GUIDING YOU HOME

Kids & Pets Issue

This issue is here to remind you of all things good and joyous in the world: kids and pets.

There’s nothing more pure than the innocence of childhood and the unconditional love that pets provide both our families and the community; they deserve to be spotlighted.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for Brentwood’s kids in this issue.

Secondarily, who could forget pets? Their special companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide unconditional love and the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

This issue highlights the children in this community, such as Troop 1255 raising money to put in microchip scanners for lost pets, as well as how to teach your children about financial literacy with the help of Mountain Commerce Bank. As for pets, Beauchamp Animal Hospital discusses new and innovative treatments for your beloved fur babies as well as we highlight some of the many incredible pet-friendly patios around town.

Cheers!

SUCCESS for SHOES

OPENING UP OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN

Since 2006, Soles4Souls, one of the top-rated nonprofits in the country, has been collecting new and used shoes to help fight poverty all around the world. In 2020, another program, 4EveryKid, was added to the organization to provide children experiencing homelessness throughout the United States with new, branded athletic shoes.

"That year, we served about 20,000 kids," shares the organization's CEO and president, Buddy Teaster. "In this fiscal year, we served 150,000 kids; next year, there'll be 250,000 kids. That growth and reach sounds great until you know that the number of kids experiencing homelessness in our public schools is more than one million."

In Metro Nashville Public Schools alone, he says there are between 4,000 and 5,000 kids classified as homeless. Unfortunately, children who don't have a quality pair of well-fitted athletic shoes may have physical discomfort, feel like they don't belong or get bullied by classmates. This response can lead to poor attendance and lower grades. They may also be unable to take part in physical education or sports.

"We've been working in this community in Wisconsin for a long time, and we were there last year," says Buddy. "This big kid comes up and says, 'I'm sure you don't have any size 15.' We not only had one pair in his size but two, and we gave him both. The first thing he said to his mother is, 'Now I can go out for the basketball team.'"

To make other kids' dreams come true, 4EveryKid needs support. "As hard as everybody's working, there's still a long way to go," he says. "These kids, through no fault of their own, don't deserve to be shut out of a normal, happy childhood. And without these opportunities, there's a bunch of talent that will be lost."

People can donate (as little as $20.00 can provide a child with high-quality athletic shoes) and volunteer. It's as easy as hitting a button on the website.

BOUNCE ON OVER TO NASHVILLE BUNNY RESCUE AND ADOPT AN ADORABLE RABBIT TODAY!

BY MARY COMPTON

It’s just a hop, skip, and jump to Nashville Bunny Rescue to find a furry friend to adopt for you or your family. These cute creatures make terrific pets for families, including those with other animals. Sadly, many of them will never find a home. They are dumped at a rescue or even worse.

Laurie Montgomery founded Nashville Bunny Rescue in July of 2001. She was volunteering at a local cat and dog rescue called Freedom Farm in Tennessee when a bunny was dropped off and needed adoption. The bunny won her heart, and Montgomery gave it a home. Since then, she has been caring for and helping bunnies. Since her commission started, Nashville Bunny

Rescue has found homes for over 3,000 bunnies. They are a certified 501 (c) nonprofit that allows for adoption or fostering with fosters across Middle Tennessee.

The highest rates of dumped bunnies fall right after Easter, Memorial Day weekend, and the week following July 4th. These rabbits need caring homes. The philosophy among animal shelters and rescues is “Adopt, Don’t Shop.” By adopting, you are ensuring a precious animal finds a loving home without going unnoticed and overlooked.

Rabbits make the greatest pets because they are easy to love and care for. All you need is a comfortable rug 5 by 7 feet and a 24-inch high circle pen. They are happy inside, not outside, and in a pen. They love to eat grass-hay and wet leafy greens, like

spring greens and kale, or even fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, and mint.

