This month we celebrate the businesses that make our community so vibrant. In this issue we can finally reveal the winners of our 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards! This process started all the way back in September with a nomination round. Our readers were asked to nominate their favorite local businesses in over 30 categories! It was then followed up in October with a voting round on the finalists. The votes were tabulated in November, and in December we hosted our Readers’ Choice Celebration for our winners at Bridgewater Commons Community Hub. It’s been hard to keep these names a secret for so long and it’s nice to let the cat out of the bag. Flip over to page 28 to learn which businesses made an impact on our community in 2021. In this issue, we also celebrate the month of love! Fun fact: We were actually married on Valentine’s Day, so we hold this holiday as near and dear to our hearts than the average couple. RVCC Board of Trustees Names New Chair Caren Bateman has been named the new Chair of the Raritan Valley Community College Board of Trustees. Bateman is the owner of Somerville-based Shoebox Computer Services Inc. In the early 1980s, she worked in the federal government in the Office of Vice President George H. W. Bush. Roger R. Locandro was elected Vice Chair from Hunterdon County and Tracy DiFrancesco Zaikov was chosen to continue serving as the Vice Chair from Somerset County.

Patrick McVerry Named Minor League Baseball Executive of the Year Ballpark Digest has named Somerset Patriots President/General Manager Patrick McVerry its 2021 Minor League Baseball “Executive of the Year.” McVerry led the team through the transition from independent baseball to joining MiLB as the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate. In Somerset’s first year with the Yankees, season and single game ticket sales increased dramatically, with over 1,000 new ticket plans purchased for the season.

WHEN SHOULD A COUPLE SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP? It’s surprising but most couples wait an average of seven years before seeking help. They just hope that things will get better. You should reach out to a professional, like a couples counselor or a clergy leader, if you’re experiencing chronic distress in your relationship for six months or longer.
WHAT IS THE MOST FREQUENT REASON COUPLES SEE A COUNSELOR? Couples report a “lack of intimacy." Many also say they have little communication or are having the same argument repeatedly. What that likely means is that each partner is stuck in their own perspectives and cannot communicate in a way that will advance the conversation.
HOW DO YOU HELP?
YOU KNOW “THAT COUPLE.” The one that seems they have it all figured out. They share loving glances, balance tasks and even hold hands as if they were still dating. The couple that you can tell will be growing old together. What you don’t see is the hard work they put into their relationship, the bumps in the road they navigated, and, yes, the crashes they might have had on their journey. The first thing you should realize is that no relationship is “perfect.” The second? Stop comparing yourself to other couples. Meredith Keller, director of Couples Therapy Center of New Jersey in Basking Ridge has been helping couples identify and resolve core issues in their relationships and develop the skills to keep their unions strong long-term. She shares some of her wisdom here.
There are two ways: We teach couples skills that will develop healthy communication and intimacy, and as licensed therapists, we help them explore their issues to discover the root cause. For example, an argument over how a dishwasher is loaded is not about the dishwasher. It could really be about a partner feeling uncared for, not listened to or disrespected. We use three couples therapy theories: Imago Relationship Therapy, Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. The skills help strengthen their communication, enhance their sexual connection and help partners convey their love and appreciation. We want couples to use these tools and skills between sessions so that these actions become their new normal. We also run men’s and women’s relationship groups for individuals whose partners are not interested in counseling and a Gottman couples workshop called “Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.”
WHAT SHOULD COUPLES EXPECT WHEN THEY SEEK COUNSELING? Every couple is different, but there is something magic about 12 meetings. It’s enough time for them to discover new insights, to feel heard, to learn how to tolerate the emotions that arise, become more vulnerable and learn and apply the skills we teach. If they can do that work for 12 weeks, I generally find the marriage will be fine because both are showing a consistent willingness to work on the issues. CONTINUED >

HOW CAN COUPLES GET THE SPARK BACK? The key is expressing love and appreciation. How often do you think something positive about your partner but never say it? Why don’t you send them a text telling them one thing that you appreciate about them—and then watch what happens.
HOW DO PARENTS NAVIGATE THEIR RELATIONSHIP ONCE THEY HAVE CHILDREN? It’s a myth in our culture that good parents should put their children first. The alternative perspective: There is value in parents prioritizing their marriage because children observe how the parents act. If children grow up in a happy, loving household where parents model how to effectively talk through differences and show love and affection, children will use those skills when they are in their own marriage one day. Lisa Madson is most at home among the foliage and under the sky. “My patio is my studio. The natural light is there. That’s where everything happens,” says the Whitehouse Station–based artist. “This is our natural habitat. It is uplifting.” Madson was raised in a home that celebrated art and nature: Her mother taught her drawing; her father was a geologist. She pursued formal training at Montclair State University, then spent a career teaching others, in public and private schools and directing workshops. But a shift came when she got involved with the Nature Printing Society, an international group that promotes direct printing from nature. “That's where things started to blossom,” she says. Her art is created through a steam transfer process called “eco-dying,” in which natural elements such as leaves and ferns are printed on damp paper or canvas using tannins, carbon and ink over a steam tray. After printing, Madson adds watercolor, glues the paper to a wooden board and covers it with wax, which she scrapes and polishes, warming the wax until it coats the piece in a fine sheen. It’s a process that demands patience. “During printing, you feel anxious and want to pull the paper apart right away, but it’s better to let it sit,” she says. “Then, once you pull it apart, it is always a surprise.” A large piece, like 36-inches by 48-inches, can take her up to two months to complete.

