Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy. While our family of six only has one speed—go—we try to remind ourselves that not every week needs to be packed with constant kids' activities and trips. Rather, it’s OK to maintain a slower pace and bask in the simple moments of enjoying those around us. For Jake, the art of kicking back and relaxing comes naturally. For me, it takes mental reminders and intentional choices to be able to slow down. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, give yourself permission to take some time to enjoy some of the simple pleasures. Host a backyard barbecue with friends, make s’mores by a fire pit, spend a day on the water, eat ice-cream on a hot summer day or simply take in an evening walk and enjoy the night sky with someone you love. In honor of the Fourth of July, our team at City Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. We hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things Central New Jersey has to offer during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you. JOIN THE FUN AS HOT AIR BALLOONS MAKE A MASS ASCENT INTO THE CENTRAL JERSEY SKIES

There is something spiritual about watching a hot air balloon mass ascension, hearing the steady whoosh of the fire licking up from the baskets as the balloons slowly, almost meditatively, lift off the ground, soaring higher, higher, higher, until they drift toward the horizon and become mere specks in the sky. If you have never witnessed the magic of over 100 balloons rising simultaneously, mark your calendar for the 39th annual New Jersey Lottery Festival of Ballooning, the largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America, which will be held this year on July 29 to 31. Set to the soundtrack of songs like “Up, Up And Away” by The 5th Dimension—“Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon?”—the balloons begin making their ascent around 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. each day, weather-permitting, from Solberg Airport in Readington. From there, they meander the skies over the countryside until they touch down who-knows-where. The photos are definitely Instagram-worthy—and even more so if you catch a ride in one of these beauties. The festival is known for bringing in the newest and best “special shaped” balloons from around the world. Often whimsical and the size of New York City skyscrapers, they have run the gamut from a brilliant yellow sun to a 105-foot-tall sequined Elvis to an 86-foot-tall replica of Darth Vader’s head to a menagerie of animals and the world’s largest free-flying American flag. A popular balloon is the dinosaur-themed “Jurassic Journey,” piloted by Tracy Leaver of Pittstown. Leaver has been involved in ballooning since the early 1980s, when she started out on a balloon chase crew—the group of people who help launch the balloon for flight and then chase it until it lands, well, wherever it lands. “People often start out on the crew to learn and decide if they want to proceed in the sport or just stay as part of the crew, which is wonderful as well,” says Leaver, who became a private pilot and then a commercial pilot in 1998, but still enjoys working on fellow pilots’ crews. Since hot air ballooning is a Federal Aviation Administration–regulated sport, Leaver went through an extensive training for her commercial license, which included a minimum of 36 hours of flight time with an instructor, written tests and flight-check tests. Leaver has participated at the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning for about 20 years, 15 of those as a pilot. “Balloon pilots love to share the sport with everyone they know. There’s something special about taking off in one of the oldest forms of flight and being able to give that experience to the people in the basket with you,” she says. “So, it’s amazing when we can all get together in a large group, like at a festival.” What Leaver loves most about the sport is the pure adventure of piloting a balloon. “Every flight is different—even if you’ve been flying for 25 years. You can have an anticipation of what a flight will

be like and then have it end up completely different than your expectation,” she says. “We may think we’re going to land in one spot, but since we can’t steer the balloon, we may end up going in a completely different direction.” The pilots pay careful attention to the weather. Even on clear, calm-looking days, a wind shear hundreds of feet up might make flying prohibitive. “Safety always comes first,” says Leaver, who monitors a number of sources that help her determine if a day is flyable. Rising into the sky is pure magic, no matter how many times you’ve gone up. “I had the most wonderful flight last year at a festival in Pennsylvania,” she says. “I took up a mom, dad and two kids. We were flying toward a large pond with a fountain in the middle. I thought it would be fun to come down low over it. The kids were delighted—and we adults felt like kids again. We could have stayed there all day, enjoying the mist on the pond and the beautiful sun shining on us. My chase crew was taking photos like crazy and giggling and we were laughing. It was a moment of pure joy.” Besides meeting pilots like Leaver, festival-goers can enjoy live music, a nighttime hot air balloon glow, fireworks display, family entertainment and attractions, the Running with the Balloons 5K, children’s amusement rides, interactive exhibits and hundreds of vendors. Those who are curious but not quite ready to sail away in a balloon can take a ride in a hot air balloon that is securely tethered to the ground.