Laurie has been busy fighting for animal rights every step of the way. Every year she and her team of animal rescuers travel to the capital on Humane Lobby Day to propose bills that help expand and endorse animal rights. They are “trying to change the laws and make things better for animals,” says Laurie. For example, they fight against cock fighting, dog fighting, animal hoarding, puppy mills, and protecting horses from misuse. One such bill passed is called the PAST Bill. This stands for “Prevent All Soring Tactics,” aimed to fight the cruelty of horses. With awareness, change can happen. Nashville Bunny Rescue has been going every year for 24 years.

Rescue doesn’t have to be a somber subject; it can also be fun. Nashville Bunny Rescue hosts Bunny Yoga classes! Be on the lookout for details via their Instagram page. Bunny Rescue can be the life of the party for birthdays, school, and church events, all the while creating awareness of adoption. The proceeds go to the spaying of bunnies. Spaying animals is a great way to ensure that the population does not become overpopulated. This non-profit provides bunny sitters for those who are going on vacation and can’t take their pet rabbit with them, although pet rabbits are wonderful traveling buddies. You can also schedule an appointment for grooming. To find out how to volunteer, adopt, or foster, check out the rescue’s Instagram page. You can also call or text Laurie directly.

Custom, Luxury Forts

SKILLED CARPENTERS AT FIREFLY FORTS MAKE PERSONALIZED, OUTDOOR DREAMS COME TRUE FOR FAMILIES

““We believe there's something magical about our forts, and are super excited to share that magic with children and adults alike.”

Whimsical, charming forts and treeforts are where some of life's best memories can be made, especially when these structures mirror imaginations. As such, Firefly Forts was a business born from a father’s desire to build something magical for his children. Now the magic lives on in Music City through  Firefly Forts Nashville franchise owner Keith Maddin.

"When I discovered a new business starting these forts, I thought: 'This is exactly what I want to be doing next,'" says Keith.

As a mother of three and grandmother of four, Keith says she understands how families' needs and preferences change over time. While renovating her own house, she developed friendships with construction-related subcontractors, including plumbers, electricians, brickwork and painters. She states that a network of professionals then organically became her official working business called BK Management (standing for 'Big Keith' due to 'Little Keith' being her niece).

Leila Grossman of Grannis Photography.

Firefly Forts Nashville

Firefly Forts Nashville crews specialize in building luxury treeforts entire families can enjoy. They create “beautiful spaces children can call their own and that will grow with them into their teenage years.” It all began during the summer of 2020 when Atlanta residents Michael and Kristin Scaglione made Mike’s childhood dream a reality for their children by building an innovative treefort in their backyard.

During 2023, Keith says a local client asked her if the BK Management crew could build a fort like one featured in a  Southern Living article, done by a family in Atlanta who started a treefort operation.

Keith recalls the fort concept immediately resonated with her, so she called the business owners, Mike and Kristin Scaglione, to inquire if they'd considered expanding Firefly Forts to Nashville. Keith shares, "They'd already built some forts here but found building that far from Georgia was hard on their family. I told them, 'You need me! I’m already plugged into this world; I’m a native Nashvillian, and I know lots of people!'"

It seemed like a natural fit.

"People stick with about 80% of the fort plan they choose. The other 20% is where creativity comes in. They decide if they want a side deck where they can put a dining room table, swing arm, rope swing, a zipline, climbing wall, a deck all the way around the fort or a hammock underneath. The sky’s the limit!" asserts Keith.

Treeforts are great for every age, she reminds. "If you build one big enough, and your kids are going crazy inside, send them outside to the treefort. Or, take your girlfriends outside to hang out in the treefort for happy hour or to play Mahjongg."

THAT SMOOTHIE BOWL GIRL

THE WORLD

Nicole Renard, known to many as Nicole the Nomad, has made a home in Nashville, where she can continue to pursue one of her greatest passions: feeding people around the world.

“I felt like a big part of my purpose was to feed people around the world,” Nicole explains.

Nicole the Nomad was born while she was living abroad. It initially started out as a travel blog that showcased her travels and the delicious food she ate. Upon returning home, she became a pastry chef at her university, where several students asked for her recipes. After utilizing Nicole the Nomad to share her recipes, her blog quickly blew up.

