Our fashion spreads focus on stylish ensembles from local boutiques like the Pretty Pink Rooster and Jaipur Loft, which will keep you looking chic all season long. We personally can’t get enough of the jewel-toned accessories in the stores and hope they are here to stay! In “Dress Brilliantly,” stylist Liana Galardi-Murgola recommends investing in your wardrobe basics that can be spruced up to look like whole new ensembles through a little bit of layering. Fun fact: Galardi-Murgola actually took a stab at updating my personal closet. If you spot me in more blazers this fall, it’s thanks to her influence. Although I didn’t give her access to my leggings or t-shirt drawers, so the “old me” may be making an appearance, too.

GOOD TIMES

Broadway Comes to the Commons On June 26, Bridgewater Commons partnered with American Theater Group, Somerset County’s newest professional theater company, to produce the free show “Broadway at the Commons.” Cast members from ATG’s production of “The Bridges of Madison County” performed iconic Broadway tunes and the Bernards Township School District’s Ridge Drama Club sang highlights from their recent sold-out musical “Cats.”

Stateside Tap + Tavern Ribbon Cutting On June 30, Jeff Linzenbold, managing partner of Stateside Tap + Tavern in Somerset, cut the ceremonial ribbon inside the restaurant lobby, surrounded by members of the Somerset County Business Partnership, elected officials and well-wishers. The restaurant, which features American fare, craft beers, artisan cocktails and a great atmosphere for lunch, dinner or a night out, opened in fall 2020.

JAIPUR LOFT IS A FAMILY AFFAIR. Owner Manisha Chilka opened the Indian boutique with her daughter and business partner, Akshita, in 2019, to share the artistry of her hometown of Jaipur, India, with fashion lovers in the United States. Their online shop and by-appointment boutique in Bridgewater specializes in handcrafted scarves, jewelry and home decor that pays homage to the rich and vibrant artisan culture of Jaipur, India. The selection includes imported items made by artisans in Jaipur as well as some of their own unique designs that are created using ancient techniques in a modern style. Both Chilka and her daughter are passionate about sharing their culture. Their business idea took root while they were visiting family in Jaipur in 2018. They immersed themselves in the villages and began connecting with artisans and vendors that they still work with today. CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) Of particular note are their handblock print scarves. Created from handwoven silk, chiffon and cotton fabrics, the elegant accessories are decorated with a plant-based dye that is imprinted onto the fabric by wooden blocks that are carved with intricate designs. “It’s an ancient art—a craft that takes years to master,” Chilka explains. “Jaipur artisans hand-carved every single one of these unique designs. It’s a long process but a beautiful outcome.” Jewelry is Chilka’s speciality. For years, she made jewelry for family and friends; opening the boutique is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Chilka’s jewelry—a selection of silver and gemstone necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings—are either handcrafted by her or by Jaipur artisans who bring her designs to life using local materials. Akshita views Jaipur Loft as a connection to her family’s cultural roots. “We’re working directly with master artisans who have learned their craft by hand over many generations,” she says. “The story behind us is what propels us, and it is something I really appreciate about what we do.” Browse Jaipur Loft’s designs at jaipurloft.etsy.com and facebook.com/jaipurloft.

LIANA GALARDI-MURGOLA OF BE BRILLIANT STYLING SHOWS YOU HOW TO CREATE A WARDROBE TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR UNIQUE PERSONALITY

LIANA GALARDI-MURGOLA HAS LOVED CLOTHING HER ENTIRE LIFE. She always dreamed of working with fashion, but even more world,” she says. Her epiphany came after she earned a degree in psychology and was doing personal styling at Nordstrom. “I was building

appreciation of women’s unique bodies. “The idea is that if young women and adolescent girls can be empowered to see and speak about themselves in a positive light, then we can shift the conversation about beauty and self-image worldwide and empower our future generations.” When Galardi-Murgola decided to focus on Be Brilliant Styling full-time six years ago, she brought that same philosophy to her clients through one-on-one styling. When she meets new clients, the first step is to bring clarity to their wardrobe. “People need to edit their wardrobe to see what’s working, what’s not and why,” she says. “We first define who they are and what they want to communicate to the world.” Using the client’s signature style as a basis, they then create a shopping strategy, buying new items with intention so they only purchase what is truly needed. the outfit. “We figure out how to put everything together to maximize their investment on new clothing and a return on investment for what is in their closet,” she says. According to Galardi-Murgola, people wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time. “You think having a lot of things in your closet will give you versatility, but in reality, you don’t need that much,” she says. “If you repeat items—especially if you are using accessories or layering pieces with intention—you can change it up and people won’t notice. This intention is what gives you your signature look.” A big reason people only wear 20% of their wardrobe is because much of their pieces are flair, not basics. Galardi-Murgola says 70% of your wardrobe should be a solid foundation of neutral pieces and versatile, basic silhouettes that can go with a lot of items and 30% should be the personality fashion. “This will give you the ability to wear more of your clothes,” she says. A repeating concern Galardi-Murgola sees is that women think something is wrong with their bodies because they have trouble finding clothing that fits them off the rack. “You have to realize it’s the clothes—not you,” she says. “It’s actually uncommon for people to be able to wear things off the rack and have them fit with no alteration.” People should rethink how they shop, she says. For example, even if you consider yourself in the “normal” range, depending on your body, you may need to shop in the petite section for either tops or bottoms. And petites perhaps could find a better fit in the juniors section. Galardi-Murgola also notes that sizes do not necessarily go up incrementally by scale, and some women should consider looking in the plus section.

