Acts of Kindness

February 2022 PUBLISHER

Justin Schierkolk | justin.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Sarah Schierkolk | sarah.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com

Gone. The word itself even feels “empty.” The Marshall fire created a void in the lives of so many families. It’s incomprehensible. But that void is being filled. In fact, it started being filled with acts of kindness just as quickly as the fire itself started. The outpouring of love has continued on, and will continue on. The help, the kindness, the generosity; the open homes, wallets, calendars, and hearts will last far longer than any fire can burn. My hope and prayer is this— that though many things lost are irreplaceable, the things that find their way into the now open space are somehow even more valuable and loved. I hope that new friendships are formed. Neighbors that didn’t know each other before the fire may now call each other “brother” or “sister.” And how about this local community? Merriam-Webster defines community as “a unified body of individuals”. That word “unified” really stands out to me, especially during times full of divisiveness and conflict. Suddenly people that may be at odds over politics and pandemics lay down their differences and lift each other up. That gives me hope. Hope that when it matters most, we still have what it takes to come together and help each other. From basic essentials to toys, money, gift cards, and food, the outpouring of generosity has been astonishing. Take Bal Swan Children’s Center for example. In addition to transforming their building into a collection center for donations, they also started building sifters to help people find valuables that may have survived the fire. Look around you. What are others doing right now to leverage their time, talent and treasure to help others? Let that inspire you. Let it move you to give and get involved. As you’re reading this month’s “Local Love” issue, let that concept manifest itself in your heart, and then into action. Ask yourself, “what can I do to support my community?” And then, take action. To anyone who might be reading this that was directly impacted by the fire, please know that your community loves you. And to the firefighters and first responders that bravely fought to save lives and property, THANK YOU! my secret bully A BALLET OF CARING, SUPPORT, AND RESOURCES ARTICLE BY LINDA BOLANDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA TIPTON PHOTOGRAPHY

The mission of Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is to “unleash individual potential and invigorate community through dance.” On February 25th CCD will bring this mission fully to bear at a free public performance of My Secret Bully, Anti-Bullying: Holistic Wellness Program. Curtain rises at 4:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium. The internet has made bullying more visible and much more dangerous. The National Bullying Prevention Center reports that 20% of students are being bullied, and 14.5% of tweens experience cyberbullying—and are 2.6 times more likely to attempt suicide than their non-victimized peers. The performance is a partnership between CCD, The Denver Young Artists Orchestra, and YouthSeen, an organization that offers social and emotional learning and support for youth and their families, especially in the LGBTQI community. This performance is inspired by the book, My Secret Bully, by Trudy Ludwig with and music for the program was composed by Florence Price, the first African-American woman to have her work performed by a major orchestra. The purpose is not to “clap back,” but to offer tools for targets to stand up for themselves and give bullies tools for building empathy and kindness. It’s also intended to empower the bystanders in a bullying situation to move past being just

an observer. A quote by Maya Angelou could have been made for this performance: “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” This performance was created in the same light as The Ugly Duckling by Robert Mills, which was performed by CCD student dancers in area schools for over 30,000 school children between 2006 and 2011. CCD credits YouthSeen with providing a deeper social and emotional wellness message, pre- and post-performance discussion materials and resources, and wellness referral contacts for My Secret Bully. Julia Wilkinson Manley, Artistic Director for CCD, says, “A great deal of passion has gone into the creation of this work. Deep thinking and feeling on the part of the dancers, insight from our collaborator and advisor Dr. Tara Jae with YouthSeen, and even a student conversation with the author have been blended into a work created with great love and care.” To experience this moving and beautiful ballet, get your free tickets at www.ccdance. org/performances. While you’re in ticket-buying mode, save the date to join the April 29th Blossom Ball Fundraiser at the Gatehouse at Lionsgate Event Center. Proceeds will support CCD’s entire community outreach and arts education programming, serving over 22,000 students annually. Please visit www.ccdance.org/blossomball for Blossom Ball tickets/information.

WHY CO-CAR?

