“Daddy, is it Christmas yet?”
At this age, our daughters have many questions… and they seem to revolve around what they want and might get, as opposed to what they can give, haha!
There are many values that Sarah and I work hard to instill in our children, and the spirit of giving is one of them. A quick Google search about Christmas traditions will bring up all sorts of inter esting details about the origins of Santa Claus and holiday shopping, amongst other things, but there is one common Christmas thread throughout all of it: giving.
In honor of the spirit of the season, City Lifestyle has launched the Giving Campaign for the third year running. This growing effort to bless individuals and families during the holidays has been a huge success, and all we are asking for you to do is nominate someone you know who could use a little help.
In this issue, you’ll find a couple of stories highlighting the impact of the Giving Campaign on people affected by some of the hardest circumstances life can offer, including a life-threatening cancer diagnosis.
“This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.
So please join us in taking action! Who do you know and are willing to nominate to be blessed through the Giving Campaign this year? Nominations are open now through December 10th. Nominating is easy and confidential. Just scan the QR code in the Giving Campaign story on page 12. A few minutes on your part can have a lasting impact on someone you care about.

U.S. House Representative Brittany Pettersen visited Beautiful Savior Lutheran School to discuss Colorado’s childcare crisis and met with Director Sonya Acker, who expressed gratitude for ARPA’s support, which stabilized the center. Pettersen, who personally faced childcare challenges, listened to Acker’s concerns about funding shortages and educator scarcity. Acker remains hopeful that future legislation will help. Pettersen is actively pushing for federal bills like the Child Care Infrastructure Act to address these ongoing issues and improve childcare access statewide.
Colorado Puppy Rescue received $500 from the annual NOCO Window Cleaning Fundraiser!
NOCO Window Cleaning’s annual birthday fundraiser began as a tribute to the founder’s late grandmother, Melissa. Each year, they choose a new charity to support. This year’s recipient, Colorado Puppy Rescue, was selected by a randomly chosen participant who had adopted a puppy, “Chip,” from the shelter. Through apparel sales, NOCO raised $500 for the third consecutive year, with the donation going toward food, vet care, and supplies to support rescued puppies.
“My daughter has taken her car in several times and the staff is always super patient and good at explaining issues. Always on time and professional. Been using 5th Gear for many years and I’m never disappointed. I will continue using 5th Gear for all my automotive needs!”
JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org

THE HEART AND HUMOR BEHIND THE SEASON FROM A FEW OF OUR NOTABLE NEIGHBORS
The holidays bring out the best (and funniest) in us! We reached out to some notable neighbors—from rabbis to high school students to community leaders—who shared their heartfelt and humorous holiday moments. From flour-dusted donuts to doll-head lamps, these responses remind us that the season isn’t just about gifts but about family, faith, and the unique traditions that make each celebration truly memorable. Grab a mug of cocoa and enjoy!
Broomfield FISH Food and Family Resource Center Executive Director
DO YOU HAVE A HOLIDAY TRADITION THAT YOU FIND A BIT SILLY?
One of my silliest (and favorite) traditions that developed organically is my obsession with ugly gravy boats—bet you thought I’d say sweaters! Every year, we dig out the ugliest one for the table, and it never fails to get everyone laughing. It’s a little ridiculous, but it’s now part of our holiday charm!
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL RECIPE THAT HOLDS SENTIMENTAL VALUE FOR YOU DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
My mom’s cheesy butter noodles! We’d bake together every holiday, and these homemade noodles became the ultimate comfort food. They’re so good, they’ve completely ruined boxed mac and cheese for me!
WHAT’S THE MOST MEANINGFUL GIFT YOU’VE EVER GIVEN OR RECEIVED?
I made a family storybook for my mom, filled with hilarious childhood memories. It’s been passed down to the grandkids, keeping our family tales alive and creating laughter for the next generation.

HAVE YOU EVER RE-GIFTED SOMETHING?
Absolutely! You know those shake weights? That has been passed around as a joke for quite some time now!
WHAT’S THE WORST HOLIDAY GIFT YOU’VE EVER RECEIVED?
A doll head lamp. It may be a Halloween decoration now!
WHAT’S THE MOST MEANINGFUL GIFT YOU’VE EVER GIVEN OR RECEIVED?
The most meaningful gift I’ve ever received is an ornament my grandma bought over 20 years ago during a family reunion in Breckenridge. It’s hand-painted with the church where my husband and I later exchanged vows. My grandma passed away before meeting him, but the Christmas after our wedding, my mom found the ornament and gave it to us. In that small, precious moment, it felt like my grandma was with us. Now, each year as we hang it on our tree, it’s as if she’s celebrating right alongside us.

