Galileo defined speed as the distance covered per unit of time. For all of human history, in one way or another, we have been obsessed with the concept of moving from one place to another as quickly as possible. The pursuit of speed has been a moving target, from Chuck Yeager to Usain Bolt to Apollo 10 (Mach 32 returning from the Moon- the fastest humans have ever traveled). Speed has been a lifelong obsession for one Texan with a name straight out of a spaghetti western- John Hennessey.
Hennessey began his pursuit of speed in 1991 by racing, tuning, and building cars. He even set a record at Bonneville. Eventually, the financial realities of being a racecar driver set in, and he thought, “Maybe someone would pay me to modify their car.” 33 years later, Hennessey Performance has grown into one of Earth's premier aftermarket tuning companies and has modified over 18,000 cars.
Never one to stand still for long, Hennessey began seriously thinking about building a car from scratch.
Anyone who knows a thing or two about the automotive industry knows this is a monumental undertaking. In many cases, automotive giants invest hundreds of millions of dollars in R&D just to get the first handful of prototypes on the road before manufacturing even begins. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Hennessey Special Vehicles launched the Venom
Hypercar- /hīpərkär/ Noun- a vehicle that is in the top 1% of supercars.
F5 in August of 2014, rocketing Hennessey into the hypercar market. Its 6.6L twin turbo V8 produces a mind-boggling 1,817 Horsepower that pushes the car's top speed to a theoretical 300+ MPH (achieving top speed is more difficult than you’d think). To put that power into perspective, a brand new Toyota RAV4 produces 203 HP- the Venom F5 weighs significantly less than the SUV and delivers nearly 9 times the power. The Venom F5 has a power-to-weight ratio of 1,298 horsepower per ton, which is the best of any car currently on sale. Cars that look like the Venom F5 make a sound that is predictable- high-pitched, frantic revs that zing more than a punch. The monster twin turbo V8 produces a fury that sounds more like a dragster than a slick European supercar-and that’s all part of the appeal. Think cowboy boots rather than Oxfords and a dinner jacket. The build quality of the car is exceptional. Once you lift the vertical doors and settle into the car, you notice that it’s tiny, as all these cars tend to feel but also very well put together. The interior reminds me a lot of the latest Ford GT. Carbon Fiber everything, machine milled aluminum control knobs, yolk steering wheel with shift paddles attached that have the most satisfying paddle shift ‘click, click’ I’ve ever come across. To sum it up, the fit and finish of this hypercar is outstanding.

I met John Hennessey just an hour before the opening of the brand's latest store, Hennessey Nashville, co-located with Raging Bull Nashville (Lamborghini). If you didn’t already know who John Hennessey was, you might mistake him for a real estate agent or an architect. He’s calm, affable, and almost soft-spoken—certainly not the speed-obsessed mad scientist one would expect.
I asked John, “Why Nashville?”
“Our son Cole graduated from Belmont, so we’ve spent a lot of time in Nashville and grew to love it,” John explains. “There are a lot of incentives to settle and do business here. I see a lot of people moving from the West Coast and landing in either Texas or Tennessee. We decided it was the place to be.”
Before the reveal of the Venom F5 at the Nashville grand opening, Hennessey spoke about the future of the F5. Other hypercar companies have achieved 300+ mph speed runs, but those were accomplished only in one direction; the goal for the F5 is to push 300 in two opposing directions- back-to-back runs pushing the 300 mph barrier. Hennessey says they hope to be the first to pull this off before the end of the year. In his grand opening speech, he quoted JFK’s famous “We choose to go to the Moon” speech -“We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard”.
That ethos sums up Hennessey Performance quite well. What they do is exceptionally difficult. Building a car you can drive to Cars and Coffee and back, then break track lap records and push beyond 300 mph on road tires is borderline impossible—yet here we are.
Just before the unveiling of the Venom F5, John Hennessey, sporting his iconic cowboy hat, said, “We do these things because they are hard. That helps our team, drivers, and engineers better along the way and helps us deliver a better product to our customers.”

