LIFESTYLE LETTER

Better to Give

December 2022 PUBLISHER

Justin Schierkolk | justin.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Sarah Schierkolk | sarah.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com

"If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am right now." Like time-tested holiday traditions, some things just stick with me. I busted up laughing at that one-liner from Christmas Vacation the first time I heard it, and to this day I still laugh, even though I’ve watched the holiday classic dozens of times. Watching reruns of holiday movie favorites is a fond tradition for many of us. Maybe this special issue of Broomfield Lifestyle will spark some new ideas. For example, attending one of the Nutcracker performances by the Colorado Conservatory of Dance—what a great way to enjoy quality time with family and friends, while supporting a local organization that literally changes people’s lives! Check out our cover story to learn more about that. Broomfield is also home to A Precious Child. One of their many objectives is to make gift-giving a reality for everyone. According to Carina Martin, CEO and Founder, “Every child, despite their circumstances, deserves to be celebrated. We want to help them experience the joys of the holidays with their family and provide a sense of normalcy during difficult times.” I encourage you to read about the Precious Gift program and the impact it has on our local families in need. Finally, in the spirit of holiday shenanigans, one of Santa’s helpers sent me an Email (that’s Elf Mail, for those not in the know) about Rudolph gone missing. Keep an eye out for him in the pages of this issue. When you spot him, scan the QR code associated with the partner ad, and get a special message with your chance to win a Broomfield-Opoly game set. May this holiday season bless you with light, laughter, and love. And if, like me, you're one of those last-minute shoppers...please consider showing some love to one of our local partners. They appreciate you! Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year

Rocky Mountain Sports Club Opens in Broomfield As lifelong athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, and parents of athletes, Tim and Nina Sloan have noticed a trending disconnect in our culture's approach to achievement in athleticism. Current pressures to succeed were usurping the necessary, foundational pillars that support physical and mental wellness… creating pivotal, longer-term consequences. Inspired, they recently opened Rocky Mountain Sports Club right here in Broomfield, offering foundational programs to prepare, advance, and restore their members toward optimal performance and continuing health. Current offerings include yoga, martial arts, sports conditioning, nutrition counseling, and self-defense.

Remember what the holidays were like as a child? Where the ritual of waking up Christmas morning fueled with anticipation left you stumbling into the living room still half asleep? Or how the tactile feeling of unwrapping presents triggered suspense, excitement, and delight, all in equal measure? Maybe the holidays were more about gathering loved ones, sporting matching pajamas, and watching reruns of “A Christmas Story” while noshing on sweet potato pie. As a child, it’s the time of the year when fond moments are made in the part of your memory bank that get you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. For many of us, this special season is a time of joy and tradition. Suddenly the smell of pine and peppermint instigates a slew of nostalgic flashbacks that remind you to call your mom. But for the thousands of Denver Metro children living in poverty, some of the most treasured celebrations of childhood are not always affordable indulgences. When keeping the heat on in the dead of winter takes precedence over presents or when a child’s wish list subconsciously includes necessities (like new socks or a toothbrush) rather than items that are desired like toys or games—it’s no wonder why so many children return to school after the winter break feeling less excited to swap vacation stories with their classmates. To A Precious Child, a Broomfield-based nonprofit that services all 8 Denver Metro Counties, every child is a gift worth celebrating which is why Precious Gift, one of the 11 programs offered by the organization, was created. “It’s easy to forget how things like gifts for the holidays are a luxury for many families who can barely afford to pay the rent,” Carina Martin, CEO and Founder of A Precious Child explains. “Every child, despite their circumstances, deserves to be celebrated. We want to

help them experience the joys of the holidays with their family and provide a sense of normalcy during difficult times.” The Precious Gift program helps thousands of children receive special gifts for birthdays and holidays. In preparation for this holiday season, A Precious Child does something extra special by inviting the public to sponsor specific children’s wishes and holding gift drives for children and families in need. Last year alone, they were able to provide more than 15,000 children and teens with gifts for the holidays. Sometimes, these presents are the only ones they will receive for the season.

“The gifts were an unexpected blessing in disguise,” one Precious Gift recipient had stated. “We’re now able to budget the money to use it for Christmas dinner.” For almost 15 years, A Precious Child has helped provide thousands of disadvantaged children and their caregivers with the tools and resources they need to empower them to achieve their full potential. With a strong focus on Family & Child Advocacy, Family Stability, Academic Success, Social & Emotional Well-Being, and Workforce Development, A Precious Child helps strengthen the community by bringing people together and creating opportunities for children in need.

“Every child, despite their circumstances, deserves to be celebrated. We want to help them experience the joys of the holidays with their family and provide a sense of normalcy during difficult times.”

