LIFESTYLE LETTER
Style Starts Within There’s something special about watching someone create. Maybe it’s a student transforming thrifted clothing into a runway masterpiece. A craftsman preparing a wall long before the first coat of paint goes on. Or someone discovering that taking better care of themselves can change how they feel walking out the door. At first glance, these stories seem completely different. They’re not. They all remind us that style is about far more than appearance. It’s about intention. In this month’s issue, you’ll meet students from Standley Lake High School who proved that creativity, collaboration, and sustainability can go hand in hand. You’ll see how Paint Denver has built its reputation by earning trust long before the final brushstroke. And you’ll join me as I step outside my comfort zone to experience Hammer & Nails, where I discovered that self-care isn’t about vanity— it’s about showing up as your best. As I reflected on these stories, one theme kept resurfacing. The things that leave the greatest impression are often the ones we never see. The preparation before the performance. The craftsmanship behind the finished product. The confidence that comes from expressing who you are. The small, intentional choices that shape how we live, work, and serve others every day. That’s what great style really is. It isn’t defined by the latest trend or the biggest budget. It’s reflected in the care we bring to our homes, our work, our relationships, and ourselves. I hope this issue inspires you to look a little deeper. Support a local business. Encourage a young creator. Try something new. You may discover that the best transformations don’t happen all at once—they happen one intentional choice at a time. Thank you for inviting Broomfield Lifestyle into your home each month. It’s our privilege to tell the stories of the remarkable people and businesses that make this community such an incredible place to live. I think you’re going to enjoy this one. See you around town. The Details Behind Every Professional Finish When most homeowners think about a fresh coat of paint, they picture the finished result—a beautiful new color, crisp lines, and walls that look brand new. What they rarely see is everything that happens before the first brushstroke. For Rob Peterson, owner of Paint Denver, that's where the true difference between a professional paint job and a simple coat of paint begins. "It's all about people, not paint," he says. "Service creates an experience. It matters how it looks, but it also matters how people feel during and after the project." Some homeowners are preparing to sell. Others are catching up on long overdue maintenance. Some people simply want to transform the feel of a space with a new color. Whatever brings a homeowner to Paint Denver, the team's first priority is understanding their needs and delivering the right solution. "We want to know the people and the problem they're trying to solve," he explains. "That helps us recommend the best solution, not just the fastest or cheapest one." That philosophy shapes every step of Paint Denver's process. From the initial consultation to the final walkthrough, every detail is documented, every expectation is discussed, and communication remains a priority from beginning to end.

"It's all about keeping promises," he says. "We've built our business around taking care of people and solving problems since 2009." That commitment is one reason Paint Denver has earned the trust of repeat clients like Rachel Mark with LIV Sotheby's International Realty, a company that has relied on Paint Denver for more than a decade. "If we can get on their schedule, that's who we pick," Rachel says. "Customer service outweighs cost every time, and the level of customer service with Paint Denver is unmatched." Working in Denver's luxury real estate market, timelines are often tight, and expectations are high. After years of working with Paint Denver, she says they've become her first call. Rachel believes the difference is noticeable from the very beginning. Once a homeowner decides to move forward, the experience continues with the same level of care. Office Manager Andy guides clients, ensuring that all details are known before anything gets started. This sometimes includes coordinating with a color consultant to help choose the perfect color—often one of the most intimidating parts of the project. Before work begins, their Project Manager, Natalia, conducts a thorough walkthrough, and the team remains involved throughout every stage of the job. Before the final invoice is ever sent, Paint Denver follows up to ensure every expectation has been met and that the homeowner is completely satisfied with the finished result. "We're there from start to finish," Rob says. While homeowners admire the finished work, professionals know that real craftsmanship happens before the job starts. Details and preparation are what transforms paint into a finish that lasts. Surfaces must be protected. Walls must be cleaned. Cracks must be caulked. Imperfections must be repaired. Exterior surfaces must be scraped and primed to ensure proper adhesion. Every step works together to create smooth finishes, crisp lines, and long-term durability as well as the basis for great relationships and trusted partnerships.