Men and women often have very different ideas when it comes to decorating. He might like heavier furniture and darker colors, while she may want more feminine pieces and lighter colors. So, how can couples find a nice balance and be happy with the end result?
“Compromise is huge, and it doesn't have to be limiting,” says Patricia Robbins, the store manager and lead designer at OP Jenkins Furniture & Design in Franklin. “It’s taking everything step by step, and this is really where designers can help a lot because they can be the middleman.”
Patricia has been with OP in Franklin since it opened in 2016, and before that worked at a high-end design boutique. (The original family-owned-and-operated OP Jenkins store in Knoxville has been in business since 1907.)
“Men typically tend to focus more on the big picture,” she says. “So, if he wants that big comfortable chair, she can then have her beautiful sofa and some of those other little feminine details.”
When Patricia is designing a space that needs to incorporate masculine and feminine tastes, she focuses on textures, wood tones, and metals. “If I'm going to do a feminine fabric on a pillow for the sofa, I then want to make sure that's balanced out with a darker wood tone on a coffee table and maybe some heavy metal on side tables so it's inviting for both the husband and wife.”
She recently helped a previous client who was downsizing from a large home in Franklin to a downtown Nashville condo. For this, Patricia had to blend her client’s traditional preferences with her client’s husband’s need for masculine touches and do it all in a very contemporary space.
The main rooms, which consisted of a living room, lounge, dining room, and kitchen, were all in one big open space, so a nice flow had to be considered.
Instead of jumping right into an extremely contemporary style, Patricia knew she needed to ease her client into it. “In the living room, a modern petrified stone coffee table gives a lot of really nice texture, and it's got creams and golds, which are the tones that my client is drawn to. We've got a little bit of leather in there too and some traditional Schumacher fabric prints that just give that nod back to a traditional style,” she says.
The lounge space was a really cool spot. “We put in a very traditional settee in a modern bright colored velvet, and then we had a traditional Asian toile print lumbar pillow across the front. We also added an abstract piece of art and light fixture.”
For the dining room, the client wanted to keep her rustic yet refined dark wood table, so Patricia paired it with modern dining chairs to fit the condo vibe.
The kitchen was lit with amazing modern pendant lights, and seating included traditional-style counter stools with really sharp black and white fabric. Everything in this space also worked great, with the dining table right behind it.
Fortunately for clients, OP Jenkins Furniture has a vast catalog of manufacturers that carry everything from French antiques to the most modern pieces. “There are no limits to what we can do,” says Patricia. “We have access to very high-end furniture, but we can also work with medium-to-lower-end budgets. Chris Culos’ passion for music is undeniable. Not only is he the founding drummer of the critically acclaimed band O.A.R., but he is also a rockstar husband, father, and owner of The Music City All Stars. Culos was born and raised in Rockville, Maryland, where he and his childhood friends made their band debut at their eighth-grade talent show. A few years later, in high school, they officially became O.A.R. From playing house parties to selling out tours worldwide, Culos has gotten to do what many musicians only dream of doing.

In 2002, Chris met his wife, Katie – whom he credits this new venture to - and the pair moved to her hometown of Chicago. In 2013, Katie accepted a position at Vanderbilt, and they decided to plant roots right here in Brentwood, where they are now raising their two young daughters. Back in Chicago, Chris’ close friend, fellow musician, collaborator, and future business partner, Danny Chaimson, had the idea to create a band that people could hire for weddings – only this band would be made up of the city's best musicians. Since many
musicians have to wait to work until the touring season comes around, he pondered how great it would be to not only give these musicians more opportunities to perform but also to give brides and grooms the chance to give their guests a night they will talk about for years to come! Danny began recruiting band members of acts with household names, and before he knew it, the idea had taken off. He soon had four bands based in Chicago and one on the West Coast - all under the name Gold Coast Events.

