I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers, and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize women-owned businesses in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to the women of Brentwood.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

With a contagious smile and a radiant personality, Cecily Bauchmann is aiding in making social media a happier and more vulnerable place – all by just showcasing her realistic daily routine.
If you have TikTok or Instagram, there’s a great chance you’ve come across Cecily’s content, which she’s been creating and sharing with the world since 2018.
Originally from San Diego, Bauchmann and her family of six packed up their lives and moved across the country to Franklin a year ago. Since then, she has quickly fallen in love with Tennessee.
“Oh my gosh, I love it all!” Bauchmann gushes. “I do miss parts of San Diego, but I feel like there's so much mystery and whimsy here in Middle Tennessee, it’s just so special everywhere you go.”
It was when she was still in San Diego that she first started to gain recognition
by showcasing her daily routine. Between being a mom of four, and her husband being a pastor, Cecily constantly would have a busy Sunday morning trying to get her family out of the house.
“I had always been asked the question ‘How do you get out of the house with all of the kids on a Sunday morning?’ and that always sat in the back of my head and I was like ‘I don’t know I just do it,” Cecily explains.
Soon enough, students involved with the youth ministry at her husband’s church encouraged her to download TikTok and share her daily routine.
“I was super curious about what TikTok was and at the time I was dealing with postpartum depression and anxiety,” Cecily says. “There were a few moms that popped up on my feed because of the algorithm and were just a breath of fresh air to me. I remember going to the app not to just scroll but to feel
a little bit more hope and to know I am not alone in my journey as a mom. I remember thinking to myself if I could ever come out of this (postpartum depression) I want to be able to help other women and other moms.”
She stayed true to her word and after gaining an audience, created a safe space on social media for other moms and women to be more vulnerable. Cecily currently has over 2.2 million followers on TikTok and 681k followers on Instagram, but this audience didn’t appear overnight.
“I was kinda all over the place, my videos didn't have a consistent rhythm or flow,” she explains. “In the mix of that I posted a nighttime routine, and I also shared how I get out the door with four kids on a Sunday morning so it was a whole ‘Sunday morning of a mom of four and a pastor’s wife’ and that video did really well and I remember thinking ‘I could do this every Sunday.”
“VULNERABILITY BRINGS HEALING TO OTHER PEOPLE,” SHE SAYS. “ANYTIME I’VE HEARD SOMEONE OPEN UP AND JUST SHARE SOMETHING THAT THEY’RE STRUGGLING WITH IT NEVER RETURNS VOID."
Soon enough, she went from not only sharing her Sunday morning routines, but her daily routine. The more she shared her authentic routine, the more people tuned in to watch.
“That’s when I realized after all of the trial and error of everything I was trying to do I realized what people wanted to see from me as a mom and it was this realistic, authentic this is my day-to-day life and I'm not trying to make things look perfect on the outside,” Bauchmann says.
“It was refreshing for them but they also loved to see a consistent rhythm of my routine which I always loved routine in general so I just kept posting those and I know the repetitiveness that grew to where I am now.”
She didn’t try to make her life look perfect, instead, she chose to show a realistic day-to-day life and how much she loves it. This drew many viewers in as they found her content relatable and appreciated her vulnerability in sharing her life online.
From grocery shopping to getting her family ready for trips, Cecily’s content has raw and realistic coverage of any type of day-to-day tasks. She doesn’t hide any imperfections in her life and goes about life with a refreshing appreciation for it.
“Vulnerability brings healing to other people,” she says. “Anytime I’ve heard someone open up and just share something that they’re struggling with it never returns void. Somebody else in the group, or across the table can relate and see something in them that they need to hear and
know that they’re not alone in it, so it never goes wasted, and the enemy wants us to stay isolated in that place but vulnerable can be so much healing and restoration.”
Cecily’s positive comment section is also a reflection of the safe space she has crafted for women on the internet.
“This is so cliche but there’s only one you,” Cecily says. “I think that women compare ourselves so much and if that’s something you struggle with there is only one unique you in this world and nobody else can take that light from you, or your sparkle, or your beauty. That is so unique to you and God only made one you and whatever that is let your unique self shine through because nobody can be you and you can't be anybody else so just being you and letting yourself shine.”
Currently, Cecily is working on a fun project with her sister-in-law Samantha that will come out towards the end of the year. She’s using her platform for good and we can’t wait to see where it takes her!
