LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year!

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Justin Schierkolk | justin.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Sarah Schierkolk | sarah.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com

This “Health & Wellness” issue has something for just about everyone. I’m excited to present to you Urban Squeeze Med Spa, Wellness, & Chiropractic Center. If rejuvenation is on your mind to get back on track after the holiday madness, then please, do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to learn more about why “self-care isn’t selfish” in our cover story. Being a parent in Broomfield is a true blessing for many reasons, including the wide range of options we have to keep our kiddos active (and entertained)! On that note, we took some time to catch up with Nina Sloan at Rocky Mountain Martial Arts Front Range, and Michael Homan of Warrior Challenge Arena. They both care deeply about the youth in our community, enough to make coaching and training our kids a central focus in their lives. While their respective methodologies may be different, they share the common goal to help kids become strong, confident, secure, and best of all, outstanding humans that seek to help and protect others. Expert dental care and mental health might fall into areas of our overall wellness that we tend not to discuss much, but these parts of our well-being play a vital role in the quality and longevity of our lives. Dr. Evan Cettie and Dr. Paul Guitirrez of Thornton Valley Dental have some valuable insights regarding dental implants.Kelsi Mathews of In Memoriam shared with us her best advice on healthy ways to manage grief, or help someone you know that may be struggling. So here’s to 2022! Please join me in welcoming the new year with a sense of optimism and gratitude. As we check in with ourselves and perhaps set some goals to become healthier, let’s also remember to encourage each other. Let’s support the wonderful community of Broomfield and the many businesses and nonprofits that we can find right here at home. Many blessings to you this year! JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK , PUBLISHER

A fine dining experience with choices from Japan, China, and South East Asia ARTICLE BY JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SEIBERT - FLATIRONS PRO MEDIA

Walking through the entry of Truly Asia in Broomfield, one of the first things you notice is the beautiful decor. It’s colorful, well-lit, and you get the feeling that you’re in for a fine dining experience. As you might expect, the host will greet you and seat you, followed by a waiter or waitress to present you with specials or recommendations. They hand you a menu that is well designed, and something you’ll notice is how easy it is to browse by geographic region to find an entree that fits your tastes, or explore something new.

As the name suggests, at Truly Asia you can choose from a variety of the very best dishes from Japan, China, and South East Asia (Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia). Truly Asia is owned by Ron and Lily Li in partnership with Sam Lo. Ron and Lily are immigrants from Canton, China, now living in Colorado. They developed a passion for Asian Cuisine over their many years of travel. Every detail of the restaurant is a reflection of a dream come true for Ron, Lily, and Sam. There is no one-sizefit-all for wellness, so it was only natural that they joined forces to offer you a smorgasbord of services.

Now that the holidays are done, many of us feel like evil elves dumped us out of a moving sleigh and Father Time ran over us passing on the right. But help is on the way—the third week of January is national “Hunt for Happiness Week.” You won’t need to look far to find some happiness if you live in Broomfield. Just make an appointment with Urban Squeeze Med Spa, Wellness, & Chiropractic Center. This wellness collective is the brainchild of Rachel Smolinski and Meta Foster, of Urban Squeeze, and Dr. Jeff Hogan, of Hogan Health and Chiropractic. Together, they have created a one-stop shop where you can build a long-term wellness relationship with their team. There is no one-size-fit-all for wellness, so it was only natural that they joined forces to offer you a smorgasbord of services. If you come to your first appointment with specific needs, they can usually tailor your visit right then. Even if you had a relatively peaceful, uneventful holiday season, you may be ready for a change. It’s time to shake off the pandemic blues and either get back to being the person you know in the mirror, or find a new version of yourself. As we face a world where the COVID-19 virus may become endemic, wellness and self-care will be waypoints to prevention and healing. Urban Squeeze Med Spa, Wellness, & Chiropractic Center—which will be moving to Highway 7 and Sheridan February 2nd—will be beside you on your journey to wellbeing. CONTINUED >

THE PRACTICE OF PEACE IN THE NEW YEAR A DEEPER LOOK INTO SOO BAHK DO

26

FAM ILY CA R E | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

Peeking in on a typical night of training at Rocky Mountain Martial Arts – Front Range Soo Bahk Do would reveal a high energy experience of discipline, protocol, kicking, punching, and conditioning across multiple age ranges. Something one could call a stereotypical martial arts experience. A deeper look reveals more. Soo Bahk Do is a traditional, Korean martial art founded in experiences of oppression, war, and the consequences of human conflict. This art intentionally develops an atmosphere of respect, courtesy, friendship, unity, cooperation, and goodwill as a catalyst to improve human relations and contribute to a greater vision for peace. Peace in our communities. Peace in our homes. Peace within ourselves. March of 2020 came in like a lion, uninvited the lamb, and set up camp. The pandemic, politics, policies in education, the protection of personal values, and a host of other intensities have all contributed to an environment of stress that is our new normal. Many would say they long for peace but find it allusive or flat out unattainable in this current climate.

