LIFESTYLE LETTER
“Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s party!’” As we start grooming our yards to prepare new growth, remove our covers on the deck furniture and sweep away the winter muck (or that last snow fall), take a moment to kick back and relax with a fresh PARK mule and read the Ladies’ Issue. As you flip through the pages, you will find all things women! Spas and services, local gift ideas, mom’s day out and even influential women of Broomfield. I hope you take the time to get to know a few women here in Broomfield that have made an impact in our community and how, why and who influenced them. Broomfield is full of inspirational women. From women-owned businesses to women in leadership, we are truly amongst their beauty. As a mom myself, now’s the time I start the seasonal clothes rotation for my growing kids (winter clothes out, summer clothes in) and start planning our summer vacations. But before taking off on that much needed road trip, be sure to read up on your auto coverage! The last thing you need while in the middle of the Rockies, is to be stranded on the side of the road with a hangry toddler (and husband), no snacks and the family pup! Like the late Robin Williams said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s party!’” So may your spring bring a new look on life, a new adventure or a new friend. But most importantly, may this season of newness bring your heart joy, gratefulness and love. Cheers friends! Blessings to you and yours,

A LOCAL GEM OFFERING MORE THAN WHAT IS ON THE SHELVES.
The PARK Wine & Spirits, at 11410 Via Varra in Broomfield, has made its mark since its doors opened in May of 2020. You’ll find a selection of both local libations and brands that even out-of-towners will recognize. The shop also features a beautifully built tasting bar that serves up beer, wine & spirits samples from 4-7pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Owner Mari Ann James has shared a classic cocktail recipe (with a few variations!) that is just as light and refreshing as our Colorado sunshine.
THE PARK MULE INGREDIENTS • Felene Coconut-Lime flavored vodka • Ice • Ginger beer (Mari Ann’s go-to is Cock & Bull for its strong ginger flavor, but you also can’t go wrong with the Fever Tree or Goslings brands!) • Fresh lime
DIRECTIONS 1. Fill copper mug with ice, then add 2 oz. vodka 2. Top with ginger beer and squeeze in half of a lime. Go ahead and toss that lime right into your mug! 3. Enjoy and unwind

MULE VA R I AT I O N S The copper mug is a must, as it increases the carbonation from the ginger beer, and boosts both aroma and the flavor profile from the vodka or spirit substitute • Mexican mule: sub vodka for tequila • Kentucky mule: use your favorite bourbon instead of vodka • Gin-gin mule: muddle a few mint leaves with simple syrup at the bottom; sub vodka with gin • Mocktail mule: just as delicious without the added spirits
The PARK Wine & Spirits has a welcoming atmosphere and staff in place to help enhance your experience. Mari Ann and her husband, Vince, have a great set of team members who will always greet you at the door and are happy to help make recommendations. Taylor, the James’ Sheepadoodle, can often be found doing quality control and brightening his patrons’ days. Taylor is the official PARK Wine & Spirits shop dog and HDIC- Head Dog in Charge. “Vince and I are so proud to be part of Broomfield, and grateful that we are able to live and do what we enjoy in this great community that we are fortunate enough to call home,” James says. “We look forward to helping others make memories as we provide the libations for many joyous occasions. Cheers!”

INSPIRING ROLE MODELS WHO LEAD BY EXAMPLE.
ARTICLE BY NINA BALDACCI-SLOAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
Meet a Few of Broomfield’s Most Influential Ladies
While modern day trends have made the word influencer a legitimate job function with a focus on profit, lifestyle, and politics, the word itself has been used in the English language since the mid-1600s. Holding significant meaning, old school influence was about the ability to communicate vision, ignite forward-thinking ideas, and create tangible resources to leave a legacy-level impact. We caught up with five Broomfield women who have been doing just that! Each of these ladies was influenced by women who carried the torch before them, and they have used the impact in their own lives as a catalyst. Day in and day out, most often behind the scenes, through collaboration and empowerment, they are dedicated to being a part of something bigger for the community they love.

