The Gentlemen’s Issue
It’s time to celebrate the men in our lives!
One of the men in my life that I am most grateful for is my dad. Between being a business owner and having two daughters, he always has his hands full, yet he still makes time for me, my sister, and my mom.

From a young age, he’s inspired me to be a hard worker and go after what I want. When I was a kid, there was a dollhouse that I really wanted. After showing it to my dad, he knew he could build me an even better one, so he took me to Home Depot, bought the supplies, let me pick the paint colors for my dollhouse, and built a dollhouse that was beyond my wildest dreams.
Throughout my childhood, I used the dollhouse dozens of times, whether I’d be playing alone or with my friends, but it was more special than any other dollhouse because he took the time to carefully create my dream dollhouse. Although I’ve outgrown it, the dollhouse is still kept at my parents' house, and I can’t wait to give it to my daughter one day so she can play with it.
Let your father or father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. If you are a dad, let me be the first to say thank you. You are invaluable to the people you know and the people around you.
Enjoy our gentlemen’s issue!

Hearing With Your Heart
You deserve to hear better. Hearing connects us to the world and to one another. Not hearing well triggers a feeling of disconnect and isolation, making social situations that once were fun bring dread. In addition to improving your hearing, we empower you to restore your sense of wholeness and youthfulness. The majority of people with changes in their hearing are under the age of 65 - years of listening to loud music or operating noisy equipment without protection, common health conditions, and genetics can all impact the ability to hear. If you’re hearing differently than you used to, come in for an evaluation. Be proactive now to prevent additional loss later. Learning to hear better is a team effort, and support is part of the journey - and of course we’re with you every step of the way.

Heirlooms watches never go out of of style
Time-Honored
Legacies
Since Salem Emamalie founded Brentwood Jewelry over 50 years ago, it has become a multi-generational family business. Three of his sons, a daughter, and a slew of nephews have continued to uphold the high-caliber quality and service that has made the store a go-to destination for jewelry, watches, and gifts.
“I’ve been involved with the business in some way my whole life,” says son Brandon, who joined full-time in 2003. He’s witnessed many trends come and go, and Brentwood Jewelry has always kept up with the times while honoring traditional favorites.

One item that is as in-demand today as it was 50 years ago is the mechanical watch. Whether for a Father’s Day gift, to mark a graduation, or to celebrate other occasions, watches have always been a popular choice. Many high-quality watches are also passed down from generation to generation, and their owners continue to cherish them.
“What makes heirloom watches so special is their sentimental value and the fact that they can never be replicated or replaced,” he says. “Some of these watches have been passed down over multiple decades, and they have these nostalgic looks that are unique and different. No one else can easily get it; it's all yours.”
Brentwood Jewelry offers many heirloom-quality watches for those who want to enjoy a great piece now and then one day pass it on. “When some people think of heirloom, they think generational,” says Brandon. “But, it doesn't necessarily have to be generations. It could be a dad passing it to a son today. Heirloom simply means quality versus time. When you invest in an heirloom quality piece, it gives you that option.”
Customers who come in looking for heirloom-quality watches range from young professionals in their 20s and 30s to grandparents celebrating their grandkids' birthdays. Dads often purchase them for their children’s graduations, while other times it’s sons choosing a watch to present to their fathers upon retirement. A gift of a watch crosses generations and commemorates many special moments in time
Surprisingly, many younger people are going back to the simplicity and style of a basic watch.
“Years ago, when smart watches started coming out, we saw a huge decline in watch sales in general across the board. But fast forward, and it kind of reverted to the opposite. Now smartwatch sales are down, and higher-end mechanical watch sales are back up.” The reasons given are that people are tired of being constantly connected and having something on their wrist vibrating and dinging.

“WHAT MAKES HEIRLOOM WATCHES SO SPECIAL IS THEIR SENTIMENTAL VALUE, AND THE FACT THAT THEY CAN NEVER BE REPLICATED OR REPLACED,” HE SAYS.
“SOME OF THESE WATCHES HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN OVER MULTIPLE DECADES, AND THEY HAVE THESE NOSTALGIC LOOKS THAT ARE UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT.”

