I’ll be doing some traveling, heading out to Asheville, the north Georgia mountains (Jackson County has tons going on), Southeastern Tennessee and to Kansas City to visit my grandson (he’s four months old now!). I also have two kids in college and my back-to-school shopping now includes second-hand furniture for apartments, full length down coats (my daughter is in NYC) and laptops (ka-ching). Gone are the days of number two pencils and 3-ring notebooks.

FINDING BALANCE HELPING KIDS COPE IS AN IMPORTANT LESSON AT SCHOOL

BuckHaven Lifestyle | August 2019

OUR KIDS ARE BOMBARDED BY MESSAGES, IMAGES, MEDIA AND OTHER UNSEEN PRESSURES THAT CAN CAUSE CONFUSION, FRUSTRATION AND UPHEAVALS IN BEHAVIOR. At school, teachers and administrators can be important resources for students as they face the big bad world. In this year’s annual round-up of private schools in Atlanta, we asked about the resources available to kids to help manage stress of growing up. It’s not easy! TRINITY SCHOOL 4301 Northside Parkway, NW TrinityAtl.org 404.231.8100 “To help manage stress and pressure, I recommend that elementary-aged children talk to their parents, who can help them understand that they do not have to be perfect and that mistakes are a normal part of life; make plenty of time for creative play and outdoor activities; and maintain an adequate sleep schedule and predictable routine.” Erica Pendleton, LPC, School Counselor WOODWARD ACADEMY 1662 Rugby Ave, College Park 404.765.4000 6565 Boles Rd, Johns Creek 404.765.4490 Woodward.edu “We know free play is integral to the academic and social success of our students—just take it from our classes who enjoy a quick sprint around the building before solving a tough math problem! Knowing how important physical activity is for young minds, we take our playgrounds seriously. We not only make frequent use of them (our prekindergarten students enjoy recess twice a day, plus a daily P.E. class), but also task our youngest students with a project-based activity to simulate their ideal playground. Our students’ involvement highlights just how much we value their opinions and our playground spaces.” Erica Wiltshire, Primary School Assistant Principal, Woodward Academy

At The Cottage School, our three pillars of strength support the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. Through small class sizes (no more than 10 students in a class, 4th – 12th grade) and experienced teachers, a vigorous anti-bullying campaign (Be the Voice), and a program that supports our students’ emotional needs (a comprehensive counseling program), TCS provides our school community with the tools and strategies to fulfill their true potential as confident, productive, and independent adults." ALL ABOUT JEFFREY AUGUST 26 MARKS 27 STYLISH YEARS OF GIVING

ATLANTA’S MOST PHILANTHROPIC AND FASHIONABLE AFFAIR, JEFFREY FASHION CARES, IS SET TO CELEBRATE 27 STYLISH YEARS ON MONDAY, AUGUST 26 AT 7 P.M. The annual event, which has become a mainstay on Atlanta’s social circuit, is founded by acclaimed retailer and arbiter of style, Jeffrey Kalinsky, who recently expanded his Atlanta store in Phipps Plaza and is now offering both men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, accessories and jewelry. What is aways an unforgettable evening, Jeffrey Fashion Cares will kick off with a cocktail reception and dynamic silent auction followed by a high-energy live auction. The evening’s pièce de résistance, a runway show featuring Kalinsky’s style selections from highend designers, once again promises to dazzle with looks from Celine, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Dries Van Noten, Sacai, Saint Laurent Paris, Balenciaga, Valentino, Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik. The 2019 event will be held at Phipps Plaza and benefit Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta, the Atlanta AIDS Fund (AAF), and the Medical University of South Carolina. New this year, Marsha Archer, CEO and President of M Squared Public Relations, joins veteran co-chairs Lila Hertz and Louise Sams to continue Kalinksy’s mission to raise the most funds and awareness for the event’s beneficiaries as possible. Selling out year after year, guests will slip into a completely transformed and private environment in the Monarch Court at Phipps Plaza located in the heart of Buckhead. Last year’s event raised nearly $625,000 for the organizations, and in its history, Jeffrey Fashion Cares has grown into one of the largest combined AIDS and breast cancer benefits in the country. BuckHaven Lifestyle has been a proud media sponsor for five years. JeffreyFashionCares.com.

How would you like to wake up to this every morning?

When the elevator door opened to the third floor, a stunning modern floral design greeted us and the spa’s staff checked us in with lockers, robes, slippers and a quick tour. My daughters are 23 and 27 and both booked a massage. One chose the Waldorf Astoria Massage, customized using movements inspired by a combination of various techniques from around the world. The other opted for the 50-minute Aromatherapy Massage, a holistic treatment using the power of essential oils with the best of eastern and western massage techniques. I enjoyed melting the years away with an Advanced Restorative facial. The 50-minute facial included an enzyme treatment to restore texture and tone, and a milk and Savannah honey bath. It was heavenly! We three collapsed and smiled knowing there

BARK IT UP If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables:

+ BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for four-legged friends at AKC.org.
