Lori appreciates that volunteering has taught her daughters responsibility and not to waste. The most fulfilling part for Lori is the camaraderie she gets from spending time with the other vol unteers. It is a fun social time that goes by quickly, all while doing important work for the organization. Lori’s home was destroyed in the Marshall Fire, and after the kids went back to school in January, she realized how much she was looking forward to volunteering again.

The COVID-19 Pandemic not only shed a light on how many people were strug gling with food insecurity, but it also gave families an opportunity to volunteer that may not have had the free time before.
In March of 2020, when BVSD tran sitioned to online learning, Lori saw her daughters sitting in front of the computer all day for school, and wanted to find a way to get everyone out of the house after school. They initially decided to volunteer to get away from the screens, but what they found was so much more.

Lori shares, “I had helped out at a soup kitchen with my kids when they were much younger, and that experience stuck with me. We started volunteering with Community Food Share during COVID, and even after my kids went back to school, I stayed with it.”

“I felt like a fish out of water. Being able to go back to volunteering was some thing I had done before the fire, and to have a sense of normalcy was powerful and gave me time to not think about the fire. Everyone was so supportive, asking how they can help, when we were there to help others.”
Lori Smith and her daughters are one of the families that discovered volunteering in March of 2020, and found it was a great way to avoid social isolation while help ing those in need.
Lori began volunteering with her daughters at Community Food Share, a food bank fighting hunger in Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Frankie Ryder, Marketing and Communications Manager, shares, “We provide fresh, nutritious food to more than 40 local partners and serve thousands of neighbors each year through our onsite and mobile pantries. Hunger is an invisible problem in our community. The pandemic helped showcase how many people were just one paycheck away from a financial crisis. Now the high costs of gas and groceries are bringing people back to their local food banks.”

Three of these professionals from Image Studios have shared a bit of their passions and flare with us and give their perspectives when it comes to finding one’s own style. Riley Rodgers, a cosmetologist and owner of The Golden Cut, likes to be fluid with her style, depend ing on mood and what the day brings. She may take on a bohemian cottage core look one day and motor cycle grunge the next.
In terms of style, each professional has the free dom to be expressive and unique- something quite important for any artistic and creative mind.
Ivonne’s personal style is also very natural and relaxed, and she believes feeling comfortable in your own skin is important. Her talent, however, speaks loudly. With a portfolio of countless nail shapes, col ors and designs, she can certainly adapt to just about any client’s requests.
She says a blended look is one of the most common requests these days, where natural grays and silvers are meshed with another natural looking color, rather than covering them completely. The more adventurous type might also ask for a bright pink or purple block to make the silver or gray pop.
“Most classic, timeless cuts are in, but I also love when clients opt for something new, edgy and self-reflective,” Rachel admits.
Ivonne Rodriguez expresses herself through nail art, and has been for 14 years. Her new studio space is named Me Time Nail Salon, which she describes as modern with a touch of elegance. The neutral paint on the walls are contrasted with dark, bold lettering and floral detail, with a few simple bursts of color in the furniture and decor.
Curious about what is up-to-date chic in the nail industry? First, think almond and round nail shapes, and nude base colors. From here, the styles get expo nentially more out of the box. Crystals, charms, and decals are all very common, as are 3D flowers and encapsulated glitter and foil. With so many options to explore, there is no wrong way to begin a new nail style journey. Ivonne’s advice? “Try it! If you don’t love it, we can always change it or go a different route the next time.”
Maybe your hands and feet are in need of some pam pering. When asked to build his “perfect meal” based on La Distileria’s menu, Isaac chooses to start with a beef quesabirriasimilar to a quesadilla but folded like a taco and served with both au jus and salsa.

Isaac Gonzales grew up in Mexico City and immigrated to the US at the age of 19. He was a professional techy-turned-foodie, managing an Italian restaurant and then running one of his own - Delvickios- for a decade.
The change of the pace of life and economic landscape caused Gonzales to start thinking of what the next chapter in his professional life would bring. This reflection materialized as a journey to switch gears and rediscover his roots. He spent months in Mexico City, Oaxaca, and many other locales, finding a new appreciation for the different cultures and, more to the point, culinary specialties. Gonzales returned from his travels renewed and ready to rebrand. A new Latin fusion concept had emerged, and La Distileria was born. It opened its doors in the fall of 2021, inspiring a love of its thoughtfully-planned menu within the community.
Think simple, fresh Latin fare. La Distileria’s menu is simple yet all-en compassing. Its goal is to introduce new cuisine to the area that will bring patrons back again and again. You’ll find tradi tional Mexican dishes like street tacos and enchiladas, and a mole negro that Gonzales was quick to promote as being the best around.
A variety of fresh salsa selections were created to take each entree selection to the next level, rounding out the full Latin fusion effect.
From there your options expand geo graphically, by the way of Peruvian cev iche, Argentinian-inspired empanadas, and Puerto Rican sweet plantains on the starter menu.
You’ll walk into an open floor plan and Oaxacan vibe, with tasteful pops of color, including papel picado banners and wall art. “Oaxaca is the source of so much his tory and origination,” says Gonzales. “The style encompases much of what Latin cul ture brings to the table.” A large community table was built in the center of the space to invite large family or friend groups, or the mid-afternoon business crowds, who also have access to USB outlets at the table and bar.
A set of retractable doors opens to a large patio area with capacity for roughly 50 additional guests. You’ll find a sep arate bar located outside and a variety of local beers on draft, including those from Wonderland Brewery, Rails End Beer Company, and Industrial Revolution Brewing Company. After all, this is Colorado and we know our beer!
In the future, La Distileria plans to start distilling its own Mexican tequila in the large barrels you’ll find in the dining room.

Many people might think that they can mitigate sequence of returns risk by reducing or eliminating equity holdings in portfolios. But this compromises the upside potential that equities can provide and may lead to running out of money quicker. Portfolios with higher allocations to equities have typically outperformed, because downside volatility in the U.S. equity markets has historically been rela tively short-lived. Past performance is not a guarantee of future returns.
We’ll dive a little deeper to further illustrate this point. Let’s say the initial investment was $100,000 with $4,000 in annual withdrawals increasing 3% each year for inflation*.