Hamilton Ventura Quartz

So, what brands of heirloom-quality watches are popular in the store today? “Bremont watches are our flagship watch when it comes to us being an authorized dealer,” says Salem’s other son, Blake. “We are one of the very few in the U.S. that carry them. I personally found out about them from my favorite movie, Kingsman , and after doing some research, found out that they are a family business like ours. I then pursued trying to get them.” The Bremont Supermarine 300M Date and the Lady K are just two of the options they carry.
Other premium brands include Hamilton, which was founded in the U.S. in the 1800s. It's Ventura Elvis80 Auto made watchmaking history as the world's first electrical, battery-powered watch.
Of course, the iconic brand Rolex is also offered, and customers may choose the Submariner Date Oyster, the Cosmograph Daytona Oyster, and more.
Adds Brandon, “True heirloom brands that real collectors want are the boutique-style watches. These are your Bremont, Oris, and Longines with limited-edition runs.”
Brentwood Jewelry is also able to repair most watches. “Anything with moving mechanical parts has to be serviced at some point, and most people choose to have these watches fixed over buying a new one,” he says. “You might have spent $800 or up on a watch and now, 10 or 12 years down the road, that same watch is $1,500.”
Taking care of these timepieces so they can become heritage pieces is essential. “The key is regular maintenance and servicing, which is typically

every five to seven years,” says Blake. “During servicing, the watchmaker will clean the movement, lubricate the parts, and replace worn components.”
He also recommends cleaning the watch at home with a soft cloth, storing it in a cool, dry place, and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures, impacts, or magnetic fields. Also, keep your watch wound, but don't wind it on your wrist. Be sure to check the gaskets and seals regularly, too.
“When in doubt, bring it to a watchmaker,” he says. “These few steps will ensure the long life of a timepiece for your family.”
Stop by Brentwood Jewelry to find your next heirloom-quality watch for your own family to enjoy for generations. Every time they look at the time, they’ll be reminded of its legacy.

RED’S all natural

FOUNDER MIKE ADAIR FINDS COMMUNITY IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE
ARTICLE BY MYRA SIMMONS MCENTIRE
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY RED’S ALL NATURAL

Mike Adair founded Red’s All Natural in 2009 while earning his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Since then, Red’s has landed the number one spot in the premium frozen food brand for their protein-packed burritos and breakfast sandwiches. City Lifestyle spoke to Mike regarding his initial move to middle Tennessee, how his family found community here, and about Red, the dog that inspired the brand’s name.
Red’s All Natural was born while Mike was working on his Master’s in New Hampshire. He and his wife, Paige, used to host “Taco Tuesdays” for fellow students. The shining star of those evenings was Paige’s famed burritos, so popular that there was a waitlist of people who wanted to try them. Magic happened the week that Mike had an assignment due for his entrepreneurial class. The popularity of Paige’s burritos convinced him to pivot the recipe into the execution of his project. The company name was inspired by his rescue dog, and the concept of Red’s All Natural became a business plan.
Mike and Paige decided to move to Tennessee after Red’s was founded, while living in a Connecticut commuter town near New York City. With no need to go into the city for work, and extended family already settled in middle Tennessee, a change was in order. “We came down to visit, trying to figure out a potential area to move to. We fell in love. The decision was made on the plane ride back.” After living and working all over the United States, the two found the area extremely welcoming. “The culture here is old school Southern with a little bit of a college vibe. Throw in the music, and it just had a nice combination of things that made it super cool.”
Since Red’s All Natural was created through a community, we asked Mike how he’s experienced community in Nashville. “There’s a constant influx of humans coming here with different backgrounds, geographies, and perspectives, alongside the folks who are from here. It's been a constant evolution of culture that I’ve found super interesting. It’s an open-minded energy of Southern hospitality with great culture and diversity. It’s felt like family since the moment we got here. We’re getting all of those different traditions that they're bringing – food, music, culture – a blend of diversity, thought, religion, communication styles, and that gives us the opportunity to connect on so many different levels with so many different people.”
picked at the peak of freshness.” He says the advent of the air fryer elevated the way consumers prepared frozen goods (food). “We were missing a way to reheat products that gave people an incredible experience. Not all food responds well to a microwave, especially premium bread. The air fryer is much more bulletproof and solves that problem.”
Red’s is on a mission to cook food better for people with big things to do.
As for his company, Mike believes frozen foods are due for a reboot. “There’s always been a weird perception of frozen food. I grew up in the era of TV dinners. Fast forward twenty or thirty years, and the freezer is arguably the best technology we have in order to provide incredible fresh food to the most amount of people as efficiently as humanly possible. Everything we make is
Finally, City Lifestyle wanted to know a little bit more about Red, the shelter dog who inspired the brand name. “He was the absolute best. I accidentally adopted Red from a shelter in Tacoma, Washington, when I was wearing a suit and tie in between meetings. I got to the last cage, and there were three dogs. Two were barking, and one of them was in a corner, being quiet. He was a skinny, half-balding, reddish mutt that was looking at me like, ‘Dude. Please.’ He came home with me that day and didn’t leave my side for the next twelve years.”

