’Tis the season of twinkling lights, jolly carols and the legendary clash of wills at our home. Behold the picture above: A snapshot of last Christmas when my daughters agreed to don matching dresses. Well, we managed to corral three out of four into the festive frocks—quite a triumph if I do say so myself. Our eldest opted for a dress that harmonized in color but declared her freedom from full-fledged “twinning.” Alas, the days of poofy Christmas dresses seem numbered, a bittersweet realization for me. I can’t help but wonder when they’ll rebel and turn up in ugly Christmas sweaters instead! This year brought us a whirlwind of new experiences, the most significant being our move to a charming new abode in Martinsville! Here, amidst new neighbors and burgeoning friendships, we’re crafting fresh holiday traditions. Our promise to our girls held strong; our new home now sparkles with festive fervor, courtesy of the enchanting touch of Shack Shine. During the winter, your thoughts turn to cozying up by the fire, building snowmen with the children and sledding. But it’s also a great time to consider listing your house for sale. “There are many advantages to listing your home in the winter,” says Michele Klug, CEO of the Klug Realty Group, Keller Williams. “There is reduced competition, and serious buyers are attracted to the winter ambiance and potential tax benefits. Since many sellers choose to wait for the warmer months, there are fewer homes on the market during the winter, which makes your property stand out more, increasing your chances of a quicker sale and potentially getting a better price.” Klug notes that buyers she sees during the winter are more serious and motivated. “This type of buyer is often driven by specific reasons, such as job relocations, family changes or investment opportunities,” she says. “This can lead to quicker and

A bonus: You won’t have to maintain a pristine outdoor landscape as you do in the summer, which can be time-consuming and expensive. The focus instead shifts to your home’s interior and overall condition, which simplifies the selling process. Wintry months also give the gift of time. “Holiday vacations and extended weekends allow sellers and buyers more time for showings and negotiations,” Klug notes. “Also, many real estate agents have fewer clients during these months, which affords them a unique opportunity to devote more personalized attention to your sale.” With fewer homes on the market, you may have greater negotiating leverage. “Buyers may be more willing to compromise on price or terms to secure a property when their options are limited,” Klug says. “This can work to your advantage when it comes to selling your home at a favorable price.” There are tax benefits, as well. “If you sell your primary residence and meet certain eligibility criteria, you may be able to exclude up to $250,000—or $500,000

for married couples—of the capital gains from your taxable income,” she says. “Consulting with a tax advisor can help you maximize these benefits.” Klug notes that winter sales often progress more swiftly. Because of the reduced competition and motivated buyers, you can expect a shorter time on the market. This means less time, money and effort invested in maintaining and showing your property. The Basking Ridge resident enjoys entertaining her daughter, Jennifer, along with her siblings and their families during the holidays. “Everyone is so busy but we make it a point to get together for Christmas,” she says. As the owner of BOMA 520 in Somerville, the restauranteur certainly knows how to please a crowd. When Taylor hosts her family, a sample meal would include hors d’oeuvres, like a charcuterie tray, scallops wrapped in bacon, spinach and asiago stuffed mushrooms and shrimp cocktail. The next course could include items like a big antipasto salad, prime rib of

beef, garlic mashed potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts and honey glazed carrots. “This is complimented by a nice bottle of wine and lots of desserts,” she says. “My family loves my homemade bread pudding. It’s OK to indulge: It’s the holidays, after all!” When planning a large gathering with restaurant patrons, Taylor suggests they incorporate vegetarian or vegan and gluten-free items into their order. “Charcuterie trays are always a huge hit and are great for variety as you can customize them in an artistic way, with items like fruit and cheese in addition to meats,” she says. “I recommend that people mix and match items.” CONTINUED >

CHIMICHURRI AIOLI • 1 c cilantro leaves • 1 c parsley leaves • 1 c chopped scallions (green parts only) • 1 garlic clove • 1/4 c white vinegar • 1 tsp kosher salt • 1 tsp black pepper • 2 c mayonnaise Blend cilantro, parsley, scallions, garlic, vinegar, salt and pepper in a blender until smooth. Pineapple Syrup • 2/3 c sugar • 1/2 c water • 1/2 c pineapple (cubed), fresh or canned Combine sugar and water in a large pot over low heat. Stir until sugar is incorporated. Remove syrup from heat and pour over pineapple chunks in blender, reserving some syrup on the side. Blend pineapple with syrup and then recombine with remainder of syrup without straining. Leave overnight, then strain.