“I had a whole section for recipes, a whole section for travel, and it went hand and hand because one of the things I love most about traveling is food and experiencing different cultures through foods,” she says. “I loved trying new restaurants and immersing myself in wherever I am at through the local cuisine.”

People worldwide quickly fell in love with Nicole and her content. Her website, Instagram, and TikTok quickly grew as she continued to share recipes. Her smoothie bowl recipes especially became popular, earning her the nickname of “that smoothie bowl girl.” As her platform grew, she found herself calling Nashville home.

A year into being a Nashville local, E+ROSE reached out to Nicole about creating a collaboration smoothie bowl, resulting in the Nomad Bowl. A chocolate peanut butter-inspired smoothie bowl of strawberries, granola, and puffed rice cacao nibs. Some proceeds from the bowl would go towards Compassion International, a nonprofit close to Nicole’s heart. She currently sponsors two kids through the program: one in Peru and one in Kenya. Through the sales of the Nomad Bowl, E+Rose and her raised over $5,000 dollars for Compassion International. Originally a seasonal item, the Nomad Bowl has since stayed on the menu, and they also now sell Nicole’s coconut smoothie bowls and palm tree spoons in stores.

NICOLE RENARD SETS OUT TO HELP FEED PEOPLE AROUND
Nicole Renard

“That just made my heart so happy,” Nicole gushes. “It goes back to that purpose of feeding people around the world, and I never knew something as random and simple as a smoothie bowl could do that.”

Compassion International is a nonprofit organization that works in over 27 countries. It aids in ending childhood poverty through a church-based program. Nicole and her family have always loved working alongside Compassion International.

“They work with people who live in the community to equip them with the skills, resources, and tools they need to get these families and kids back on their feet, and so they do that through child sponsorship,” Nicole explains. “When someone sponsors a child, that ensures that this child is going to get the medical attention they need, dental, education and food, most importantly.”

Last March, Nicole visited Kenya to witness their work firsthand as well as meet one of her sponsored children.

“We write letters back and forth, and I think that's truly the thing that sets Compassion apart,” she explains. “For some people and some children, you might be the only person in their life who is speaking hope, who is speaking encouragement and telling them God loves you because sometimes they don’t hear that. To know that there is somebody somewhere in the world who is caring for you, and praying for you, and is supporting you, that alone gives them the hope to keep going.”

Following that trip, Nicole competed in season 3 of Gordon Ramsay’s Next Level Chef, finishing seventh place. “Never in a million years did I think that I would end up on something like that, and He (God) keeps putting things into my lap with food and feeding people around the world,” she says.

“(Gordon Ramsay) is so kind and encouraging and is such a good teacher,” she says. “I did get to cook with him for several of the challenges, and he taught me so much in the few cooks I did get from him. He’s a dad, he has six kids and has a soft spot in his heart for mentorship and for helping other chefs grow and learn, and I am just so grateful for that opportunity because it's once in a lifetime.”

Besides sharing her culinary creations, Nicole has been candid about her pregnancy journey. She’s expecting her first child in October and has been emphasizing the importance of self-care and listening to her body since announcing her pregnancy in June.

“I’m definitely more aware of what I’m putting in my body,” she says. “It’s going straight to the baby, so trying to be really conscious about how many nutrients I’m getting and making sure I’m getting enough protein and getting things that are going to make me feel good but also make the baby grow.”

Nicole continues to inspire and connect with her audience through her love for food, travel, and now, her journey into motherhood. She remains committed to her mission of feeding people around the world, one recipe at a time. Whether you’re out and about or staying inside to beat the heat, consider heading to E+ROSE or Nicole’s website to enjoy a delicious smoothie bowl.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT TROOP BRINGS IT HOME BY INSTALLING PET SCANNERS FOR LOST ANIMALS

Troop

Cleverly Thrills

From caramel chocolate chip cookies to pet microchips, Brentwood Girl Scout Troop 1255 has donated the money from cookie sales to help their community. The girls won the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve, by donating the proceeds to install two new pet microchip scanners. The scanners are located at the Brentwood Library off Concord Road and the Williamson County Animal Shelter in Franklin.