Kirsten Atkinson blends skill, creativity, and an easygoing spirit to craft sharp, effortless looks for men both in the salon and on set. A trusted name in the world of celebrity grooming, she’s worked behind the scenes on TV shows, movies, and with some of the industry’s biggest names — always delivering styles that look as good on camera as they do in real life. Brentwood Lifestyle got a chance to sit down with her and discuss all things hair care for men.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR HAIRSTYLES FOR MEN RIGHT NOW?
I believe that the current trend among men leans towards a more relaxed, lived-in style. I've been assisting many of my clients in growing out their hair and achieving a relaxed yet structured hairstyle that seamlessly fits their lifestyle. Most of my male clients prefer a low-maintenance hair routine, so it's essential to consider their individual hair types and recommend the best effortless styles for them. One of the most enjoyable aspects of this process has been witnessing men rediscover their natural hair texture. It's fascinating to see some clients realize they have a hair type they were previously unaware of!
MEN'S HAIR
101
Expert Hair Advice for Men from Celebrity Stylist
Kirsten Atkinson
Hair texture plays a significant role in determining the styling choices available to individuals. Different textures—such as straight, wavy, curly, or coily—each come with unique characteristics that influence how hair behaves and responds to products and techniques. For instance, straight hair may hold styles with less effort, while wavy and curly textures often require specific products to enhance and define their natural shape.
Additionally, understanding one’s hair texture can help in selecting the right tools and methods for styling, ensuring that the chosen look is both achievable and sustainable. For example, individuals with coily hair might benefit from moisture-rich products and protective styles, while those with wavy hair may find that a simple texturizing spray enhances their natural waves. Ultimately, embracing one's hair texture can lead to more personalized and effective styling choices that reflect individual preferences and lifestyles.

HOW CAN SOMEONE FIGURE OUT THEIR HAIR TYPE?
I highly recommend starting with a thorough consultation with a professional hairstylist, as this is often the easiest and most effective way to determine your hair type. However, if you prefer a more hands-on approach, you can identify your hair type by focusing on two key factors: your curl pattern and the thickness of your hair. Begin by assessing your curl pattern, which can be categorized as straight, wavy, curly, or tightly curled. Next, evaluate the thickness of your hair, which can be classified as fine, medium, or coarse. By combining these two aspects, you can accurately define your hair type and make more informed decisions about styling and care.
WHAT IS A HAIR STYLING TIP THAT MOST MEN DON’T DO?
One of the most significant mistakes I observe among men is not seeking the expertise of a professional stylist or barber. I hate to break it to you, but this can make a noticeable difference! When it comes to daily styling at home, many men are unaware of how to properly apply products or fully utilize a blow dryer.
I always recommend using a quality shampoo and conditioner suitable for all hair types, and I encourage clients to choose products they resonate with. Personally, I’m a big fan of Milbon products. For styling, a game-changing tip is to apply your paste, pomade, or pre-styler while your hair is still wet—yes, you heard that right—before drying it. Then, use a blow dryer (or a diffuser for curls) and finish with your preferred finishing products, such as hairspray, wax, or texturizing powders.
A few of my go-to products for everyday styling include Milbon Matte Texture Paste, Milbon Satin Texturizing Cream, Milbon Wet Shine Cream, and Milbon Dry Texturizing Spray. These products can really elevate your styling routine!
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR CELEBRITY CLIENTS?
For the past six years, I have had the privilege of working on set and touring more exclusively with the Grammy-winning country duo Dan + Shay. Additionally, I've had the pleasure of collaborating with other talented artists, including Thomas Rhett, Ben Rector, Dylan Marlow, and comedians Matt Rife and Nate Bargatze.
DO CELEBRITIES AND SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON MEN'S HAIR TRENDS?
I personally believe that celebrity influence plays a significant role in hairstyling choices. Frequently, I receive images of celebrities from clients who aspire to replicate a particular look. Often, these pictures feature current 'hot' celebrities who are prominent in movies or on the radio. This trend highlights how popular culture can inspire individual styling decisions and shape our perceptions of what’s fashionable.
Social media platforms play a crucial role in influencing consumer behavior in the fashion and beauty industries. They serve as powerful tools for brands and influencers to showcase their products, trends, and styles to a vast audience. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest allow users to discover new looks, tutorials, and product recommendations, creating an immediate and visual way to engage with fashion and beauty.
Influencers, in particular, have a significant impact; their endorsements can sway followers’ purchasing decisions and introduce them to new brands or products. User-generated content, such as reviews and styling tips, further enhances trust and authenticity, encouraging consumers to try new items.
Moreover, social media fosters a sense of community, where users can share their own experiences and styles, amplifying trends and creating a feedback loop that continuously shapes consumer preferences. Overall, the visual and interactive nature of social media makes it an essential driver of consumer behavior in these industries.
IF THERE IS ONE TYPE OF HAIR PRODUCT THAT MEN SHOULD INVEST IN, WHAT SHOULD IT BE?
I believe that every man should invest in a high-quality matte texturizing paste. Look for one that offers a gentle hold and a versatile texturing effect. A common request I receive is from men wanting to achieve a less "clean" look after washing their hair, and this type of product is perfect for that purpose.
Matte texturizing paste is easy to emulsify in your hands, allowing for even distribution throughout the hair. It’s also great for those days when you need to air dry in a hurry. This product is quick, simple, and can easily be incorporated into any hair care routine.

