Since launching Broomfield Lifestyle in 2021, I have been transitioning from a full-time SAHM to a full-time working mom, helping create this beautiful publication each month, capturing supportive photos for our editorials and meeting so many influential women in our community! One of those remarkable women invited me to 100 Women Who Care, a community of women who join together to collectively support non-profits in Broomfield. They are like magicians, turning $100 donations into thousands of dollars by harnessing the power of the group, in just 1 hour. Mind-blowing!

Meet Broomfield Chamber Member Lyndsey Cumberland of Farmers Insurance! Recently, a homeowner called Lyndsey after his former insurance company refused to renew his policy. When people come together with a shared goal and sense of purpose, amazing things can happen. That's the idea behind the Broomfield chapter of 100 Women Who Care, a group of local women who are making a big impact for our Broomfield community.
Simple yet powerful, the concept ignited in the town of Jackson, Michigan in 2006 from an off hand comment exposing a simple need - baby cribs.
Karen Dunigan, the founder of 100 Women Who Care was attending a lunch when she learned about a need regarding portable cribs. Details were shared about new mothers bringing their babies home from the hospital and placing the sleeping infants in boxes, dresser drawers, or on their own beds because they could not afford a proper crib. Some of these babies didn’t survive the night.
Karen couldn’t stop thinking about these moms and their infants and knew there had to be a way to meet the need. She had an idea. Already heavily involved in the community, Karen brought her friends together and shared the story about the need for portable cribs. She asked each person to write a $100 check, and raised over $12,000 in one afternoon. It was in this concept that 100 Women Who Care was born.
The organization blossomed significantly with chapters launching across the country, including one right here in Broomfield, founded in 2019 by a group of local non-profits.
Kim Weber and Helaine Bader serve as co-chairs for the group and are both passionate advocates for the power of community and the importance of giving back. Their leadership and involvement are a CONTINUED >
natural extension of their own personal commitments to community service, anchored in a strong belief in the power of collective giving and the impact it can have on local charities. Instrumental in guiding the group and ensuring that it remains focused on its mission, their passion and commitment have inspired other women in the community to get involved and make a difference.
The group's success is due in large part to the incredible support of its steering committee. This special group of 13 women volunteer tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that meetings are fun, welcoming, that they run smoothly, and donations are collected and distributed quickly. Their hard work and dedication have helped to make the Broomfield chapter of 100 Women Who Care a shining example of what can be achieved when compassionate, like-minded women come together for a common cause.
The Broomfield chapter's partnership with The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation has also been a key multiplier in their giving. Dick Schulze, the founder of Best Buy, Inc., created this family foundation in 2004 with the intent of giving back to the communities across the country that helped him build the success of Best Buy stores. Connection with this Foundation offers a matching grant opportunity of up to $5,000 to the non-profit organizations nominated and selected to receive donations, allowing the Broomfield Chapter of 100 Women Who Care to make an even bigger donation, above what they were already doing on their own.
One of the things that makes 100 Women Who Care so powerful is the simplicity of the concept. The group meets quarterly. At each meeting, members are given the opportunity to nominate a local non-profit organization that they feel deserves support. Once all nominations are received, three charities are randomly selected from the pool. The members who nominate the selected charities are given the opportunity to speak briefly about these organizations and why they deserve support. After the presentations, the members of the group vote on which charity to support.
Once a charity is chosen, each member directly donates $100 to the chosen organization. If the group has 100 members, this means that the chosen charity will receive a donation of $10,000 from the members and an additional $5000 from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. The entire process takes just one hour, making it an easy way to support local organizations.

