Do you like the gorgeous wreath on our cover? If you’re even a little bit crafty, then you can make your own by utilizing the wreath making tips from Lucy Sandler of House of Blooms on Page 33. I’m someone who falls more in the “Pinterest Fail” category, so I’d rather purchase one directly from Sandler herself. The same goes for making hot cocoa bombs. The recipe on Page 36 from Blue Sheep Bake Shop will make you the hostess hero. These bombs are all the rage right now, and while I don’t have the talent or patience to make my own, I know where I can purchase these beautiful and tasty bombs to woo the crowd. There’s something so satisfying about pouring the boiling milk over the cocoa bombs and watching them explode.

“BALLROOM DANCING,” DECLARES MICHELLE GARCED, “WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. It will make you look better and feel better, and it will keep your brain sharp.” Michelle and her light-fantastic feet are proof-positive of the transformative sway of the swing, the rhythm of the rumba and the redhot-heartthrob of the Argentine tango. She and her husband, Emilio, who met on the dance floor and have been cha-chaing together for nearly a half-century, are the longtime owners of three award-winning Arthur Murray Dance Centers.

When Emilio waltzed into her life, Michelle was a manager at an Arthur Murray studio in Jersey City. “We turned him away because he wasn’t 18,” Michelle says. “A year later, he came back—on his birthday—because he wanted to learn the hustle and the salsa, which were quite popular then.” After a few lessons, Emilio was so hooked that he signed on as an instructor. In less time than it takes to do the two-step, friendship turned to romance, and five years later, they were married.

Many students start with a sample lesson then sign on for programs that allow them to discover which dances they want to concentrate on. “We’re a dance family, and we host social dancing events for our students,” Michelle says. “We teach a lot of couples classes, but you don’t need a partner. You can dance with an instructor.” The social aspects of ballroom dancing have made the pastime particularly popular post-pandemic. “People find that it builds self-confidence and helps them get back into things after being isolated for such a long time,” she says. “The number of people who are coming has doubled in volume because they appreciate what was taken away during the COVID lockdowns.” Michelle, who is 69, and Emilio, who is 61, still make time to dance together when they’re not teaching classes, training teachers or taking courses. They have no intention of ever stepping back from the business. “We love what we do,” Michelle says. “In addition to teaching tried-and-true traditional dances and fad dances, we teach manners and etiquette. We are the last stronghold of the social graces; we have to keep the tradition alive.” Michelle and Emilio just had their first grandchild, and it goes without saying that her first steps will be on the dance floor. “She’s only six months old,” Michelle says, “but that will happen.” Book dance lessons at amdancing.com. 22

You can also select a quality artificial green.) + 2–3 types of accents (Sandler likes to use eucalyptus greens and pinecones.) + A 12-inch to 16-inch ring or hoop (You can purchase this from any craft store, either a simple ring or a specific wreath base. A wreath base will give a more structured look.) + 22 gauge floral wire cut into 5”–6” strips + Wire cutter + Garden shears + Ribbon or twine for hanging or a wreath holder for display

Instructions :: STEP 1 :: Place newspaper on your workspace or be in a space that is easy to clean up. :: S TE P 2 :: Separate out your different foliage and accents. :: S TE P 3 :: Make 18 to 20 bunches of mixed foliage, each about 6” to 8” long. Use at least one sprig of every type of foliage; if you want a fuller wreath, use two sprigs. Bind them at the base with floral wire. :: S TE P 4 :: Attach the bunches to your ring or wreath base one by one using the wire, overlapping them slightly in a clockwise fashion. Be sure to wrap each bunch tightly a couple of times to ensure everything is secure. :: S TE P 5 :: Adjust as needed. Take a step back and see if you have any holes. You may need to add another bunch to fill out the wreath perfectly. :: S TE P 6 :: Add accents with floral wire. THERE IS SOMETHING MESMERIZING ABOUT HOT COCOA BOMBS. Last year, these delicious spheres were ubiquitous on Instagram and TikTok. We watched them being dropped into warm milk, cracking open and releasing a flurry of hot cocoa mix, marshmallows and other treats until—poof!—there appeared a steaming cup that warms the soul as much as its creation captures the imagination. Karin Giamella, owner of Blue Sheep Bake Shop in Somerville, heard about this hot trend last holiday from her daughter, Phoenix, who was captivated by the exploding hollow chocolate balls on TikTok and begged her mother to make them. Not intending them for retail, Giamella posted a photo and her phone started blowing up with customers who wanted a taste. She purchased machines and rented a kitchen to accommodate the influx of orders. The hot cocoa bombs, which come in a variety of flavors such as vanilla and cinnamon toast crunch, populate Blue Sheep’s holiday gift boxes. “We offer a deluxe set for a family of four, which has four cocoa bombs with toppings like caramel, marshmallows, fluff and candies like chocolate-covered caramels and chocolate-covered Oreos,” she says. “We also offer a smaller set with two cocoa bombs.” Besides the hot cocoa bombs, the most popular holiday orders are gift items, such as a cookie box containing a collection of mini cookies in a wooden box, and their signature cake and a Rudolph cake,

Giamella recommends customers make special orders, such as for the Tres Leches cake, as early as possible as they usually hit capacity two weeks before the holiday. Hot Cocoa Bombs + 1/2 c granulated sugar + 1/4 c cocoa powder + Mini marshmallows + 32 oz melting chocolate wafers + Chocolate Bomb Mold (can be purchased online or local baking supply store) Combine sugar and cocoa powder, set aside. Place clean, dry plastic cocoa bomb molds on a flat surface, open side up. In medium-sized microwave-safe plastic bowl, melt wafers in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is just melted. Fill mold cavities to the top, scrape chocolate off the top to remove excess. Let sit for 5 minutes. Set in freezer/refrigerator for a few minutes until the chocolate easily pops out of the shell. Place chocolate bombs on a cookie tray lined with parchment paper. Place an aluminum cookie tray on top of 3 inches of simmering water to heat the tray to flatten out the bomb for a clean edge. Split the bombs in half to make bottoms and tops. Using food serving gloves, run the open end of the cocoa bomb down the cookie tray to smooth and flatten the bottom. Place on parchment-lined tray with flattened side down. Place the bomb bottoms into the cavities of a cupcake baking pan. Add 2 tbs of the cocoa mix to each bottom. Fill with mini marshmallows. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”
