y dad was a small business owner and entrepreneur, working with the Detroit automotive industry for nearly 50 years. His plant did vacuum metalizing and injection molding for the Big Three, cranking out tens of thousands shiny silver Chrysler logos for sedan dashboards, long plastic swooshes for exterior trim on Ford station wagons and occasionally working with a pal to design, manufacture and market some cool gizmo or gadget. They weren’t called “start-ups” back then. They were just guys with good ideas, a building full of tools and machines, a list of customers and a copy machine. YOUNG SCIENTISTS Fulton Science Academy’s robotics team “Control+Alt+Delete” had a strong weekend at the First Lego League (FLL) Regional Robotics Championships, taking home both the First Place Champion’s Award and the Best Overall Robot Performance Award. The results of the weekend competition were exciting, but the fact that the awards were secured by the school’s first all-female robotics team made it even more special. More than 32,000 FLL teams compete in robotics competitions like this one annually, very few of which are comprised of only female students. The FLL challenges kids in more than 80 countries to think like scientists and engineers. Students were expected to address the problem and propose a solution using detailed research, presentation materials, and the creation of a prototype. They also had to build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the competition’s Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams had to operate under the FIRST LEGO League signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism®. Control+Alt+Delete decided to tackle this project by researching a more natural way to eliminate mosquitos without using pesticides because pesticides have been linked to adverse health effects including brain tumors.

MAYORAL CANDIDATES SPEAK One of Atlanta’s more influential leadership groups had scheduled an aggressive start of the 2017 Mayor’s race. The Buckhead Coalition arranged to introduce the eight announced candidates it has graded as creditable at this time. This nonprofit association of 100 invited CEO-type business leaders operates the Better Community Political Action Committee (BC PAC) to address City of Atlanta nonpartisan contests of Mayor, City Council, and Board of Education every four years. This kick-off of the Mayor’s competition took place at the Coalition’s Annual Meeting. The “Conversation” with these individuals included questions of Peter Aman, Keisha Bottoms, Vincent Fort, Kwanza Hall, Ceasar Mitchell, Mary Norwood, Michael Sterling, and Cathy Woolard, conducted by Rickey Bevington of Georgia Public Broadcasting and Denis O’Hayer of Atlanta Public Broadcasting. The attendance at this yearly program attracts local elected officials, representatives of major news media, and management of area civic organizations, together with the noted business heads. Normally the Coalition, in its 29th year of community service, engages nationally - - or internationally - - features prominent keynote speakers, but has reasoned that starting the process of “selecting the new administration for Atlanta will be the most important issue facing us” from now to November, as stated by Coalition president Sam Massell (a former mayor of Atlanta).

CRAFT COUNCIL Adrina Richard, a ceramics artist based in Brookhaven (adrinaearthworks.com), is one of 26 Georgia and more than 250 nationwide artists whose work has been selected by the American Craft Council for its juried show, March 17-19, at the Cobb Galleria Centre. Sears, 44, is a Georgia Registered Landscape Architect and company president who developed his expertise thanks to his Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University. Adding that to more than a decade of work experience in Georgia, and the result is Sears virtually becoming a property owner's Wizard of Oz. Sears also holds a Commercial GC [General Contractors] license with the state of Georgia, "which makes me more qualified than any of my competition to implement our designs," Sears says. "From a knowledge, licensing and liability standpoint, many folks don't realize that hiring a 'landscaper' isn't the same as a licensed GC that handles the electrical, plumbing, utilities, and other elements of a big outdoor pavilion and kitchen near a pool. With so many services to offer, Sears notes that there are certainly some challenges to carrying out a project—especially an extravagant one—from beginning to end. "We meet for an hour or two on site, review your 'program,' the goals and objectives, and discuss the best options," Sears explains. "Sometimes small sketches are all that's needed for a few hundred dollars, or sometimes it takes several thousand for detailed plans. We help you understand the permitting issues, limitations and pitfalls, and of course, look for opportunities to create as wonderful an environment as you can invest." He continues, "The devil is always in the details, and we help you understand if your ideas are going to be feasible within your budget. We have smaller residential projects from $15,000 to larger ones well over $100,000. Some of our commercial or larger client projects have been over $1 million." Selecting one his favorite renovations of late, Sears made arrangements to share with us the backyard of a home nestled in a Brookhaven neighborhood just off Ashford Dunwoody Road he recently renovated. Opening the door of a high wooden fence secluding the half-acre backyard from street view, a multi-purpose sports court with weatherproof VersaCourt f looring and a glass basketball backboard immediately catches the eyes. Sears recounts, "This used to be only a lot of trees, but once I met with the homeowners, they said they wanted something for their teenage boys to play in; this was the result and they love it." Of course, the parents had to have their entertainment as well, so Sears added a raised deck complete with a Big Green Egg cooking station, and a Zen-inspired section complete with a private waterfall and a stone-lined stream to cleverly direct rainwater from an adjacent home elevated on a hill. It's overall an exclusive escape from the bustling city life friends and family can enjoy all year long.