HAVE YOU EVER RE-GIFTED SOMETHING?
Yup. Always!
DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL RECIPE THAT HOLDS SENTIMENTAL VALUE FOR YOU DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
Ever since we could wield a measuring cup, my sister and I would make apple pie out of our mom’s ancient “Joy of Cooking” book for Christmas Eve.
WHAT’S THE MOST MEANINGFUL GIFT YOU’VE EVER GIVEN OR RECEIVED?
Words are my love language (shocking for a writer, I know). My studly husband of 15 years recently gave me a journal in which he writes to me sweet birthday, Mother’s Day, and anniversary letters, so I won’t lose all his thoughtful sentiments. I absolutely LOVE it!
HOW HAS YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE HOLIDAYS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS AFTER BECOMING A PARENT?
It’s shifted from just presents and fun as a kid to making awesome memories and keeping the focus on the sweetness and power of God.

“Smiling is my favorite!”
WHAT HOLIDAY TRADITION WILL YOU HANG ON TO FOR YOUR FUTURE FAMILY?
Every Christmas Eve, my family has a tradition of going bowling, and it’s one I’d love to carry on with my future family. It’s such a fun way to kick off the holiday, bringing everyone together for a little laughter and friendly competition!
WHAT HOLIDAY FOOD DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO?
Every Christmas morning, my family makes caramel cinnamon rolls. It’s extra special since it’s the only time we have them! I always call dibs on the middle roll—it’s the gooiest and most delicious!
Chabad Jewish Center of Broomfield Rabbi and Co - Director
WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED AT YOUR FAMILY’S HANUKKAH CELEBRATION?
One year, my mom accidentally dusted the donuts with flour instead of powdered sugar. Let’s just say, the first bite was... unexpectedly dry! We all had a good laugh—and ended up with flour everywhere!
WHAT VALUES DO YOU THINK ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO PASS DOWN THROUGH YOUR HANUKKAH TRADITIONS?
One of the most important values to pass down is the idea that even a small light can dispel much darkness. This goes beyond the Jewish community; it’s about humanity coming together to share hope and kindness. Each candle we light reminds us of our power to make a positive impact. By passing down these traditions, we inspire future generations to spread light, lift each other up, and build a more compassionate and united world.
Rotary Club of Broomfield President Board Member: Broomfield Chamber & FRIENDS of Broomfield
WHAT HOLIDAY TRADITION FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD DO YOU CHERISH THE MOST?
Growing up in the southern hemisphere, we enjoyed a summer Christmas, starting with church, a beachside braai, and eagerly returning home for my mom’s once-ayear Christmas pudding!
HOW DO YOU FIND JOY IN THE MIDST OF HOLIDAY STRESS?
I find joy by recognizing that our definition of “stress” pales in comparison to true hardship. Real stress is not knowing where your next meal will come from or choosing between food and medication. I combat it by expressing gratitude for our many blessings.
HOW HAVE YOUR HOLIDAY TRADITIONS CHANGED SINCE BECOMING A PARENT?
Since becoming a parent, we’ve focused on the true meaning of Christmas by using the Jesse Tree and lighting Advent candles to add reverence beyond just gifts. We prioritize giving back, whether through ringing bells for the Salvation Army or stocking food at Broomfield FISH.

