As a kid, I’d ride my 10-speed bike down a dusty dirt road to Colony Swim Club after I’d finished my chores and practiced piano.

With a towel, book, PB&J sandwich and a quarter in my backpack, I’d be set for the day. By 5:30 p.m., my mom and dad would pull up in the station wagon to swim a few laps during adult swim and we’d all head home for dinner on the back porch.

Shucking corn with my little sister, both of us slightly sunburnt and smelling of chlorine, we’d listen to the crickets chirping across the dark summer sky.

Finally falling into bed, with the windows wide open (who needs air conditioning in the Midwest in June?), we’d dream of doing it all again the next day.

I hope your summer is magical.

INGREDIENTS ++ 3 bottles Virgil Kaine High Rye Bourbon ++ 1 bottle Cocktail & Sons Oleo Saccharum (Citrus Syrup Enriched with Lemongrass, Ginger, and Cardamom) ++ 1 quart Fresh squeezed lemon juice ++ 2 pints Fresh blackberries (2 pints) ++ 1 handful Cardamom, muddled ++ 20 leaves Fresh mint ++ 5 Whole lemon peels ++ 1 gallon Aquafaba (chickpea juice)* ++ Ice DIRECTIONS Combine first five ingredients in a large serving vessel. “Slap” the mint to release the aromas and squeeze lemon peels to release oils into the batch, then add both to serving container.

TO SERVE Dry shake 4 oz. aquafaba per individual cocktail; add 6 oz. of mixture from large batch to shaker along with a scoop of ice.

Shake well. Pour into glass using a strainer.

If desired, garnish with a whole blackberry, additional mint and/or slice of lemon peel. Aquafaba may be created by soaking dry chickpeas overnight and reserving the liquid. A simpler method is to reserve liquid from canned chickpeas!

CV: About 90 percent of the athletes at UGA ride scooters to get to classes or tutoring or practice. I was on a scooter leaving the East Campus Village when a car pulled out in front of me. I broke my back, severed my spinal cord. I didn’t know the gravity of the situation but my dad did. And the coach and guys on the team kind of knew too. It took a while to sink in.
