Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As we reflect on the many women in our lives, we are thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. We are so proud of the women here in Bridgewater, and we want you to know that no matter your age or occupation, you are a unique and crucial part of who we are as a whole. We are the parents of four daughters, and it has always been our goal to be role models for them and to lead lives that make them proud. It is why we work so hard producing our publications; why we prioritize our health; why we choose to be inclusive and kind to others; why we wake up every morning ready to conquer the world. If our girls grow up to emulate those choices, then we will consider ourselves a success. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in one way or another. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. We also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

“Conventional,” thank God, is not a word that ever can be used to describe Terry Lyons. The founder of the law firm Lyons & Associates, which has offices in Morristown, Somerville and soon to be in Freehold Township, Lyons’ mission is to redefine how law is practiced. “This means how we think and work and live and act,” she says. “We’re not a typical law firm, and we’re proud of it.” At Lyons & Associates, the uber-friendly offices advertise themselves with the catchy slogan “Your Lighthouse in the Storm.” Like Silicon Valley tech firms, they have a variety of fun features ranging from putting greens to waiting rooms appointed with toys and candy. “We do TikTok videos, there’s no dress code and lawyers enjoy unlimited paid time off,” Lyons says, adding that it is that atmosphere that helps the firm always put the client in the center of the decision-making process. Lyons, one of the top matrimonial and family law attorneys in the state, was one of the first in New Jersey to earn a dual degree in law and social work, a defining distinction. “Lawyers think too much, and social workers feel too much,” she says. “It’s a scary combination.” It was that combination of talents that led Lyons & Associates—one of only 2 percent of female-founded businesses in the country to exceed annual revenues in the millions—to create the first free smartphone app of its kind in New Jersey that allows users to get information on divorce, calculate estimated child support and be instantly connected to the state’s domestic violence shelters. Lyons was a teacher when she decided to attend night classes to get a master’s degree in social work from Rutgers University. One of her requirements was a five-week class called “Law and Social Work” that changed her career path. The professor had just authored a new dual-degree program in conjunction with Rutgers Law School in Camden, and the rest is history.

After graduating in 2001, Lyons clerked for a justice on the New Jersey Supreme Court then went to work for a nationally recognized firm that had hundreds of lawyers across the country. “One of the partners handled matrimonial law as a courtesy to our clients,” she says. “I asked to work with him, and he taught me everything he knew.” In 2004, Lyons opened her own firm, which now has 12 lawyers whose practice areas range from adoption and real estate to wills, trusts and estates, criminal law, special needs law and general business litigation and administrative law. “We are,” she says, “a different breed of human. We are wicked smart and super-kind.” Lyons, author of the best-seller Sticks and Stones, Life Lessons from a Lawyer, was named one of the “Top 10 Best Female Attorneys” by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys, and her firm was declared the No. 2 best place to work in New Jersey by NJBIZ. “I don’t pay attention to accolades,” she says. As a female lawyer in what is still considered a male profession, Lyons, who has served on several boards of trustees supporting women and children, is dedicated to “breaking ground and bringing others with me.” “Mentoring is the right thing to do,” she says. “It gives us satisfaction to see others mature, and it’s good business because it creates an army of people our firm has helped, who in turn can then help us.” Lyons lives in Somerset with her wife, Linda Tamm, an entrepreneur who owns her own company, and their two adopted children, 20-yearold Destiny and 17-year-old Jamei.

“In New Jersey, adoptive parents are permitted to change their children’s names at the time of the adoption, but we didn’t, because their names are a lasting gift from their birth families,” Lyons says. “We wanted to respect and honor that.” Through the years, the couple has fostered and mentored several children, which Lyons finds rewarding. “We also have a lot of pets,” she says. “There’s Oliver, a pig who is the size of a poodle and likes to listen to Jack Johnson music. There have been lots of dogs, cats and other animals as well. We always say that anyone who can stand the chaos of our home is welcome to join it.” When asked how she balances her work and home life, Lyons has a well-rehearsed ready response: “The first thing we need to do is stop asking this question only of women,” she says. “We need to ask it equally—of men, too. The second thing we need to do is actually recognize that there is no such thing as balance; it’s choosing on a daily basis what to prioritize, whether it’s attending my son’s track meet, cooking with my daughter, spending time with my wife or working until midnight.” She’s set a high goal for herself: Before she hits 65, in 13 years, she and her team want to grow Lyons & Associates into a 50-lawyer firm, with a national reputation and in which she owns only 1 percent. “My sole purpose is to build something that can succeed without me,” she says. “Our entire team works every day to create a legacy firm that will exist beyond me and beyond us. Choose a spring color palette. Seek inspiration from what’s happening outdoors. Even if you don’t have expansive gardens, look to nature and pull colors that speak to you. Bring the outdoors in for the prettiest spring table. Nothing says “spring” quite like flowers. Creating a tablescape that reflects the season includes incorporating those outdoor elements. Look around your landscape and see what you can add. From tulips to peonies, roses to hydrangeas, there is much to bring indoors from nature. Have allergies? No worries! Faux flowers are just as lovely. Make a centerpiece. Incorporate outdoor elements into a gorgeous centerpiece in your favorite container. Think: urn, basket, bucket, even a toolbox. Break out those “special occasion” dishes. Take your fine china out of storage and use it! What’s the point of having pretty things that we keep in storage and never use? You can dress it up or down. The only limits we have are ones we place on ourselves. We should not wait until a “special” occasion to use china. Every day, every occasion, is special.