“I have ten-year goals but those are big dreams I have and I can’t really figure them out yet, but God will always lead me down where you are right now in life,” she says. “God is directing you to that bigger purpose and dream you hold within you and don't ever doubt the process or your journey because everything does unfold the way it should be.”

"If you haven’t already heard, Grace Bowers is a bona fide, certified guitar-shredding prodigy garnering national buzz."
The waifish teenager sitting balled up in the wicker chair doesn’t look much like a revolutionary. Wearing a cream-colored, short-sleeve sweater over a white camisole top, with loose-fitting, high-water pants and white platform sneakers, she appears pretty much like almost any 17-year-old girl, especially one who loves hitting vintage clothing stores for retro-cool threads.
But Grace Bowers is not an ordinary teen.
If you haven’t already heard, she’s a bona fide, certified guitar-shredding prodigy garnering national buzz, who was featured in a segment on "CBS This Morning," getting press in USA Today, Guitar World and Hollywood Life, playing major music festivals, sharing the stage with superstars, performing with her own band and making records.
At press time, her debut single, “Tell Me Why U Do That,” was set for release in April.
Grace finds herself on the vanguard of a musical movement, if not an outright revolution: young girls who rock, slowly but surely upending the instrument’s longstanding gender dominance by males, one guitar at a time. Following in the wake of such guitar-slinging trailblazers as Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Bonnie Raitt, a new, more recent wave of other rock-guitar females includes H.E.R. (on this year’s Superbowl halftime show with Usher), L.A.’s all-girl punk rock band The Linda Lindas, the all-girl beehive-hairdo band The Surfragettes, and Anne Erin Clark, who performs as St. Vincent and has been ranked by Guitar World magazine as one of the best guitarists of the 21st century.
And the way it’s looking, Grace Bowers might be next on that list. “She’s going to inspire the next generation,” says Alex Haddad, guitarist for the Nashvillebased band Them Vibes, which has welcomed Grace onstage to perform with them several times.
“I’ve never met anybody her age as mature and developed on guitar. She’s a first. I can’t wait to see what she does next. She’s got everything she needs, and she’s still developing. The sky’s the limit.”
Sky-high isn’t too bad for someone barely old enough to drive.
In March, Grace headed to Austin’s South by Southwest, one of the largest entertainment festivals in the world, to perform and rep for Gibson Guitars, with which she already has a sponsorship and equipment deal. In February, she played guitar for Dolly Parton’s "Pet Gala," a celebrity-spangled CBS television special.
“I’ve gotten a lot of really cool opportunities recently,” she says, noting that she played with Lainey Wilson on New Year’s Eve in downtown Nashville to a crowd of 215,000. She smiles. “That’s pretty big.”
Pretty big indeed, especially for someone who started so small, as a wee-lass preteen growing up on the West Coast, not knowing exactly what she wanted to do, or be. “We tried pretty much everything,” says her mom, Lisa. “Girl Scouts, soccer, softball, gymnastics, ballet, karate. A few of them, she got kicked out of.”
“A lot of them,” adds Grace with a mischievous grin.
But then, when she was nine, she stumbled across a music video of Slash, the hairy, top-hatted axe-slinger for the ‘90s metal band Guns ‘N’ Roses, cigarette dangling precipitously from his lips, dressed in black head to toe, and totally slaying on his guitar. And Grace instantly knew what she wanted to do. “I thought he looked so cool,” she says. “I’m like, ‘Mom, I gotta get a guitar.'”
Honing her skills with guitar teachers and YouTube tutorials, Grace says she was soon digging deep into the instrument’s deep roots in the blues, watching YouTube videos of yesteryear’s legends. “Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mississippi John Hurt,” she says, “Almost all music comes from the blues. Like, it’s the roots of everything.”
She absorbed the musical mojo of solo superstars and maestros, such as Chuck Berry and B.B. King, the guitar-dominated blues rock of the Allman Brothers Band and the dazzling purple wizardry of Prince.
After coming from California to visit friends three years ago, Grace and her family made the move to Music City, settling into a new home in the Oak Hill area. “We just knew she needed to be someplace with creative minds,” says Lisa, “where she could find her people.” And Grace did, indeed, find her people,
And Grace instantly knew what she wanted to do...
“I’m like, ‘Mom, I gotta get a guitar.'”
playing locally in clubs, sitting in with other artists and posting videos on her Instagram page, building a massive fan following and attracting the attention of more established acts.