"It's really all about the prep," Rob says. "In order for the paint job to look its best, the prep work has to be done." Skipping these steps may save time, but it often sacrifices quality. For Rob, preparation isn't simply another task on the checklist—it's what separates professional craftsmanship from a weekend DIY project. One of the most common questions homeowners ask is why painting estimates can vary so dramatically. According to Rob, the answer isn't simply labor or materials. It's trust. "There are a wide variety of companies out there," he says. "Craftsmanship takes time, and a reputation isn't built overnight." Rather than relying on high-pressure sales tactics or upselling warranties, Paint Denver focuses on helping homeowners make the best decision for their needs—even if that decision doesn't involve hiring them. "We're going to recommend the best solution, even if we're not it." For homeowners evaluating contractors, Rob believes the most important question isn't, Who's the cheapest? It’s who do I trust inside my home? Painting is unique among home improvement projects because crews spend days working inside someone's most personal space. "It's invasive," Rob says. "We want to make it as comfortable as possible." That experience begins with communication. Before work starts, every detail is confirmed so there are no surprises. Throughout the project, homeowners know what to expect, who to contact, and how the project is progressing. The consistency comes from the people behind the work. Paint Denver's crews average nearly ten years with the company. In an industry known for turnover, that kind of longevity is rare, and something Rob takes tremendous pride in. "I've watched them buy homes and grow as people," he says. "I know exactly what our clients are getting when our crews walk into their homes."
20
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | LO CAL SE RVICE S
Rachel has shared that trust with Paint Denver on countless projects. "As a real estate company, we often work on very tight timelines," Rachel explains. "They always help us stay on schedule, and I never have to follow up with them over and over just to find out what's happening. They communicate so well that very little is ever missed." While the communication stands out, so does the craftsmanship. Rather than simply covering imperfections, Rachel says the Paint Denver team focuses on creating a seamless, finished look that complements the quality of the home. "They care," she says. "They don't just patch over a hole. They want ever ything to look uniform. We work in the luxur y market, and their f inished product always feels elevated. Their color matching is spot on, and the qualit y of their workmanship is outstanding." That attention to detail has earned something even more valuable than repeat business. It has earned trust. Because of that,
"I would absolutely recommend Paint Denver to my clients, my friends, and my family," Rachel says. "I trust them completely, and I genuinely want people to experience the level of service they provide." Beautiful walls are only part of a successful project. For Rob, success is measured by something much more meaningful. "When we finish a job, if our clients actively seek to promote us, then we've done our job," he says. "If they feel anything less than that, we've fallen short." His hope isn't simply that homeowners enjoy the new color. He wants them to remember how they felt throughout the entire experience. Because in the end, a professional paint job isn't defined by flawless lines or premium products alone. It's defined by the trust built along the way, the promises that are kept, and the peace of mind that comes from inviting the right people into your home.

FROM THRIFT STORE TO RUNWAY
The excitement and energy were palpable. In the Standley Lake High School auditorium, music filled the room as cheerleaders entertained the crowd and students packed the seats. Meanwhile, the real energy pulsed backstage. Student designers and models were furiously making last-minute adjustments, checking accessories and putting the finishing touches on the one-of-a-kind looks. Nearby, the student coordinator called out the order of the runway pairings, making sure each designer and model were ready for the moment that was months in the making. And then, it was silent. The cued music began. One by one, the student designers and models rocked into the auditorium like they were in a New York fashion show, as classmates, teachers and members of the media erupted in cheers and applause. For the audience, it was an entertaining fashion show. For the students, it represented months of creativity, collaboration and problem-solving, with multiple lessons learned along the way that reached beyond fashion.

STANDLEY LAKE STUDENTS SHOW THAT SUSTAINABLE FASHION NEVER GOES OUT OF STYLE
Last spring, students in Standley Lake High School's Fashion Design program partnered with Plato's Closet Westminster to showcase that style doesn't have to come from brand-new clothing. Led by Fashion Design Educator Danielle McCracken and partnered with Plato's Closet Westminster owner Char Magee, the hands-on project challenged students to create, market and produce a fashion show using only secondhand clothing. After selecting garments from Plato's Closet Westminster, each team was required to reinvent every piece using repurposed materials, tying into the theme of sustainability. Throughout the school year, students had explored personal style, created mood boards, studied color palettes and body shapes, and learned the fundamentals of fashion design. By the time they visited Plato’s Closet Westminster to choose pre‑owned clothing, they were ready to put those skills into action. Students sketched concepts, developed timelines, chose construction techniques and transformed ordinary garments into original runway designs. Every step, from garment construction to marketing and event production, required creativity, collaboration and problem-solving while proving that great design comes from imagination.
The finished looks reflected each student's personality, creativity and resourcefulness. One group combined three dresses into a single design. Another group turned a pair of flared jeans upside down, repositioning the pockets to create a dramatic wide-leg silhouette. A third shortened a sequined top, then reused the leftover sequins to embellish a pair of kitten heels. "The dress was amazing, and the jeans surprised the heck out of me," Danielle said with a laugh. While the reimagining of the clothing was one part of the project, another part was to show the students how reusing and reimagining garments can shape both style and impact. That shift in perspective connects directly to the role thrifting has long played for teens: a way to express individuality while discovering the deeper value behind their choices. “Thrifting probably came before the consciousness of the environmental benefits of it," Char said. "Thrifting has always been a way for teens to express their unique styles. Being a teen is a time of discovery and development, and clothing is an important part of that." She believes social media has helped today's students connect those fashion choices with a larger purpose. "Once they realize that their actions actually have consequences, this age group in particular is very inspired to do better," she said. Danielle has watched that shift happen firsthand. Rather than settling for what's on store shelves, many students want clothing that reflects their individuality. "The students aren’t finding the fashions that they want on the market," she said. Instead, they'll thrift a pair of jeans, spend a few hours modifying them, and end up with something completely their own. "They can thrift it for cheaper and end up with exactly what they want rather than settling for something that isn’t really what they want." That shift in thinking gives Char hope that evolution represents more than a passing trend. "I feel like the younger generation is role models in our society right now," she said. "They're seeing the issues, and they're able to do something about it." CONTINUED >