To the Soo Bahk Do martial artist, irrespective of age, peace isn’t an experience, peace is a physical and mental discipline. Finding peace takes practice. I want this! How does one practice? Excellent question, young grasshopper! The instructors at RMMA Front Range offer three basic disciplines to promote your practice of peace, today and each day into the new year. BREATHE – A path of redirection can be found in a simple breath. Counter moments of intensity by distancing yourself from the situation, closing your eyes, and taking a full, deep breath. Fill those lungs completely and pause before you exhale. Repeat as necessary. MOVE – The Mayo Clinic beautifully affirms a martial artist’s sentiment that exercise/movement is,“meditation in motion.” They continue, “…as you begin to regularly shed your daily tensions through movement and physical activity, you may find that focus on a single task, and the resulting energy and optimism, can help you stay calm, clear and focused in everything you do.” FORGIVE – A discipline with the most personal sacrifice, summarized in a parable.

ROCK Y MOUNTAIN MARTIAL ARTS

A senior and novice monk were traveling together when they came upon a river. The river was swollen making it very difficult to pass. At the edge of the river was a lovely, young woman unsure of how to get across. She asked for help. The monks had taken a vow of celibacy preventing them from making eye contact with women, much less touching them. But after barely a pause, the senior monk picked up the woman and carried her across. The novice monk was shocked and speechless. His elder had broken his vows! As the monks continued their journey hours passed and no one spoke until the younger monk could no longer contain himself. “How could you carry that woman across the river when we aren’t even supposed to look at women?” The senior monk replied, “I set that woman down hours ago. Why are you still carrying her?” Assuming a daily practice of forgiving others, and equally forgiving yourself releases inner conflict and brings personal peace. Are you seeking practiced peace in the new year? Any one of these disciplines will help you in your pursuit. Want to learn more about the holistic martial artist? Rocky Mountain Martial Arts – Front Range Soo Bahk Do would invite you to stop by and take a peek. Call (720-288-0048) or email hello@rmmafrontrange for more information.

If you have employees, you know firsthand that the loss of a key employee can have a profound impact on business operations. When an employee leaves, customers who dealt directly with that person may worry about receiving their goods or services in a timely manner; suppliers may be concerned about getting paid for their deliveries; and staff morale can also take a dip as remaining employees worry about assuming a heavier workload. That’s why it’s important to make sure that your business is prepared to deal with the unexpected departure of a key employee which usually happens for one of three reasons: the employee chooses to resign, the employee becomes disabled, or he or she passes away. While life insurance cannot protect against employees choosing to leave, it is often used as a tool to help incentivize them to stay; deferred compensation plans are powerful vehicles for doing just this. Deferred compensation arrangements allow you to provide retirement income to select employees. The way it works is that you and the selected employee enter a contract that specifies the compensation you will pay out to him or her in the future. Since you may not set up a specific reserve fund in which a participant has a vested right, a life insurance policy is uniquely suited to informally finance a deferred compensation plan. The future of your business depends on attracting and retaining the right talent with the right tools. It’s also important to protect your business against the economic losses it may face as the result of a top employee’s death with the use of key person insurance. The way it works is that the business applies for and becomes the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy covering the key employee. If the insured employee dies, the business receives the policy proceeds. Deferred compensation and key employee insurance are benefits that are related exclusively to your top employees, but New York Life also has options that you can offer your entire team to help cultivate a rewarding work environment, such as life and disability insurance. These benefits can provide employees and their family’s peace of mind and added financial security, which can go a long way toward attracting and retaining valuable employees. As a business owner, you’ve worked hard to get where you are today. Having a contingency in place will allow you to focus on making the best possible decisions for the future your business.

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

B E YO N D C L O S U R E ARTICLE BY LINDA BOLANDER

“Grief shared is grief diminished, just as joy shared is joy increased.”

When someone we love has died, the idea of closure seems anything but finite. And yet, how do we “find closure” if we’re not going to pass through a magical door and suddenly feel better? How can the rest of us help the bereaved through this uncharted territory that is grief? Kelsi Mathews at In Memoriam has advice. GRIEF IS A JOURNEY Focusing on the “what if’s” after someone dies can end up holding your grief hostage. “The world around us doesn’t stop when someone has died”, Mathews says. “Grief is just love with nowhere to go”. One of her favorite mentors taught her, “Grief shared is grief diminished, just as joy shared is joy increased.” It’s important to find a good listener no matter what you’re grieving, and if possible put that grief into an action or ritual; dance it out, write it out, cry it out, or even yell it out. Putting our grief into something tactile can be very beneficial. It’s also so important to take good care of your body while going through these big feelings. Eat nourishing foods, let in some sunshine, and focus on physical sensations to keep your limbic system in check.

LOSS DURING AND AFTER THE HOLIDAYS It can be difficult for the heartbroken to reach out during the holidays. It’s important for us all to remember some of the hardest times are the firsts: the first holiday, the first birthday, and first death anniversary are going to be especially hard on the bereaved. “Instead of saying things like ‘they’re in a better place’ or immediately offering your story of loss, try saying ‘I don’t know what you’re going through, but I’m just a phone call away”, says Mathews. HOW YOU CAN HELP SOMEONE GRIEVING Mathews says for the first few days, give them a little space — there will come a time they’ll need assistance. If they ask for help, lend a hand. If not, check on them periodically. If they don’t respond immediately, don’t take it personally, but when you do connect, talk about how beloved their person was and share some fond memories. Again, listen and remember that silence is okay. Avoid offering unsolicited advice. Mathews adds in closing, “If more than six months has gone by and a person continues to spiral downward, it might be best to enlist help from a professional.”

The death of a loved one can leave a lot of unanswered questions and stress that can be difficult to handle. Here at In Memoriam, we are honored to provide individualized burial and cremation care and support for every family navigating this part of their journey.