2022 Precious Gift Drive Help A Precious Child reach their goal of providing 13,750 children with gifts this holiday season by hosting a drive or sponsoring a child. For more information or to learn more about the program, please visit: linktr.ee/preciousgiftprogram

When Eric Anderson of Reunion, Colorado, struggled to find an Uber or Lyft to get to a Broncos game last year, he stumbled across Luxury Rides, LLC, a ride-sharing service owned by Jim and Crystal Becker, also of Reunion. “The first time that we used Luxury Rides was the last time that we used Uber or Lyft,” Anderson said. In the past 12 months, he’s used Luxury Rides for transportation to other sports events, date nights, weddings and the airport. “At the beginning of every month, my wife and I will look at our calendar and book our rides for the entire month,” Anderson said. “Luxury Rides is always 10 minutes early, clean, and professional. The drivers are always safe, friendly, and are great communicators in regards to pickup and dropoff.” Owner Jim Becker takes driving seriously. When he was 16 years old, he lost a best friend in an auto accident. “I told my friends starting then and I tell my friends now that I’d rather be inconvenienced for a couple of hours than to be at your

funeral,” said Becker. “If anyone needed a designated driver, I was an easy sell.” A former Uber and Lyft driver himself, Becker launched Luxury Rides with his wife Crystal in August 2021 to turn his passion for driving into a family business. Luxury Rides partners with professional drivers and other transportation companies while operating much like other rideshare businesses, which allows for the drivers to be compensated as independent contractors. But rather than take a portion of their earnings, Luxury Rides charges a 12% surcharge fee per trip and allows the drivers to name their price. Customers can book online or through phone or email. Most cars are high-end SUVs — “We have a Yukon we drove to death last winter,” said Becker — but people can book vehicles like limos and party buses as well. Mountain rides are a specialty for the company, even in the snow. Becker tells of a group last winter who called Luxury Rides from an

especially blustery Steamboat for transport — no other rideshare companies would attempt the trek to them in the weather. Jamela Davis of Commerce City used Luxury Rides for an anniversary dinner and a comedy show. “The first time [the driver] gave us control of music,” she said. “The second time, the music we liked was already playing — he paid attention to the details.” As the company grows to include drivers in other states, Becker envisions Luxury Rides providing a network of thousands of drivers worldwide. Luxury Rides is offering a winter promotion: 20% for anyone who pre-books a round-trip transport. Visit luxridesco.com for details. So when you are planning your next concert, date night, trip to the airport or when it's time for that family tradition to drive around town to see all of the Christmas lights, think Luxury Rides. Think convenience. Think safety. Think local. D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/BR O O M F I E L D

The Nutcracker by the Colorado Conservatory of Dance

Tradition Transforms to Gift

26

B ACK STAGE | ENTERTAI NME NT

Here we are, fully immersed in a season rich with traditions. Lights. Candles. Cuisine. Home-cooked meals. Gifts. Family. Why do we love it all? Because traditions have this innate ability to establish (or re-establish) a heartfelt connection with those we love. Since 1993, the Broomfield-based Colorado Conservatory of Dance has been presenting a full-length, family-favorite ballet production of The Nutcracker, a pinnacle holiday tradition. More than a tradition, this highly acclaimed CCD program has a deeper mission to be a gift to the community who has been supporting them for 30 years. CONTINUED >

Local CCD students, several of whom are Broomfield residents, tirelessly train for hundreds of hours, ready to be paired with world-renowned guest artists. Internationally recognized dancers from around the world come because they deeply believe in what art can do for a community and for its local dance students. Together they connect with their audiences through mesmerizing choreography, intricate sets, and gorgeous costumes. They use their talents to transform a holiday tradition into a heartfelt gift that will leave a lasting effect on their observers. A true labor of love and something Broomfield locals can be proud of, evidenced by how quickly the performances sell out year after year. While anyone should be able to enjoy a performance, they can be challenging for those with special needs. In a typical theater setting, these guests can get shushed and shamed for their movement, wiggling, and sounds leaving an impression that makes them feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Recognizing this reality, in 2014 CCD responded. More than a typical holiday outing for the masses, and the creation

of world-class programming, the Colorado Conservatory of Dance made it their mission to offer a sensory-friendly performance, accessible to all — a family tradition that includes everyone. Sound levels are adjusted. Audience members are allowed and encouraged to walk around or use manipulatives. Vocalization is welcomed. Typical “theater-going rules” that would inhibit are taken away. After the performance, the dancers will mingle in the lobby with the guests. It is a true VIP experience. Julia Wilkinson Manley, CCD Founder & Artistic Director explains, “For those who have family members who have special needs, when having a holiday experience, you want them to feel all of the enjoyment as you do. This situation is set up for families to feel welcome and to let their guard down. The most special thing about our performers and about this performance is that we create this amazing production, and our sensory-friendly audience is getting the same experience that the typical audience gets to see.”

A guest tells their story. “Our family has been going since 2016 and this event has become an annual family tradition that we look forward to every year. My ten-year-old daughter Eve has a complex genetic disorder. She is profoundly deaf, has low vision, has global developmental disabilities and has most recently been diagnosed with both autism and intellectual disability. With this performance, she is able to stand right in front of the stage (for visual access), dance/move, and she has complete freedom just to exist as the beautiful person she is without constraints or judgment. There is truly no other event like this where my entire family can be comfortable and truly feel and be welcomed and accepted for who we are. The ability to meet the dancers up-close afterwards is also extremely fun and an exciting part of the experience for both my kids.”