Rather than asking students to solve enormous environmental challenges overnight, Char hopes they recognize the value of everyday decisions. While the environmental challenges facing the apparel industry are enormous, Char hopes they recognize the value of daily decisions. "When something feels overwhelmingly big, you have to dial it back to what smaller daily choices can make a difference. That's what I'm seeing with today's thrifting trends," she said. Choosing a used item, repurposing something already in the closet or simply buying less are all steps in the right direction. "You're making small choices, and all of those add up. So the key is not to get overwhelmed by the giant problem." She smiled before adding perhaps the project's simplest takeaway. "At the end of the day, fashion should be fun. This generation is leading the charge while enjoying a really fun process of creation."
26
M UST SE E | STYL E + BEAU T Y
While the project's message centered on sustainability, its success was equally about collaboration and preparing students for life beyond high school. The project became what Danielle called "the perfect bridge" between classroom skills and real-world experience. That bridge formed when Char approached her with an idea: connect students’ learning to a local business while giving them an authentic look at the fashion industry. Together, they shaped a partnership that pushed students to think like professionals and explore the possibilities of sustainable fashion. Danielle immediately saw the educational value. "This is exactly what higher education is striving to do across the nation," she said. "They want students to have experiential learning opportunities where they're applying what they've learned in the classroom."
Students stepped into roles that mirrored those found throughout the fashion industry. Designers created garments, while models brought those designs to life. Other students handled marketing, photography, event planning and production management, gaining firsthand experience with the many moving parts of a fashion show. For Char, that real-world experience was one of the project's greatest successes. “I wanted them to see what it’s like to work with a small business and understand that the skills they’re learning have value outside the classroom,” she said. “If we can make an impact in our community while giving students that experience, that’s a win for everyone.” As the applause faded and the final models left the runway, the impact of the project was already extending beyond the students who participated. Danielle overheard comments from previous students asking, "Why didn't we get to do that last year?" Meanwhile, other students left inspired, saying, "I'm going to take fashion because that was so cool." CONTINUED >
“USING THRIFTED CLOTHING IS SUSTAINABLE AND UNIQUE.” — BODOR YUNES S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B R O O M F I E L D

Student Perspectives: Creativity, Confidence and Purpose Best friends outside the classroom, designer Bodor Yunes and model Donnie Dunn collaborated on an outfit inspired by Balenciaga and Vivienne Westwood. The resulting look fused punk and high fashion: a black RIT‑dyed polo reworked with plaid skull‑and‑crossbones appliqués, flannel cuff accents and white hand embroidery, paired with reconstructed jeans featuring a pleated replacement leg and a sagged, Balenciaga‑style waistband and finished with Donnie’s Doc Martens. Bodor was excited about using thrifted clothing, which made her vision cooler and let her use the material to its fullest potential. "Using thrifted clothing is not only sustainable but makes clothes look so much more unique," Bodor said. Having always enjoyed making and altering clothing, the project only strengthened that passion. "This gives me more motivation to do and create more." The creative process wasn't always easy. Bodor spent hours reworking garments, adapting ideas as the project evolved and even breaking multiple sewing machine needles while stitching together layers of denim. But seeing the finished design on the runway made every challenge worthwhile. "It has truly given me the boost I need to use my creative skills more in clothing and in the way I express myself through fashion," Bodor said. For model Donnie, the experience meant stepping well outside his comfort zone. "It was really nerve-wracking stepping out into my entire school and seeing the sea of faces," he said. "The message behind why we were doing what we did was much more important than my nerves, though." Donnie, whose wardrobe already includes mostly thrifted clothing, said the project reinforced the idea that fashion is about personal expression rather than buying something new. "Seeing my classmates string together ideas to create outfits was personally so inspiring," he said. "Maybe our work here could inspire many others to go toward thrifted clothing and to stray away from fast fashion." Bodor hopes people took away multiple messages, including that everyone should care for the environment and planet because it is everything around us. She urges others to make their own clothing and have an outlet to express themselves through the creative art that is fashion. Both students walked away with more than new sewing and design skills. They left with a deeper appreciation for creativity, confidence and the idea that clothing can tell a story. As Bodor put it, "Fashion means expression... a language of the people."

