Happy Fifth Anniversary to Us!
APRIL 2017 PUBLISHER
Jim Newman | Jnewman@LifestylePubs.com
We are thrilled to present our first ever "Best Of " issue, teeming with 50 fabulous businesses that you have chosen as your favorites. We were bowled over to see the tally, more than 8,000 of you chiming in to vote for the shops and services that you visit most often. More than 4,000 people visited our website in January for the nomination process. Then, twice that hit "send" on our final survey. Thank you all for showing that shopping local still takes the gold. We're having a party this month to celebrate with the winners and will share photos from the award ceremony in the next issue. In the meantime, DO look for the BEST OF window decals at stores you visit and be sure to congratulate the businesses who have earned the Buckhaven Best of 2017 designation. They are all listed in this issue, along with the runners up who also deserve a hearty pat on the back.

tlanta based non-profit, EDIN, the Eating Disorders Information Network, will hold its 7th Annual Celebrity Dance Challenge, the beloved event where local celebrities are paired with professional dancers to compete in all types of dance and raise funds for EDIN. The event takes place Thursday, April 20 at Buckhead Theatre. The Celebrity Dance Challenge is EDIN’s largest event, created to raise awareness about eating disorders and the importance of positive self-esteem. Proceeds from the event go directly into our community through programs and projects to prevent eating disorders through awareness, education and outreach. Fashioned after the hit show Dancing with the Stars™, EDIN’s Celebrity Dance Challenge is co-chaired by Cynthia Good, Sean O'Keefe and Meg Reggie, and under the artistic direction of celebrity dancer/choreographer Bubba Carr. Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception by Sean O’Keefe Events and be thoroughly entertained by emcees Christi Paul of CNN and Paul Milliken, Road Warrior of FOX 5’s Good Day Atlanta. And, of course, the dancers! Dance couples compete by dancing for votes. The number of fan votes received will determine the winner. Anyone can vote for his or her favorite celebrity for as little as $1 per vote at MyEDIN.org/cdc. These talented and generous souls will be taking to the dance floor on April 20: Stacey Adams of Harry Norman Realtors, Dr. Mark Beaty of Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery, Tammy McCall Browning of Good Moves, Jennifer Champion, Tabitha Grant of Domino’s, Chef Todd Dae Kulper of Doraku Sushi, Milly Marques of Brows by Milly, Adam Wattenbarger of Salem Media Group and Kathy Zickert of Smith, Gambrell & Russell. In 1996, Dina Zeckhausen, PhD, renowned Atlanta psychologist, author and playwright, founded EDIN – The Eating Disorders Information Network. EDIN’s School and Community Outreach initiatives have been honored by the National Eating Disorders Association and serve as a model for local grassroots organizations around the country. Co-chairs of the 2017 EDIN Celebrity Dance Challenge Cynthia Good, Sean O'Keefe and Meg Reggie had a blast at a recent photo shoot with dancer/choreographer-turned-professional-photographer Bubba Carr. While Bubba captured the elegance of the 7th annual dance competition event, he also wanted to show what it's all about: fun and dance! Committed to addressing the problem of eating disorders on a societal level, EDIN is devoted to preventing eating disorders, increasing public awareness, and helping those already suffering to find the informational and therapeutic services they need.

he Chamblee and Cumming-based Vintage Lawn and Landscape Services Owner Peter Wood is not solely focused on making the
grounds of homes and businesses picturesque. especially during the warm months. He says simply, "I enjoy making people happy." And that unselfish statement makes perfect sense since Wood's field of work experience for more than two decades demanded it. "I have always been in the service industry, be it restaurants to retail sales," he says. "However, being outside in the dirt and having the opportunity to provide a service for people is what I truly enjoy." Wood, 48, is originally from New Hampshire but has resided in Georgia for the past 22 years. His mission to keep the latter state naturally beautiful has been a successful one with the Clarkston, Georgia-based Vintage, which he started in 1999. "We are a full-ser-

Woods graciously offers some tips for how how we can have green, healthy lawns throughout the summer, including some crucial do's and don’ts for our readers: •
“Fertilization and weed control for turf is very important! You should have seven to eight applications a year based on your service provider.”
•
“Pre-emergent weed control is paramount this time of year.”
•
“Both warm (Bermuda, Zoysia) and cool-season grass (Fescue) demand the proper fertilizer. This is very important to the spring green-up process. Warm season grasses will also benefit from aeration especially in April, May, and June. This allows oxygen and fertilizer to penetrate directly to roots.”
•
“Develop a fertilizer program with a reputable company.”
•
“One inch of water a week is optimal. Two good, extended watering periods during the week are better than four to five quick hits with the sprinkler or irrigation system.”
•
“Warm season grasses should be cut at one to 2.5 inches, while cool seasons should be three inches.”
•
“Beware of too much seeding during aeration of Fescue grass especially September through November. Please read the labels for the proper rates of application. This is the same for weed control and fertilizer. Walter Reeves is a great resource for things to do and proper timing.” [Walter Reeves is popularly known as “ The Georgia Gardner” and has a very informative website at WalterReeves.com.]
•
“We at Vintage provide aeration and seeding, and use very sharp blades for our maintenance customers. Sharp blades are key because they will help keep lawns green and healthy.”
Thanks to Vintage Lawn and Landscape Service, homeowners' lawns will be green, business owners' landscape will look more professional, and overall, Wood's mission is accomplished: Everyone is happy.