WHAT DO YOU PREDICT WILL BE THE NEXT BIG TREND IN MEN’S HAIRSTYLES?
Trends have become increasingly difficult to pinpoint, especially on a regional level. However, I’ve noticed a resurgence of styles from the late '80s and early '90s making a comeback. I predict that we’ll see a blend of modern and classic styles emerging, with an emphasis on texture and an effortlessly cool aesthetic.
Key looks likely to trend include short shags, tapered short mullets, classic yet undone pompadours, side parts, and natural curls. It seems that more men are becoming invested in their hair, recognizing its potential to complement their personal style or even serve as a bold statement. This shift reflects a growing awareness of grooming and self-expression in men’s fashion.
The resurgence of late '80s and early '90s styles reflects a broader trend where nostalgia plays a significant role in fashion and grooming. This era is characterized by unique haircuts and styles that are being reinterpreted for modern sensibilities. Here are some key aspects to consider:
1. Short Shags and Tapered Short Mullets: These hairstyles combine a laid-back vibe with a bit of edge. The short shag, with its layered texture, offers a relaxed, tousled look, while the tapered mullet gives a nod to retro flair while being updated for a contemporary audience.
2. Classic Yet Undone Pompadours: The pompadour has long been a classic style, but the modern take emphasizes a more casual, 'undone' appearance. This allows for versatility, where the style can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
3. Side Parts and Natural Curls: The side part is making a comeback, offering a clean, sophisticated look that adds structure to various styles. Natural curls are also gaining popularity, as more men embrace their hair texture rather than trying to tame it, celebrating individuality and authenticity.
4. Focus on Texture: Modern hair products that enhance texture, such as matte pastes and texturizing sprays, are crucial in achieving these styles. The emphasis on texture allows for a more relaxed, lived-in look, which aligns well with the current desire for an effortless aesthetic.
5. Growing Interest in Hair Care: There’s a noticeable shift in how men approach grooming. Many are investing time and resources into hair care products and routines, recognizing that well-styled hair can elevate their overall appearance and serve as a form of self-expression.
This evolution reflects a broader cultural shift where grooming and personal style are seen as vital components of one's identity, allowing men to express their individuality and confidence.

Hair Myths and The Reality:
Cutting Hair Makes It Grow Faster:
Reality: Hair grows from the follicle beneath the scalp. Regular trims help maintain healthy ends, preventing breakage, but they don’t influence the growth rate. The average hair grows about half an inch per month, regardless of trims.
You Can Train Your Hair:
Reality: While your hair won’t literally change its behavior, adjusting your washing and styling routine can lead to improvements in manageability and appearance over time.
Long Hair is Healthier than Short Hair:
Reality: Hair health is about condition, not length. Long hair can be more prone to damage and split ends, while shorter hair may be healthier overall if properly maintained.
Your Hair Will Get Used to Products:
Reality: While some products may seem less effective over time, this can be due to build-up on the hair or changes in hair condition. Regularly switching products or clarifying can help maintain effectiveness.
Coloring Hair Makes It Lose Strength:
Reality : Modern hair color technologies include conditioning agents that can help maintain hair strength and moisture. The key is to choose high-quality color products and follow up with appropriate care.
Dandruff is Caused by Dry Scalp:
Reality : Dandruff is often linked to an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus (Malassezia) or other scalp conditions. Treatments may require medicated shampoos or lifestyle changes rather than simply moisturizing.
You Can Fix Split Ends:
Reality: Once a split end forms, the only remedy is to cut it off. Products claiming to "fix" split ends may offer temporary bonding, but do not repair them. Regular trims are necessary to keep hair healthy.

