LIFESTYLE LETTER

A New Chapter There are few people who have shaped westside style quite like Elyse Walker. Long before Pacific Palisades became a premier luxury shopping destination, Walker opened a small boutique on Antioch Street and quietly built one of the country's most respected retail businesses. Over the past 25 years, she has dressed generations of women while helping define an effortless aesthetic that has influenced fashion far beyond Los Angeles. That's why it feels especially meaningful to feature her on the cover of our September Style Issue as Palisades Village reopens. After the devastation of the fires, this isn’t simply the return of a beloved shopping destination—it’s the next chapter for a community that has refused to lose hope. In this exclusive interview, Walker reflects on building her business in the Palisades, the heartbreaking loss of her iconic flagship and her exciting new beginning at Palisades Village. More than a fashion story, it's a testament to resilience, vision and the enduring spirit of this community. To complement our cover story, we've also put together an inside look at the reopening of Palisades Village, highlighting the incredible mix of returning favorites and exciting new retailers, restaurants and experiences that will once again make it the ultimate gathering place. We even spotlight neighboring businesses that have reopened or found new homes, showcasing the remarkable momentum and optimism that continues throughout the Palisades. That same spirit carries throughout this issue. I loved catching up with Hannah Hale Redfern, founder of Kilte. Hannah and I were sorority sisters at USC and our children attended preschool together, so it's been especially rewarding to watch her thoughtfully designed knitwear brand flourish. Just up the street on Montana Avenue, we step inside NWLA Bridal, where Nadia Williamson has created an extraordinary bridal salon that pairs world-class designers with a deeply personal approach. We're also honored to highlight content creator and tastemaker Mallory Goldman, who rebuilt her life and business in Brentwood after losing her home in the Palisades Fire. Her story is a beautiful reminder that while places may change, community has an incredible way of carrying us forward. And because style extends well beyond fashion, we visit West Side Oyster Club, where Greg and Yunnie Morena have reimagined the neighborhood seafood shack while honoring their family's deep local roots. To me, style has always been about much more than fashion. It's about creativity, authenticity and the people whose passion helps shape the character of our everyday lives. Enjoy the issue. How to Start the Year Off Strong, According to a College Admissions Guru ARTICLE BY HALSTON BROWN Every September, parents make the same resolution: this is the year we get serious about college prep. Most don’t realize that the choices their child makes this fall can shape their entire application. And with admission to top schools more competitive than ever before, every year—starting the first day of ninth grade—counts. We sat down with Christopher Rim, Founder and CEO of Command Education, a global leader in college admissions consulting, to discuss what families should be doing right now, and how starting early can set students on the path toward their dream school. Why does the start of the school year matter more for admissions than people think? Success in admissions isn’t just about outcomes; it’s about skills and strategies. The school year moves fast, and students need to go into it with a clear roadmap so that small missteps don’t derail their progress. A student can certainly recover from a C on a midterm or losing out on a club presidency—but their resilience depends on having the right support and strategy in place, so that they can set specific goals and pivot as needed. What should parents of a freshman or even a middle schooler be doing as the new school year kicks off? Students should start identifying and exploring their interests as early as middle school so that when they get to high school, they can begin to build a cohesive, eye-catching profile from day one. At this stage, academic rigor matters, but so do soft skills like time management, emotional intelligence, communication,

and leadership. Targeting character-building, teamwork, and personal growth will benefit students in the short and long term. What’s one thing you wish every parent understood before senior year hits? Passion and curiosity can’t be manufactured senior year. Admissions officers can tell the difference between genuine interest developed over time and a resume assembled to impress admissions committees. The work that matters most happens years before students begin assembling their applications. With so many college consulting options out there, how should parents evaluate which one is actually right for their family? If a student doesn’t connect with their consultant and isn’t personally invested in the work they do together, it will manifest in the outcomes. At Command Education, we pair students with near-peer mentors who inspire and connect with students. Rather than handing students a checklist, our mentors work to understand who each student actually is, so that everything from course selection to essay topics grows out of genuine interest. Ultimately, parents should look for a consultancy that prepares students not just to get into a great school, but to thrive once they get there.

Mentorship That Empowers Excellence Getting into a top school takes more than checking boxes. While traditional college consultants rely on checklists and cookie-cutter formulas, Command Education pairs each student with a dedicated mentor who offers unlimited oneon-one support to help them discover their passions, make a meaningful impact, and craft a story admissions officers won’t forget.

The content creator, writer and founder of the Substack Catching Up has built a loyal following by sharing her approachable yet elevated fashion sense, honest storytelling and the everyday moments that resonate with readers everywhere. “I love helping women build wardrobes that feel effortless and wearable,” Goldman says. “My goal has always been to make getting dressed feel less overwhelming and to create a community that feels like catching up with a friend.” She has also candidly shared her experience navigating motherhood and life with an autoimmune disease, bringing honesty and authenticity to everything she creates. A native of Tenafly, New Jersey, and a USC graduate, Goldman started her family in Pacific Palisades with her husband, Ben, their son, Shep, and their dog, Sadie. After losing their home in the wildfires, they found a fresh start in Brentwood, where walks to coffee, afternoons at the park and time with friends at the Country Mart have become part of their new chapter. “Brentwood feels like the best of LA,” she says. “It has such a neighborhood feel while still being close to everything. LOCA L CATCH Yunnie and Greg Morena outside West Side Oyster Club

With a legacy rooted on the Santa Monica Pier, Greg and Yunnie Morena reinvent the neighborhood seafood shack with West Side Oyster Club ARTICLE BY CAROLE DIXON PHOTOGRAPHY BY PALM & OCEAN

26

NOW OP E N | FO O D + BEVE RAGE

It might be September, but if you’ve lived on the westside for any length of time, you know the “June gloom” marine layer can linger through much of the summer before a fall heat wave finally burns it away. And when the morning fog lifts, there’s a new oceanfront dining destination serving buttery lobster rolls, tangy key lime pie, crisp cocktails and picture-perfect views.