There was no question that this concept would thrive in a city known for music. Given that the two friends had bonded through the years over their mutual love of music, Danny enlisted Chris to head up The Music City All Stars crew.
After a decade of residing in Tennessee, The Music City All Stars launched in 2023. While speaking on how he found the musicians to make up the band, Chris shared, “My first calls were to friends I toured with,
then to some other musicians I became close with once I moved here. [I told them] this was going to be a real band made up of some of the best original artists around. I was looking for musicians whose day jobs are playing in front of thousands of people.”
With a variety of professional touring musicians on the roster, including vocalists who were finalists on American Idol and The Voice, The Music City All Stars feature two female vocalists, two male vocalists,
and a rapper. This way, they can authentically hit every different kind of music genre and deliver a truly concert-like experience. To top it off, clients get to choose the songs they want played from the array of tracks included in their song catalog. With the goal of ditching the cliché wedding tracks, this approach has been very successful among clients.
“I truly enjoy being a part of celebrating such a special day for our clients – it’s an honor! I get to learn so many new songs… [revisiting classics I thought I knew] has been one of the best learning experiences of my life,” Chris shares. “[Being the drummer for The Music City All Stars] has helped me evolve as a musician myself.”

The pair – both born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio - first connected over Facebook in 2009, where Colin would share videos of his original music. Austin came across his account and sent him a message saying the two should collaborate - and the rest is history! After posting their first track online, titled “Minivan Jam,” the duo decided to form a band that ultimately led them to Music City.
Colin attended Belmont University and Austin Lipscomb University. Upon graduation, they decided to form a media company called Mac n’ Cheese Media, where they filmed music videos, corporate events, and weddings. Eventually, they began a “Welcome to Nashville” series in 2016. In this video, Austin and Colin visited nearly seventy of Nashville’s famed spots – which took four days alone just to film – and created relatable content on every corner. From poking fun at the pedal taverns on Broadway to the long line for the butterfly mural in The Gulch, Nashville residents deeply resonated with their content, resulting in more views and more laughter. What began as an attempt to promote their video production company became a viral internet sensation, quickly garnering millions of views.
With their phones blowing up from media outlets and morning news channels, the pair were motivated to create their own brand as content creators. Due to their success, Austin and Colin decided to make their viral video “Welcome to Nashville” a series. Their third video caught the attention of a music industry professional, which led to several meetings, pitches, and, eventually, a record deal.
“We are now in the process of gearing up to release our first album - with a label - that isn’t just Nashville-specific content,” Austin shares. “[It will be] relatable nationwide… for those who don’t like to take life too seriously. [We want to make people] smile… we’re trying to create joy in a world that’s a little too dark right now.”
With Austin’s knack for songwriting and Colin’s extensive knowledge of production, the audience immediately grew fond of the duo’s content. Tying together relatability, comedy, and their mutual love for music is “extremely meaningful” to them. Touching on the immense thought and effort that goes into each clip, they share their gratitude to those who made it possible –giving their appreciation to the people of Nashville who have and continue to support them on their journey.
Austin shares, “to be recognized for that means the world to us.” Colin adds, “Nashville is filled with thousands of insanely talented musicians… we feel so blessed and fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue this full time. It’s a dream. This community has done so much for our careers… we are super thankful for that.”
While speaking on the growth of Nashville, the pair share that Nashville’s everchanging landscape allows for them to have more fresh content. Aside from some of their favorite urban outings – including catching shows at Eastside Bowl and dining at Red Headed Stranger - they enjoy taking in the beautiful Tennessee scenery while hiking at Percy Warner Park and visiting the Assembly Food Hall downtown - because “it gives you a taste of Broadway… you can see it and smell it, but you don’t have to touch it if you don’t want to,” Austin states.
Colin, who has been making music since he was ten years old, has a message for all the readers: “If you’re trying to pursue your dreams, whatever it is, you’ve just got to stay in it as long as you can because it takes a lot of time. If you feel discouraged after a little while, remember it takes time and not to give up.” “You’ve got to stay in the game long enough for your hard work and opportunity to collide,” Austin adds. “If you stay around long enough and keep being true to who you are, good things are going to happen.”