Heat Styling is Always Damaging:
Reality: Heat can be damaging if used improperly, but using heat protectants and selecting the right tools can significantly reduce damage. Lower temperatures are often just as effective for styling without compromising hair health.
Natural Hair Products Are Always Better:
Reality: Some natural products can irritate sensitive scalps or fail to provide necessary moisture. It’s crucial to read labels and understand how each ingredient affects your hair. Sometimes, synthetic ingredients can deliver better results.
Hair Can Change Texture as You Age:
Reality: While the texture may not fundamentally change, factors such as hormonal shifts, health conditions, and environmental influences can affect the appearance and manageability of hair over time.
Brushing Hair 100 Strokes a Day is Necessary:
Reality: Over-brushing can lead to breakage. Instead of counting strokes, focus on gentle brushing techniques and using the right tools for your hair type. For example, wide-tooth combs are great for detangling wet hair.
All Hair Products Are Bad for Your Hair:
Reality: The effectiveness of hair products varies widely. Some contain beneficial ingredients like oils, proteins, and vitamins that can hydrate and strengthen hair. It’s important to choose products based on your hair type and concerns.
You Should Wash Your Hair Daily:
Reality: Daily washing can strip natural oils, leading to dryness and potentially causing the scalp to produce more oil to compensate. Depending on hair type (oily, dry, curly, etc.), washing every few days or once a week may be more beneficial.
Understanding these myths can empower individuals to make better choices about their hair care routines, leading to healthier and more vibrant hair.

NASHVILLE SOCCER CLUB DETAILS THEIR YOUTH SUMMER CAMPS COMING TO WILLIAMSON COUNTY.
Kicking It With Nashville SC

ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY NASHVILLE SC
“As Nashville’s pro soccer team, we want to bring soccer to kids and help them find their love for the game.”
Nashville Soccer Club has taken Music City by storm since joining Major League Soccer in 2020. Nashville SC recently announced they will be hosting its 2025 series of youth soccer camps in Williamson County in May, June, and July for boys and girls ages six to eighteen. Going on their third year, this year’s expansion will feature thirteen one-of-a-kind sessions, encouraging players of all skills to sign up and learn from some of the best. Offering a variety of camps ranging from beginner, intermediate, and advanced players, the team at Nashville SC has curated a program that has something for everyone. Intermediate players ages six to thirteen can attend nine full-day camp sessions at TOCA Nashville - a 25,000 square foot indoor soccer training facility located in Franklin. This camp will be fun, interactive, and a great way for players to enjoy the game while also sharpening their skills.
Nashville SC is also offering four half-day camp sessions tailored towards more advanced players, ages seven to eighteen, at Currey Ingram Academy - the home of the Nashville SC Academy and located right here in Brentwood. These camps will be led by the Academy staff and are perfect for higher skilled and more competitive players.
Kevin Stevenson, the Director of Youth Soccer at Nashville SC, grew up with a love for the game. Spending a lot of his childhood on the field, he pursued a collegiate career at Duke University. Stevenson was hired by Nashville SC in June of 2019 as the Director of Corporate Sponsorships and has been with the team since the beginning! After being approached about becoming the Director of Youth Soccer in 2023, he helped launch the program and transform it into what it is today.
“The goal [of these programs is] to grow the game and provide kids and our community with a unique and fun way to interact with Nashville SC outside of attending games at GEODIS Park,” Stevenson shares.
“As Nashville’s pro soccer team, we want to bring
soccer to kids and help them find their love for the game. We also want to help kids develop—as players, leaders, and fans of soccer. Soccer is a great teacher both on and off the field, helping kids learn about themselves as they grow into athletes and leaders.”
Lindsey Paola was recently named Chief Business Officer at Nashville SC. While her impressive career first began in Washington, D.C., working for the federal government, she decided shifting her focus to sports would give her the opportunity to do something fun and fast-paced, while also giving back to the community. She landed her first role with Nashville SC in 2017, serving as the Senior Director of Club Administration, and two seasons later, was promoted to Chief of Staff. In 2023, she earned the title of Chief Operating Officer and now, as the Chief Business Officer, oversees dayto-day business operations for the team. Additionally, she is one of only eight females holding a role in a similar capacity in Major League Soccer.
“The team was built by principal owner, Ingram, as a way to give something back to the city of Nashville and surrounding communities,” Paola shares. “Just like the community embraced the idea of hockey in the south in the 90s, they [also] embraced the notion of soccer in the south when the expansion announcement happened in 2017. What I love about Nashville and Middle Tennessee is that the community rallies together to support their teams. It’s all about the pride people have for the city and the region.”
With their new coach, B.J. Callaghan, in his first full season as manager, and with twelve new players on their roster, Nashville SC only continues to prove their well-deserved standing in the Major Leagues. Newly signed Midfielder, Eddi Tagseth, is in his first year with the club and ranks fourth in Major League Soccer this season in total distance covered at 81.1 miles. Tagseth details how proper coaching and lessons helped him on his journey to becoming a professional soccer player.
“I think if you have the right coaches and the right people around you, you will get better because they will give you the tips and motivation you need to train more, train better, and do the stuff that you need to do to get better,” he explains. “I think doing everything you can yourself, and also getting the right advice, are two very important things.”
“We all remember growing up and dreaming of the future, and a lot of us at Nashville SC wanted to be professional soccer players,” Stevenson adds. “If we

can play even a small role in helping kids learn the game of soccer and improve their skills while creating positive and lasting memories for them and their families, we have done our job regardless of how far they go in their journey.”