The interiors pay tribute to Santa Monica beach and skate culture

West Side Oyster Club is the latest venture from Santa Monica locals Greg and Yunnie Morena, who also operate The Albright, a family-owned institution on the Santa Monica Pier since 1977. Yunnie’s Korean American parents founded SM Pier Seafood on the original site before Greg and Yunnie took over the business and renamed it in 2013. West Side Oyster Club represents the next evolution of that family legacy. The Morenas’ newest venture occupies the former Blue Plate Oysterette space, originally created by restaurateur Jenny Morton, who also owns Blue Plate Taco just down the street on Ocean Avenue, as well as Divine Vintage Wine Bar & Shop on Montana Avenue. “Jenny is one of those super creatives,” says Greg. “She’s among the best of us. She wanted to step back a little, and we stepped in. It always starts with a conversation among friends, but the stars aligned and it all made sense.” It also made sense to preserve the restaurant’s original character. Los Angeles-based designer David Alvarez of Studio Alvarez retained the cozy, casual-meets-nautical aesthetic while honoring Morton’s original vision and the classic seaside setting. The result is a welcoming community gathering place that reflects Southern California’s surf and skate culture. The Morenas layered in deeply personal touches. A gallery wall stretching above the banquettes is filled with repurposed nautical pieces and artifacts from Greg’s life growing up in Santa Monica, including a Dogtown Skateboard—Greg is a co-owner of the iconic brand—his surfboard, family photos and memorabilia celebrating local history. “My brother took that photo of The Albright, and that little pulley

is from my dad’s and brother’s boat,” Greg says while giving a tour of the restaurant. “This net is from Daniel Myers, who makes the stellar key lime pie in-house. His family’s a big fishing family.” The beach-inspired interiors continue with natural woods accented by a palette of crisp whites and blues. A mirrored walk-up menu allows guests to order lobster rolls, fish and chips or splurge on Grand Cru caviar to enjoy as a sunset picnic in Palisades Park or on the pier. Caviar service is offered in three sizes and comes with crème fraîche, potato chips and chives. “It’s a casual seafood place, but you can add caviar—and even get caviar to go. That’s the dream,” Greg says. The menu ranges from a raw bar featuring East and West Coast oysters to towering seafood platters, shrimp and chips, lobster rolls and the restaurant’s signature clam chowder served in a San Francisco sourdough bread bowl. “We got to bring in all the things that we love, and a lot of the classics from the pier,” Greg says. Among his personal favorites are the New England-style fried oysters with chips and the North Shore garlic shrimp. “My wife and I go to Hawaii all the time. I love the North Shore and the food truck scene—it’s paradise,” he says. “There’s an incredible shrimp truck called Giovanni’s that serves a rich garlic sauce over rice. They do peel-and-eat shrimp, but our version is peeled so you can order it for lunch and still shake somebody’s hand afterward.” Another insider favorite is the offmenu Caesar salad prepared with fried oysters, “Zoe’s Way.” “This is named after one of my wife’s dearest friends, Zoe Winkler,” Greg says. “She came in one day, tried the Caesar salad, and said, ‘I want to try oysters on it.’” A new dish was born on the spot. Greg also credits his fashion background for shaping his approach to hospitality. “I love the behindthe-scenes part of the restaurant business,” he says. “It’s what I loved about fashion.” Before entering the restaurant industry, Greg served as COO of Undefeated and CFO of The Hundreds, while Yunnie spent 18 years at Fred Segal in Santa Monica. “The creative people are my favorite, and I love the idea of building things over time. In fashion, the design doesn’t hit the shelf for a year, but food is ready in 15 minutes.” The cocktails arrive even faster, and the outdoor patio provides the perfect setting for sunset drinks. Favorites include the Palisades Sunset with chipotle-infused tequila, lime and pomegranate; the White Sandy Beach with rum, lime, grapefruit, maraschino and almond; and the West Side Spritz featuring vodka, cucumber, strawberry, Aperol and sparkling wine. Another crowd favorite is the oyster shooter, made with house-made spicy Bloody Mary mix and a choice of vodka or gin. Greg acknowledges that the restaurant business can be trial by fire, but he’s grateful for the opportunities their family business provides to experiment with new ideas. One of those is Yunnie’s successful charcuterie company, KimChi Avocado, which has since expanded into candy boards through Sweet Chi Candy Company. Greg has also partnered with Uncle Paulie’s Deli and recently opened a new location near Dodger Stadium. Together, the Morenas continue to make their mark as entrepreneurs, community leaders and stewards of the Santa Monica Pier. Greg led The Albright to become the first certified sustainable business on the pier, earning both the grand prize at the Santa Monica Sustainability Quality Awards and the Stewardship of the Natural Environment Award while helping divert more than one million pounds of organic waste from landfills each year. He also serves on the board of Heal the Bay and oversees an aquaculture program at Santa Monica College. “We’re going to have to figure out how to live on this planet,” Greg says. “I believe that action is the key—and seafood.”