From Elite Martial Arts To Writing, The Klaphekes Can Do It All

The sixth and final season of Netflix hit Cobra Kai will be released in July, and Alisha and Daniel Klapheke, local owners of Elite Martial Arts of Brentwood, count themselves lucky to be involved. Daniel trained William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) and Martin Kove (Sensei Kreese) for season 6. In addition to their careers in the martial arts, both are writers. Alisha is a USA Today Bestselling author of books featuring unique magic, far-flung fantasy settings, and romance, while Daniel writes historical fiction.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELVES AND HOW YOU CAME TO OPEN ELITE MARTIAL ARTS IN BRENTWOOD
AK: We met in Knoxville through mutual friends and got to know one another when I began taking his Krav Maga classes. I fell in love with martial arts and with Daniel. He was encouraging, kind, and inspiring with the children and adults he taught.
DK: The relationship with my business partner in Knoxville had deteriorated and I wanted to continue teaching martial arts. Alisha didn't hesitate when I asked her if she'd move to Nashville with me. She worked as an elementary school teacher and I worked at a veterinary clinic while we grew the new martial arts school in Brentwood. We lived pretty humbly for a while but we kept grinding until Elite Martial Arts grew into a thriving dojo.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE DAY-TO-DAY OF THE DOJO?
AK: Daniel teaches the majority of the classes, which is exceptional. In most dojos, the head instructor/sensei/teacher normally only teaches a few classes now and then. I teach a class twice a week, assist new students, and help out during the teen and adult classes.
DK: As the business grew, I needed more help, and Alisha felt it was time to switch from teaching in school to teaching on the dojo mats. The business
has had its ups and downs over the last 21 years, but it has provided our family with a great life. We have promoted more than 250 people to black belt. The success of Elite Martial Arts now affords Alisha free time to write dozens of books and for me to write several historical fiction novels, do DIY projects at home, hike in the park, and skateboard with my friends.
TELL OUR READERS ABOUT YOUR WRITING CAREER, ALISHA.
AK: Since childhood, I've been jotting down stories and sharing them with friends and family. I won writing contests as a kid, but then I gave it up, earned my Master's degree in Education, and taught elementary school. Teaching was amazing, but my creative side hated the limitations on how I was permitted to teach. In addition to that, I began writing when our first child was an infant because my brain needed a challenge beyond teaching martial arts—that was truly Daniel's passion. I wanted my own thing. My stories wanted to live. I snagged a lovely agent, but traditional publishing limited me. The schedule is so slow. I couldn't always write the stories that inspired me. And so, I dove into self-publishing and have adored it ever since. The freedom is intoxicating. DK: William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) from the 1984 The Karate Kid movie and Netflix's Cobra Kai series came to me for training. His goal was to prepare himself for the final season of the series. We did several hours of private training a week together. As our friendship grew, he'd hint that I should be CONTINUED >
on Cobra Kai with him. Eventually, the hints became invitations. On the set in Atlanta, I was "Sensei Daniel” and was treated like one of the stars. I was considered a heavily featured extra. My part in the show is mostly standing next to the actors and occasionally performing simple fight scenes in the background. My favorite part was consulting with my friend during his fight scenes. Alisha and our kids got to experience a day on the set. They will be in the background of the final episode!
DK: My time on the Cobra Kai set was an amazing and surreal privilege, but my true purpose in life is to empower people through martial arts. My focus is to continue teaching my craft while constantly improving myself. Alisha and I will indulge our love of traveling the world by heading to Spain this fall.
AK: I can't wait! Hopefully, we can keep on inspiring people through martial arts and through fiction. With our amazing teens at our side, as well as our extended family and our friends, we have an amazing support system to fulfill our dreams and aspirations.

CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH THE TYPICAL PROCESS OF STARTING WITH A NEW STYLING CLIENT? HOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND THEIR STYLE PREFERENCES AND WARDROBE NEEDS?
My process always starts with a phone call. I really like to get to know my clients. I'm not putting them in a costume, so I like to know their likes and dislikes—their wants and needs.
Once we've agreed to work together, the first step in the styling process is the Closet Detox. I go to the client's house, and we sort through their closet and get rid of old clothes. I like to start with the client's closet because it gives me a better understanding of who they are, what they like, how their clothes fit and what they need for their wardrobe.
From there, we enjoy an entirely preplanned and customized personal shopping day at various stores in Nashville and Franklin. I'm all about efficiency, so I don't want a client to hire me, and then we wander aimlessly around the mall!
Once we finish with the Closet Detox and Shopping Day, I put everything in a Digital Style Book as their fashion reference guide! Like your own personal style handbook!

HOW DO YOU STAY UPDATED WITH THE LATEST TRENDS AND FASHION INFLUENCES? HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE THESE INTO YOUR STYLING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CLIENTS?
I read a lot of fashion magazines and blogs, and I follow a lot of really stylish guys on Instagram. To be honest, I try not to follow too many fashion trends. What's in one season will be completely out next season. If you try to follow trends, you'll end up with a closet full of mess that you'll never wear again.
I like to adhere to classic American fashion with European sensibilities. It's timeless.
WHEN CREATING A NEW LOOK FOR A CLIENT, HOW DO YOU BALANCE THEIR PERSONAL STYLE WITH CURRENT TRENDS AND YOUR CREATIVE VISION?
My goal is to make my clients look and feel their best. Men often come to me because they're in a fashion rut, and my older clients have been wearing the same things for years and have no idea what to do or change. In both cases, I take their current style and update it with some current pieces without losing their sense of self in the process. The whole point is for them to look and feel like the best versions of themselves!
WHAT IS A COMMON CHALLENGE YOU ENCOUNTER WHEN STYLING MEN?
The two most common challenges that men face when being styled are body image issues and imposter syndrome. Like women, men also suffer from body image concerns. Either they're too short or too tall. Their arms are too long or short, shoulders too broad, torsos too long, etc. I've heard it all!
The most common concern is that they think they have a "Dad Bod." Listen, as you get older, your weight shifts - it happens! I always tell my clients, "No one is paying attention to it more than you are." The imposter syndrome comes into play with the elevated wardrobe. Most guys go from being completely unnoticed to being the best-dressed guy in any room they walk into. I always tell my clients, "You'll grow into it."
1. Always have an anchor for your outfit: light with dark, dark with light, patterns with solids. It's more settling on the eyes.
2. Shoes complete the outfit.
3. Consider adding a third piece to every outfit, such as a bandana/pocket square, watch or hat. This takes an outfit from "decent" to "great." But don't overdo it! Keep it simple.
4. Remember to cuff your short-sleeved button-down shirts and your chinos and jeans.
5. Condition your leather shoes at least once a month. Take care of your leather, and it will take care of you. Leather is a skin, treat it as such.