Many of the scouts are pet owners themselves and realize the importance of bringing home a lost pet. Lexie has a pug named Pugsley, Sophia has two dogs, Morgan and Cash, and Roxanne has a Yorkshire Terrier named Pigeon. They all agree on the importance of helping those who have lost their pets. They want to help pet owners reunite with their furry family members.

When brainstorming for the project, the girls began thinking about how they could help their community. The goal for the silver award is to create a project that helps the community in a sustainable way. They wanted to do something with pets and animals. Maybe help the homeless with caring for their pets? That was one preliminary idea. They thought and thought and continued to brainstorm. After seeing local missing pet posters, they decided to help pets find their way home again.

The determined group of girls set out to make it happen. They tapped into their sales skills, and with hard work and dedication, they sold as many cookies as needed. The scanners were purchased and installed. For both scanners, the troop sold about 1,800 boxes of cookies. That’s a lot of cookies!

“Cookies are delicious. Especially Girl Scout Cookies,” said Scout Lexie.

The scanners were installed in March.

To use the scanner and reunite beloved pets, take the lost animal to the Brentwood Library or the Williamson County Animal Shelter. There, you will find a scanner box with the logo “Whose Paws?”

Renaissance High School held a competition to create the logo for the scanner. One of Scout Roxanne’s classmates won, and the logo was placed on each box. There is a black paw print and question mark on the front of the scanner to help locate it. Super cute, easy to find, and very helpful.

Inside the scanner box, you will find the pet scanner. Use the scanner and wave it over the animal’s shoulder blades in an S-shaped pattern. If the microchip is undetected, rotate the scanner 90 degrees and scan between the shoulder blades again. Starting at the pet’s head, scan side to side down towards the tail. The microchip can move to different spots sometimes. Make several passes over each area.

When you find the microchip, remember to check where it is enrolled on petmicrochiplookup.com. If the pet microchip is undetected, check the scanner’s battery and slowly scan down the sides of the pet’s legs, across its neck, under its chest, and behind the front legs. As a reminder, make sure to take your time.

After you have the chip number, call the vets or animal shelters from within the area that assist with these scanners and have the contact information to return the pet. Although, not just those on the list will help. It is noted that most shelters and vets will be happy to help even if not on the recommended list of places.

These girls are truly inspiring because of their dedication and hard work towards achieving their goals. They have learned responsibility and made friends and memories along the way. When asked what was next for the troop, they all eagerly replied that they wanted to strive for the gold award next. There’s no stopping these troops as they create a better place for us all through their generosity and care for their community.

Congratulations, Troop 1255, on your wellearned achievement!

Girl Scout Cookie season is right after Christmas running until the beginning of March. The girl’s favorite cookies? A tie between Tagalongs and Samoa.

New Construction Opportunities

“We had an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact in our community and empower young minds.”

Kids and Commerce

Teaching Children The Concepts Of Financial Literacy

It’s never too early to learn financial literacy. Even young children can understand the basic components of handling money. “We have this concept of three buckets, which are give, save, and spend,” says Josh Marsh, SVP/senior relationship manager and market president with Mountain Commerce Bank (MCB) in Brentwood. “When you get money, the first thing you do is put it into one of these three categories.”

He explains that the first part is to figure out how much you want to give, whether that's to a charity or maybe even a church. The second part is determining how much you are going to save, and the third is how much you’re going to spend.

“We like to use this model when talking through the importance of saving and setting a financial goal, making wise decisions, and distinguishing between wants and needs,” Marsh says. “That's a big one.”

With 11-year-old twins and a 14-yearold, he understands this well. “With our twins, one of them would just save everything while the other would want to spend most of it. So, to instill a sense of financial responsibility, when our kids decide they want to buy that new shiny object, we discuss saving to buy it. What usually happens is they will save but don't end up buying it.”