Greg and Yunnie first met as children growing up in Santa Monica. “She moved next door when I was 12. It took us a while to figure it out, but we got together when we were 27. We’ve been together for 37 years.” Today, the couple lives on Santa Monica’s north side with their two sons. “Not many people who grew up in a city of millions can say they married the boy next door and went on to carry forward a family legacy business that had been part of the community for more than 40 years,” says Yunnie. “It all sounds very smalltown—and honestly, that’s exactly what opening this new seafood shack by the sea has made Santa Monica feel like again. From hanging our YMCA

camp rags on the dining room walls, to employing local high school students, to already greeting our regulars by name, it feels like we’re bringing back a piece of the Santa Monica we grew up with.” Greg echoes the sentiment. “This is how we rejuvenate our souls. We have to take chances and do projects that make us feel good, give back and pay homage to our history and heritage. That’s what West Side Oyster Club is all about.” West Side Oyster Club 1355 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica 310-310-8861 westsideoysterclub.com

“I WANTED CLOTHES THAT LOOKED POLISHED BUT WERE PRACTICAL ENOUGH FOR REAL LIFE.”

When Hannah Hale Redfern became a mother, everything changed. After years working in finance and fashion, the westside resident suddenly found herself navigating a new reality: baby appointments, coffee meetings, errands and endless to-do lists, all while trying to maintain a sense of personal style. “I still wanted to feel like myself,” she recalls. “I wanted clothes that looked polished but were practical enough for real life.” As she talked with friends, colleagues and fellow mothers, Redfern realized she wasn’t alone. Women everywhere were juggling careers, families, travel and countless responsibilities while searching for clothing that could keep up. Luxury knitwear existed—but it often required special care. Comfortable clothing was easy to find—but it rarely felt elevated. “There was something missing from our closets,” she says. That realization became Kilte. Officially launched in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, the female-founded knitwear brand has become known for its signature machine-washable cashmere and cotton-cashmere collections, thoughtfully designed for women who do it all. Built without outside investment, the company has grown from a handful of samples into a

nationally recognized direct-to-consumer brand with a devoted online following. Yet Kilte remains deeply rooted on the westside: Redfern lives just minutes from her shop in the Santa Monica Flats with her husband, Luke, their daughter Rowan and two younger sons, and much of the community that first embraced the brand came from the interconnected neighborhoods of Brentwood, Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades. Raised between Portland and a small farming community in Eastern Oregon, Redfern grew up watching two entrepreneurial parents build successful businesses from the ground up. While fashion had always been a passion, she initially pursued finance, moving to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California and then beginning her career in investment banking before moving into private equity. At Stanford Business School— which she attended alongside her now husband, Luke—she found herself drawn back toward apparel, spending one summer working on a knitwear startup before ultimately deciding she wanted to create something of her own. “I’ve always known I wanted to do something entrepreneurial,” she says. “I just didn’t know exactly what that looked like.” CONTINUED >

Returning to LA after graduation, she joined Lucky Brand as Director of Strategy, gaining broad exposure to the inner workings of the fashion industry alongside executives across merchandising, production, sourcing and planning. Looking back, she credits that experience with preparing her for entrepreneurship. “I wasn’t necessarily the expert in one area,” she says. “But I had exposure to every part of the business.” Motherhood transformed that entrepreneurial ambition into a business idea. Like so many new moms, Redfern found herself living in leggings while searching for something that felt both luxurious and practical. Before there was a website or social media following, she developed a handful of knitwear prototypes and invited friends into her home for a trunk show, asking every guest to try on the pieces and complete detailed surveys about fit, styling and fabric. “I wanted proof of concept,” she says. “I wanted to know that women actually wanted this.” They did. Kilte officially launched online in October 2020. Without outside funding or a large marketing budget, Redfern relied almost entirely on wordof-mouth, personally reaching out to friends, customers and anyone willing to support the fledgling business and asking them simply to wear the pieces and share them on social media. Early organic support from influencers including Julia Berolzheimer, Mary Orton and Arielle Charnas helped introduce the brand to an even wider audience, while later

collaborations with Berolzheimer and Orton became defining milestones in Kilte’s growth. Trunk shows and pop-ups soon followed in cities such as New York, Dallas, Palm Beach and Charleston, building an even stronger sense of community around the brand. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate,” Redfern says. “The women around me have been so supportive from the very beginning. They believed in the brand before it was really a brand.” As demand grew, so did the collections. Determined to create knitwear that fit the pace of modern life, Redfern spent months working alongside Italian mills to develop what would become one of Kilte’s defining innovations: machine-washable 100 percent cashmere. Many told her it couldn’t be done, but she found partners willing to experiment, combining specialized yarn construction and finishing techniques to create cashmere that could be cared for at home without sacrificing quality. The breakthrough came with the Liz Set, which quickly became one of the brand’s signature offerings. Today, along with the Elizabeth, Taylor and Clara sets, it’s a favorite among women looking for elevated everyday dressing that transitions effortlessly from day to dinner or travel. Every Kilte detail is intentional—from mother-of-pearl buttons and zippers to intricate pointelle stitching and premium Italian yarns. Even the names carry meaning. Every style is named after a woman who helped Redfern along the way—friends, mentors, employees and supporters who believed in Kilte from the beginning. “It takes a village to build a business,” she says. “It’s my way of saying thank you.” That philosophy extends beyond the clothing itself. Redfern intentionally built Kilte around flexibility, with much of her team made up of women—many of them mothers—working in well-balanced or fractional roles that allow them to build meaningful careers while raising families. “It was important to create the kind of workplace I wished existed when I became a mom,” she says. Earlier this year, Kilte reached another milestone with the opening of its first flagship boutique on Montana Avenue. Created by Los Angeles interior designer Georgia Howe—who also decorated Redfern’s own home—the warm and inviting space reflects the ease and comfort of the brand with vintage furnishings, thoughtfully curated books, colorful textiles and a commissioned painting by artist Isabella Innis, who once taught Redfern’s daughter. More than