SPEND THE
IN STYLE SUMMER
ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOPHIE BROCK, TAKEN AT WAYMORE'S GUEST HOUSE & CASUAL CLUB
Award-Winning Stylist, Bentley Caldwell, Talks Men’s Fashion Tips And Summer Trends.
Summer is right around the corner, and who better to give insight on the best summer trends for men than Bentley Caldwell? The award-winning personal stylist’s expertise goes beyond the basics, rightfully earning his slot on “Nashville’s 50 Best Dressed.” Styling entrepreneurs, businessmen, celebrities, and beyond, Caldwell has been in the fashion industry for over twenty years - earning several accolades and titles for his keen eye - and thrives on helping men feel confident from the inside out. With a style that beams elegant simplicity, he appreciates quality, timeless, and unique pieces and believes accessorizing can completely transform an outfit… whether that be by adding something as simple as a watch or bracelet, or taking it to the next level and inserting a hat or trench coat.

Bentley also believes every man should invest in three things this summer: a solid pair of shorts, shoes that aren’t flip-flops, and a great pair of sunglasses. Regardless of the season, he finds that owning a good pair of dark-wash denim, quality loafers, and a fitted navy blazer can take you a long way… and all three of these items perfectly pair with a t-shirt, dress shirt, or polo, completing your look and looking good while doing it.
This summer, Bentley foresees relaxed looks being a focus for men. From linen fabrics to bandanas around the neck, he imagines looser materials, vibrant colors, and simple patterns will be a trend this season. In addition to clothing, the Kentucky native believes the right pair of shoes can transform a look; Whether it be a pair of loafers with rolled-up cuffs or Espadrilles with shorts, he finds that practical yet elevated shoes can make or break an outfit. Explaining that finding the right material can be trickier during the warmer months, he advises discovering pieces that work best with your body. While looser fit clothing is a go-to in the summer, keeping your build and body type in mind can help strengthen your look and your confidence since you want to wear the clothes, not let them wear you!

Mark my words, in the next couple years, Nashville is going to be a menswear destination city!”

