC affiliate.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO BAKE A DESSERT, BUT WANT TO SERVE SOMETHING THAT DOESN’T LOOK STORE-BOUGHT, SIMPLY TOP IT WITH BERRIES, HERBS, A SAUCE OR A HOLIDAY PROP TO GIVE IT A LITTLE SOMETHING EXTRA.

Make holiday entertaining easy with these styling food hacks that look impressive, but are simple to create. If you don't have time to bake a dessert, but want to serve something that doesn't look store-bought, simply top it with berries, herbs, a sauce or a holiday prop to give it a little something extra. We made a trip to Trader Joe's and purchased most of these items, and after some simple assembling and minimal baking, we were able to create a beautiful, eye-catching holiday spread.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE

DOUBLE CREME BRIE BOARD

An inexpensive cheesecake was purchased at Trader Joe's, but definitely needed a little something to make it look festive. Candied pecans (we made ours from scratch but they can be purchased), fresh berries and mint sprigs added color, dimension and interest.

A double creme brie with truffles can be purchased at Trader Joe's and is always a crowd favorite. After baking the brie, add berries and a sauce of your choosing to the top as a flavor enhancer. To add interest, this brie is drizzled with local honey, berries and candied pecans and is served with crackers.

APPLE TART

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CAKE

The apple tart was already really pretty right out of the box, however adding a few toppers made it look like it was made from scratch. Sliced pears, fresh herbs, berries and drizzled caramel added color and a homemade touch to this delicious treat.

If you don't have time to bake a cake but want your store bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries adorn the top of this cake. To add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece.

NAKED CAKE A cake mix, simple buttercream frosting and a gingerbread house kit is all it took to create this adorable 3-layered naked cake. After preparing the cake layers, simply ice the cake in a thin layer to give an opaque look that reveals some of the cake underneath. This cake was topped with a gingerbread house and coconut flakes to resemble snow.

GOURMET HOT CHOCOLATE If serving a warm beverage for guests to enjoy, consider hot chocolate with burnt sugar-rimmed mugs. If creating a hot chocolate bar, provide whipped cream and marshmallow toppings, as well as flavorings such as caramel, peppermint, or make it a boozy hot chocolate with whiskey, Bailey’s or peppermint schnapps.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