Grace says she knew exactly what she wanted when she put together her band, Hodge Podge, modeling it on other groups where the lead guitarist isn’t the standout star but part of the greater, organic whole. “Like Sly and the Family Stone,” she says, noting the ‘70s band’s fluidly eclectic mix of styles, from R&B and blues to funk and rock. Her own music with Hodge Podge is “a lot of funk and soul, and we have others that are more on the psychedelic side.”
She’s ready to take her show on the road this summer for a string of festival dates, including Telluride,
the Bottlerock Festival in Napa Valley and Louisville’s Americana-centric Bourbon and Beyond. She’ll be on the bill with artists such as Lizzo, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Strings and Sheryl Crow.
That’s some pretty high-falootin’ company she’s keeping. But when she comes home, Grace says she comes down-to-earth fast with schoolwork (she’s a junior) and chores. “Set the table, clean the counters, normal stuff,” she says. “Feed the dogs.” She has two goldendoodles, George and Lenny.
She also has two younger brothers, 14 and 16, who aren’t particularly impressed with their big sister’s rising star. “They’re really into sports,” she says. “I know deep down they’re proud, but would they ever tell me that to my face?” She smiles. “No, no, no!”
Sometimes she even shuttles her brothers around since they’re too young to drive. “I’m always dropping them off at football games and plays and stuff,” she says.
On a recent sibling errand, she had one of those you-areso-Nashville moments, spotting a country star. “Chris Stapleton was at my little brother’s baseball game. I think his son’s on the same team.”
She’s making more Nashville connections all the time. In May of last year, she organized a benefit concert after the shooting at the Covenant School, the fateful event that took six lives; her brother Sam (uninjured) was a student at a nearby school.
She says she loves seeing the seasons change in Middle Tennessee, noshing at Creve Hall Bagel Company, combing through vinyl at Grimey’s and shopping with her mom for stage outfits at some of Nashville’s vintage clothing stores. “We can also do serious damage at Nordstrom’s,” Grace adds.
When her family first moved here, Grace went to Nashville Christian School, but now she’s learning online. “There’s a social aspect of [being in school] that I really miss,” she says. “But at the same time, I’m getting to do what I love every night instead of going to school. So, while I do miss it, I wouldn’t go back.”
She says she loves a lot about her new life in Nashville, where music is everywhere, places to play are plentiful, people are helpful and friendly, and the stars go ballgames, shop at Kroger, and sometimes invite you, and your guitar, to share their stage. But there’s one thing she misses about her old home state: “You don’t need a car to get around in California,” she says, noting Nashville’s infamous traffic snarls, the city’s lack of public transportation and shortage of bike lanes.
“Where I was from, I could get anywhere I wanted on a bike or on the BART [the San Francisco Bay area’s elevated high-speed rail transportation system]. Nashville needs something like that badly.”
And Grace needs just a bit more academics before she completes her senior year in 2025; she’s mulling college, if she wants to go and where. “If I do, I will probably want to go to Belmont and stay in Nashville. But I don’t know if I can handle another four years of school. So, we’ll see.”
Everyone else also will get to see where this gifted guitar girl goes on her musical journey, living a dream that began in California and ultimately brought her to Music City. Wherever the road (or the high-speed railway) takes her, one thing is sure: Grace knows what she wants.
“I just want to be happy,” she says, “and playing music.”

If you grew up in a family that owned Mercedes Benz you more than likely have fond childhood memories of a luxurious smooth and quiet ride, plush and springy backseats, and depending on which trim level your Mom had, maybe a hint of style. One impression you almost certainly don’t have is one of speed and performance.
The Mercedes of today is something entirely different.
Take the new 2024 AMG GLE53. It seats the same number of people as your childhood car, but that’s where the similarities end. The GLE53 has 3 forms of boost producing 429HP - to put that into perspective the 1985 Mercedes 300d made 123HP.
Rotate the steering wheel mounted mode selector to sport+ and the GLE53 barks to life by opening the valves on the dynamic performance exhaust. It snarls and growls its way through all nine gears. For something of its size and weight, the GLE53 drives like a dream. It’s fast and aggressive when you want it to be and with the turn of a dial, it's calm, silky smooth, and luxurious. Truly two cars in one.