Navy and Medium Blue Are Universally Flattering Colors

“If plus sizes are cut properly, they will not be using the same pattern and just making the size larger; they actually will use different patterns. So, the plus size might be better for some women’s bodies.”

In the spirit of the Brazen Beauty Project, she

N Y FOR JEFF LINZENBOLD, THE DREAM STARTED IN CHILDHOOD. When he was a kid, he worked in the dining and hospitality industry with his father. “My dad was an accountant and worked for a catering company in the kitchen on weekends. When I was 14, I began working there, too, bussing tables and running fries. At first, it was just something fun to do with my father, but I fell in love with the industry,” he says. By the time he was 15, Linzenbold had worked his way up to prep cook. In the front of the house, he eventually rose to head server. After bartending for about a decade, he transitioned to restaurant management, country club management and corporate dining, including managing the corporate dining at HBO’s New York City headquarters.

Jeff Linzenbold, Managing Partner

After climbing to the ranks of Director of Operations at Dartcor Food Services, Linzenbold’s momentum came to a sudden halt due to the pandemic. He was forced to re-think his direction. “I’d been wanting to open a restaurant for years, and in April 2020, I found an amazing venue for sale with a liquor license,” he says. “My business partners and I jumped at the opportunity.” The location in Somerset, a former sports bar, needed some updates, but Linzenbold realized its potential. “I saw the huge outdoor dining space and large main dining room and knew it was the perfect fit,” he says. He renovated the space to give it a chic industrial feel with a polished concrete floor, wainscoting and rustic wooden tables. Stateside Tap + Tavern opened in October 2020 for takeout and welcomed indoor diners the following month. Under the guidance of head chef Michael Delgado, the menu offers something for everyone. His culinary creations include their classic Stateside Burger (cheddar, bacon onion jam, fried shallots and horseradish sauce), Hot Nashville Chicken (buttermilk marinated chicken sandwich with pineapple slaw) and Short Rib Poutine (braised short rib with horseradish aioli and cheese curds). To wash it all down, you can select from 24 beers on tap; the restaurant has a focus on local breweries like Czig Meister in Hackettstown and Eight & Sand Beer Co. in Woodbury. And if you’re a sports lover, rejoice: There are 10 bar-side TVs to catch the game with friends. Visit Stateside Tap + Tavern’s menu at statesidetapandtavern.com. CONTINUED >

ENCOURAGE THE KIDS TO PICK OUT A GOOD BOOK, EXPLORE NEW WORLDS AND EXPAND THEIR MINDS DURING NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH

PROMOTING LITERACY AT A YOUNG AGE IS VITAL TO A CHILD’S FUTURE SUCCESS. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 54 percent of people aged 16 to 74 read below the equivalent of a sixth grade level. However, literacy is a predictor of financial stability. A study by the Barbara Bush Foundation found the average annual income of adults declines with their reading level: Those who read at a sixth grade level earn about $63,000 and those who read below a third grade level earn $34,000. To help promote literacy, here are a few fun, colorful books by Central New Jersey authors that encourage kids to shut off the television, log off the tech and pick up a book.

01 Speech Class Rules: An Introduction to Speech Therapy for Children, by Ronda Wojcicki “Both language and literacy develop from infancy through school age, so it’s important to both verbally interact with and read to children from the very start,” says Wojcicki, a speech language pathologist. “Many studies have shown that early literacy results in later academic success.”

02 Old Farmers Road School, by Loren Spiotta-DiMare “With ever-increasing technology, children can lose the joy and fascination of reading a good book,” says Spiotta-DiMare, an award-winning author. “There’s just nothing like holding a book in one’s hands, reading and flipping through the pages. This is especially true of children’s picture books, which have

colorful illustrations and each scene is a mini cliffhanger.”

03 The Little Girl Who Lost Her Words, by MJ Zonfrillo “Literacy is the foundation for all learning,” says Zonfrillo, a grandmother and first-time author. “There is not one subject