From tasty shrimp to sultry salmon and succulent lobster, this year’s grilling is all about seafood. These juicy lobster tails are a grilling recipe that will leave you feeling like you are chilling at the beach. Warning! Your mouth will water.
Men have been grilling since the beginning of time. From fire pits to modern grills, they are the kings of fire. Although some still crave cooking over the open flame, there are many different styles of grilling. Today, we have the green egg, hibachi, flattop, gas, electric, and charcoal-burning grills.
• Olive oil for brushing
• 1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter
• 2 cloves garlic, very finely chopped or grated
• 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest plus 2 tablespoons juice
• 1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives
• Pinch of cayenne pepper
• Four 8-ounce frozen lobster tails, thawed (These are the most ready available option)
• Kosher salt
• Wooden or metal 12” skewers
1. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes before grilling.
2. To start the grill, brush the grill grates with oil and prepare the grill for medium-high heat.
3. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook until sizzling for about 30 seconds. Remove and stir in the lemon zest and juice. Let cool slightly for about 5 minutes, then stir in the parsley, chives, and cayenne. Keep warm.
With so many options, there’s no excuse not to try this tasty recipe that everyone will enjoy.
The modern grill we use today was invented by George Stephen in 1952. He was a welder at Weber Brothers Metal Works in Illinois. He cut a metal buoy in half, welded three steel legs onto the dome, and then used the top half as a lid to the grill, creating a domeshaped grill. Today, the Weber grill is still one we have.
So, while the weather is sunny and the grill is burning hot, sink your teeth into a juicy lobster tail with friends and family.
4. Using a pair of kitchen shears, cut lengthwise through the top of the lobster shells, then pull the shells apart slightly to expose the lobster meat. Use a knife to cut almost but not entirely through the tails and push the cut sides open slightly. Insert a skewer lengthwise through each side of the tails to keep them from curling during grilling. Brush all over with olive oil and sprinkle lightly with salt.
5. Grill the tails meat-side down until the shells begin to turn red all over, 4 to 5 minutes. Flip, then brush the meat generously with the butter. Cover with the lid and grill until the meat has just turned white, about 3 minutes. Flip again, brush again with the butter, and grill until the shells are bright red and the meat has just been cooked for about 1 minute more.
6. Remove the skewers and serve with any extra warm butter on the side.
The total time to cook is about 25 minutes, yielding a serving of 4.
For something sweet and tangy to pair with the tails, try grilled peaches al a mode or with homemade whipped cream and honey. Surfs up, dudes!

Lenny Magill of Brentwood, an internationally recognized firearms authority with expertise in Glock® handguns and the founder of the GlockStore in Nashville, was never comfortable honing his shooting skills in a lane range. “You have people shooting next to you who you don’t know, and it’s noisy,” he says.
People trying to learn how to shoot are at a bigger disadvantage at these types of ranges. “When someone is shooting next to you, that's a big distraction, especially when you can't even hear the instructor or really concentrate on what you’re doing.”
Shooting at one target down a lane can also get boring after a while, and there are many restrictions on what people can and can’t do. Lenny knew there had to be a better way, so he put his experience and creativity into action to develop a revolutionary concept called Shoot270°.
“We found that the private one-on-one experience with an instructor is what drives this thing.”
Shooting, he says, is a perishable skill, to stay proficient, practice is key, especially when it comes to defending oneself. Doing it in a more real-life setting allows for the best training.
“We can turn the lights down and make it look like a true nighttime situation in your house. If you have a laser or light on your gun, you’re able to practice with that too. You can walk down a hallway, shoot targets, and do things that you would do in a home environment in a self-defense situation.”
Clients can also draw from a holster and shoot at multiple targets in multiple directions as fast as possible, which is not possible in lane ranges.
Men and women come from all over to train with Shoot270°. “We've taken ladies who are absolutely terrified of guns, but maybe they’re home alone and afraid, so they want to learn how to properly use one.”
Lenny says once you understand the concept, shooting is easier than golf or tennis. “Even after just two sessions, these women are doing great, and that’s fun to see.”
Since it’s private, newcomers feel much more comfortable because there's no pressure or expectations. “It's a lot more relaxed because it's really about you. We have couples and families come in, and everybody has a great experience.”

“We have basically every Glock model, and everything is manufactured right here in Nashville,” says Lenny.
“Most people have this tool and want to learn how to use it and how to be proficient with it, even though they never want to have to use it. So if you train with it in the proper way, and something does happen, you're going to know what to do. That's why consistent training is very important.”