As good as the performance is, where the GLE53 really shines is the interior. The fit and finish are the industry standard at this price point. The Burmester stereo my photo car was optioned with is about as good as a car sound system can get. Everything your hands interact with is pleasing to the touch, easy to use, and intuitive. That last point- intuitive is important, I drive and photograph a lot of cars and you’d be surprised how many highend brands completely overlook the importance of intuitive controls and functions.
My biggest takeaway from spending time with the GLE53 was the fun factor. It's a fun and happy car that wants to be driven enthusiastically. The excellent suspension hides the car's overall mass making it feel like a much smaller, nimbler car and the abundant power makes you feel like you could give Lewis Hamilton a run for his money if he pulled up next to you at a light.
The amazing thing about the current Mercedes inventory is that an entry-level model will feel distinctly similar to the GLE53 I drove, the Mercedes DNA and design language are present throughout the entire line-up. If you’re interested in looking at the modern Mercedes lineup be sure to visit Mercedes Benz of Nashville located at 630 Bakers Bridge Ave in Franklin.

Briley King is the daughter of a long-haul trucker, the wife to a touring musician, and the heart behind Little Bird Trucking. Born and raised in North Carolina, Briley was taught the importance of drive and dedication at a very young age. At seven years old, her parents told her if she wanted to take singing lessons, she would have to fund the money herself. That day, she cut the top off a milk jug and sang on the street until she raised enough money to do so. Her work ethic later earned her a degree in Communications from East Carolina University, where she began working in Corporate Litigation before moving into finance.
A true daddy’s girl, Briley recalls the awe she felt when her dad would come home after long days on the road as a truck driver. “He came in like a superhero… I danced, sang, did gymnastics, theater, basketball, softball - anything I could get involved in growing up - and my dad was always my biggest fan.” This year, her dad will be hitting four million miles out on the road.
For her thirtieth birthday, Briley planned an evening out with friends to go to a Marcus King concert. She only knew a few songs – one, specifically, that she noted helped get her through a hard breakup. After the show, Marcus found a post she made on Instagram and immediately messaged her, inviting her to another one of his concerts. “I walked on his tour bus wearing a big, huge caftan and Mignonne Gavigan bird earrings,” she shares. “I said, ‘What’s up, y’all, I look like Big Bird,’ and Marcus looked at me and said, ‘No, you’re a little bird.’”
After a night of singing and dancing, Marcus told Briley to quit her job and marry him, but it had always been instilled in her to have her own thing going - her own identity – even when she was to get married. Seven months later, the lovebirds were engaged and living in Nashville. While in a bliss - between life on the road, planning the wedding, and getting to watch her fiancé pursue his dream - Briley was up at all hours, taking phone calls in different time zones, sending emails, and beginning to brainstorm a career that allowed her to be creative and align with life on the road.
While living on the tour bus, and unsure of when she would be able to wash and style her hair next, trucker hats became a wardrobe staple for her. She started collecting them through eBay, vintage stores, gas stations, merch stands, friends, and beyond. One night, while Marcus was on stage in his signature feather cowboy hat, Briley had the idea to make her own trucker hats detailed with a feather. When it comes to the design and style, Briley shares, “I love color! [I enjoy] putting neutral-colored feathers on to lilac, pink, red, and blue hats to encourage the wear of more color... keeping it preppy, girly, and fun has always been a priority for me.”
After the pair wed in February of 2023, Briley began pouring her heart into making these hats for herself, her family, and her friends. Once she posted videos to social media wearing dresses, heels, and her new trucker hat – styled in what she refers to as “things that don’t look like they should go together” – people began taking note of her signature look and asking how they could get a hat of their own, giving Briley the motivation to share Little Bird Trucking with the world.
CONTINUED >
“I SAID, ‘WHAT’S UP, Y’ALL, I LOOK LIKE BIG BIRD,’ AND MARCUS LOOKED AT ME AND SAID, ‘NO, YOU’RE A LITTLE BIRD.’”
Briley hand-makes every hat, usually around two hundred per day, in addition to boxing up packages, shipping each order, handling all customer inquiries, and running the social media account. She has gotten to collaborate with the iconic Houston Rodeo, celebrities, and - to make it all full circle - Mignonne Gavigan, the designer of the earrings she wore the night she met Marcus. With many accomplishments and orders to all fifty states, her absolute favorite part is watching others rock their Little Bird Trucking gear. She also acknowledges she couldn’t do it without her incredible USPS mail carrier, Samantha Knox, who has gone above and beyond to help her with each order.