Sweet Nost algia NICOLE MONDLOCK CONJURES MEMORIES OF HER CHILDHOOD WITH EVERY TREAT SHE BAKES Nicole Mondlock knows first-hand how baking can help a person de-stress and contribute to a positive outlook. For seven years, Mondlock, who has a master’s degree in mental health counseling, worked as an outpatient therapist, case manager, grief counselor and crisis intervention specialist. “I loved being able to create a calm and safe space to empower my clients and advocate for them,” she says. However, when the pandemic forced her grief groups online, she experienced a toll on her own mental health. Grappling with the elusive work-life balance, Mondlock turned to what she loved most in life: baking. “Baking has always been a creative outlet for me and a way to de-stress,” she says. “My dad started making homemade banana bread with my sister and me when we were little and I still use the same recipe.”

Mondlock’s other fond memory is of baking brownies with her mom when she was 14. They used a box mix but added special ingredients. “My maiden name is ‘Pepe,’ and from that day forward, my brownies became known as the ‘Nicole Pepe Brownies.’ They were requested at every gathering,” she says. “I’ve since tried out dozens of brownie recipes to get a similar brownie but without using a box mix.” She made cupcakes for friends in high school. In college, she made cookies to give to neighbors or bring to class. In graduate school, she made cakes for birthdays and parties. It was natural that in August 2020, she started Baked with Love by Nicole. Today, she offers a large menu of treats available to order for pick-up or delivery. “I make cakes, cupcakes, cookies, donuts, muffins, scones, breads, brownies, cinnamon buns and more,” she says. “Some of my favorite items are made with recipes from when I was growing up.”

“Aunt Theresa’s Cookies” is a special family recipe that has been passed down. “It is a vanilla version of the Italian knot cookies that are sometimes made with lemon or anise extract,” she says. “The aroma from these cookies in the oven evokes wonderful memories of holidays with my family.” Mondlock, who grew up in Monmouth County, recently relocated to Somerville from New York with her husband, Jeffrey, and Maggie, a Cattle Dog mix, and is enjoying getting to know the area. “One of my favorite things about what I do is bringing a smile to someone’s face through the simple joy of a sweet treat,” she says. “I love being asked to be a small part of special occasions or traditions and creating desserts that help make life just a little bit sweeter.”

Ho l i d ay B a k i ng Ti ps 1. Make your cookie dough ahead of time and wrap it in plastic wrap/store in the fridge for two days or the freezer for several weeks. 2. If you don’t have a cookie cutter shape you need, be creative and use a few shapes that you do have to make the shape you want rather than buying more.

4. Stock up on ingredients like butter, eggs and sugar in advance to avoid the holiday rush. Butter can be stored in the freezer. 5. Use plastic tablecloths for quick and easy cleanup when you are done baking. CONTINUED >

3. Check your baking powder and baking soda to make sure they are not expired as it can lead to flat cookies or treats.

Ingre d i e nt s: • 25 Oreo cookies • 4 oz cream cheese, at room temperature

• 1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 tsp coconut oil • Candy canes, crushed

D i re c t i on s: 1. Using a food processor, crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs.

5. Dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate using a fork and place back on the wax paper.

2. Beat the softened cream cheese and Oreo cookie crumbs in a stand mixer until a dough-like mixture has formed.

6. Sprinkle the Oreo balls with crushed candy canes and place in the fridge to harden. Store in the fridge until serving.

3. Roll into 1 inch balls. Place on baking sheet lined with wax paper and freeze for one hour. 4. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave, stirring the mixture every 30 seconds.

Each year, visitors to Mansion in May—the preeminent designer showhouse in the New Jersey–New York area—are invited to cast votes for their favorite design in a variety of categories. The winner is presented with the coveted Tulip Award. “Our guests truly had a tough time choosing their favorite spaces,” says Barbara Ruane, co-chair of this year’s event presented by the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center at Three Fields in Menham. “The visitors were so enthralled with the beauty of each room, which made their decisions even more difficult.” Ultimately, though, visitors gravitated toward the festive coziness of home that is heralded by the winter holidays. Behold: “Moor and Mountain,” the Tulip Award winner for interior design created

by Sam Ciardi of Samuel Robert Signature Spaces in Millburn. In this room—named in homage to a verse in “We Three Kings of Orient Are”—the natural color palette warms guests as it illuminates against the dark wood. Fine art and trophy collections add to the appeal of this rustic, but regal retreat.