Redfern and her daughter Rowan in matching Kilte

a retail destination, the boutique has quickly become a gathering place for the community, hosting conversations with Mother Untitled founder and author Neha Ruch, charitable fundraisers benefiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, collaborations with fellow female founders and neighborhood events. “It’s much more than a store,” Redfern says. “It’s a place where people can connect.” Looking ahead, Redfern sees continued growth while staying true to the values that shaped Kilte from the beginning. Conversations are already underway for a second boutique in one of the brand’s strongest markets, while new collections continue to introduce fresh silhouettes and the thoughtful details synonymous with the brand. Yet even as Kilte expands nationally, its mission remains simple: not just creating beautiful sweaters or matching sets, but clothing that helps women feel confident as they navigate careers, motherhood, friendships and everything in between. “I wanted to build something that worked as hard as the women wearing it,” Redfern says. “Because if there’s anyone who deserves that, it’s them.” Kilte 1306 Montana Ave., Santa Monica 310-310-8798 kiltecollection.com S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Home Again Elyse Walker

Elyse Walker returns to Pacific Palisades with a stunning new flagship at Palisades Village, celebrating the community that inspired her business and the next chapter of its remarkable story

Elyse Walker's first boutique on Antioch Street in Pacific Palisades

Inside the original Elyse Walker boutique

For twenty-five years, the corner of Antioch Street and Swarthmore in Pacific Palisades belonged to Elyse Walker. Not in the literal sense. The boutique expanded over time—one storefront became two, then three, eventually stretching nearly an entire block—but in the minds of generations of women, that corner became synonymous with her name. It was where daughters shopped with their mothers and husbands searched for milestone gifts, where lifelong friendships began in fitting rooms and where luxury felt less intimidating than personal. “I just couldn’t understand why there wasn’t great retail,” Walker recalls of the initial idea to open an eponymous boutique. “There was a good store here and there, but overall I felt like the community deserved

something special.” Today, as Pacific Palisades celebrates the reopening of Palisades Village and Walker’s return in a stunning new flagship, that corner—and the woman who transformed it—feels more significant than ever. Raised 3,000 miles away in Scarsdale, New York, Walker grew up surrounded by fashion. Her father owned a successful shoe company, while her mother operated a designer footwear boutique where Walker spent countless hours on the sales floor, in the stockroom and traveling to Europe to learn about craftsmanship and design. Ironically, Walker never intended to build a career in fashion. She studied applied mathematics at Columbia University and imagined a future on Wall Street before life unexpectedly changed course. After her mother’s passing while she was still in college, Walker found herself stepping into the family business, discovering that retail wasn’t simply about beautiful products—it was about understanding people. That lesson would shape everything that followed. When Walker and her husband eventually settled in Pacific Palisades to raise their family, the neighborhood immediately reminded her of home. “It had that same small-town feeling,” she says. “People knew each other. They supported local businesses. They cared.” She loved the community CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/B REN T WO O D L A

“I’ve always wanted people to walk into the store and feel comfortable. Fashion can be intimidating. I Elyse Walker and Rick Caruso at their opening announcement

but thought it deserved better shopping. So, in 1999, she opened a modest 900-square-foot boutique right by Village School, where her two sons were students. “I picked the location because it was two blocks from my kids’ school,” she says. “I could do drop-off and pickup and still build a business.” She wasn’t trying to build a fashion empire. She simply wanted to create the kind of boutique she wished existed—a place where women felt welcomed rather than intimidated and where exceptional service mattered as much as exceptional clothing. It was a practical decision, but it also helped transform the then-sleepy town of Pacific Palisades into a retail destination. Over the years, that original boutique evolved into an extraordinary expression of Walker’s vision, offering an impeccably curated mix of the world’s most coveted luxury houses—including Celine, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, The Row, Khaite, Chloé, Loewe, Valentino and Miu Miu—alongside emerging designers Walker often championed long before they became household names. “I’ve always wanted people to walk into the store and feel comfortable,”Walker says.”Fashion can be intimidating. I never wanted our store to feel that way.” As the business grew, so did the experience. A dedicated space showcased contemporary collections from brands such as Nili Lotan, Toteme, Éterne and Ulla Johnson, while an expansive salon devoted to shoes, handbags, fine jewelry and accessories allowed clients to build an entire wardrobe under one roof. More than a boutique, it became a place where personal style was thoughtfully curated from head to toe. Just as distinctive as Walker’s eye for fashion was the team she assembled. Long before “personal styling” became an industry buzzword, she built her business around a simple philosophy: know the customer first. Her stylists became trusted advisors, encouraged to understand clients beyond their sizes—to know their careers, their families, the vacations they were planning, the weddings they were attending and the moments that mattered most. “You tell a customer, ‘I don’t love

never wanted our store to feel that way.”