“I received excellent results with Lindsey! She was great at listening to what I was looking to get out of CoolSculpting and came up with a very effective treatment plan. Scheduling my sessions was easy as well. I’ve already made an appointment to come back for more!” — Sarah B. The new year is a time when many of us decide to make changes to become our best selves. Many will resolve to make better choices at mealtimes and exercise more often to look and feel the way we’d like... perhaps by cutting back on sweets and wine in addition to hitting the gym a few times each week. (Does this sound familiar?) Hopefully, by February, good habits are sticking! Unfortunately, even with proper diet and exercise, some stubborn body fat refuses to go away. This fat often lingers about unsolicited in the form of love handles and muffin tops. To this end, CO-CAR is proud to be one of the first to offer CoolSculpting Elite®, the most advanced fat-freezing treatment available. CoolSculpting Elite® is a revolutionary slimming technology that uses a scientific process known as cryolipolysis to decrease the presence of the unwanted fat. Broken down, “cryo” means cold-induced, “lipo” refers to fat cells, and “lysis” is the scientific term for cell death and disposal. CoolSculpting® is a no surgery & no needles process that produces long-lasting, natural results with little to no downtime. You’ll get your life back the very next day! Why chose Colorado Center for Aesthetics & Rejuvenation? The staff at CO-CAR invites you in for a free consultation, so that you may begin personalizing a journey to your very best “resolution” self and kick those problem areas to the curb. With over 75 combined years of experience and advanced certifications, you’re in great hands.

String Time in Broomfield BAL SWAN BENEFIT CONCERT BY MICHELLE DEYOUNG, WORLD-RENOWNED OPERA SINGER

ARTICLE BY LINDA BOLANDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

What do you get when you cross world-class talent with a heart of gold and drive to give back? Ensemble Charité, founded by local Colorado resident and renowned opera singer Michelle DeYoung. Michelle started singing in her hometown of Loveland and went to college in Michigan, where she joined the choir. The director there convinced her to consider a professional career, and now she performs worldwide with prestigious orchestras and prominent conductors. Michelle says she came up with the idea of Ensemble Charité after taking conducting lessons with John Baril, music director of the Central City Opera. She felt she needed to do something good with her new-found skill.

Students of Bal Swan, inaugural benefit recipients

“My voice teacher said I could sing one concert and pay for an orphanage in Africa for a year, but I wanted to do more than sing for them,” she says. Now she hires local musicians to play concerts that she conducts—and sometimes sings and conducts at the same time—for charities chosen by her and the board of directors. Here’s how it works. She hires the musicians, chooses the music, and makes all performance arrangements. The costs usually run around $10,000, which she and the board collect from donors. This means all ticket sales go directly to the selected charity. Their first concert, to benefit Bal Swan Children’s Center of Broomfield, is called “String Time in Broomfield” on March 23rd at the Broomfield Auditorium. They will feature music by Edward Elgar, Béla Bartók, and more.

The pièce de rèsistance will be Franz Joseph Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos, a powerful work depicting the emotional turmoil of the Princess Ariadne, abandoned by her love, Theseus.* Mark your calendars now, and don’t miss the firstrate voice and conducting of Michelle DeYoung while helping one of Broomfield’s best charities. Get tickets at ensemblecharite.com Ensemble Charité is currently discussing the next concert—which will probably be this summer— so bookmark their website and stay up-to-date on all performances. Want to help more? Simply click on the donation button on the Ensemble Charité website. *Rumor had it that Haydn traded the piece for a sharp razor, but it’s more likely that he wrote it for the daughter of Prince Esterházy’s physician, Peter von Genzinger.

Life in the West Art Gallery includes artwork depicting many lifestyles found in the Western states. To some people that may include cowboys, cowgirls, American Indians, rodeos and ranch life. To others that may include watching wildlife, skiing, hiking, rafting, bicycling, walking their dogs, riding horses, hunting, off-road activities, racing, bird watching, drinking craft beers, or many other interests. Life in the West Art Gallery showcases different artists depicting these interests, in various styles of artwork. Every piece has a story behind it, and it’s always interesting to learn about what influenced or inspired each artist. Speaking of artists, here are a few you will see when visiting Life in the West Art Gallery.

edward aldrich W I LDLI F E PA I N T ER

For over 25 years, Edward Aldrich has constantly striven to create art that speaks to the wonders of the natural world as well as the sheer pleasure of painting. Aldrich is dedicated to reaching beyond the rendering of wildlife and the natural world; his belief is that conveying the inherent being of an animal is integral to his art. He paints primarily in oil and travels the world to view, sketch, and photograph his subjects.