The influence of the Broomfield Chapter of 100 Women Who Care is evident in the stories of the local charities they have supported. At their very first meeting in 2019 with 53 women in attendance, the group donated $5,300 to The Refuge Cafe, a mission center planted in Broomfield, whose values include serving and advocating for people in need, especially those who have been forgotten, oppressed or marginalized, welcoming everyone with love, dignity, and hospitality. The donation allowed the installation of a mobile shower for the unhoused. Still in use today, the center has been able to make the shower permanent, expand their hours and include laundry services.
In 2022, the Broomfield Chapter of 100 Women Who Care continued their support of local charities by donating funds to the Broomfield Cares Outreach Team, receiving a total of $15,000 which included a matched grant from The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation of $5,000. This organization provides outreach and support to the community’s unhoused individuals and families. The funds donated by 100 Women Who Care were used to provide housing, food, and other critical services to those in need.
ADDITIONAL RECIPIENTS INCLUDE: Be The Gift - providing practical assistance to single mom home owners in need of home repair. Their goal is to ensure a safe and healthy home environment for single mom families and to improve their quality of life - $10,135!
Broomfield Buddies - bringing together members of the community and non-profit organizations to come alongside schools and support children’s social, emotional, and mental health - $9,200!
Anchor House - more than just an apartment building. It is a retreat, a safe place to call a temporary home for youth who have experienced foster care - $15,060!
It doesn’t stop there. The list gets longer, the impact even greater. Since the group's inception in 2019, members have donated $164,790, and with the matching grant from the Schulze Family Foundation, the total is $228,690 and it is all local!
In addition to the powerful financial support provided to local charities, the Broomfield Chapter of 100 Women Who Care offers space for members to connect with like-minded individuals. The group provides a sense of community and belonging. Join them. The next meeting of the Broomfield chapter of 100 Women Who Care will be on August 22nd, 2023. Women who are interested in learning more about the group and getting involved are encouraged to attend, with no obligation. It's an excellent opportunity to connect with other women who are passionate about making a difference supporting local non-profits while creating a local culture of generosity and philanthropy that makes our Broomfield community so special.

Barbara Larson wants her clients to get the most out of their lives. It’s why she asks each of them the same question: “What do you want to accomplish with the money you have?”
Whether it’s a retirement home, an aroundthe-world adventure, or helping a family member attend college, Larson and her team want to make it happen for their clients.
With her business, Larson Wealth Planners — which she co-owns with her daughter Brittany Larson and her daughter-in-law Hope Todt — Larson focuses heavily on financial and wealth planning, investment management, and legacy planning.
It’s a shift from the firm’s earliest days, focusing on tax preparation in the mid-1990s. Barbara’s clients helped her see that she could offer them much more than tax help. Once, she recalls, she had a tax client tell her that she cried when her financial planner said she couldn’t take a vacation with the assets she had.
Barbara, who is both a certified public accountant (CPA) and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, says, “At the time I shared an office space with another accountant and financial planner who said to me, ‘Why are you letting this opportunity go? You can provide these services to your clients as well.’”
She decided she would pursue future-focused approaches for individuals, couples and their families that had potential for meaningful, long-term outcomes.

from business dog-in-residence Scout — rely on their vast financial experience and deep care to make sure each client reaches the potential they envision for themselves — and more. They are eager to talk about life over a cup of coffee while offering thoughtful advice.
“People have worked hard all their lives for the money they’ve made,” says Brittany. “Our goal with planning is really helping clients accomplish what they want now that they’re retired — or if they are near retirement, helping them retire with confidence.”
Many of their clients are women seeking financial guidance for their retirement years, says Barbara.
“The financial planning world is still very much a boys club,” she says. “Oftentimes, women having other women to talk to and relate to makes it an easier transition when they’re going through something in their life — whether it's divorce, death of their spouse, retirement, or just inheriting money.”
The trio also helps couples plan for their potential future as singles if the other dies.
Barbara recalls a couple who approached them about taking out the husband’s pension. Despite his excellent health, Barbara recommended a life insurance plan for his wife so she’d be financially secure if he passed away suddenly. They did as she advised.
“He passed away 18 months later,” says Barbara. “If he had just gone to someone who was only looking at the retirement side of things, his wife would have been out of luck. That’s why looking at the full picture is so important.”
The 31-year-old firm, currently located on East 1st Avenue in Broomfield, will move to a new office in early June near Burbank Street and West 6th Ave. There, the women are excited to welcome clients as they always have — with professionalism and intention.
“We’re really looking for clients who are invested in the bigger picture,” says Brittany.
But there’s also plenty of fun at the heart of their work, too.
“One gentleman came in recently and had inherited some money,” said Brittany. “He said, ‘My family has never taken a vacation over spring break.’ We said, ‘Please go on vacation!’”
There are no surprises in their wealth management processes, the trio insist.
“We have an ongoing relationship with our clients,” says Hope. “It’s all about building the relationship and helping them through those stages so they can enjoy themselves versus worrying about that next step.”
For many, that step can bring years of fulfillment and promise. Says Brittany: “Watching your clients retire and seeing them do everything they dreamed of, that’s way more rewarding than telling them that they owe money on their tax return.”