Madson’s art is as compelling as it is breathtaking. It is a call to action. “We all have a pressing worry that our natural resources are getting whittled away. I bring something beautiful from nature into the public view, with the hope that it will motivate people,” she says. “Maybe it will prompt them to join a local environmental organization or pick up a bag of trash in the park.” Her works have been exhibited in juried shows at the Monmouth Museum, Somerville Library, Ringwood Manor Art Association, Hunterdon Art Museum, New Jersey Highlands Commission and the Audubon Society in Pennsylvania, to name just a few.
This summer, she will direct a nature-based art enrichment program at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown and has an upcoming installation on the grounds of Ringwood Manor in Passaic County. Madson implores people to seek opportunities to view art and to buy pieces from artists. “Go to art shows and galleries or buy something from the library or a student rather than pick up a machine-made decorative piece from a store,” she says. “Original art is so personal and it feels good to support the local arts community.”

Shari DiBrito recalls one of her first deliveries as a home chef for Lasagna Love. “I brought a meal to a hotel on Route 22 that served as a homeless shelter,” she says. “Living where we are, it’s easy to assume that everyone has what they need, but with that delivery, it hit me that it is our neighbors who are struggling.” Seeking to do safe volunteering during the pandemic shutdown, DiBrito came across Lasagna Love, a national organization with satellite operations in Canada and Australia, that pairs home cooks with people in their community who could use a
mood-boosting dinner. When the Bridgewater resident learned there was no one leading the New Jersey area, she jumped to the task. Now, the New Jersey regional director, DiBrito reports that the state has about 1,000 active volunteer chefs and more who cook on occasion. “Our motto is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities by providing food to those in need,” DiBrito says. “It’s about families helping families and neighbors helping neighbors.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Here’s how it works: People can request for themselves or nominate someone who can use a home cooked lasagna through the Lasagna Love website. “We don’t judge. People can get a lasagna simply because they ask for one or because someone thinks they need one. They could be having financial problems, caring for someone who is sick or going through a hard time. Maybe it is for a stressed-out mom who doesn’t know how she will get the next meal on the table,” she says. “We also cook for food banks.” Once a request is placed, the system will match the recipient with a chef, who will contact them via text to discuss the number of people to be served, dietary restrictions and preferences. Home cooks can volunteer based on their availability—once a week, twice a month, once every other month or just one time— the distance they are willing to travel and the type of lasagna they would like to cook. Lasagna Love offers everything from gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options to dietary restrictions such as pork-free meals. Lasagnas are delivered already cooked for reheating, assembled and ready to bake, frozen or piping hot from the chef’s oven to the recipient’s table. “I most love delivering a lasagna hot from my oven to someone’s table because I know that the family will be immediately sitting down together,” DiBrito says. Lasagna Love accepts donations for non-perishable ingredients that go into a lasagna—“from noodles to spices!” DiBrito says—and people also can make tax-deductible monetary donations to the main organization through the website. Local gift card donations can be arranged through DiBrito. The organization provides volunteering opportunities for community groups, children who are seeking community service hours and families that want to give back. “I am so grateful to the people who have donated supplies, cooked, helped spread the word or otherwise have gotten involved,” DiBrito says. “It’s a little way that we can make a big impact in making our communities stronger.” Get involved at lasagnalove.org. 1 lb ground beef ¾ to 1 lb sweet or hot Italian sausage 1 large onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced (or 2 tsp garlic powder) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 (28 oz) cans of crushed tomatoes (or your favorite sauce) 1 (15 oz) container of ricotta 4 c shredded mozzarella, divided 1 large egg, beaten 1/4 c chopped fresh basil (substitute 2 tbsp of dried) 1/2 c grated Parmesan, divided 12 regular-length lasagna noodles 2 tbs chopped fresh parsley leaves (optional)
Preheat oven to 375° F. Lightly oil (or coat with nonstick spray) a 9 × 13 baking dish. In a large skillet over medium high heat, add ground beef, sausage, onion and garlic. Cook until meat has browned, about 3 to 5 minutes. Crumble the meat as it cooks and season with salt and pepper. Drain excess fat. Stir in tomatoes until well combined. Simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta, 1/2 cup mozzarella, egg, basil and 1/4 cup Parmesan. Set aside. Spread 1 cup tomato mixture onto the bottom of the baking dish, top with three lasagna noodles, 1/2 of the ricotta cheese mixture, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, 2 cups tomato mixture. Repeat with a second layer (pressing lightly after adding noodles). Top with remaining noodles and tomato mixture. Cover tightly with foil. Bake for 45 minutes or hot and until bubbling. Remove foil and top with remaining Parmesan and mozzarella. Bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Cool for 15 minutes. Garnish with parsley, if desired.