To teach other children the concepts of being financially responsible, Mountain

Commerce Bank held a presentation in April at Haven Academy during the state of Tennessee’s Financial Literacy Month. “We had an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact in our community and empower young minds.”

MCB employees Samuel Stevenson, Hunter Reed, and Andrew Barrett shared their knowledge and expertise in personal finance using fun and interesting presentations. “They covered a wide range of important financial literacy skills,” says Josh, “including the importance of saving money and setting financial goals; making wise spending decisions and distinguishing between needs and wants; introducing the concept of budgeting to manage money effectively; and sharing real-life examples to illustrate financial concepts.” It was such a hit with the kids that they plan to conduct more of these presentations in the future.

Parents can also help inspire a love of saving by opening custodial savings accounts. “MCB has a lot of those,” he says. “It’s in a parent's name, but they can nickname it for their child, and they can then show them the monthly statements. That’s powerful right now since rates on some savings and money market accounts are currently over 4%. Kids can see that their money's working for them, and this is why they should leave it in the account.”

“We like to use this model when talking through the importance of saving and setting a financial goal, making wise decisions, and distinguishing between wants and needs.”

It’s also smart for parents to take advantage of college savings programs. “The state of Tennessee has a 529 Program called TNStars,” says Josh. “It's a program of the Tennessee Department of Treasury, behaves like an investment account, and funds can be withdrawn tax-free to cover qualified higher education expenses.”

Josh, who once worked for a larger bank, enjoys the personal relationships he’s able to foster with clients at MCB. “We pride ourselves in our response times, and the driving force behind that is how all of our clients have a personal contact at MCB,” he says. “We have similar systems and products as larger banks, but, due to size, we can typically deliver a tailored solution to our clients in a fraction of the time.”

To get your children started on the path to financial success, reach out to Josh.

The team at LTPR covers their client needs through press outreach, celebrity and editorial placements, influencer marketing, social media management, event production, branding, brand strategy, design, sales growth counseling, new product launches, and community integration.

From her time at Scales Elementary to Brentwood High, Taylor has had a front-row seat to watching Nashville blossom into the city it is today. She was thrilled to have gotten the opportunity to collaborate with legendary NFL Tight Ends George Kittle, Travis Kelce, and Greg Olsen for this year’s Tight End University summit here in Nashville. She was first introduced to TEU while styling five-time Pro Bowler and San Francisco 49ers star George Kittle, and his wife, Claire. In addition to the Kittles, Taylor shares gratitude to Amanda Matos and Peter Raskin of Rubicon Talent Agency for trusting LTPR to help run this year’s events.

“Being trusted to execute such an insane event and watching everyone have such a great time made [all the hard work] worth it. Seeing people really enjoy themselves with what we created is a highlight I will always remember,” Taylor shares, speaking on what it meant to her to watch LTPR play such a massive role in this year’s TEU.

LTPR worked day in and day out to create a memorable experience for all who took part in this year’s Tight End University. In addition to all their hands-on hard work and planning, they were also able to provide the majority of the gifts due to the generosity of their clients and local vendors.

The hospitality center at The Thompson Hotel was designed to perfection thanks to The Studio Alisa x Kailey, a Canadian and Nashville Interior Design Firm and clients of LTPR. Here, the men and women of TEU were greeted with BÉIS luggage filled with gifts secured by the LTPR team. Guests were welcomed with Turtle Box speakers and a custom fitting for their own pair of Justin cowboy boots CONTINUED >

to wear during their Nashville stay. The wellness centers were also projects of LTPR and featured HD Golf Simulators - flown in all the way from Canada - in addition to services from local businesses, such as facials from CHLOÉ Aesthetics, injections from Elisabeth Smith at Indie RX, IVs from Get Well Health and balloons to complete every space from Party Up Balloon Co. LTPR also hosted Claire Kittle’s

ladies’ luncheon at Hampton Social complete with a charm bar from Wood + Wolfe. In true Nashville fashion, guests were also able to create custom cowboy hats from Flea Style at the Tight Ends and Friends concert. Ending the summit with an extravagant pool party at a private residence, Taylor and her team perfectly showcased Nashville and all the city has to offer.