30

B ACK STAGE | ENTERTAI NME NT

Equally impacted are the CCD performers, whose training experience is also a gift. Abbey Sterling started dancing with the Colorado Conservatory of Dance when she was 3. Now 15, she is excited to perform several roles in this year’s Nutcracker production, to include Dewdrop, a featured dancer in the Waltz of the Flowers. The sensory-friendly performances are Abbey’s favorite by far. “Because the lights are up, as a dancer, I get to see the audience. I think this is special for everyone. After the performance, I get to meet our guests, and they can touch and feel my costume. It is cool to watch how they react to our tutus and pointe shoes, and to hear how much they loved watching us, and wanting to take photographs together.” Abbey explains the influence her CCD instructors and these world-renowned guest performers have had on her life.

“Once I got to share a dressing room with the Sugar Plums. They were so kind. Hearing their stories and shared experiences was amazing.” Abbey describes what it felt like to meet them and watch all of them dance, inspiring her to train hard, keep going, and that through dance, she could become the best version of herself. In addition to The Nutcracker, CCD outreach performances are her favorite where dancers travel to local schools to perform anti-bullying productions. As the curtains go up, this holiday tradition will once again unfold as the beautiful gift it has become. Audience members, CCD dancers, guest performers, et al, will together experience and celebrate another performance of a lifetime. And for those that catch the spark of what this gift offers, there are CCD programs waiting for them to become a part of it all.

IF THERE IS ONE THING MY FAMILY AND I LOVE THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS, IT’S A BOWL OF GRANOLA. PHOTOGRAPHY LAUREN CHRISTOPHERSON PHOTOGRAPHY

ARTICLE KAREN MITCHELL / FORTITUDE AND FINN

32

SPICED GRANOLA RECIPE WARM SPICED GRANOLA Paired with icy cold yogurt, fruit and honey during the summer or over baked apples drizzled with maple syrup in the cold months, or even straight out of the jar as a healthy snack, it’s a must have.

INGREDIENTS + 4 C. of Rolled Oats

+ 1 C. Sour Cherries

+ 1 C. of unsweetened

+ 1/2 C. Avocado Oil

Toasted Coconut Strips

+ 1/2 C. Maple Syrup

+ 1/2 C. Honey Roasted

+ 2 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon

Sliced Almonds (optional)

+ 2 Tsp. Pumpkin Spice

+ 1/2 C. Pumpkin Seeds

+ 1/2 Tsp. Salt

DIRECTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 250 degrees 02 Crumble coconut strips with a tight squeeze before adding. 03 Gently stir all ingredients together in a large bowl thoroughly. 04 Line a large baking sheet with parchment or slip pad. 05 Evenly spread granola across pan 06 Bake for 30-45 minutes, keeping an eye on when the granola looks lightly browned. 07 Remove from oven and let cool. 08 Store in a large glass jar TIP The trick to having large chunks of granola is to let it fully cool after removing it from the oven and then gently scraping a large wooden spoon through it. This will allow for big pieces to be kept as well as smaller crumbles along the way.

Estate Planning For Business Owners ARTICLE BY DAVE MANLEY & AARON RASK PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

Aaron Rask & Dave Manley - Summit Financial Solutions, Broomfield

All business owners can benefit from some level of estate planning. Building protection into your business plan is one of the most important decisions you can make to safeguard your partners, your employees and your family. Here, we will discuss the four key components of estate planning to make sure you are well set up for success. The most fundamental estate planning tool is a will. A properly executed will, gives clear direction to your executor about how to manage or distribute your assets when you pass away. Then, a somewhat more complex component of an estate plan is a revocable trustthis is a legal entity created to hold your assets while you're alive. Among the many benefits is that your appointed trustee can

take over management of your assets if you're incapacitated. A revocable trust streamlines the transfer of your assets by helping avoid potentially lengthy legal proceedings and costly court fees. A trust may also provide creditor protection for the beneficiaries. Next are powers of attorney. Naming a healthcare power of attorney means your representative can make crucial medical decisions on your behalf should you be unable to, while a financial power of attorney can pay your bills and manage your finances until you get back on your feet. Finally, a buy-sell agreement is a powerful estate planning tool. A buysell agreement is a way to help ensure a smooth transition of your business and ensure your family's financial goals are met after you're no longer around to take care of them. A buy-sell can also outline the terms of succession among the remaining partners, so that all terms are agreed upon in advance.

Some basic estate planning may be done using self-guided online tools, but typically you should use a licensed and experienced attorney to help you draft and execute your plan. The best way to go about it is to make sure that your attorney, financial advisor, and insurance agent are working together on managing and planning your estate. The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