A CUSTOM-MADE RELATIONSHIP

RELATIONSHIP

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALLISON ELEFANTE
When meeting a contractor, Bryan Sebring believes it’s important to treat it like any other close, personal relationship. “The number one piece of advice I have is to ‘date’ a contractor before you get ‘married,’” he says. “Sit down and interview them to understand who they are as a person. Ask questions like, ‘Why do you have your business? Where do you see your business in 10 years? What do you value personally and professionally?’ You want to get to know them and have them get to know you because that's how trust is formed.”
Although Sebring has only been in the Franklin/Brentwood area for about five years, he founded Sebring Design Build over 25 years ago when he lived in the suburbs of Chicago. Over the years, he has gained a deep level of trust from clients. “We're doing multiple projects, we're getting referrals, and the company’s really growing here.”
What makes Sebring Design Build really stand out is the craftsmanship and custom work that goes into every design that he and his team create. “Our clients want a bespoke style, so everything is custom-tailored for them.” No project, he says, is exactly the same. “What makes us different is the attention to detail. Our clients are looking for us to think outside the box.”
One of these clients, a well-known musician, hired Sebring Design Build to remodel his entire house, and when it came to the kitchen, he definitely didn’t want any cookie-cutter design. “It was very moody with black doors and green cabinets,” says Sebring. “We were basically trying to capture the essence of his and his family’s personality.”
When working together on projects, he and his team of highly talented craftsmen, tradesmen, and interior designers use their expertise to help clients obtain the results they’re looking to achieve. “Hiring a contractor is a very personal decision,” he says. “This is someone coming into your home and changing it, and you want it to be for the better and have it fit you exactly.”
The fear of hiring the wrong contractor can be overwhelming. “People look at reviews that are written by other people who have ‘dated’ them,” he says. “It's so similar and people don't look at it that way. Mistakes happen when you don't treat it as a relationship.”
Their online reviews are overwhelmingly positive. One states, “We hired Sebring to remodel our master bathroom and hallway bathroom. This is the second project they completed for us, and similar to our first experience, we are extremely pleased with the quality of work and high level of customer service. From design to completion, all of the team members we interacted with were focused on ensuring the work was done right and that it exceeded our expectations.”
Sebring explains that while clients should be interviewing them, he and his team are also interviewing clients. Before any project begins, they have to make sure they’re a good match for the homeowner and the project.
“What makes us different is the attention to detail. Our clients are looking for us to think outside the box.”
“We want to know if a client is going to value what we bring to the table,” he says. “Am I wasting my time or their time? I’ve had to tell people we're not the right fit for what they want. For example, we have a process and maybe it doesn't go well with their process. We’re upfront and honest.”
Once they accept a project, they then want to find out more about the clients’ goals. “We ask questions such as, ‘What is your design aesthetic?’ It’s our job to ask tons of questions, to learn who you are, understand what you want, and then be an advocate for that. It’s never about what we want.”
For example, when doing a kitchen, the homeowners may be asked, “Where do you plan on putting your pots?; Where are you putting your silverware?; Do you need accessories to help organize inside the cabinets?; and “Do you want to do that on your own or do you need help?” Function is as important as aesthetics, and clients want everything to fit exactly where it needs to go.
“They may tell us they want to make their kitchen the center of the home when they have a lot of people over,” says Sebring. “They may say they don't want to be separated from the party while preparing food. But they want this new kitchen to be within the existing structure of the house and our job is to maximize it and make it feel bigger without them having to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on an addition.”
Something clients really appreciate is being able to do what he calls a “test drive” of the room. “Before we start a project, we do 3D renderings, so you'll be able to visually walk through your space and get an idea of what it will look like.”
Once a plan is formulated and approved, Sebring Design Build takes care of everything so the homeowner doesn’t have to worry about having to make any last-minute decisions. Everything is determined beforehand, including the budget and scheduling. “We're schedule-based so that they know who's coming and when they're coming, and if there's
an issue with that, we tell them,” he says. “It’s all about open communication and they like that.”
Something else to keep in mind when hiring a contractor, he explains, is to not talk about money first. He says it’s like going on your first date and asking how much money someone makes. “We’re not a car dealership,” he says. “I'm not selling a product that can be shopped. Instead, I'm selling a service that is different for every client.”
Of course, cost is important, and Sebring and his team will draw up a budget range based on what the client tells them they want. “They may say I'm comfortable within that range or I would like to be in the lower end of the range,” he says. “We'll give them advice that would best serve them to keep them where they want to be. We have a lot of options.”
Sebring Design Build is a luxury build company and takes a lot of pride in the quality and craftsmanship offered. “Think about when you want a hamburger,” he says. “You could get a burger at McDonald's for four bucks or you can go to a high-end restaurant and pay $20 for a burger. Why would you spend $20? Well, because it's higher-quality meat and it tastes better. It’s served on a nice plate by people who are kind, and the whole atmosphere is great.”
So next time you have a project, take the time to get to know the contractor you’re hiring - it can save a lot of grief. “It will be a more successful ‘marriage’ and it won't end in an ugly ‘divorce,’” says Sebring. He also recommends homeowners take things slow if they’re nervous about committing. “Have them do a small bathroom before you do the entire kitchen.”
Make a date with Sebring and find out all about him and his company. Chances are, it will be the start of a beautiful and successful relationship.

HE'S SO Vein

DR. DEREK DE GRIJS OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE
VEIN CLINIC ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT VARICOSE VEINS AND VASCULAR SURGERY

