My home is full of our collections of books, vintage games, ancient Chinese checkerboards and cool old gumball machines. One of my favorite pieces of furniture is an antique Chinese trousseau cabinet we picked up when we lived in Hong Kong. The merchant explained that the bride's family would pack her personal items and collected home furnishings in this cabinet and her brothers would carry it to the happy couple's new home. We use it as a bar cabinet storing glassware and booze...perhaps my own personal trousseau?

Meet 21 year old Deonte Brown, trained by retired world champion and women's boxing hall of fame inductee Terri Moss at Buckhead Fight Club. On July 1 Deonte won his pro debut with a unanimous decision over Stephon McIntyre, a fighter with veteran experience.Deonte brings the excitement of athleticism, slick boxing style and southpaw stance to the ring which combine to create trouble for his opponents. After an amateur career that included Georgia Golden Gloves and Title World Championship wins, Deonte is focused on his professional career. He devotes 6 days a week to training, at least four hours a day. Training includes bag work, mitts, circuit training, and calisthenics every day. Away from the gym, Deonte is a family man, enjoying time with his son and daughter, reading in the library and spending time with his friends. BuckheadFightClub.com

Beginning with the Pop Art movement, a prevalent cultural misunderstanding promoted the mistaken notion that new and visionary ideas belong only to the young. The truth is, as artists age the chances increase for brilliant new expressions with a marked richness in their art. The premise of the “40 over 40” invitational exhibit is to show that fresh ideas and talent come from people of all ages, and that artists with decades of life experience have even more to offer. "40 over 40" presents works by Atlanta–area artists age 40 and over, whose careers range from newly discovered to seasoned. Under the curatorial efforts of Elyse Defoor of Buckhead, the exhibit offers fresh counterbalance to the art-world ageism faced by many artists during their later years. "When considering the impressive art made by famous older artists later in life such as Georgia O’Keeffe, and the many wellknown mature contemporary artists such as Kara Walker, Anish Kapoor, and 100 year-old Carmen Herrera, this show champions artists who continue to take risks, explore, and do the work that they are meant to do,” says curator Defoor.

the world. Since its inception in 1993, the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest (KDC) has become a coveted win in the professional home design category. The contest recognizes designers, architects, interior designers, builders and remodelers for advancing outstanding kitchen design. Sub-Zero Group, SE is proud to announce two of the finalists are top designers in Atlanta: Joel Kelly and Matthew Quinn. Both Joel and Matthew are past KDC winners. Divided into categories, the contest honors three first and second place global winners in contemporary, transitional and traditional, and for a first-time entrant, small spaces, outdoor kitchen and student. The judges choose the top 25 entrants who go on to a final judging for the winners. In 2015/2016, 1,500 entries from 24 countries participated. The 25 finalists represent a diverse mix of design aesthetics from six states within the United States and six countries outside of the United States. Joel Kelly Design was founded in 1998. Located in Peachtree Hills, the company focuses primarily on residential and interior design. Joel is a successful designer with multiple talents and a flare for unique design inspired by details and memories from his mother and grandfather. Jeffrey Baker is a Buckhead architect who believes in modern

design as a lifestyle and recently completed a project on Hopkins Terrace in Lavista Park. “We find the majority of our clients own companies or are executives with extensive demands so when they finally get home they need low maintenance, ergonomic spaces that help them relax,” he says. This builder’s home has five bedrooms over nearly 7,000 sq. ft. on a half acre. The home is tucked into the hillside, wrapping around a serene courtyard and pool terrace. The lower level boasts a theater room, in-law apartment and gallery space linking two unique monumental staircases. The entire home being open and modern is really warmed by the use of industrial and reclaimed materials, says Baker who also designed and custom made many of the furnishings. “The owners have a great love for the style and the design is truly a reflection of them.” In addition to custom pieces by Baker, other elements were collected from vintage finds with antique Oushak rugs, and select To the Trade lines, including McGuire, Baker and Stickley. One of the unique furnishings is the beam in an iron saddle that creates a floating console in the dining room. This beam is structural, a salute to their town home in Manhattan. The designer also used 4’ x 12’ sliding doors along the front of the home with frameless glass guardrails held in front of them, creating his version of a modern Juliet balcony. Baker and his team believe great modern design should embody low maintenance and durable materials, ergonomic design decisions, environmentally healthy technologies, passive design, and spaces that promote creativity. 26 BuckHavenLifestyle.com | November 2017