that on you,’” Walker says matter-of-factly. “You didn’t lose a sale. You might have just made a friend for life.” That kind of honesty became the signature of the Elyse Walker experience. Women traveled from Brentwood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and across Los Angeles for appointments, while visitors from New York, Texas and beyond made the boutique a must-visit whenever they were in town. Over time, Walker cultivated lasting relationships with an extraordinary roster of actresses, entrepreneurs and tastemakers—including Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Meyer and Rachel Zoe—many of whom returned season after season not simply for the fashion, but for the trust, candor and personal connection they found there. Walker never made a distinction between celebrity clients and anyone else. “They’re all just women getting dressed,” she says with a smile. As word spread, so did the business. What began as a neighborhood boutique in Pacific Palisades quietly evolved into one of the country’s most respected independent luxury retailers. Walker expanded thoughtfully, opening locations in Newport Beach, Calabasas and St. Helena before bringing the brand to New York, with boutiques in Tribeca, the Upper East Side and Southampton. She also embraced e-commerce early, extending the same highly personalized styling experience that defined the original boutique to clients across the country. Yet despite the national growth, Walker never stopped thinking like the owner of that first hometown store. She still walks every sales floor, rearranges displays and notices when the lighting isn’t quite right. “I always compare it to a restaurant,” she says. “The flowers matter. The music matters. The lighting matters. Every little detail matters because that’s what creates the experience.” Around the same time, Rick Caruso was envisioning Palisades Village just across Sunset Boulevard—a

A rendering of the new Elyse Walker flagship at Palisades Village

walkable town center where beautifully designed public spaces, thoughtfully curated retailers and celebrated restaurants would create a true gathering place for the community. Walker had already proven that Pacific Palisades could support world-class retail without sacrificing the warmth and intimacy of a neighborhood. It was a philosophy they shared: shopping should be about more than transactions. It should bring people together. For years, Caruso encouraged Walker to relocate to the Village. “He kept saying, ‘You’ve got to come over here,’” Walker recalls with a laugh. Her response never changed. “You never move a good store.” Rather than relocating the flagship, Walker proposed something entirely new: Towne by Elyse Walker. The contemporary concept allowed her to become part of Palisades Village while preserving the beloved original across the street. Together, the two boutiques complemented one another—one rooted in timeless luxury, the other offering a more contemporary point of view, as well as menswear—while remaining united by the same philosophy of thoughtful editing, exceptional service and genuine relationships. For years, it was the perfect balance. Then, on January 7, 2025, everything changed. As wildfire swept through Pacific Palisades, Walker watched from her home in Northern California, refreshing her phone and fielding calls as the unimaginable unfolded. Soon, the messages began arriving. Her beloved Antioch Street flagship—the boutique she had spent twenty-five years building, expanding and nurturing—was gone. Yet when Walker reflects on those days, she rarely

begins by talking about the store. She talks about people. “My leadership team got everyone out before they even had to evacuate,” she says. “Nobody was thinking the Palisades was going to burn down. We were just thinking, ‘Let’s get everybody home safely.’” Within days, her attention had shifted from what had been lost to the people who had built the business alongside her. “By Friday, I was already looking at temporary spaces,” she says. “I wanted everyone working again.” For a company built on relationships, the weeks that followed became the greatest test of everything

“It’s kind of symbolic that we’re going to be on that very corner. It means we’re back. We built it once. We’re going to build it again—and this time we’re going to build it even stronger.”

Walker had spent decades creating. Employees were welcomed into other store locations. Longtime clients followed them there without hesitation or worked with stylists remotely. Designers, vendors and partners stepped forward to help however they could. The culture Walker had carefully built proved stronger than anyone could have imagined. “We really practiced what we preached,” she says. “We always say we’re a family, and during that time we truly were.” She pauses before offering perhaps the simplest—and most powerful— reflection of the entire experience. “Our culture was stronger than our buildings.” As Walker explored spaces in Brentwood and Santa Monica, she remained in close contact with Caruso. Their conversations, once centered on bringing a second concept to Palisades Village, gradually shifted toward something much bigger. “Elyse has always embodied the spirit of the Palisades,” Caruso says. “She’s an entrepreneur who built an extraordinary business while remaining deeply connected to the community she serves.” Now, for the first time, the question wasn’t whether to move—it was how to help lead the neighborhood’s return. Together, they decided the time had come for Walker’s flagship to become part of the Village she had helped inspire. “Having Elyse’s flagship at Palisades Village feels exactly right because she represents the kind of local leadership and authenticity that has always made this community unique,” Caruso says. Rather than recreating what had been lost, Walker would open a spectacular new home on the iconic corner directly across Sunset Boulevard from her original Antioch Street boutique—a poignant homecoming that honored the past while embracing the future. “I feel like we were the first retailer to say, ‘This is a vibrant shopping community,’” Walker says. “It’s kind of symbolic that we’re going to be on that very corner. It means we’re back. We’re not going anywhere. We built it once. We’re going to build it again—and this time we’re going to build it even stronger.” Today, that vision occupies one of the most prominent corners in Palisades Village. Walker’s stunning new flagship combines the former Saint Laurent, Eres and Lululemon spaces into a light-filled home stretching from the corner to Erewhon, while Towne by Elyse Walker remains nearby, welcoming customers back with the familiar feel they loved before the fire. Together, the two stores represent not simply a return, but a new chapter for both the brand and the community. As this issue reaches homes, Palisades Village has just welcomed the community back following its long-awaited reopening. Returning favorites including Brunello Cucinelli, Veronica Beard, Zimmermann, A.L.C., Paige, Jennifer Meyer, Anine Bing, Toteme, Angelini and Blue Ribbon Sushi have been joined by newcomers such as LESET, Violet Grey, Mother Denim, Xirena, Loomey’s Toys, Truly Pizza and Nancy Silverton’s Spacca Tutto, with additional retailers— including Erewhon—opening in the months ahead.