Enea Hempelmann Broomfield Chief of Police
Immigrating from Italy as a child, and settling with her family in the Westminster area, Chief Hempelmann speaks of her mother Josephine Navarra as one of her great influencers, modeling a life of unwavering support and resiliency. Her mother was always at-the-ready to offer words of empowerment, “Get through. Be strong. You’ve got this.” In turn, Hempelmann credits her mother and her family as the support system that cultivated the leader she is today. Offering a style that leads with being human, Chief Hempelmann has committed her influence to humanize the police force, broadening the portrayal of protector and enforcer to protector, enforcer, community member, mother, father, daughter, son, and friend. Leading by example, Hempelmann recognizes everything starts in-house. If the Broomfield PD staff is well, it will translate directly to the community. As such, the action philosophy of the department centers around seven core values Hempelmann penned 10 years ago as a Sergeant: Service, Compassion, Respect, Integrity, Professionalism, Pride, and Trust. Heading up a department and staff of first responders, providing connection to these core values builds bridges when hard decisions need to be made. Chief Hempelmann’s vision for long term influence portrays the future of policing in a different way, with a focus on how the role of the department has evolved and how it can create more thoughtful and intentional ways of engaging the Broomfield community. When healthy non-profits are effectively serving their community, it thrives. And, this past year, the Broomfield community at large has responded, allowing grant funding to double. Marianna finds passion and fuels future impact through the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee, mentoring high school leaders through the realities of philanthropy, and passing the torch of charitable giving. Community Engagement Manager – Broomfield FISH Board of Directors – Broomfield Chamber of Commerce President – Broomfield Chamber Young Professionals
Honoring her family legacy, Emily Crouse-Joo embraces every opportunity to make Broomfield better. It was no surprise, when asked to name a driving influencer in her life, without hesitation she said, “Grandma Anne.” A working mom of four, Anne Crouse built a community. Emily describes her as highly effective because she was thoughtful, patient, and carried a temperament that made you want to be around her, and a part of what she was doing. Emily is a Broomfield native, working, law-school bound mother of three incredible boys. As a child she saw her future self as a lawyer engaged in social activism and community engagement. Still chasing those dreams, she finds her day-to-day passion as being a connector. It is her gift. She understands the opportunity of a simple introduction. Emily has an extraordinary talent for making friends and helping them find the connection they need to achieve their goals. For the future she sees a community opportunity for influence toward seniors. Having a huge heart for the elderly, Emily hopes to actively promote resources and an environment of kindness, compassion, and inclusion for Broomfield’s elderly.

Debbie Kunz
Executive Director – Bal Swan Children’s Center
Having been at the helm of Bal Swan Children’s Center for just over four years, Debbie Kunz is using her quiet, steady influence, faithfully advancing the organization’s mission to create a more inclusive world where all people experience a sense of belonging. Highly influenced by supervisor and mentor Allison LaMont, Debbie experienced the firsthand possibilities of empowering parents to be a child’s first and best teacher. The experience was a practical application in empathy, seeing the unique strengths in all people and meeting them where they were.
24
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE
With intention, she now chooses to see people through the lens of strength. Recognizing it is a choice to believe in others, particularly when they differ from you, she knows such discipline and restraint are the path to compassion and understanding. In her immediate circle, Debbie creates a culture of empowerment, ensuring everyone feels a sense of wholeness in themselves, just as they are. Looking to the future, Debbie, alongside her staff at Bal Swan, hope their influence creates a community with more empathy, one that can deeply connect to the respect and care of their neighbor.
Keri Dillingham
Executive Director - Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities
Keri Dillingham understands just how much art, on its own, is one of the ultimate influencers. Prepandemic, to most, art was seen as a luxury and had little impact on everyday life. In March of 2020, everything changed as isolation became the new normal. The loss of usual touch points forced people to engage with themselves (sourdough anyone?) and their community (Zoom!) with creativity! It was creativity that created connection and Keri held a solid vision for what this could mean for her community. Right person. Right time. Highly influenced by her mother’s work ethic and belief, as well as her mentor Sherill Bunetta who always believed you don’t have to be an artist yourself to support the arts in a big way, Keri worked behind the scenes to be a conduit of creativity, bringing artists and community members together in meaningful ways. The Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities creatively continued their programming through virtual storytelling, and Friday evening virtual art shows with local musicians providing the soundtrack. It stayed on point with its student art shows, igniting others to have an impact and create their own ripple effect. Keri is passionate to inspire and believes if you can get to the core of why it is you do what you do it will have a lasting impression. MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BR O O M F I E L D

