First, I have to thank my beautiful wife, Sarah Schierkolk. Back in 2021, she took a leap of faith right alongside me. She didn’t just support this dream—she helped build it. As our Publication Director, Editorial Coordinator, and Staff Photographer, she poured countless hours, endless creativity, and a whole lot of heart into every issue.
This year brought an exciting new chapter as Sarah accepted the role of Membership Director for the Broomfield Area Chamber. While our day-to-day roles have changed, her impact on this publication will always be part of its story.
That also means I get to extend a huge welcome to our new Editorial Coordinator, Kassie Hueckstaedt! Kassie, I promise to dedicate as much effort to spelling your last name correctly as I’ve spent learning my own over the years. I’m excited for what we’ll create together!

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

At EmpowerPups, healing begins with a relationship—one that transforms both ends of the leash.

That simple statement sums up the philosophy of EmpowerPups by Hero's Puppy for Life, a locally based service dog training organization that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Founded by veteran and Purple Heart recipient Frank Griggs, EmpowerPups helps others through a relationship-based training approach rooted in trust, connection and healing.
Frank spent much of his life searching for his purpose, a journey that began on his 19th birthday in Vietnam when he lost several fellow Marines in an attack near the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Frank returned home carrying the weight of survivor’s guilt and PTSD. Decades later, he found his purpose in what began as a one-time goal of providing a service dog to a fellow veteran through the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
That effort set Frank on an unexpected path. Faced with the high cost of professional dog training, he became certified in canine training and behavior, developed his own training program called the Frank Griggs Relationship Bond Training and brought home an English Golden Retriever puppy named Bo, who would become his service
dog. Together, those experiences laid the foundation for EmpowerPups. Over the past 10 years, the organization has grown into a community that has graduated 116 service dogs for veterans and has expanded its work to help first responders and individuals living with disabilities.
Frank’s philosophy is that service dogs aren't trained for people—they're trained with them. In fact, he believes so strongly in the relationship between a dog and its owner that he wrote a book called A Relationship That Trains a Dog , based on the training program he developed.
The training process begins long before formal training. During the first weeks together, a pup and its owner focus on bonding, allowing the pup to learn its person's routines, emotions and needs while the person learns to trust the dog.
That was certainly the case with Daisy Mae, an English Golden Retriever who when she was eight

weeks old, came to live with veteran Sherry Jones. “During those first few weeks, we spend time with the pup and love on them. At first, I assumed there would be a lot of specifics right out of the gate. So, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, what have I gotten myself into? What do I do now?’” she laughs. “But I realized it was our time to bond. Daisy Mae was learning our smells and our home, and we were learning about her.”
After that initial bonding period, the formal training begins with Frank's in-person training, reinforced by online training resources designed to strengthen the recipient's understanding. The training encourages participants to use the word "yes" frequently, which helps shift their
mindset toward possibility and optimism. According to an expert Frank consulted, repeatedly affirming positive actions and experiences may even help rebuild neural pathways affected by trauma over time, so using this positive philosophy in training also helps the person move forward.
Socialization is another tenet of both training and healing. Rather than keeping recipients isolated while they train, Frank encourages them to take their puppies into stores and other public places early on. The dog becomes both a companion and a bridge to the outside world, giving people a reason to get out, interact with others and rebuild their confidence. “With veterans in particular, it’s easy just to recluse. You
don’t always want to get out and deal with people and things.” Sherry said. “Having Daisy Mae with me as a distraction is very helpful. Although sometimes I don’t want the extra attention, I’ve realized the people who approach you are drawn to you for the same reasons. It's always a niceness, always a good spirit and a good energy.”
And it’s during these outings when extraordinary things can happen.
“Oftentimes, Daisy Mae will pick someone out of a crowd, and she'll pull me over to that person so she can lean into them,” Sherry said. “I’ll apologize, and the person will say, ‘You don’t know how much I needed this today.’ It's really cool to witness, because she's very in tune with people. I just tell them, ‘Daisy knows.’ I just let her have her moment with them. I've had people cry to us. It's really awesome to know that she makes a difference in so many lives, not just mine.”
Frank has witnessed or heard about similar moments that demonstrate the ripple effect dogs can have during public outings. In one case, Bo repeatedly gravitated toward a veteran, lying down on his feet. The veteran eventually sought medical attention and discovered he had cancer.
In another example, Frank shared a story about a veteran’s service dog who persistently pulled toward a stranger in a restaurant. The veteran said, “Ma’am, I don’t know why, but my dog really needs to see you.” The woman started loving on the dog and began crying. The man asked if she was OK, and she responded, “I was just diagnosed with cancer today.”
These encounters perfectly illustrate what Frank has long believed: dogs possess an extraordinary ability to sense when people need comfort, companionship and support the most, often before anyone else recognizes it. Sherry has experienced that connection firsthand.
Daisy Mae helps Sherry recognize emotions before they become overwhelming, nudging her toward awareness and grounding her in the present. “I think she has trained me more than I've trained her,” Sherry said. “She has taught me so much about myself.”
This connection between dog and human can be profoundly healing. And that, Frank believes, is the real goal. EmpowerPups is not simply about producing well-trained service dogs. It’s about helping people build trust, rediscover confidence and reconnect with life through the human-canine bond.
“We’re more than just training dogs,” Frank said. “We help save lives.”

