Holiday Spirit: Love, Laughter, and Family Traditions
Dear Readers,
As the holidays approach, I find myself reminiscing about the magic of childhood—like the aroma of homemade cookies baking, which always transports me back to those carefree days. It’s funny how we try to recreate that magic for our families, whether through twinkling lights or holiday classics that make us a little misty-eyed.
In our family, we have a unique tradition that sets us apart from the usual holiday hustle. Every Christmas Eve, we head to Blue Sheep Bake Shop in Somerville for a scoop of ice cream—yes, ice cream! It all started one year when my girls begged for a sweet treat before the big day. What kind of mom would I be to deny a little pre-holiday indulgence? Now, it’s our cherished ritual.
Now, I must confess something: I actually despise decorating the Christmas tree. There, I said it! It feels like an endless battle with tangled lights and ornaments that seem to have a mind of their own. Who wants to argue over the proper placement of that glittery reindeer ornament from the 1980s? By the time we finish, I’m left wondering if our tree is a festive centerpiece or a modern art installation. Honestly, if it were up to me, I’d slap a bow on it and call it a day!
This month, we’re excited to highlight the magic of the season right here in Bridgewater. Our gift guide on page 32 is packed with local treasures to make your holiday shopping a breeze while supporting our hardworking small businesses. If you’re looking to escape the cold, don’t miss our holiday travel tips on page 22. And for festive fun, our Events listing on page 40 is bursting with activities for the whole family.
As beautiful as this season can be, it can also be challenging for many—especially those feeling the absence of a loved one. Let’s remember to extend our hearts to those in need, embracing the true spirit of the holidays through grace, empathy, and kindness.
Wishing you all love, laughter, and a sprinkle of holiday magic!

The Sunrise Cooling and Heating Mission
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ POLO - MY HAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY
As temperatures drop and heating systems come into play, Sunrise Cooling and Heating is prepared to keep homes comfortable and efficient. Founded in 1984 by Jon Kerr's father, this family-owned business has grown into a trusted name in HVAC and refrigeration services. Today, Candace Kerr, Jon's wife and a second-generation owner, shares her insights on their journey, the values that guide them, and the importance of community involvement.
Caring for Homes and Hearts
The Kerr Family
A LEGACY OF SERVICE
Sunrise Cooling and Heating has been a staple in the community for over 40 years. “Jon and I took over as sole owners in 2019, but we’re building on a legacy that has always focused on quality service,” Candace explains. The company provides both residential and commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) services, alongside refrigeration solutions.
Candace emphasizes the importance of their expertise in refrigeration. “All of our technicians are universally certified, allowing us to service a wide range of refrigeration equipment,” she notes. This capability extends to businesses like restaurants, where reliable cooling is essential.
DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS
On a daily basis, Sunrise's team focuses on servicing and installing HVAC units. This includes not just traditional heating and cooling systems but also boilers and commercial refrigeration units. “Our main concern is ensuring that our customers breathe quality air and that their homes and businesses run efficiently,” Candace states.
Preventive maintenance is a cornerstone of their service. “By servicing units before problems arise, we save our customers money and keep their systems running at peak performance,” she adds. This proactive approach helps prevent costly repairs down the line.
FAMILY VALUES AND ADOPTION
Family is at the heart of Sunrise Cooling and Heating. Candace and Jon’s commitment to family extends beyond their business. Not only do Candace and Jon have four biological sons. They are dedicated foster and adoptive parents, having welcomed 16 children into their home over the past 16 years. This journey has profoundly shaped their values and priorities.
“We’ve seen the struggles that families face, and we want to be part of the solution,” Candace shares. Their experiences in foster care led them to adopt their daughter, when she was just six months old. “Her biological parents made the difficult decision to place her with us, knowing it was in her best interest,” Candace reflects.
This decision was not just about providing their daughter with a stable home but also about fostering a relationship with her biological family. “We want our daughter to understand her roots,” Candace explains. They maintain open communication with their daughter's biological mother, ensuring that she feels connected to her heritage.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
Beyond business, Sunrise Cooling and Heating is dedicated to helping families in need. The company provides maintenance programs to families in the community, showcasing their commitment to giving back. “We want our customers to know that when they choose us, they’re also contributing to meaningful support,” Candace emphasizes. Additionally, Sunrise Cooling and Heating extends their efforts overseas by donating goods to families in Trinidad, furthering their mission to make a positive impact.
Sunrise is also actively involved in local events, such as the 4-H fair, where they engage with residents and support youth programs. “Even if we don’t gain immediate business, we believe in giving back to the community that supports us,” she says.
LOOKING FORWARD
As Sunrise Cooling and Heating prepares for the colder months, Candace is optimistic about the future. “We aim to maintain the family atmosphere in our business—both with our employees and our customers,” she states. Regular team meetings and open communication help foster a supportive environment for everyone involved.
Candace and Jon’s vision for the company includes expanding their services while continuing to prioritize quality and community. “We want to be the trusted name in HVAC that people think of first,” they share.
With a legacy built on service, dedication, and community involvement, Sunrise Cooling and Heating stands ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead. As they enter a new season, they remain committed to ensuring every home feels like a sanctuary, no matter the weather outside.