Three hair Pro's at Image Studios, a professional space for mini-salon owners, shared their thoughts on all things hair for women in every season of life. Sydney Mittlestadt and Tasha Herrera of A Great Hair Day share a double suite at Image Studios. “We wanted to work together and have more of a community feel— plus we can bounce ideas off each other, and our clients get to chat together,” explained Tasha. Christen Gill of Epic Hair enjoys the space as she can give her clients the one-onone attention that she can’t do in a bigger salon. “It’s a more relaxing experience because it’s quiet, and you can have more in-depth conversations without people overhearing.”
The pro's had several ideas. “Put some dry shampoo in your hair and let it dry—brush your teeth or do something else while you’re waiting—and then brush your hair. The dry shampoo will soak up the oil in your hair,” said Sydney.
“If you do end up with white film from the dry shampoo, blow dry through it—blow drying will get the dry shampoo through your hair and give your hair more body.”
All the pro's recommended embracing the messy bun. “Just brush your hair into a bun and spray it with hair spray,” said Christen. “I even sleep in a bun, and it looks great in the morning!”
Braids are another idea. Tasha added, “And remember—there’s nothing wrong with a hat!”
HOW CAN BUSY MOMS MAXIMIZE THEIR TIME AT A SALON?
Tasha suggested, “Bring your partner and kids, and you can all get your hair done together. This approach saves time, checks the boxes and eliminates the mom guilt!” With a double space and refreshments, everyone can be contained and entertained.
For moms with some grays, Christen recommends a relatively new service called 10-minute color. It’s a permanent hair color that covers up those pesky gray hairs. “The service takes about an hour total, but it only processes for 10 minutes,” Christen explained. “Moms can get in and out more quickly than full color. You can get the service whenever your grays start bugging you— usually about 4-6 weeks, since your hair grows a half-inch every month.”
AND WHERE CAN YOU START IF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT A DIFFERENT TYPE OF HAIR COLOR?
Try a peekaboo hair color, which is a color that’s applied to your bottom layer of hair, so the color “peeks” out. Sydney also recommended a temporary color treatment that fades in six weeks.
“People wanted a lower maintenance cut and color,” said Christen. “For example, root shadowing—a darker color on your roots and lighter on the rest—is trendy and low maintenance, and you only need to do it every six months or so.”
Christen’s favorite styling tip is to use heatless curling rods. “It’s so easy. Put them in a night when your hair is damp—not wet—and you’ll wake up to beautiful curls. You can even do it in the morning—just mist your hair with a tiny bit of water and roll it up.”
Sydney had a great tip for workouts: put dry shampoo in your hair before you work out to absorb the oil while you work out, and then brush it afterward.
All three pro's cringed as they said their number one NOT to do is to sleep with wet hair! Finally, they all offer a consultation before you do anything to your hair, and they’re passionate about educating their clients about hair. After all, as Tasha said, “Your hair is your crown that you don’t get to take off.”

“I’m here for the heavy,” shares the stylish Broomfield native. Kelsi Mathews loves letting people unburden themselves, and tells them, “Lay it on me!” As the owner, funeral director, and embalmer of In Memoriam Funeral Parlour and Crematory, Kelsi gets plenty of opportunities to hold weighty burdens for others. Instead of shying away from loss, Kelsi and her husband, Santiago, see death as a part of life: a part that must be met with tenderness, compassion, and comfort. Being one of the few female owners in the funerary industry, Kelsi uniquely offers those qualities. The mother of two radiates peace and affection when talking about her clients. Kelsi clearly loves serving her neighbors during times of grief and sees it as her life’s calling. “It’s what I eat, breathe and live. I was put here for this!” Kelsi declares.
People hold the dearest place in Mrs. Mathews’ life, and she believes understanding others’ stories is vital. “I love knowing why they are the way they are and especially how they met their significant other!” Kelsi met her own husband, who hails from Argentina, while in Mortuary Science school. Being fascinated by the TV series CSI, she initially pursued crime scene investigation. However, when an opportunity came up to be closer to home and earn a Mortuary Science degree, Kelsi took it. She began funeral directing for a small, family-owned company at age 20. When a large corporation bought the funeral home Kelsi decided to open her own shop. Helping each individual feel like their only client motivates the Mathews to press through the challenges of owning a business.
Though balancing work and family stretches all parents, the Mathews excel at passing on their values to their two children. Lola (8) and Antonio (4) see each client as a unique person and seem to be as comfortable around death as they are playing on a beach. Luckily, their grandparents live near beaches around the globe. While visiting one grandmother in Playa del Carmen, Lola and Antonio run their own ice cream stand, fully in Spanish. Kelsi herself navigates Spanish well, though Santiago assists most of their Spanish-speaking families at the funeral home. Kelsi’s language facility and her love of oceans might entice her to move to Uruguay someday. However, her other passion, coffee, would draw her to Seattle. So whether you’re in the mood for some laughs over a cup of hot Starbucks, or need compassionate care while grieving the loss of a loved one, you’ll be delighted by what you find in Kelsi Mathews.