Tight End University was founded and created by George Kittle in 2021 to bring the Tight End community together for an immersive three-day program. Over the course of the week, attendees are able to bond, collaborate with, and learn amongst their peers - including several retired legends - while participating in a variety of activities,

including film study, on-field drills, recovery, and rehabilitation. TEU is also passionate about giving back to the community through a variety of charitable initiatives.

“When I moved to the position of Tight End back in college, I was just so fortunate that I really found a love for the game. I love to pass that along to everybody. Then, you get a bunch of good people under one building [and it’s just] really cool that we get to do this every year,” Travis Kelce, reigning Super Bowl champion and all-star Tight End for the Kansas City Chiefs, shares with City Lifestyle.

A Lice-Free FUTURE

As the back-to-school season arrives, so does the unwelcome return of head lice. The mingling of children, teachers, and caregivers after a summer apart often leads to a surge in lice cases. But families in Middle Tennessee, now have a new ally in the fight against lice: Lice Clinics of America - Williamson County. This clinic, part of the Lice Clinics of America (LCA) franchise, offers a groundbreaking dehydration technique to eliminate head lice and their eggs.

The motivation behind this new clinic is both personal and compelling. Owner Joe West was inspired to start the business after his daughter, who was away at college, called him worried about an itchy scalp. Fearing it might be lice, Joe contacted a clinic that offered the AirAllé™ treatment for

a head check. Fortunately, his daughter was lice-free but this experience got Joe thinking, 'What if someone needed help here?' After researching local options, he discovered the non-pesticide AirAllé™ dehydration treatment wasn't offered in Tennessee at all. "I saw this as a huge opportunity to launch a successful business based on helping others in a time of crisis. It's a very rewarding business model," says Joe. The clinic offers relief to families with its innovative approach. The FDA cleared AirAllé™ device provides a 30-minute session that dries out lice and nits. Once that is complete, the technician will comb out the nits from the hair and finish with a topical rinse. This efficient process eliminates lice and their eggs in about one hour without the mess of water or shampoos.

New Clinic Brings Innovative Treatment to Tennessee

“The clinic offers relief to families with its innovative approach. The FDA cleared AirAllé™ device provides a 30-minute session that dries out lice and nits.”

Benefits of the AirAllé™ treatment include:

• Minimizing school and work absenteeism due to lice.

• Providing a safe alternative for those with asthma, allergies, or sensitivities to chemicals.

• Avoiding the risk of lice developing resistance, as they cannot adapt to dehydration. Chemical treatments pose risks, especially to children and individuals with health concerns.

MYTHS VS. FACTS: UNDERSTANDING HEAD LICE

Misconceptions about head lice are common. Here are some myths debunked:

Myth: Topical anti-lice shampoos effectively kill lice eggs.

Fact: Lice have developed resistance to the pesticides in many traditional treatments.

Myth: Having lice is a sign of poor hygiene.

Fact: Lice actually prefer clean hair.

Myth: Lice can spread diseases.

Fact: Head lice do not carry or transmit diseases.

Myth: Pets can spread head lice.

Fact: Lice can only survive on human heads.

Myth: Lice can fly, jump, and hop.

Fact: Lice can only crawl. They depend on consuming blood every few hours so they would never choose to leave their host. They are highly adapted to living in human hair and are reluctant to leave it.

Myth: Lice can live on pillows, hairbrushes, and hats for a long time.

Fact: Lice rely on feeding off its human host every three hours. If they don’t have a host to feed from every few hours, they become weak and die quickly.

Overuse of pesticides can be harmful, and many lice have evolved resistance to these chemicals. The AirAllé™ treatment, by contrast, offers a safe and effective solution by dehydrating lice—a method to which lice cannot adapt.

