LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy July, Friends This month, we celebrate freedom, and this year, we can revel in it more than ever. Free from (mostly) masking and distancing and worry. We salute all those who made this recent freedom possible and remember those lost in its pursuit. This month, my family is gathering for a reunion at Lake Michigan, vaccinated and ready, more than ever for bear hugs. I don’t want to say we compete to see who gives the longest, strongest hugs, but if you’re the first to release, well, it’s your loss. My brother Bob is the reigning king of the embrace. This summer there will be early morning paddles on the glassy bay, mid-afternoon sailing when the wind picks up and singing. Lots of singing. My parents were both musicians and we grew up practicing piano, singing in the church choir, and harmonizing (likely annoying all the non-Sparlings) at every turn. Being with my three brothers and sister and their wonderful husbands and wives and families is an elixir. We share family memories and find they differ from perspective and experience. We’ll carve out time this summer to work on our late brother Dan’s memoirs, a project I started during the pandemic. We lost Dan to AIDS in 1995. He was a generous educator and traveler, always searching for a deeper spiritual meaning and stopping along his path to turn his face to the sun. This is one of the songs we’ll sing together. One of our mother’s favorites.

The schools have seen a huge return to in-person lessons and enrollment is at an all-time high. This has allowed the schools to do charity work,

THE LOW CHATTER OF RESTAURANT PATRONS, THE CLINKING OF GLASSES, AND THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF STAFF THAT CULMINATES IN A HARMONY THAT LINGERS. The best way to catch this number is to take some time to lounge on one of the beautiful patios, sip a cocktail or mocktail, and just enjoy the melody. Of all the patios, there are a few that stand out: the island oasis of Yebo Beach Haus, the Parisian street vibes at Le Bilbouquet and the newly opened St. Julep atop the Kimpton Sylvan Hotel where the Buckhead skyline view is the star. Come relax on a patio for a while.

Large umbrellas create a patchwork of shadow and light on the cool cement. Buckhead’s Yebo Beach Haus serves up an island oasis that you do not have to travel to the beach to experience. What matches the patio so well is Yebo’s tropical, South African, and beachy cuisine. I would recommend the spicy chicken paillard, fresh whole branzino, rich and savory tuna tataki, meaty ostrich sliders, and the light BB Cooler or traditional Rosemary Vesper Martini to wash it all down.