42

Together, they represent far more than a collection of shops and restaurants. They symbolize another meaningful step in the ongoing renewal of Pacific Palisades. Walker hopes the excitement surrounding the reopening is only the beginning. “I hope people come for lunch. I hope they bring their kids to the park. I hope they wait in line for ice cream—and of course, shop,” she says. “We’re going to have a great grand opening and a lot of momentum, but this is a ten-year commitment. We need people to come back this year, next year and the year after that. The more business we can give the Palisades over the next decade, the faster it will affect people’s lives.” She believes the Palisades has always been sustained by the communities around it—Brentwood, Santa Monica and beyond—and that its future depends on that same spirit of support. As Pacific Palisades celebrates the reopening of Palisades Village, it is also celebrating a woman who quietly helped lay the foundation for it decades earlier. Long before the Village became a destination, Elyse Walker showed what thoughtful retail, genuine hospitality and unwavering belief in a community could accomplish. The address has changed, but the mission never has. From the very beginning, Walker understood something many businesses never do. Fashion may bring people through the door—but community is what keeps them coming back. Elyse Walker 1000 N. Swarthmore Ave., Pacific Palisades 310-230-8882 elysewalker.com

Community Effort As Palisades Village reopens, beloved businesses and fresh faces are helping restore the heart of the neighborhood

Nineteen months after the Palisades Fire, Pacific Palisades has reached another major milestone in its recovery. With the reopening of Palisades Village, the neighborhood’s walkable town center is once again welcoming residents and visitors with a thoughtful mix of luxury retailers, longtime favorites and exciting new options. More than the return of a shopping and dining destination, it reflects renewed confidence in the future of Pacific Palisades and the businesses that have remained committed to rebuilding alongside it. “This is about much more than reopening a shopping destination,” says Rick Caruso. “It represents hope, resilience and the beginning of the next chapter for the Palisades.” Envisioned by Caruso as a modern neighborhood hamlet designed for gathering as much as shopping, the Village is reopening with nearly every storefront occupied. Returning favorites include Brunello Cucinelli, Veronica Beard, Zimmermann, Jennifer Meyer, A.L.C., Paige, Toteme, Cult Gaia and Reformation, alongside Blue Ribbon Sushi, Angelini, Alfred, Porta Via, McConnell’s Fine Ice Cream and the Bay Theatre. Erewhon is expected to reopen in early 2027. The Village also welcomes an exciting collection of newcomers. Elyse Walker’s spectacular flagship now anchors one of its most prominent corners, while LESET opens its first standalone boutique alongside luxury beauty destination Violet Grey and California lifestyle brand Xirena. “As the community continues to rebuild and look ahead, we’re proud to stand alongside our neighbors and celebrate the resilience and spirit that makes the Palisades so special,” says Sherif Guirgis, CEO of Violet Grey. Mother, the Los Angeles denim brand co-founded by westside resident Lela Becker, also makes its Village debut after its nearly completed boutique across Sunset Boulevard was destroyed in the fires. Loomey’s Toys, the cherished neighborhood toy store that lost its Via de la Paz location, has found a new

home here, while Ludus, the martial arts studio founded by longtime Palisades instructor James Gavsie and Caruso’s son, Justin, continues its investment in local families. The culinary lineup is equally compelling. Legendary local chef Nancy Silverton brings her first westside restaurant, Spacca Tutto, to the Village. “Los Angeles has such a strong community,” Silverton says. “I’m honored to be a part of the future of the Palisades.” She is joined by Ueki by Blue Ribbon Sushi, K Bakery—another local favorite getting a new home—and Alphabet Bar & Grill, a buzzy neighborhood restaurant from The h.wood Group and James Beard Award winning chef Tim Hollingsworth, inspired by the Palisades’ iconic Alphabet Streets. Erewhon CEO Tony Antoci shares in the optimism, calling the market’s return “a meaningful way to contribute to the healing and renewal of this neighborhood.” Yet the Palisades’ comeback extends well beyond the Village. Among the first businesses to reopen after the fires was Ruby Nails & Spa, which quickly became more than a neighborhood salon. It evolved into a gathering place where women reconnected, shared updates and supported one another through the difficult months that followed. Elizabeth Lamont reopened in November 2025 after her longtime home furnishings and design boutique survived the fire, even though she lost her own home. Today, she and her team are helping families furnish the houses they are rebuilding. “Our clients come in with smiles on their faces,” she says. “They tell us their stories of loss and also of hope.” Other neighborhood favorites soon followed. Canale-Martinez Salon reopened in January 2026, while BOCA welcomed customers back to its carefully curated women’s boutique. “We love and care