While the idea behind starting a trucker hat company began as an ode to her dad, it has since flourished into reflecting many aspects of her own life. Birds have always signified a lot to Briley; in addition to always having a fascination for Cardinals, her grandfather loved birds. She shares, “he had a chair by the window and a bird I.D. book… all day, he would sit on his porch and identify the birds that would come to the bird feeder.” Ten days after Briley and Marcus met, her grandfather passed away. She adds that Marcus and her grandmother have an incredible relationship, and that she truly believes her grandfather sent Marcus to not only her, but her whole family.
From the feather design to the name of each product - which are inspired by the titles of Marcus’ songs – the thought and love that goes into each item does not go unnoticed.

Navigating the world of finance and money management can seem like a daunting task. Whether it be opening a savings account or starting a business, there’s a group of knowledgeable and passionate women standing by ready to offer other women their guidance.
The group of dedicated and experienced bankers is known as Her Bank and operates as a division of Legends Bank. Britney Campbell, Her Bank’s founder and senior vice president of marketing and public relations, says Her Bank is a brand inspired by women for women. It falls right in line with her passion for advocating for women personally and professionally.
“Women are in a unique position right now to level up financially in a big way. We’re an economic force, and the wealth transfer coming from the baby boomer generation within the next decade is going to be a game-changer for women who will possess more money than ever before. That’s huge and presents incredible opportunities, especially being in the space of advocating for women to be more money-conscious and confident,” Britney says.
She and the other women with Her Bank launched the brand in May 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic left many women needing banking and business support. “Customers were leaning on their bankers during a very uncertain time.
“I’m incredibly blessed to have been raised and loved by strong women. They have been such a powerful force to help me grow and provided the foundation that has fueled my passion to pay it forward to other women,” Britney says.
Women lost their jobs; and those who had established businesses or just took the leap into entrepreneurship were faced with tough decisions, needed financial assistance and support in a way that hadn’t been seen in our lifetime, “Britney says. “It was humbling to witness as a banker and walking lockstep with our customers through this experience, human-to-human, inspired me to figure out how to do more of ‘that’, but for women.”
Her Bank offers all the standard banking services, such as checking, savings, lending, mortgage, and business solutions. Britney says Her Bank’s love language is working with women, especially women who own businesses. “We love to meet women where they’re at and get to know them on a deeper level,” Britney says. “We take a holistic approach to make sure we’re also providing other resources beyond banking services to help support their business.”
Outside of work, Britney says she enjoys how integrated her personal relationships are with her professional life. In her downtime, she enjoys snuggles with her French Bulldog, Gertie; fun outings with her boyfriend, Steve, and spending quality time with her girlfriends in the Nashville/Franklin area. She’s active in multiple organizations, such as Heels and Handshakes, Tennessee Women Connect, and a couple of women’s co-working spaces in Franklin and Nashville. “I love being able to find spaces that bring other women together to have conversations that enrich and help each other grow,” Britney says.
“We love to meet women where they’re at and get to know them on a deeper level,” Britney says. “We take a holistic approach to make sure we’re also providing other resources beyond banking services to help support their business.”
Raised by a single mother with strong matriarchs in her family, she says the women in her life have inspired and encouraged her to be the woman she is today.
“I’m incredibly blessed to have been raised and loved by strong women. They have been such a powerful force to help me grow and provided the foundation that has fueled my passion to pay it forward to other women,” Britney says.
When talking about Her Bank, Britney says she wants to see women winning in the game of money and financial success. “I’m no stranger to overcoming hurdles and life circumstances that created both financial challenges as well as opportunities. My story is not unique, but my financial journey and goals are, which is why we want women to know whatever financial dreams they have, we want to make them come true at Her Bank.”

This Mother’s Day is the perfect chance to celebrate your loved one with a new kitchen or spa-styled bath.
DesignCraft Kitchen and Bath Co. has a team of skilled professionals with 70-plus years of combined experience. Imagine the magic of a new space designed exclusively with your style and needs in mind. Instead of sending your loved one to a spa for Mother’s Day create their own oasis of peace at home with a new bath reno or the gourmet kitchen of her dreams.
DesignCraft Kitchen and Bath Co. began their business in Tampa in 2018 and quickly grew to include an office in Brentwood by 2022. This company updates kitchens and baths as well as mudrooms and laundry rooms or whatever space needs their magic. They have a team of interior designers, design consultants, project managers, and showroom assistants. Also part of the team is their general laborers like painters, tilers, cabinet installers, and carpenters.