As the holiday season draws near, balancing celebration with remembrance of lost loved ones can be a delicate journey. According to Kelsi Mathews of In Memoriam, acknowledging and honoring our grief is an essential part of keeping loved ones close in heart and spirit. Here, Kelsi shares several meaningful ways to create lasting tributes during this emotional season.
One powerful way to honor a loved one is through acts of kindness, like donating to a cherished charity or volunteering together as a family. “Putting tangible energy into your grief can create meaning and comfort during the holiday season,” Kelsi says. Additionally, gifting a sentimental item that once belonged to the departed can bring an extra sense of connection in a time filled with commercial messages.
Setting a place at the dinner table or incorporating a loved one's favorite flower can also offer gentle reminders of their presence. “Having an empty chair acknowledges that even though they’re gone, they’re not forgotten,” Kelsi explains. Taking a moment of silence for them before the festivities begin can give families a quiet space for reflection.
For families experiencing heightened grief, Kelsi advises, “Recognize the big space that grief takes up, and don’t pressure yourself to feel ‘okay.’” Embracing traditions in new ways, such as visiting a favorite spot or sharing stories, can add layers of warmth and healing.
Ultimately, Kelsi reminds us that the holidays are a season where joy and sadness can coexist. Creating space for both celebration and remembrance allows families to honor their loved ones with openness, grace, and support.

BUNN & SONS CUSTOM BUILDERS HELPS CREATE CHERISHED HOLIDAY MEMORIES
“I MAGINE YOUR FAMILY, GATHERED AROUND A BEAUTIFUL, SPACIOUS KITCHEN ISLAND NEXT HOLIDAY SEASON.”
Some of my most cherished memories come from holidays spent in my grandparent’s farmhouse kitchen. One Christmas, a winter storm knocked out power across the area, and our home became a gathering place for relatives because we had a wood stove and gas oven. The gifts are long forgotten, but the warmth of family sharing food, laughter, and stories remains vivid.
Back then, holiday gatherings took place in cozy, often crowded rooms where we made do with the space we had. My grandma’s tiny farmhouse kitchen worked magic during Christmas Eve dinners, but I imagine how much easier it would’ve been
with today’s open layouts—a large island where everyone could gather, updated appliances, maybe even a dishwasher to save us from drying by hand. Modern kitchens make it possible to entertain without the hassle, and a welcoming space can make hosting a true joy.
Today, Bunn and Sons Custom Builders, led by Tom Bunn, know how to create the perfect holiday-ready home. "Before you start a remodel, think about why you want this change," Tom, a former Marine, advises. "If your goal is to make space for family gatherings, let that vision guide your design." Tom and
his full-service team take a collaborative approach, helping clients bring dreams to life. He adds, "Keep that picture of the finished product in mind. It's what will get you through the mess and inconvenience of the transformation." Tom's experience brings wisdom to every step of the process.
Imagine your family gathered around a beautiful, spacious kitchen island next holiday season. It’s not just a remodeled kitchen; it’s a space for memories—laughing over cookies, sharing holiday meals and building traditions that are passed on to the next generation.
Maybe I’m weird, but I don’t have any “online shopping” memories. But pass me some eggnog and Christmas cookies, get the Monopoly board set up, and the Christmas reminiscing could go on long enough to keep Santa from shooting down the chimney until next year. Many of those memories would include Christmas shopping adventures.
Christmas shopping of my youth involved a trip to the old Westminster Mall (any locals here remember the giant balloons that would rise and fall with a hypnotic rhythm?). There were guaranteed stops at K-Mart, SEARS, JC Penny, KB Toys, and lunch at McDonald’s. We were on the hunt for all sorts of goodies, and Mom kept track of things with an envelope that had a shopping list written on it, coupons and ads neatly folded inside. I always thought that was pretty smart.
Cyber Monday can’t replace the lights, music, displays, and wonderful aromas of cinnamon, bread, and other holiday treats. A line to see Santa seemed to go on for miles, but for a 7-year-old kid, it was well worth the wait.
There’s nothing memorable about tapping “Buy Now” on a mobile device. But there is something special about the joy, laughter, fun, and quality time spent with people you cherish when you go out together on an adventure to show your love and appreciation for one another through the timeless tradition of gift-giving.
So here’s a big holiday “THANK YOU” to the kind folks at Larkridge Shopping Center in Thornton. They bring a festive blend of retailers, restaurants, entertainment, lifestyle services, and living options to energize your holiday spirit. Why not plan a few hours to enjoy a visit to the shopping center and see what you can find?
And, call me crazy, but would it be a bad idea to keep the phone turned off and in your pocket, be where your feet are, fully appreciating the moment?
Whatever you do, I invite you to be intentional about making some memories. I encourage you to slow down, take a breath, and make it an unforgettable experience. Don’t forget to plan a stop at Santa’s House! (See the back cover of this issue for more details on that!)