Add some pretty table linens. I know it’s sometimes easier to use paper napkins, but break out the linens. There are so many beautiful and inexpensive options out there that will up your tablescaping game, making it feel more elegant and cozy. Create a spring-inspired brunch menu. The menu is just as important as the décor. Choose dishes that include flavors of the season that are light bites, such as finger sandwiches, quiches, muffins and pastries. Remember the candles. Candles add a lot of mood lighting— even in the daytime. Nothing says “cozy” more than some dimly lit candles both on the table and around the room. Exercise is part of a healthy routine, but in a fastpaced world, sometimes finding just five minutes of free time can be a challenge. For Julie Kaminski, founder of The Walking Book Club, discovering a way to balance work with fitness became a goal she not only achieved, but now shares with an audience that spans the globe. Kaminski, who has lived in the Bridgewater area for over 25 years, caught the fitness bug early on. From being an athlete in college, to later teaching group fitness classes in Flemington at Health Quest, the YMCA and the Hunterdon Medical Center over the years, her experience ranges from strength training to yoga to kickboxing. She started The Walking Book Club as a way to make time for fitness even when it seemed impossible. “It can be a real challenge to eat right, exercise, manage work, family, social life and really thrive,” says Kaminski, who, with three children of her own, speaks from experience on the difficulties of finding time to focus on one’s health. “I’ll be the first to say that if I could pay someone to work out for me I would.” It takes mindful effort to be healthy and happy, and creating The Walking Book Club is rooted deeply in Kaminski’s own family experience. “My son is dyslexic, and when he was diagnosed, we’d listen to audiobooks to and from school,” she says. “I was intrigued. I loved listening to the book with my earbuds because I could multitask with chores or take a walk and get some exercise in while being engaged.”

Encouraging people to take their walks outside has additional benefit in trying times. “Being in nature has been proven to promote a positive mood,” Kaminski says. “Walking just 10 minutes a day makes a difference in health, as well as boosts creativity and productivity. It’s easy and all you need is a good pair of walking shoes and earbuds,” she says. The club, now in its tenth year, has soared from 1,000 online members to over 10,000, with their online discussion group growing from 200 to 6,300 people, all within the past two years. (The group gives audiobooks a score based on “sneaker ratings,” a 1–5 scale ranking system based on the books’ motivation to make people move, quality of narration and overall experience.) “The great thing about The Walking Book Club is that anyone can do it and it’s completely free,” she says. “The only rule is that you have to be moving if you want to listen,” she says, adding that you don’t necessarily have to walk to be a part of it—any movement will do. “It’s all about moving, being mindful, making time for yourself and connecting with others,” she explains. “Inspiring others and giving them the tools to achieve better health and happiness is the motivation behind what I do. This year, the museum rocked the art world with its exhibition “Heroes & Monsters: Jean-Michel Basquiat, The Thaddeus Mumford, Jr. Venice Collection,” which showcased 25 never-before-seen paintings by the celebrated Neo-Expressionist. The permanent collection boasts more than 2,400 objects, including contemporary art, American art from the 18th century to 1945, art of the ancient Americas and African art. About 10 minutes north, discover the city of Winter Park, a treasure trove of art collections. At the top of your list is the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including the artist and designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, art glass, leaded-glass lamps and windows, as well as art and architectural objects from his Long Island country estate, Laurelton Hall. You can even step inside the breathtaking chapel interior he created for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The museum’s holdings also include American art pottery, late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings, graphics and decorative art. Explore the campus of Rollins College—which fronts glistening Lake Virginia and is often ranked as one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation— and the art collection in its museum. The Rollins Museum of Art features rotating exhibitions and an extensive permanent collection that includes the only European Old Master paintings in the Orlando area and a sizeable American art collection. Its forward-thinking contemporary art collection is on view both at the museum and in its on-site boutique hotel, The Alfond Inn. Proceeds from the Inn, which was named after art collector and alumnus Theodore Alfond and his wife, Barbara, fund student scholarships. Spend an afternoon at the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens, which is located on a stunning waterfront property on the banks of Lake Osceola. The museum’s collection focuses on American representational sculpture, with over 200 works by the Czechborn sculptor.