From start to finish, first, you will receive a free in-home consultation with one of their design consultants where they will gather measurements and ideas to personalize your new space. After the initial home consultation, clients will be welcomed into the design center, “…to review the design and make changes/adjustments until both designer and client are happy,” says Tracy Urso CFO of the company. When the design is finalized, materials are ordered and construction begins. A typical kitchen remodel will take approximately 6 to 8 weeks to complete.
This company has been a part of home design expos in both Florida and Tennessee. DesignCraft Kitchen and Bath Co. will be showcased in many events this year. They will be attending the Murfreesboro Home
“I love watching the pieces come together, planning, organizing, and make[ing] schedules align. And of course, seeing the transformation,” states Urso.
Show in Murfreesboro from May 17-19. Potential clients can speak with design consultants and learn more about the company. Product sample displays and before/after photos will showcase their materials and craftsmanship to help you visualize how they can transform your home. From August 17-18, they will be present at the Nashville Home Expo at The Fairgrounds in Nashville. Lastly, this blooming business will be part of the Southern Nashville Home Show October 11-13 at the Ag Expo Park in Franklin. Stop by, meet with the team, and learn how you can use their crafty expertise to transform your home with a magical makeover.
What’s magical about the interior design and home renovation business?
“I love watching the pieces come together, planning, organizing, and make[ing] schedules align. And of course, seeing the transformation,” states Urso.
The kitchen remodeled and featured in our photos is a beautiful example of the quality of work these craftsmen can accomplish. This specific kitchen remodel consisted of closing one entrance to the kitchen and adding lots of accessories and storage space.
DesignCraft installed toe kick drawers with touch latch technology, 3” pull-out fillers with built-in step stools, pot fillers, and lots of drawer accessories.
“It was a great project to work on and a great client,” says the DesignCraft team.
The trends this spring in home design are the use of bold colors like dark blues and greens highlighted with light wood tones to contrast these deep hues. Warm colors are also coming back into style. These posh colors are paired with popular matte black or brushed gold finishes to create a striking effect. The style for bath renovations seems to see a trend in large walk-in showers, floating shelves, and free-standing tubs to create a serene and relaxing environment for the homeowner. Whatever trends or styles you prefer, DesignCraft Kitchen and Bath Co. will take great care of you. DesignCraft also boasts a spell of 5-star ratings online. Check out this budding business and let them create magic in your home!

CL: CITY LIFESTYLE WELCOMES
VANESSA HELBIG JOHNSON, THE SENIOR DIRECTOR OF YOUTH SERVICES AND THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GIRLS, INC., NASHVILLE, TO TELL US ABOUT GIRLS. INC. AND ITS VERY SPECIAL MISSION.
VHJ: Girls are constantly receiving messages from the world, sometimes through social media, regular media, or community members, and a lot of times they can put our girls in this little box. It tells girls what they need to be and “should” be, how to look, how to act, what to like, and what skills to have. We want to help our girls receive messages that compensate for what’s missing. We like to educate them about careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), and let them know they can be
GIRLS INC. INSPIRES
ALL GIRLS TO BE STRONG, SMART, AND BOLD
"WE
good at engineering and science and all of those areas, as well. So we give them experiences, let them explore new things, and give them a chance to decide who they want to be for themselves. We try to make sure they get well-rounded messages that then allow each of them to thrive in their individuality, help them be leaders, and have a successful future.
We also try to build up protective factors. Girls, Inc. is within the YWCA organization, and our mission is to eliminate racism and empower women. Our girls’ programming is under that mission as well, and we are the largest domestic violence shelter in Tennessee. We want to be a part of the solution when it comes to domestic violence so we work to build up skills that could help protect our girls and give them things to look out for. We know that a victim is not to blame, but hopefully, we can build up skills, safety plans, and red flag awareness to help reach positive outcomes. Financial literacy is a big piece of what we do. We've noticed when looking at domestic violence that a lot of times when one doesn’t have independent financial funds, or those funds are controlled in the relationship, that’s a factor for domestic violence. We help our girls think through financial literacy, see what it means to have a budget, what it takes to live, and pay rent. We assist them in thinking through school and what degrees they are interested in as well as what might reward them as far as their income.