Those comments were proof that a project centered on creativity, collaboration and sustainability had inspired other students to see fashion, and perhaps the choices they make every day, in a new way.

IN M E N’S GR OOM ING WHY LUXURY GROOMING IS BECOMING LESS ABOUT INDULGENCE AND MORE ABOUT CONFIDENCE.

I tried something new recently. I’m not one to get pampered. At 46, I can count on one hand the number of massages I’ve had—and every one was with my wife on vacation. Luxury has always felt reserved for resorts, not everyday life. So when I heard Hammer & Nails (H&N) was coming to Broomfield, I was curious. Is there really a market for elevated grooming designed for men? We already have plenty of places to get a haircut. Some even offer a drink. What could make this different? CONTINUED >
“For years, men saw self-care as unmasculine. That’s changing. More men realize caring for themselves isn’t vanity—it’s part of living well.” - Matt Sewell S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B R O O M F I E L D

As it turns out, quite a bit. “We can get a haircut anywhere,” says Matt Sewell, who owns Hammer & Nails with his wife, Sarah. “Why not come somewhere you can enjoy a luxury experience and be treated like family? We want everyone to feel completely welcome and comfortable.” That’s exactly what I found. For my first visit, I booked the Milk & Honey Signature Duo. I’d never had professional hand or foot care, so I had no idea what to expect. Matt greeted me by name and offered beer, wine, or a non-alcoholic drink. I chose a Malbec and settled into the lounge.

“Men don’t have many places where they can be seen, known, and receive exceptional personalized care,” Matt said. “Creating a place where they can relax, connect, and become part of a community—that’s what inspired us to bring Hammer & Nails to Broomfield.” A few minutes later, Britney led me to the hand and foot lounge. Leather chairs, custom artwork, warm lighting, and televisions created something between an upscale theater and a polished man cave. It felt masculine, calm, and inviting. Britney explained the service, offered headphones and a remote, and prepared the foot soak. I skipped the television
and started a conversation. She answered my questions, shared at-home care tips, and made what could have felt awkward seem natural. The Milk & Honey Signature Duo includes a coconut milk and honey soak, sugar scrub, massage, callus treatment, nail care, paraffin therapy, and hot towels. It wasn’t simply relaxing—it was restorative. About halfway through, Matt stopped by to check on me and offer a refill on my wine. We talked about how attitudes toward men’s grooming have changed. “For a long time, men viewed self-care as something that wasn’t masculine,” he said. “That’s changing. More men are

realizing that taking care of themselves isn’t vanity—it’s part of living well.” According to H&N member Travis Williams, “Masculinity and good grooming go hand in hand. Every inch of this place emphasizes both, with a touch of class. I have been looking for something like this for a long time.” The memberships felt equally intentional. Classic offers a better, less-rushed haircut. Signature adds time to relax. LUXE creates a monthly reset. Different men can choose what self-care looks like for them. Hammer & Nails goes beyond haircuts, beard trims, and straight-razor shaves. Skin care, hand and foot services, and a hospitality-first approach allow men to be cared for from head to toe. But the real difference isn’t the service menu. It’s how the experience makes you feel. “Your hands and feet are your tools,” Matt told me. “You need to take care of them. The Hammer & Nails experience begins and ends with hospitality. We don’t just want you leaving looking better—we want you relaxed, refreshed, and ready to take on life with confidence.”
Confidence. That word stayed with me. This wasn’t only about grooming. It was about giving men permission to slow down, recharge, and care for themselves without feeling like they had to explain it. “Men walk in for the first time and are surprised a place like this exists,” Sarah says. “Giving them a safe space to be themselves and care for themselves has a real impact on their mental well-being.” My visit ended with a warm paraffin wax treatment. It felt unexpectedly luxurious, but by then, luxury no longer seemed like the point. The point was intention. A lot of men spend more time maintaining their cars or lawns than themselves. Hammer & Nails is changing that by making elevated men’s care feel natural, welcoming, and worthwhile. And while I’m still hesitant to say I got a “mani-pedi,” I can tell you this: My experience at H&N was fantastic, and my hands and feet have never felt better. Maybe taking care of yourself isn’t an indulgence after all. Maybe it’s simply the new standard.