FROM FLOSSING TO FIGHTING SUGAR BUGS, OUR LOCAL DENTIST SHARES HOW KIDS CAN BECOME HEROES OF THEIR OWN HEALTHY SMILES.
Epic battles in which good triumphs over evil delight people of all ages. But most parents prefer not to wage war every night when the battle ground is the bathroom sink, and our enemy appears to be the stubborn toddler refusing to brush their teeth. We face teeth-brushing tantrums, hapless hide-and-seek sagas, and night-time negotiations ending in stalemates and stale breath.

As a mom to three kids, all with different feelings about dental hygiene, I was delighted to interview Dr. Dominic Italia, owner of Broomfield Premier Dentistry. Dr. Dom’s warmth, humor, and practical wisdom encouraged and enlightened me. I walked away equipped with some new ways to turn the tide of battle away from me, and toward the real nemesis of our children’s dental health: the sneaky sugar-loving bacteria that cause cavities.
Here are a few myths Dr. Dom helped bust so our kids can be the heroes of their own dental health.
Myth #1: Baby teeth are just practice teeth, so it’s fine to put the baby to bed with a Ring Pop and a bottle of Mountain Dew!
Not true.
“Baby teeth are incredibly important,” says Dr. Dom. “They act as placeholders for adult teeth, help children chew properly, and support speech development. Good dental habits start early.”
In other words, those tiny teeth matter more than many parents realize.
Myth #2: My kid can wait for his first visit to the dentist when he has a full mouth of teeth and a beard.
Nope.
“A child should visit the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months after their first tooth erupts,” shares Dr. Dom. “This allows the child time to get used to the environment and to become comfortable having someone examine their teeth.. It also introduces and normalizes healthy dental habits early on.”
Myth #3: Juice is harmless compared to soda. Unfortunately, no.
“Juice is surprisingly comparable to soda when it comes to cavity formation,” Dr. Dom explains. “Sugar feeds bacteria, which then produce acid that gradually wears away tooth enamel.”
He also warns against letting babies or toddlers fall asleep with milk bottles. Milk contains sugar too, and overnight exposure can cause serious damage.
A better routine? Finish the bottle, then brush before bed.
Myth #4: Brushing is enough — flossing can wait. This one surprised me.
“If I were stranded on a desert island and could choose only one, I’d take floss over a toothbrush,” says Dr. Dom. “Most cavities happen between teeth, where toothbrushes can’t reach.”
Confession: before this interview, I wasn’t making my own kids floss regularly. It's just one more thing on the bedtime to-do list. However, Dr. Dom suggests starting small by flossing one weekday evening and one weekend night. The habit grows naturally over time.
Dr. Italia’s advice for raising tiny dental superheroes?
• Turn brushing into a game.
• Brush alongside your children.
• Let them help brush your teeth.
• Focus on consistency, not perfection.
Parenting already requires enough daily negotiations. If we can make dental care fun, consistent, and empowering, maybe our kids will learn to fight the real enemy themselves.

Guys Who Give is a group of men with a desire to inspire and who are committed to making a difference in their local communities. This mission is accomplished by finding 100+ men to each contribute $100 at the quarterly events to benefit a chosen local charity. The idea is to keep it local and have an impact that WE can SEE.