HOLIDAY TRAVEL INSIGHTS FROM JANE MALECKI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANE MALECKI
As the holiday season approaches, many travelers are seeking unique experiences to celebrate with family and friends. Jane Malecki, a franchise owner of Cruise Planners, shares her insights on holiday travel, drawing from her extensive corporate travel background and passion for holiday traditions.
INSPIRATION FOR TRAVEL
Malecki’s journey into travel began during her corporate career, where she traveled extensively across the globe. “My local colleagues and clients showed me the treasures of local experiences,” she says. This inspired her to combine her local knowledge with tourist highlights, creating one-of-a-kind travel experiences. Her love for European Christmas markets and diverse holiday traditions fuels her passion for holiday travel. “The romance of travel and Christmas is intoxicating,” she adds.
CURRENT TRENDS
This year, Disney remains a popular holiday destination. “From November 15 through New Year’s Day, Disney Parks transform into a Christmas wonderland,” Malecki notes. However, she advises travelers to plan well in advance and be prepared for crowds. For families with older children, relaxing Caribbean cruises or all-inclusive resorts are also trending.

European Christmas Gifts!
TOP HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS
For families seeking memorable experiences, Malecki recommends a Christmas markets tour through Basel, Switzerland, Vienna, Austria, and Prague, Czech Republic. “These cities boast the best Christmas markets,” she explains. For a nostalgic feel, England and Ireland offer rich traditions, though travelers should plan for closures on Christmas Day. For families with young kids, Malecki highlights Disney as an unforgettable holiday experience.
HIDDEN GEMS
If a trip to Europe isn’t feasible, Malecki suggests Montreal and Old Quebec City for their European charm. Domestically, Park City, Utah, offers holiday markets and festive events like a Christmas Eve torchlight parade, reminiscent of a Hallmark movie.
PLANNING TIPS
To ensure a stress-free holiday trip, Malecki emphasizes the importance of planning. “Know the experience you want, set a budget, and manage expectations,” she advises. Working with a travel advisor can help create a realistic budget and navigate costs.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES
Holiday travel comes with its own set of challenges, including crowds and potential illness. “Be patient, enjoy the moment, and remember to care for your health,” Malecki recommends. Travel insurance is essential for handling last-minute changes, providing peace of mind for travelers.
THE FUTURE OF HOLIDAY TRAVEL
Looking ahead, Malecki predicts a rise in holiday travel demand. “More families are seeking diverse experiences over traditional holiday events,” she explains. As travel preferences evolve, so do opportunities for creating lasting memories.
With her expertise and passion, Jane Malecki is ready to help travelers navigate the holiday season, ensuring they create unforgettable experiences with family and friends.

Resident - Rose Marie Burke
At Avalon Assisted Living at Bridgewater, care transcends mere support; it embodies a sense of family, especially during the holiday season.
Resident Annie Youchock cherishes Christmas as her favorite holiday, recalling the joy of Christmas Eve in her Irish-Italian family. Her mother’s generosity in sharing food was a highlight. Although family members now live apart, she continues to enjoy a special seven-seafood dish made only for the holidays. Youchock actively participates in community activities, loving the Christmas carols and decorations. She advises younger generations, “Don’t let family traditions go; they’re so important!”
Resident Bruce Brannan, an energetic 89-year-old, also celebrates Christmas as his favorite holiday. Raised in New Jersey, he delighted in the joy of giving and receiving gifts. A treasured tradition was Christmas dinner with his parents and siblings, which he now enjoys at his niece’s home. He associates the holidays with turkey and ham, reminiscing about how his wife baked pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Brannan participates in community holiday events at Avalon, relishing opportunities to socialize and connect. He encourages younger generations, saying, “Make sure you attend all your family's holiday events; you won't regret it!”
Born in Jersey City in 1942, resident Carl Fischer celebrates Christmas with his two daughters and their families in Little Falls. Fischer cherishes childhood traditions of family dinners and church gatherings, now enjoying watching children open gifts. His favorite holiday dishes include cream of cauliflower soup and smoked turkey.

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