VHJ: All of our programming is for ages 7 to 18, for elementary, middle, and high school students. We cater all of it to the different age groups. For elementary school students, we talk about the difference between financial needs and wants, and we help middle school girls create a budget. Our high school girls talk about scams, building credit, and loans. We want to make sure they have tools that can help them be successful. We also look at healthy and unhealthy relationships, communication skills, media literacy, and self-esteem, as well as living a healthy life, critical thinking, emotional regulation, and so much more!
“Girls, Inc. is a national organization and we're the local affiliate here in Nashville under the YWCA. We've been here since 2008, and our mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. We have a vision of a future full of successful, independent women, and we believe all of our girls are already strong, smart, and bold. It is part of who they are, built into them, and we are just walking alongside them to help them grow and thrive. We believe in our girls!” - Vanessa Helbig Johnson, the Senior Director of Youth Services and the Executive Director of Girls, Inc., Nashville Vanessa Helbig Johnson has been with Girls Inc. at YWCA Nashville & Middle TN since 2015. She is passionate about advancing the rights and opportunities of youth and their families. She is impacting the lives of hundreds of girls in our community every day and was recently honored as the 2023 winner in the Community Service/Nonprofit Leader category at the Nashville Emerging Leader Award.
CL: WHO DOES GIRLS, INC. SERVE?
VHB: Our programming is provided in Metro Nashville Public Schools, as well as other community sites, to the same girls every week. We also provide free summer and spring break camps, as well as family engagement opportunities. We are grateful for the relationships we get to have with the girls as mentors through supporting relationships and recognize that we are one piece of the puzzle and their family is a huge piece. We can come alongside and support the family as well. We let our girls know that their voices matter and that they have the right to use them for the things that they are passionate about. We want to empower our girls to be civically engaged and become agents of change for an equitable world for women.
CL: HOW IS THE PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED?
VHJ: It's best for us to meet our kids where they are. We have after-school programming and centers, and school day programming, where we get to see our kids during lunch or clubs. We go with the same group once a week for the whole school year and provide sustained exposure throughout the girls’ education. We might be at an elementary school and follow through to high school so we can be with them for as long as possible. Girls Inc. has the benefits of research-based and evidence-based curriculum programming we can implement.
CL: TELL US ABOUT THE CAMPS YOU OFFER.
VHJ: We host camps during spring break and summer and focus them on STEAM (science, tech, engineering, art, and math). We have different people who come in from different jobs and share about their career paths, how they got there, what their skills are, and how those skills work with their jobs. Last spring break camp we had 45 girls ages 7 to 13. The skills and knowledge students learn in Girls Inc. equip them to set goals, overcome obstacles, and improve academic performance. We couldn’t provide these amazing experiences without our fabulous community partners and donors like Cummins, Enterprise, and Asurion!
“WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE TOOLS THAT CAN HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL.”
CL: CAN READERS VOLUNTEER?
VHJ: We've been lucky to employ a great staff of three fulltime workers and one part-time worker, so we love volunteers, especially for camps! For summer camp we serve about 80 girls, and they come to us with a variety of personalities. One of the special pieces about having volunteers is that there are going to be those girls who connect to volunteers in a different way than they do to our staff. It is a great opportunity for our girls to increase positive connections with trusted adults.
CL: HOW ELSE CAN READERS GET INVOLVED?
VHJ: As for anyone who wants to get involved and volunteer, we're currently preparing for graduation for our seniors. We typically try to give our kids little special things that they may not get elsewhere, gifts to help prepare them for their future. Also, menstrual equity is important, and we try to make sure the girls have resources for those products. Donations of hygiene products such as deodorant or toothpaste – anything like that.
We serve as a one-stop destination for our young girls, a place they turn to in times of need. For those who share our passion for children and resonate with our mission, any contribution they can offer is invaluable to us. We welcome and make room for any support they wish to extend to our girls and their families!

“Up until a few years ago, outdoor entertaining areas were a ‘nice to have’ amenity, but today they are absolute ‘must haves’ on my clients’ wish lists.”
“I love showing off our amazing city to first-time visitors,” says Realtor® Paula Hinegardner of The Paula Hinegardner Group of Keller Williams in Franklin. “But, I definitely have clients who experience an initial disappointment when they learn that our communities don’t offer many options for neighborhoods with large parcels of land or mini farms. Truth be told, there are actually only a few neighborhoods in the area that even allow horses on the property.”