about this community so much,” says Canale-Martinez co-founder Michael Canalé. “We wanted to help the best we could by being there for everyone.” Across Sunset Boulevard, jewelry purveyor Jaimie Geller has also returned. After losing her longtime Antioch Street boutique, she opened a beautiful new space just steps from Palisades Village. While rebuilding the home she lost, Geller designed the boutique to feel like one—a warm place where neighbors can gather and reconnect. “I want this to be a place for our community to relax and hang out while we support each other through this surreal experience,” she says. Just down the block, Pali Trading Post represents an entirely new chapter. Founded by Palisades resident Michelle Murphy, the shop celebrates local makers and small businesses while preserving the character of the neighborhood. “If those of us who called the Palisades home before the fire don’t help rebuild it, we risk losing the very character that made this community so special,” Murphy says. A few doors down, Marram Cabinetry is opening its Los Angeles flagship, bringing its stunning bespoke cabinetry and millwork to the neighborhood. The showroom’s arrival is another sign of the confidence businesses are placing in Pacific Palisades and their commitment to helping homeowners recover.

“If those of us who called the Palisades home before the fire don’t help rebuild it, we risk losing the very character that made this community so special.” From luxury flagships and neighborhood institutions to entirely new concepts born from resilience, the reopening of Palisades Village marks far more than a return to business. It reflects a community investing in its future—and proving that rebuilding happens one storefront, one conversation and one neighbor at a time. For Nadia Williamson, every wedding dress tells a story—not just of exquisite craftsmanship or extraordinary design, but of family, celebration and one of the most meaningful days in a woman’s life. That philosophy has shaped every detail of NWLA Bridal, the elegant Montana Avenue boutique Williamson has transformed into one of Los Angeles’ premier bridal destinations, where brides travel from across California—and often across the country—to find their dress, welcomed by a close-knit team of expert stylists. “We want this to be a place where you can relax and enjoy the experience,” Williamson says. “Come in, have a glass of champagne and just slow everything down.” Williamson’s own journey began far from Los Angeles, in Regina, the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, where a love of fashion first took root. After high school, she enrolled in a costume design program before leaving university to work in the film industry, spending nearly a decade building her career on productions featuring actors including Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris and Jamie Foxx. “I started at the very bottom,” Williamson says. “I was the gopher. I would do the shopping, be on set, run around and do all the hard jobs. Then eventually, I worked my way up.” CONTINUED >

Those years gave her an appreciation for impeccable construction, luxurious fabrics and timeless design—an eye that still guides every gown she selects today. She later earned a diploma in Fashion Design from Montréal’s LaSalle College before opening a boutique in her hometown. “I just wanted to sell beautiful dresses,” she says with a laugh. But a traditional women’s boutique wasn’t sustainable in Saskatchewan’s seasonal climate, so bridal—with a focus on local designers—became the heart of the business instead. Twenty years later, that original Canadian boutique, NWL Dresses, continues to thrive. Then life brought another unexpected chapter. While visiting Los Angeles for work, Williamson met the man who would become her husband. After relocating to California, she briefly considered trying something completely different. “I actually thought maybe I’d sell luxury cars,” she says, laughing. “My husband kept saying, ‘You should really open a bridal shop here.’” He was right. Seven years ago, Williamson opened NWLA Bridal, a tiny, 500-square-foot boutique on Montana Avenue, knowing very few people and handling every appointment herself. “For years it was only me working there because I couldn’t afford staff,” she says. “I might have three appointments a week.” Without a marketing budget, the business grew almost entirely through word of mouth. “My brides really became like my family,” she recalls, tears welling in her eyes. “They would tell their friends, who would tell their sisters, who would tell someone else. That’s really how everything grew.” As demand continued to increase, Williamson took another leap of faith. Four years ago, she moved into her current, much larger Montana Avenue boutique, allowing her to welcome more brides while preserving the intimate experience that had become her signature. “People couldn’t get in,” she recalls of the decision to expand. “I was working constantly trying to accommodate everyone, so I knew it was time.” Recently redesigned with interior designer Molly Woodland—one of NWLA’s own brides—the light-filled space feels more like an elegant home than a retail store, with soft blush tones, luxurious textures and couture-inspired details, including upholstered benches finished with fabric-covered buttons reminiscent of those found on wedding gowns. Two fitting suites allow each bride and her family to enjoy uninterrupted time together. “We wanted it to feel like someone’s living room,” Williamson says. “Comfortable, cozy and private.” Before a single gown is selected, Williamson and her team want to know the bride’s story. “For me, the sweetest moment is when we

first meet the family,” she says. “Whether it’s a mom, grandmother, sisters or best friends, you can really feel all the love and excitement. That connection helps us help the bride.” That personalized approach extends to every member of the NWLA team. Head stylist Debra Shirley, an accomplished milliner, creates exquisite custom veils and headpieces. Ann Costigan, a celebrated artist and painter, brings years of luxury bridal expertise from Saks Fifth Avenue, while Jessica Andree, a veteran editorial stylist, adds a refined fashion perspective. Together, they guide brides through every step of the process with warmth, honesty and an expert eye, providing the same thoughtful support from a bride’s first appointment to the moment she steps into her gown on her wedding day. The dresses themselves are equally exceptional. Williamson has carefully curated a collection of the world’s leading bridal designers, including Elie Saab, Lela Rose, Mark Ingram and Francesca Miranda, along with celebrated Israeli designers Lihi Hod, Mira Zwillinger and Lee Petra Grebenau, whose handcrafted gowns are renowned for their intricate detail and couture-level craftsmanship. “I saw Lihi Hod’s gowns on Instagram and completely fell in love,” Williamson recalls. “I called and said, ‘I’ll do anything to carry your dresses.’” The partnership has endured ever since. “They supported me when I was nobody,” she says. “I’ll never forget that.”