SAFE TRAVELS THIS SUMMER! ARTICLE BY LINDA BOLANDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
There’s nothing like a road trip. From our well-loved national forests to amusement parks, you could travel the USA all summer and never see all our wonderful sights. But if you want to make the trip without worrying about every little thing, there are things you should do long before you lock the door behind you. “The first order of business is to review your auto insurance coverage,” says Skyler Peak, of Skyler Peak State Farm Insurance. He made a list of key coverages that you should look at, with your agent, to make sure your trip is smooth.
LIABILITY COVERAGE The Colorado State minimums on this required insurance are not always sufficient. It pays for damages you cause others, both bodily injury and property damage, but if the damages exceed your limits you may be personally responsible.
MEDICAL PAYMENTS Pays medical expenses for bodily injury sustained by a person in a car accident.
COMPREHENSIVE Pays for a car that is stolen or damaged by causes other than a collision.
COLLISION Pays for a covered car that is damaged by collision with another object.
UNINSURED/UNDERINSURED MOTORIST COVERAGE Pays for damages when an insured is injured in a car accident caused by someone who is not insured or is underinsured.
EMERGENCY ROADSIDE SERVICE Pays for emergency services, such as a tow or tire change, and much more.
28
D R IV E R’S N OT E BOOK | AUTO + MARI NE
“Always make sure you are comfortable with your deductibles. If you have a mishap on the road this is the amount you may incur to fix your vehicle.” Skyler reminds us. The team at Skyler Peak State Farm also has some pre-trip tips for families venturing out. • Check the air pressure in all tires—and don’t forget the spare! • Make sure the wiper blades are working well. • Check and replenish all fluids. • Check battery life and inspect batteries and cables. • Test headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and interior lights.
DON’T FORGET TO PACK A GOOD EMERGENCY KIT. • Jumper cables • Flashlight • Emergency flat tire repair/spare tire • Gloves, blankets and towels • Hazard triangle, road flares, brightly colored distress sign • Screwdrivers and wrenches • First aid kit and medications • Phone Charger • Water • Non-perishable foods And if you’re taking your furry friends, make sure they have good pet insurance and their own first aid kits, water and food bowls, toys, food, and strong leashes and collars. Another good idea is to have dog booties for cold or hot surfaces and make sure they are used to them before you leave—you don’t want to have to train them on their footwear while you’re on the road. Now you’re all set for the Great American Road Trip. One last piece of advice—leave some room in the car for your souvenirs!

"VISIONARY" WOMEN MEET DR. ANNE METSGER & DR. TIFFANY GATES, OWNERS OF VISIONARY EYE CARE IN BROOMFIELD
30

Dr. Metzger
According to Guidant Financial, women made up 31 percent of all owners of small businesses or franchises in 2021. Further, Forbes reports a steady increase in female entrepreneurs in healthcare industries. It makes sense; a whopping 80 percent of “women make 80% of the healthcare buying decisions in the United States.” To celebrate our Ladies Issue, Dr. Anne Metzger and Dr. Tiffany Gates, owners of Visionary Eye Care in Broomfield, tell us what it’s like to be a woman business owner in the healthcare field.
HOW HAS BEING A WOMAN HELPED YOU IN ESTABLISHING YOURSELVES IN OPTOMETRY? DR. METZGER: It helps me relate very well with parents and children of all development levels, which helps me to care for young eyes. DR. GATES: Our perspective lends to compassionate care, which is one of our core values.
Anne Metzger, RN, OD | Tiffany Gates, OD, FAAO, FSLS
Specializing in Keratoconus and Pediatric Care
WHAT CONVINCED YOU TO GO INTO EYE CARE? DR. GATES: My childhood optometrist was a family friend and always seemed happy. My dad was highly myopic and also had a stroke in his 50s. Seeing firsthand how important vision is inspired me. DR. METZGER: I had many childhood eye conditions and later discovered that eye condition affect learning. The eyes and the brain are connected and this impacted my choices in college and life.
LOCALLY OWNED OPTOMETRIC OFFICE We see all ages beginning at 6 months!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO WOMEN CONSIDERING PROFESSIONAL OPTOMETRY? DR. METZGER: The field is f lexible and versatile. We can work full or part time and easily switch back and forth. DR. GATES: Eye care is a great choice for women! We tend to work normal hours without on-call, and have holidays off.
WHAT WAS THE FUNNIEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU IN YOUR FIELD? DR. METZGER: The joke in optometry school was that if the latch on the lens case wasn’t locked, a student might drop them. Well, I did—my first day of clinical. DR. GATES: During school I worked at a clinic in downtown Los Angeles where I spoke a lot of Spanish. “Gota” means drop and “gato” means cat. A nice lady finally told me that I kept telling patients, “Okay, now I’m going to put three cats in your eyes!” Optometry is a very rewarding field for women. They help people see, treat their eye diseases, infections, and injuries. Keratoconus is Dr. Gates’ specialty, and she can restore sight for patients and greatly improve their ability to work and function in life. They also have some advice for young women considering becoming entrepreneurs. Dr. Gates says, “Become an entrepreneur if you want independence, have a passion for your field, and are ready to work hard. It’s a roller coaster ride, but it’s all worth it.” Dr. Metzger says that owning a private practice with another woman can be ideal. “We both understand work-life balance. Also, take a lot of time to decide on a location. Our current site was actually our fourth choice, but we are now convinced it’s the best. We’re excited to be here!”