The clinic also offers a menu of other services including head checks and lice prevention products as well. The clinic has made a commitment to helping school staff who are on the front lines with

children. Any private or public school principal who registers their school in our Schools Without Lice Program will enable full-time teachers, nurses, or administrators to receive head checks and treatments in the clinic for free. No questions asked. "It's the least we could do for those who work hard every day to teach our children," says Joe.

HELPING PETS THRIVE

Advances in medicine over the years have not just benefitted humans. Many therapies, including those using stem cells and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), have been helping pets and other animals, such as horses, live longer, hap-

I've also seen some of the best responses within a month,” he says.

Results usually last between 12 and 18 months, and if or when the pet needs to be reinjected, there’s no need to undergo the collection procedure all

“THERE’S A LOT OF PROMISE WITH THESE, AND A LOT OF RESEARCH IS BEING DONE.”

pier lives for more than a decade.

“We’ve been using them for about 10 years with our pet patients,” says veterinarian Dr. Adam Bush, the owner of Beauchamp Animal Hospital in Franklin since 2019. “With stem cell therapy, the main issue we use it for is chronic osteoarthritis, plus other musculoskeletal problems in dogs and cats.”

Stem cells are taken right from the animals’ own bodies and then injected into the site that has the inflammation or the injury. The repair cells are harbored in the animal's fat tissue, explains Dr. Bush, and to retrieve them, the animal is put under anesthesia for a short period of time. “It's using the pet’s own body and body cells to help heal and regenerate itself. To me, that's the greatest part.” This process is done on the same day.

Because the stem cells have to regenerate, the results are usually not immediately seen. “It can take three months before you start seeing some improvement, but

over again. “We are able to send extra cells to Ardent Animal Care, and they freeze and store them for future use.”

One dog, a 5-year-old yellow lab named Prue, was a dock diver and very athletic, and she ended up tearing both of her cruciate ACL ligaments in her knees. “It crippled the dog; she couldn't dive anymore,” says Dr. Bush. “The owner, who lived in East Tennessee, so quite far from us, was hesitant to do surgery, so she reached out to us about this therapy, and we did it.” That was about two years ago, and Prue is now back to running around and dock diving.

PRP therapy, he says, is generally better for more acute injuries, such as pulled muscles or wounds. It works pretty quickly, usually within a day or two.

To utilize this treatment, the procedure is much easier. “We just draw blood from the pet, and then we’re able to process it down to the concentrated platelets. This concentrate has many bioactive proteins that assist in tissue repair and healing.”

Another yellow lab named Bump, came in with a bad spider bite and was treated with PRP. The bite healed remarkably well, and both owner and dog were happy with the results.

These therapies are continuing to evolve, says Dr. Bush, and they’re now being used for chronic renal failure, some liver diseases, and other medical issues that aren't joint or arthritis related.

“There's a lot of promise with these, and a lot of research is being done by companies around the country who are doing good work with them. So, hopefully, we'll be able to expand their use and get a better quality of life for our pets.”

He and the other veterinarians at Beauchamp Animal Hospital still use other modalities, such as medication, supplements, laser therapy, and acupuncture, which have also shown good results.

Dr. Adam Bush

Dr. Bush, who has been practicing for 19 years and loves what he does, bought the practice from Dr. Charly Beauchamp, who founded it in 1977. It still retains the same warm and welcoming atmosphere.

“The thing I enjoy the most about being a vet is the relationships I’ve developed with my clients and their pets,” he says. “I’ve seen many of these pets from the first time they come in as little puppies or kittens to when they pass 15 or 16 years later, so I’ve developed real relationships with them.”

Growing up in a small rural community in south Georgia, he says his family’s vet was an integral part of the community. “I think we’re losing that in today’s world with these corporations buying vet clinics. It just changes the whole atmosphere. We’re growing a lot in Franklin, but it's very important to try to maintain those personal relationships with our clients and for me and our vets to get to know a dog or cat over the years.”