One of these neighborhoods is Black Hawk, a small, close-knit community in the quaint town of Arrington, located about 20 minutes from Brentwood and 30
minutes from Downtown Nashville. Paula is representing a home in Black Hawk that does fit the idyll of country living, with over 5,200 square feet, four bedrooms, five and one-half baths, and situated on three-plus privately gated acres just perfect for horses!
Located at 6605 Goshawk Court, it’s casually elegant with both an open floor plan and well-defined spaces that make it a very livable home. Featuring a gracious twostory dining room, a charming brick kitchen fireplace, and a primary wing with a private office, it’s quite unique. The finished basement with beamed ceilings and a custom-built bar is perfect for indoor entertaining.

Perfectly fitting the bill, this home has expansive patios, a pool, a hot tub, and a covered pavilion with a full kitchen - it’s the perfect Southern outdoor living space.
The Paula Hinegardner Group of Keller Williams offers unique concierge services that can help provide for any of your real estate needs. Paula has won numerous awards including #1 Keller Williams Agent in the Southeast and is one of Nashville’s top agents.
Before becoming a Realtor, Paula had a 20-year corporate career. When she tried to retire, she found she missed the hustle and bustle and turned her sights to real estate.
“My mom was a broker, so I grew up around the business,” she says. “Plus, my husband Steve and I were corporately relocated more than 18 times throughout our careers. I saw firsthand what a difference a great Realtor could make in determining the success of a move and that ideal has modeled my business ever since. She and Steve have lived in Franklin for 15 years, so she is very familiar with the area. Paula also understands the luxury market and how to attain and enjoy everything that Tennessee has to offer. Whether buying or selling, let Paula and her team make your real estate dreams a reality.

I grew up in Florida and will admit I’m a total Disney nerd. And a Star Wars nerd. Ok, maybe just a nerd. When Disney Cruise Lines announced a Star Warsthemed sailing, I knew that I had to go. So, magically, I convinced my family to pack our bags, put on our mouse ears, and head to Port Canaveral.
As we checked in and boarded the ship through the giant mouse ears, it was easy to let reality slip away and all become kids again. My cousin’s favorite thing was the water park complete with a giant tube slide that circled the ship high above the seas; my dad’s favorite was the authentic Irish Pub with trivia and drinks every night; and my favorite was the Ice Cream Parlor and candy shop. Yes, I had mint chocolate chip ice cream every day- with gummy bears. My mother’s favorite was the spa, complete with a juice bar, heated lounge chairs, and ocean-view hot tubs.
Our cruise sailed the Caribbean and made stops in Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Mexico, and Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay. There was something for everyone. Tequila shots in Mexico? Check.
Swimming with dolphins in Jamaica? Absolutely! Jet-ski tour of clear Bahamian water? Sign us up.
Disney characters all roam the ship constantly. Every day has a different theme, and the characters have costumes to match. On formal night, Donald and Daisy were in their finest attire. On Pirate night, Captain Hook and Jack Sparrow were on deck and Mickey is in buccaneer regalia. On Star Wars Day, the First Order takes over the ship and stormtroopers go on pool patrol. Everyone on the ship is dressed in costume, young to old, even menus are themed. These were honestly my favorite pictures we took, not because we all had ridiculous costumes (which we did) but because we all were so happy and laughing together.
On port adventure days, we would get up and have a ridiculously large breakfast (we’re on vacation, ok?) and set out to explore. We could head to the beach, we could swim with dolphins or rays, walk around town, or go on various tours. It was usually a combination, we could climb the waterfalls in Jamaica, then head back to catch the latest Disney movie release in their full-size theater complete with popcorn, sodas, and candy. We could drink all morning at Señor Frogs in Mexico, then hit the spa on the ship. At night we all reconvened to eat dinner and talk about our respective days.
Occasionally, however, we needed a break from the kiddos and several adult beverages. The adults would convene at the Serenity Deck or at one of a dozen or so bars for a frozen concoction that helped us hang on. Every night the adults played trivia before dinner, usually in our costumes. If you’ve never seen a large group of adults dressed like pirates arguing over '80s trivia, then you’re just letting the best in life pass you by. Disclaimer: there is no casino on board. This wasn’t important to me but was of great disappointment to my father.
It was easy to find something for everyone, but I also can’t remember the last time I had so much fun just hanging out with the family. No one was on their phones (unless it was for a photo), no one was running late for work, and no one complained about homework. Everyone was relaxed and having a great time. If Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia can have a magical family trip, then there’s hope for everyone….