Whatever happened to the 'three-legged stool' of retirement?
ARTICLE BY AARON RASK & DAVID MANLEY Have you ever heard of the “three-legged stool” of retirement? If you have, it probably was a while ago. Once considered the ideal retirement model, the three-legged stool has fallen out of favor because one of the legs-defined benefit pensions-is not as stable as it once was, and the future of Social Security is often wound up in political maneuvering in Washington. Consider the following: • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, just 51% of private sector employers offer defined contribution or defined benefit pension plans, and only 8% offer traditional defined benefit plans,(1) thereby eliminating a guaranteed source of lifetime income. • Social Security benefits replace about 40% of the average worker’s salary.(2) What’s more, the Social Security trust fund is expected to deplete its reserves by 2034 and will be able to fund approximately 77% of benefits after that.(3)

WE TREAT YOU LIKE FAMILY. Fortunately, there are ways to reinforce the third leg of the stool-retirement savings and other personal assets-so that you can still enjoy a long and fulfilling retirement. While each person’s financial circumstances are different, here are two proven funding sources you may want to consider if you need to compensate for any shortcomings: • With people living longer than ever, it’s important to make sure the money you have set aside will last the rest of your life. While Social Security provides a lifetime supply of income, it may not be enough to support your desired lifestyle. If you think you’ll need additional income and do not have a pension, a lifetime income annuity can be an excellent way to make up the difference. • Although the primary purpose of life insurance is to deliver death benefit protection, many permanent life policies accumulate cash value. If your need for protection decreases over time, you can borrow against this cash value-tax-free in most casesa nd use the money to supplement your retirement lifestyle. (Loans against your policy accrue interest and decrease the death benefit and cash value by the amount of the outstanding loan and interest.) While the three-legged stool of retirement may be a bit wobbly, the good news is that a secure future is still within reach. The main difference these days is that you will most likely have to build it yourself.

Boss Ladies INTRODUCING IMAGE STUDIOS LAFAYETTE ARTICLE BY SHAY BRASE PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA OROZCO PHOTOGRAPHY
IMAGE Studios is a place for professionals in the industries of beauty, tattoo art, massage, and overall health and wellness. The Lafayette location currently has 35 salon suites for professionals that offer services to help clients feel and look better, both inside and out. Stacy Read is the proud owner-developer of IMAGE Studios Lafayette, Denver, and Thornton. A lifelong serial entrepreneur, Stacy believes strongly in empowering small business owners, and creating a supportive space for them to realize their dreams. She says, “We create a beautiful space, with a supportive community, and our pros bring their passion and creativity. We have an intoxicating formula for success!” We had the chance to do a fun Q&A with Stacy and two of the female business owners about what has inspired their entrepreneurial spirits and contributed to their success.
WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN? Stacy Read- IMAGE Studios - the Lafayette location is open, and I am opening locations in Denver and Thornton late this summer. Meg Kruger- BlueSky Aesthetics & Longevity- I specialize in facial and neck rejuvenation, IV therapy and sexual wellness.
Ashley Newman- My business is Naturally Blonde and I specialize in blondes, balayage and lived-in color.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A BUSINESS OWNER, AND WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE? S- I have been a small business owner my entire adult life. I started with a dog day care, and moved to many other ventures, before landing on this last one, IMAGE Studios. I hope to use the skills that I have learned along the way to help others — from best practices, to avoiding mistakes that I made. M- Five years. I’ve always been a nurse and have also worked in plastic surgery, trauma and was a nurse educator. A- Four years. Before I opened my own salon, I worked for Aveda salons as a senior stylist for 7 years.
DID ANOTHER WOMAN INFLUENCE YOU ON YOUR PROFESSIONAL PATH? M- I’ve met so many inspiring and amazing women in my office. They really have created a community for me that I highly value. A- I’m constantly being inspired by women, but I’d say I was most inspired by my mom who is also a stylist and has owned salons for as long as I can remember. CONTINUED >

“We create a beautiful space, with a supportive community, and our pros bring their passion and creativity. We have an intoxicating formula for success!” WHO ARE THE MOST INSPIRING WOMEN IN YOUR LIFE? S- The most inspiring people in my life are the people who have a goal and work hard to achieve it — this is usually the very story of starting a small business. M- My grandmother. Although I never met her, I know her story of how she started her own house cleaning business to support herself. She worked hard to gain her independence and was successful at supporting both herself and her kids. A- I have three very inspiring women in my life. My mom who currently is working in upstate NY in her own salon. My mother in law was raised in France and came over to the states in her early 20s and is just such a powerhouse business woman. My sister-in-law is a nurse practitioner working in Africa with women building a clinic and teaching midwifery.
IF YOU COULD GIVE A PIECE OF ADVICE TO OUR YOUNG DAUGHTERS, WHAT WOULD IT BE? S- I tell my children to think outside of the box, think big, and use any negative energy as fuel to get to their finish line! M- My advice would be… set your boundaries with your mental and physical well-being in mind. Also, disappoint others before you disappoint yourself. It took me a long time to learn that one. A- Advice I would give young daughters would be to try everything. Take that random job because you think it sounds cool. Go on that trip because you can. Meet all the people and don’t be shy. When the time is right you’ll come across the right path for you.