BEYOND THE BALLOONS In addition to the balloons, the festival books an exciting roster of performing artists. This year’s lineup includes: Laurie Berkner—recognized as the “queen of kids’ music” by People magazine—headlines the children’s concert on Friday. Berkner has released 14 best-selling albums, was the first recording artist to perform in music videos on Nick Jr. and has authored a number of picture books based on her songs. Alternative rock heavy-hitter Collective Soul—whose breakthrough song “Shine” is ranked in the top 100 songs of the ’90s—plays on Friday and is followed by a worldclass Fireworks Extravaganza. Todd Rundgren, a 2021 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, headlines the festival’s Main Stage on Saturday. Classic rock legend Kansas—featuring Dunellen’s own Tom Brislin, who joined the band in 2019 as the group’s keyboardist and backing vocalist—closes out the festival on Sunday. Throughout the festival, keep your eyes to the skies for David “The Bullet” Smith, who holds five Guinness World Records for the highest cannonball shot and the farthest cannonball shot. Nicole Rutigliano Has Created a World Where Kickball Is All Grown Up—and Girls Rule

“Not in the Face Kickball” is not the game you played— and perhaps dreaded—in grade school. In this league, 250 women over the age of 40 spend their summer kicking balls, rounding bases, laughing and making new friends as their kids cheer them on. Nicole Rutigliano, aka “the Commissioner,” is astounded by how her simple desire to get a group of neighborhood women together for pick-up games of kickball last year absolutely exploded into a movement. “I did little advertising—just stuck fliers in mailboxes and posted on social media,” the Martinsville resident says. “Obviously, I struck a nerve. All these women were like me: lonely and tired of sitting at home in our pajamas and missing out on watching our kids play sports due to the pandemic. We started in the neighborhood park, and it was very loose. The thought was: ‘Make it if you can. Don’t worry if you can’t. Bring a friend. Bring grandma. Bring whoever.’” The idea formed in 2021 when Rutigliano was visiting her sister in North Carolina. “One day, she went to play a pickup kickball game in her community. Her son sent me a video of her playing—and he was laughing in the background. They were having this moment,” Rutigliano says. “I thought how awesome it was that even though moms could not go to their kids’ games, kids could go to something like this and root on their moms.” As they began playing, word spread and soon 110 women from all backgrounds were calling Rutigliano wanting to join—enough for a whole league. Last year, there were six teams, all named after ’80s movie classics like “Less Than Zero,” “Sixteen

Candles,” “The Breakfast Club,” “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Pretty in Pink.” Now, the league is up to 20 teams. The teams play a six-week schedule at Chimney Rock Park from mid-June to the end of July, complete with a playoff tournament and championship game. The name Rutigliano chose—“Not in the Face Kickball”—is an homage to the soccer games she used to play with her kids in the backyard. “They would baby-kick the ball to me, and I’d say, “Kick the ball—but not at my face!’” she says. “I chose the name because it’s hilarious and women our age totally get it. We want to protect our faces at all costs.” The league became a family affair, with Rutigliano’s three children, aged 16, 18 and 20, jumping in to help her create rules and a logo. The league is purely recreational and non-judgmental: There are no tryouts or practices and games fit busy moms’ schedules. “My friends and I are not athletic. I didn't even have proper sneakers when I started. We don't care if you have never played before, if you can’t play or if you have to walk,” she says. “When we played kickball in grade school, we had this fear that we’d trip and people would laugh. This is a chance to come back with a vengeance—maybe not as the best player but with the confidence of just getting out of your comfort zone and meeting new people. This is a game you win by having the courage to just come out.” The only hard rule is participants must be 40 or older. “If you’re over 40, you understand where we all are in life,” explains Rutigliano, who is 52. “The oldest is 72—and she’s really cool.”

Whole groups join the league as teams but there is welcomed space for individual players everywhere. “There’s a hockey mom team. A bunco team. A book club team,” says Rutigliano. “However, if someone joins those teams they feel right at home. The whole point is to meet new women and have fun.” The best part of the league for Rutigliano is having her kids cheering for her on the sidelines as she did for their

games. “They give me advice—‘Kick with the side of your foot!” “Slow down!” ‘Don’t go that far!’—and it makes me laugh because I’d say things like ‘Skate faster!’ to them. Of course, we get that. One of the best parts about summer is harvesting homegrown tomatoes and fresh garden basil. You can play around with this recipe: Toss it over a salad, swap out cigliene mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes or pair with grilled or baked chicken breast.

INGREDIENTS • 16 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced thin • 2–3 fresh ripened tomatoes, sliced thin • 1 bunch fresh basil, sliced thin • 1/4 c extra virgin olive oil • 1/8 c balsamic vinegar • 1 clove fresh garlic, minced • 1 pinch kosher salt • 1 pinch fresh ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Slice both the fresh mozzarella and tomatoes roughly the same size. 2. Mince garlic. 3. Combine extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper. 4. Mix well. 5. Layer mozzarella and tomato slices. 6. Drizzle with dressing. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Top with thin-sliced basil. Len Garza, whose namesake firm focuses on business and real estate law, had an entirely different career before he left his native Texas for the Garden State in 2003. In addition to legal work, Garza is active on the charity circuit. He lives in Central New Jersey with his wife, Heather, a colorist for the fashion industry, and his two daughters, 9-year-old Blair and 7-year-old Blake.

Q: WHAT SPARKED YOUR CAREER CHANGE? A: I was working in the telecommunications industry in Houston, Texas, which is where I was born and raised. Law always held an interest for me, but once I got into the working world, when I was dealing with personal and business contracts, I realized that law touches everything.