Throughout the year, NWLA Bridal hosts exclusive designer trunk shows, giving brides the rare opportunity to preview collections months before they arrive anywhere else. Many of the gowns are made-to-measure and require six to eight months to complete before arriving in Santa Monica. “I think about everyone who touches each dress,” Williamson says. “The designer, the people sewing every detail, the embroidery, the fabric—it goes through so many hands before it gets here. By the time the bride puts it on, it’s almost like a little piece of jewelry.” Designers regularly create custom necklines, overskirts, sleeves and intricate details, ensuring every gown feels uniquely personal. “It’s all about the fit,” Williamson says. “You want every bride to feel like the dress was made just for her.” Once each gown arrives, Williamson works closely with master tailor Nano Ohansian of Tailored by Ted, located right next door, guiding brides through meticulous alterations that ensure every dress fits flawlessly. “She’s amazing,” Williamson says. “We’re like sisters.” Williamson’s success has also expanded beyond Southern California. Last year, she opened NWD Bridal boutique in Dallas near Highland Park, bringing her signature blend of couture fashion and personalized service to another vibrant community. Outside of work,

Williamson and her husband settled in Pacific Palisades, falling in love with its close-knit, small-town feel. Among the many brides she has had the privilege of dressing was Megan Caruso, wife of Rick Caruso’s son, Justin, for the couple’s elegant August 2024 wedding at Rosewood Miramar Beach. Just months later, the devastating Palisades fire claimed her family’s home. “I’m just happy the store was okay,” she says. “We had brides’ gowns here.” Now rebuilding, she looks forward to returning to the neighborhood she loves. “The community has been incredible,” Williamson says. “Everyone has supported one another.” After helping thousands of brides over more than two decades, the emotion of watching someone find “the one” has never faded. “I still cry,” she admits with a smile. “Sometimes the bride cries. Sometimes her mom cries. Sometimes I cry.” For Williamson, every appointment is about so much more than selecting a beautiful dress—it’s a memory that will live on for generations, in photographs, in family stories and in the hearts of the brides she has been privileged to serve. “It’s never really about the dress,” she says. “It’s about the people, the love and the memories they’ll have forever.” NWLA Bridal 1627 Montana Ave., Suite D 424-238-5202 nwlabridal.com

Before becoming one of Los Angeles’ top luxury real estate agents with more than $1 billion in career sales, Shelton Wilder faced her share of obstacles and moments of uncertainty. Today, she’s pulling back the curtain on that journey in Southern But Savage, a funny, heartfelt and deeply practical book that blends memoir with business advice for anyone building a career, brand or new beginning. Filled with personal stories, hard-earned lessons and actionable practices rooted in intentional optimism, the book encourages readers to stop waiting for the perfect moment and simply begin. Known throughout LA for her authenticity, consistency and relationship-first approach to business, Wilder believes success isn’t reserved for those with perfect circumstances—it’s built by showing up, learning along the way and refusing to quit. While the book is rooted in real estate, its message is universal. “Whether you’re starting a business, changing careers or simply trying to move forward after a difficult season, I hope readers see that extraordinary futures can come from imperfect beginnings,” she says. Below, she shares more about the inspiration behind the book and the lessons she hopes readers will take with them

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE SOUTHERN BUT SAVAGE?

People kept asking how I built my business and navigated the difficult seasons along the way. I realized I was having the same conversations over and over, so I decided to write it all down. The book is the honest story of starting before you’re ready and figuring it out as you go.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE BOOK?

It’s what I wish someone had given me at the beginning of my career. It’s funny, honest and practical—part memoir, part business master class. Every chapter ends with a “Positron Practice,” offering real action steps readers can immediately apply to their own lives and careers.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE TITLE SOUTHERN BUT SAVAGE?

People often assume that being Southern means being soft. I am warm, welcoming and genuinely hospitable—but I’m also fiercely committed to my values and unwilling to shrink my dreams for anyone else’s comfort. That’s what “savage” means to me: showing up fully and standing firmly in your integrity.

IS THERE ONE STORY THAT ESPECIALLY STANDS OUT?

Definitely my Shark Tank experience, which happened before I launched my real estate career. I went on the show expecting to pitch my product—the Shemie slip—but instead found myself talking publicly about some very personal issues. Every Shark said no, but being vulnerable connected me with thousands of people—and ultimately helped fund my business. It taught me that authenticity is often your greatest strength.

WHAT’S BEEN THE BIGGEST KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS?

Consistency and relationships. I’ve posted a “Wilder Wednesday” video on social media every Wednesday for nine years without missing one, and I’ve always believed that relationships matter more than transactions. Nearly all of my business comes through referrals, and that’s built on trust earned one genuine interaction at a time. Southern But Savage will be released on September 15 and will be available through Amazon Books. To celebrate, Wilder will host a book launch party at Capitol at the Brentwood Country Mart on September 15 from 4 to 7 PM.