Dr. Derek de Grijs, MD, RPVI, is a Nashville native and a vascular surgeon at Middle Tennessee Vein Clinic in Franklin. After growing up in Nashville, he attended Georgetown University where he studied English and psychology in addition to his pre-med studies and played on the baseball team. “I had so few great moments!” he jokes about his college diamond days. But on a serious note, he adds, “I wanted to study more of the sciences as an undergrad, but it wasn’t feasible because the classes I was interested in conflicted with my baseball commitments.”
However, as an undergraduate he held various volunteer and paid positions at Georgetown University Hospital and,
specifically, its renowned Wound Care Center. There he made connections and gained exposure to vascular and wound care surgery. After graduating, he attended medical school in Memphis, followed by a general surgery residency with much of his time spent on vascular service, “and it became a passion of mine, treating these types of complex and chronic problems.”
Recently we met with him to discuss the services and care he and his colleagues provide at Middle Tennessee Vein Clinic.
LET’S GET RIGHT TO THE POINT: VARICOSE VEINS. WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY SHOULD SOMEONE SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU?
A varicose vein develops when the valves inside a vein fail to do their job effectively, thus impeding the flow of blood back to the heart, a condition often referred to as venous insufficiency. This is what causes large, bulging varicose veins as well as smaller, pesky spider veins. Blood collects in the veins, causing bulging or swelling, with a deep blue or purple color. Usually, the immediate concern is appearance because they typically occur in the lower extremities that are often exposed. This can progress to include swelling, heaviness or pain.
Prior to an initial consultation, you could try to treat varicose veins by wearing compression stockings. But if you arrive at a point where you need to wear them every day to mitigate swelling, fatigue, and/or pain, that’s when you should call for an appointment so that we can assess your condition.
Drs. Derek De Grijs (L) and Sina Iranmanesh
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS IF VARICOSE OR SPIDER VEINS ARE LEFT UNTREATED?
Initially, there are few medical complications. However, by the time you are seeing the outward signs of venous insufficiency, your venous circulation has likely been abnormal for years and will tend to get progressively worse. Severe swelling that’s not addressed for a period of years can lead to a decrease in skin integrity which can result in wounds and ulcers that require immediate evaluation. The primary point to keep in mind is that vein issues in the legs are highly treatable with early intervention. Good outcomes are still possible for those who wait, but the long-term prognosis is better when treated early.
DOES HEALTH INSURANCE COVER THE COST OF VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT?
Yes, most commercial and Medicare based insurance plans cover the cost of treatment of symptomatic varicose veins, with few exceptions. Of course, what everyone wants to know is what their treatment will entail and what a successful outcome looks like.
The treatment of venous disorders of the leg varies greatly from patient-to-patient and involves a thorough evaluation to customize an individual treatment plan tailored to give each patient the best results possible. Procedures to treat varicose veins and spider veins of the legs are quick, office-based procedures with very little recovery and downtime. These procedures include heat-induced closure of malfunctioning veins, injections or sclerotherapy of smaller spider veins, or the use of micro-incisions to individually remove varicose veins. Often a combination of these procedures is used to ensure the best result from both a cosmetic and comfort perspective.
AS A VASCULAR SURGEON, DO YOU TREAT CONDITIONS THAT CAN BE DEEMED MORE SERIOUS AND THAT REQUIRE IMMEDIATE ATTENTION?
First, in the event of an emergency, you should seek treatment at an emergency center. But we do treat conditions such as abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) which occur when weakness in the wall of the aorta causes part of the abdominal aorta to expand or bulge, and potentially burst. The good news is that the treatment has come a long way. Twenty-five years ago, it was a high-risk
surgery with a large abdominal incision, followed by a week of hospital recovery. Now, it’s a 90-minute procedure performed in the state-of-the-art hybrid operating room at Williamson Medical Center. It involves two small incisions in the groin area. The patient is held overnight for observation and typically goes home the next morning. Other conditions we treat include carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease, pulmonary embolism, DVT and other deep venous disorders, pelvic congestion syndrome, and uterine fibroids. While these are serious conditions, I want to stress that in many cases the patient will experience symptoms before an emergency arises.
WHAT PERCENTAGE OF YOUR PATIENTS ARE WOMEN AND WHAT PERCENTAGE ARE MEN?
Probably 70-80 percent of the patients we see for lower extremity vein issues are women. There are physiologic reasons for this such as pregnancy, estrogen exposure and genetics. Men tend to disregard their varicose veins because, frankly, they just pay less attention to the appearance of their legs and put off treatment for many years despite what often ends up being quite advanced symptoms. But whether you’re a woman or a man, it’s important to know that varicose veins and venous insufficiency is a progressive disease. It’s very treatable, but the long-term results and outcomes are better when addressed early.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY
DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA
Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.” Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether it’s the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life.

So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime.
Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estateland, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot River. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed Green O hauses that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trail rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape—and bear witness to Mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.

WHERE TO STAY
Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-squarefeet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fireplaces and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent—ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).
For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.
Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-of-theart accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-emfrom-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.
DRINK & DINE
Montana’s best kept secret? Our hideaway chefs, making waves from the Montana wilderness. Chef Brandon Cunningham, Executive Chef at the Green O, is a James Beard Award finalist whose creations at the Social Haus are highly curated through an 8-course tasting menu. Other highly trained and talented chefs like Chef Brett Edlund, Chef Ben Scott, Executive Pastry Chef Krystle Swenson, and Sunny Jin, the General Manager of Food and Beverage, are part of the intricate patchwork of the culinary experience at Pomp, Trough, Shed, Camp and the notable Chuck Wagon—a summertime treat where guests can ride a hay wagon along the banks of the Blackfoot River for an Old West-inspired chuck wagon dinner. The menu ranges from all-natural chicken and Tomahawk ribeye to fresh vegetables grilled over an open flame campfire.

HOW TO GET HERE
Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.