Q. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO MOVE TO NEW JERSEY? A: My older brother is in Manhattan, and I had a couple of friends in Central New Jersey, so I was looking for a way to get here when I applied to Seton Hall Law School.

Q: AFTER YOU GRADUATED, YOU SPENT A DECADE WORKING FOR LARGE LAW FIRMS BEFORE OPENING YOUR OWN PRACTICE AT THE END OF 2019. WHAT PROMPTED THAT DECISION? A: I wanted to focus on family-owned businesses, which I didn’t get the opportunity to prioritize when I was with the larger firms.

Q: YOU HAVE SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER ADVOCACY AMBASSADOR FOR THE CHARITY AUTISM SPEAKS, WHICH IS THE LARGEST RESEARCH ORGANIZATION IN THE UNITED STATES DEVOTED TO THE CONDITION. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? A: My daughter, Blake, was diagnosed with high-functioning autism, and that raised it on my radar. I wanted to help spread awareness about autism. With Autism Speaks, that’s what I did, and it included writing letters to local representatives in support of autism initiatives and legislation.

Q: YOU’RE NOW ON THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF ENABLE, A NONPROFIT THAT PROVIDES SERVICES, RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL, DEVELOPMENTAL AND PHYSICAL DISABILITIES IN CENTRAL NEW JERSEY. A: I had discovered when I was volunteering with Autism Speaks that while there are a number of resources for young special-needs individuals and for families whose children have autism, there is nothing close to those level of resources for adults with autism. It’s a steep decline—like falling off a cliff—after that.

Q: WHAT CONTRIBUTION DOES ENABLE MAKE? A: It sets up and runs group adult homes for people with special needs, which includes autism, so this was a natural progression for me. Also, I like the idea that it’s a local organization; Autism Speaks is national. I wanted to feel I was making a local impact. I wanted to actually see people and families in Central New Jersey benefiting.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING OR DOING CHARITY WORK? A: I spend all my spare time with my family. My daughters have a lot of interests that keep me busy. Blair goes to acting camp on the weekends, and Blake takes gymnastics classes. I’m their chauffeur. We also like traveling; before the pandemic, we used to go to museums in New York City and Philadelphia. We’re looking forward to doing that again soon.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? A: I want to really grow my law firm and help and serve more family-owned businesses. And I want to practice what I preach: I want to branch out and do more entrepreneurial things such as buying and selling real estate and making investments. And, of course, it goes without saying that I want to increase my charity work toward autism. I’m thinking of starting or giving to a foundation for special-needs communities as a whole. WHY THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR KIDS WHO CODE

CODING REVOLUTION CODE NINJAS Marisa Narula has seen the future—and it’s written in code. “At least 60 percent of the jobs of the future will require knowledge of coding on some level,” she says. “Regardless of the fields our children go into, this skill set will help them further their careers. There is already so much being automated.” Narula should know. As an information technology recruiter for the past two decades, she has watched computer programming becoming more critical. As she and her husband, Kanwar, observed their sons Joshua and Jai, now 11 and 16 respectively, play video games, they wished—as many parents do— that they could be learning something while they were gaming. They decided to act on that thought: They became owners of Code Ninjas, a franchise with over 600 locations across North America and the United Kingdom that teaches computer science to children as young as 5. In the four-year, game-based curriculum, children learn how to code by building their own video games and in the process strengthen their skills in math, logic and problem-solving. Narula opened the highly awarded Hillsborough-Montgomery Code Ninjas in 2019. It was so successful that locations in Green Brook and Bridgewater followed. The program has a martial arts theme: the center is called a “dojo,” students are called “ninjas” and instructors are “senseis.” As children

progress through a nine-belt program, which takes them from white belt to black belt, they learn coding skills and a variety of languages such as Scratch, JavaScript, Unity 3D, C# and Lua, which is the language of Roblox. In the black belt, children learn how to code and publish their very own video game, from concept to delivery. “The ninjas prove their skills to advance to the next belt level, and we have a ceremony during which they get to ring a gong,” she says. “It’s really fun.” Narula, who places special emphasis on involving girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), has received commendations from Hillsborough and Montgomery Township for her efforts and was selected to receive the Cultural Advancement Award across the Code Ninjas international franchise. The Hillsborough-Montgomery center was also recognized as a Black Belt Center of Excellence recently, ranking it in the top 10 percent of franchise locations worldwide for performance and customer satisfaction. Additionally, Narula has successfully advocated for International Day of the Girl to be officially recognized and observed in local towns, prompting the franchise to ask her to be their official spokeswoman for Day of the Girl. “We encourage reaching girls before middle school because that is the tipping point

when they decide if they want to pursue STEM,” she says. “If you have not reached a girl by around the sixth grade, there is less than a 2 percent chance she will pursue coding in the future.” It’s never too early to introduce a child to coding. “They'll learn critical thinking and form a solution mindset,” she says.