As a business owner, you probably know everything about how your company works. But maybe not what it’s worth. If so, that might create problems in the eventual sale or transfer of your business, especially if the sale or transfer is sudden. Proper valuation of your business helps you better protect your interests and the welfare of your family and heirs; it also eases the transition. By taking the guess work out of the valuation process you can avoid disagreements between the different parties. Subsequently, valuation may help you in planning and saving taxes. Since valuation helps the IRS determine estate taxes and the tax basis for any future sale, with proper planning you may be able to put financial strategies in place that may save you money in the long run. Now, even if a sale or retirement is years away, understanding what your company is worth today can have multiple pay-offs; it’s information that can help you secure financing or make decisions on whether to expand or stay the course. Valuation serves as an important management tool that can give you insights on how to reposition your business to enhance its marketability. So how do you determine the value of your business? There are generally three approaches used to calculate a business valuation. The asset-based approach is balance sheet-focused using the difference between a company’s assets and liabilities to determine its value. The second is the market approach which values the business, based on pricing multiples derived from the sale of comparable companies. And finally there’s the income approach, which establishes a figure from capitalizing or discounting the company’s projected economic benefit stream. Remember that as your business changes so might your valuation, so be sure to keep it up-to-date. The best way to do that is to make it a standard part of your annual financial review. For instance, you can make it a habit to have your valuation reviewed by a specialist each year right before you meet with your agent to review your insurance policy. That will also help you ensure that you maintain just the right amount of insurance coverage for your business. Valuation is a simple idea but one that’s complex to execute. Certified financial experts who specialize in valuations are uniquely qualified to determine which valuation methods will deliver an accurate assessment for a given industry. They take the emotion out of the calculation but instill peace of mind. Business owners have many complicated issues that they need to navigate day in and day out. The sooner you address the needs of your business, the better off you’ll be.

4 PILLARS OF WELLNESS Kaylie & William, Founders of Live Well Dood, are turning traditional and wellness thinking on its head…and with great success! ARTICLE BY JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SEIBERT - FLATIRONS PRO MEDIA The “Standard American Diet” is flawed. Starting your morning with cereal, orange juice, and a banana is the WORST way to start your metabolism! Kaylie and William, wellness experts and founders of Live Well Dood in Lafayette, help people understand why traditional eating habits turn your body into a fat storing machine. They coach and train people to start the day with foods that turn your body into a fat burning machine instead. Nutrition is vital, but according to them, there are four pillars of wellness to keep in mind for a comprehensive “Best You” strategy:

4 PILLARS OF WELLNESS 1. HAPPINESS - Wellness should be fulfilling, not stressful! Kaylie and William meet you where you’re at! If your workouts are 45 minute walks with your friends, great! Fitness should enhance your life, not consume it. 2. INTENTION - Live Well Dood originated from the fact that their beloved doodles do everything with intention. When they wake up in the morning, they don’t mope around and hit the snooze button. They never have a bad day or feel guilty about eating a whole bone. If they get a treat, they finish it and move on. We can live this way too! Living with INTENTION, being present and having purpose for all that you are doing is crucial to success. 3. HEALTH - Everything is affected by diet and exercise. Your physical health, your mental health, your monetary health. Fitness is a force multiplier. If you are fit you generally have more confidence, optimism and better time management. Excelling at fitness doesn’t just have to be something that helps you look better naked, let it help you in your career, your networking, and your productivity. 4. SUSTAINABILITY - Use cooking hacks! Single-pan or sheet pan recipes save time. Save money with little things like making your own chicken broth. Eating healthy is no more expensive than eating how you are now. Learn to eat and exercise in a way that fits your lifestyle. Understanding the “why” behind your results helps build lifelong habits rather than continuously trying new crash diets or yo-yo programs. It’s amazing the results you can achieve getting into the gym three days a week and taking your family and dog on a walk with you!

HAPPY CLIENTS - BRIAN AND TANDEE’S STORY BRIAN: I wanted to look jacked for my Mexico vacation and my wife wanted to lose weight. We took a chance and hired Dood. For the first time as an adult, I have abs and I actually FEEL better! We signed up for a 3 month program and feel 100% confident we can now do this all on our own. We couldn’t be happier with our transformation. TANDEE: I’ve lost over 20 lbs in 3 months and I didn’t have to give up margaritas on the weekends or bottomless mimosas at brunch! Dood helped me to redefine my relationship with food and my body. I was always scared to lift weights because I didn’t want to look “bulky”. I didn’t bulk up. I did the opposite! I am more lean and toned than I have ever been in my adult life. Kaylie and William are phenomenal. Dood changed my life.