Emphasizing why this particular property hits close to home, Sears says, "Water features and fireplaces are of course common, but sport courts are a fun, new twist. Having three boys myself—plus actively coaching sports—we see the need for companies that can not only build great usable environments, but have them all tie together, look great for the adults, and still be functional for the kids." Keeping a fresh outlook on what clients may want, Sears loves globetrotting whenever possible to get more inspiration. He has been to Europe, the West Indies, Canada, Mexico, and just returned from a trip to Montana; loving what he saw in the latter, Sears says he is now looking for an opportunity to insert some rustic wood and elk antlers in a future development. "I love to work with the local elements for a 'sense of place' so to speak, but we try to tailor and customize our work to the clients' desires, ultimately," he says. approachable. Abbey was introduced to her grandmother’s 1940’s Singer sewing machine at the age of 9. The middle child of two accomplished doctors, left brain always came before right, but Abbey continued to experiment with garment construction and design in her time. After endorsement by Jane Fonda’s GCAPP foundation and encouragement from her art teachers, the Atlanta native began her formal fashion education at Central Saint Martin’s at 18. Before graduating from Rhode Island School of Design, with a degree in Apparel Design, Abbey had the opportunity to work under Marc Jacobs and Francisco Costa at Calvin Klein Collection. She was a finalist in the Supima Design Competition runway show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in September 2012, which kickstarted her career. Abbey and her team now work out of a Buckhead studio complete with a full-service atelier and boutique-style showroom. Here are a few of our favorite pieces from her spring book. This gin is one of my favorites, an impressive rich and smooth pour. Handcrafted Southern Dry Gin from Old Fourth Distillery is

distilled from organic Italian wheat and vapor infused with fresh botanicals: juniper berries from nearby Oakland Cemetery, grapefruit, lemon & orange peel, followed by cardamom, pink peppercorn, angelica root and coriander. Also on tap is Old Fourth Distillery Handcrafted Southern Vodka. They start with regionally grown sugar cane, a minimally refined turbinado. It is non-GMO, renewable, environmentally sound, gluten and pesticide free. Because they are located in an urban area they needed something we could convert to alcohol with no waste. New this year is Lawn Dart. Old Fourth Distillery created this limited edition ginger lemon liqueur from locally sourced ingredients for a slightly sweet, unbelievably refreshing spirit. Best served chilled and shaken. Old Fourth Distillery was started by childhood friends who decided to open Atlanta's first distillery since 1906, taking a neighborhood-centric, sustainable approach to creating the finest spirits available at any price. O4D uses sustainable non-GMO sugar cane to make its vodka, requiring less energy and creating zero waste. O4D's only byproduct is pure, distilled water. Their cane sugar base and hands-on approach creates a naturally gluten-free vodka with a soft, round mouthfeel and a subtle caramelized sugar aroma. Every bottle of O4D is made by hand in their 1100-squarefoot distillery in the Old Fourth Ward. Three people create the fermentations, do the distillations, bottle, and package every drop of the signature vodka and gin. O4D uses a custom, handmade CARL copper still.
